He woke up to the gloomy morning with a sore throat. If this continued, he’d get ill. ((He’d get ill he continued sleeping at 5am like this, exhausting himself till he fell into slumber, getting only four hours of death-like oblivion before waking to life again.)) Then he looked at his phone.
It was his birthday.
He wanted to laugh.
What absurdity. ((His birthday.)) To be woken to another grey, lifeless day of living. All he could think of now was how he wanted to die. Unconsciously, while he was still laying with his head on the pillow, silent tears slid down his cheek. The//His pillow was stained with a white patch before he registered the action, and when he did – he decidedly took no notice of it.
He lay there like that, thoughts drifting into an inexplainable gloom before he sat up and wiped his eyes dry.
How old was he anyways? 23? Was that last year? 24 then? He did not know and truly did not care. Why would he want to celebrate that he’d survived another hopeless year?
***
"It is clear that you need me," he began, so certain of his words. He had all the reasons to be, both of them knew that he spoke the truth. "But I have no reason to stay. Why should I?" He had raised his eyes to look at L, a direct challeng to L's pride.
He could lose Light now, he had invested too much time, too much effort, too much... L did not fail, and he always got what he wanted. He would not let Light go.
But Light was right. L had nothing to shackle Light down with, and in his ... years this was the only way he knew - to have the overhand, to have more knowledge, to have something that kept people close befcause they wanted to aquire it. Now he was hopeless, because he had nothing Light could possibly want from him. Now that L had taught Light everything and Light had learnt everything because he was the genius L had believed he was, now that Light could see right through L just as he had seen through Light when they met on the night of his graduation.
His mind was driving on full speed, finding something, anything, to respond Light with.
The brown-haired was leaning against the doorframe with his arms crossed, and his smile twisted into a small, mocking smirk - knowing that he had won.
Then a strange, illogical and absolutely foolish idea crossed L's mind, and he exercuted it before thinking through the idea - because if he did, he'd certainly not have done it. In the moment of bracery and under immense urge to prove himself, that he still had something that Light have not obtained, he looked at the dark, mocking* eyes.
"..."
L shuffled towards Light through the heavy silence and the expectant look in Light’s eyes // the challenge // ‘Surprise me’. ((And the coldness that told him that Light will turn on his heels and leave without ever loNoking back, with no regrets.)) L has this one chance and he refused to fail.
When he came close enough, their faces to mere inches away, close enough to see the slight amusement in the other’s eyes, like he wanted to see how far L would go and almost expected what was to come. Then L brought their lips together, and his world came crashing down on him.
The world’s greatest detective, kissing a suicidal ***. The world’s top three detectives, pursuading a *** to stay. What was he doing?
When he pulled away, ((his breathing laboured and uneven)), Light was looking at him with//and his lips formed an ugly smile.
“Nice try.”
Then he turned to leave.
No.
L would not allow this.
Without thinking, he grabbed onto the other’s shirt. Light stopped, but did not turn to face L.
“Anything you want to tell me, L?” The use of his name was stressed, Light knew who he was. What he was. L knew he had to spit it out, even if the words choked him, or he’d lose Light. He couldn’t afford to lose Light.
He swallowed audibly, and opened his mouth. The words stuck in his throat like glue.
“I-… I need you, Yagami-kun.” He swallowed thickly, then added in a barely audible whisper. “Please don’t go.”
L never begged anybody. He was confident in himself and his abilities. But Light was prideful too, and he had the upperhand. If L wanted to keep the younger genius, he had to sacrifice his pride. For now.
