I often think about how Meiko perceieves the 'villains' in the story, especially with how a majority of them are presented as (somewhat) sympathetic beings. What does it take to make her sympathize with them? To 'forgive' them, if at all?

Her thoughts on the matter follow a generally consistent code.

Meiko can empathize with an antagonist's personal history. Her hometown is made up of folks who break multiple laws, her parents were pirates, etc. She and A'kihiko understand that people will sometimes do terrible things to survive.

This is especially strong in the cases of Yotsuyu and Fordola. Meiko can feel genuine sympathy for both women upon learning their history. She recognizes that Fordola wants to make amends and agrees with Lyse that her crimes against Ala Mihgo should be paid in service to the country, not a death sentence.

In most cases, Meiko only believes that the 'death penalty' should only be carried out if the villain is out of control. That is, they do not show regret nor are interested in reform. When the world around them is safer only if they are dead, then she'll be the first to offer up to execute someone.

This is the case with both Yotsuyu and with Zenos. Yotsuyu is actually a more sensitive case than Meiko would ever let anyone know because of how the woman was sold into a brothel. Meiko knows that is exactly where she would have ended up if her father's crew hadn't intercepted the ship. Thus, she empathizes with Yotsuyu a lot. Would she have done the same? Could have turned out similar?

Despite this, and perhaps out of a distant respect for her, Meiko would have (if it were her place; she knows it is not) put Yotsuyu to death. She recognizes Yotsuyu's hatred is all that she is. That is more than evident when her amnesia leaves her in a childlike state. Meiko was deeply disturbed by 'Tsuyu' and her mannerisms. It felt, again, like some form of human trafficking to keep her that way. She was relieved at the outcome, although she pitied Yotsuyu and her miserable existence.

When it comes to Zenos, Meiko would also be unable to vote for anything but his execution. The events in canon do not leave any room for Zenos and the WoL to talk. Every time he appears, it is to threaten or murder innocent people in order to get a rise out of them. He does not see an issue with this. He does not show remorse for anyone but himself and his boredom, his loneliness, etc.

Although Meiko can admit that his presence against the Endsinger was helpful, she did not give him acceptance (A'kihiko did) and could only ever treat him as an annoyance. A dangerous annoyance.

If Meiko ever had a chance to simply hear Zenos out, if she could hear him explain why he functions the way that he does... at best, she would want to shake him violently. She would only grow frustrated trying to get him to understand why what he does is wrong. If he agreed to 'repent' for his ill-doings, it would only be for selfish motivations (to fight the Mochikokos again) and not for genuine change. No matter why or how Zenos ended up the way he did, Meiko can only see the world as safer without him.

Skipping back in the timeline again --

Ysayle. Lady Iceheart. Meiko rarely forgives anyone who has threatened her brother so directly, but Ysayle showed genuine regret for her actions from the get-go (in HW). If Ysayle had survived, Meiko would recommend she not return to Ishgard again if she can help it...but to join the Scions as her 'penance' instead. Meiko is also confident that Ysayle would dedicate the rest of her life to doing good deeds to make up for her poor ones.

Gaius! When he was simply the Black Wolf who threatened Eorzea, revived Ultima, and had a weird gaggle of devotees, Meiko had no reason to sympathize with him. He came from Garlemald who thought they knew better than Eorzeans and decided they wanted to conquer them (as far as she knew), so she was all for killing the bastard.

When he returns in Stormblood, circumstances have changed. Like Ysayle, he seeks to undo some of the harm he did. He also does himself a favor by not returning to Garlemald nor Eorzea, instead sticking to Werlyt and trying to heal. Meiko believes he does not intend to return to any wicked conquering, so he can go back to raising his lizard daughter.

Ascians. Oh, you rambly, tragic cloaked little bastards. As the truth around the Ancients comes to light and motivations are revealed, Meiko once again finds herself in the 'I pity you but you need to be stopped' category with Emet-Selch and Elidibus. Even Hermes gets some post-humous empathy! But again: they are threatening her loved ones, so they need to be killed.

This brings up another very good point with Meiko's perspective of villains: She's self-centered and isn't afraid to acknowledge it. She feels for Emet-Selch. She knows that if she were in his shoes (like with Yotsuyu) she would likely do the same. She recognizes he sees himself as the Hero.

But he is threatening a world in which people she loves exists. If it is purely a fight of my world versus yours (and it is), Meiko will be the first to choose her own. She can acknowledge the parallels but will not be guilted or shamed into allowing her loved ones to perish. She will choose people she cares for above all else, every time. Whether it's viewed as heroic or not.

As for Hermes, Meiko pities that man. She pities him for his sadness causing the end of the universe. It was purely an accident. His actions cannot be forgiven, but she knows he truly held no ill will at the start. The lad was just deeply depressed in what was otherwise considered a utopia. It was rought.

Fandaniel, though? Amon? Meiko recognizes that those are elements of Hermes that have gone off the deep end. Like Yotsuyu and Zenos, he is a feral creature who is too single-minded to be reformed. Death was the only option. This is similar to how she views Nidhogg, too. Although she is glad he's gotten attached to Estinien and they seem to be...helping each other, or whatever. She doesn't ask too many questions there.

Meteion -- Meteion gets a pass. Even at her worst as the Endsinger, even after she unmade the Scions, Meiko acknowledges Meteion's unique situation. She is not a hateful creature. She was an innocent child that was corrupted by the darkness she was unknowingly exposed to. She holds no ill will for the entelechy. In fact, she hopes to see her again.

Bonus: Asahi and Athena! Both were simply evil. Meiko refuses to believe anything else. Sorry not sorry, slit their throats and move on. Sometimes you just have some bad eggs. Best to send them back to the aetherial sea and hope they're better in their next lives.

Thinking abt the fantasy au again

I’m moving emu attempting to leave the group to some point after the part where I’m borrowing from wonder halloween but it’s very entertaining to play w how a more emotionally competent (barely) rui would go about being like “I should leave for the safety of the group.” Something something he’s like well if nene joins you have a magic user you don’t need me anymore (tsukasa pressing the incorrect buzzer)

Emu leaving needs to be more of a “this is My Responsibility and this is dangerous” which is absolutely impacted by tsukasa being injured in the beginning but I think it works better if I move it to be in line w her confrontation with meiko. Because she needs to confront meiko on her own au meiko would not accept the outstretched hand from emu unless it was without an audience. Emu going I’m able to move on from my grandpa’s death because of my support system & you can do the same thing after the death of Luka (because miku/kagamines/kaito are all still here and still love you) ouuggh… (meiko voice) I hate all humans especially the otori royal line (picture of emu is sent) I will make an exception because she looks very polite.

Also allows for more emunene relationship development beforehand bc nene would not be confident enough to confront emu on her dumbass choices without an established rapport. Nene finding out emu went to confront the embodiment of death and endings on her own out of a misplaced belief she needs to do things on her own: I’m going to kill everybody in this room and then myself.

+ honestly though v tempted to make like. The confrontation have all of wxs. At least for part of it. Because they’re all so important to each other and love each other so much. Idk… initial confrontation w emu and meiko and then kaito brings wxs into the fray?

+ world building in that the magic nene uses (drawing from the natural world) is more normalized/easier and more controlled as opposed to whatever rui uses (using his own energy and putting it into things he creates, or using his own energy offensively).

- I think if I go the prophecy route (doubtful) the prophecy will be a lie bc I do not vibe with “fate is set in stone” I think the crucial thing needs to be emu having An Idea which is why she runs away and Tsukasa follows her based off of that idea. & then rui and nene join for the same reason. Canonisms.

- rui & tsukasa sparring to improve their skill sets against the other’s arsenal. They need to be insane w each other in every universe. Also worked in both of them getting arrested because it’s really fucking funny. Tsukasa banging his head on the cell wall dramatically like ouughh how could this happen I just wanted to be a knight & rui’s like “well it could be worse” & tsukasa’s like “WTF DO U MEAN IT COULD BE WORSE”…

- saki restraining herself from hitting tsukasa when he comes back from his big fun (lying) journey (deserved of her). & then saki leaves to travel with L/N and he’s A Fucking Mess. Before this Saki is like u mentioned rui a lot in ur letters… what’s up w that (eyes). + saki and nene interactions with nene developing a treatment plan for the corruption borne chronic illness

- nene voice I’m so glad I can finally help someone w this illness Let me tell u embarrassing stories abt ur brother. Oh He didn’t tell you he got injured & I had to drag him back from deaths door. Um. (Saki is going to kill him)

- if any relationship happens in the main story it’ll have to be emunene (& even then it’s doubtful. ideally I’d write a focus for them abt it) ruikasa becomes a thing like a year+ after the main plot because they’re both genuinely incompetent

— idr if I mentioned it anywhere but I do have the heavy handed emu & rui meddling where rui books 1 room with double beds and 1 room with only one bed (meddling on behalf of nene) and he attempts to give emunene the room with one bed and then emu (meddling on behalf of tsukasa) is like ok so YOU’LL take the single bed room :) & then emu sleeps in the same bed as nene anyways.

—- whole au is nene being like ok well now I’m living life again. And if anything happens to emu I’ll kill everyone in this room and then myself.

- i think kaito should have a special relationship w tsukasa in that he communicates w tsukasa but in an incredibly unhelpful way & tsukasa wants to strangle him for this. Kaito gives unhelpful hints and Tsukasa is like what the fuck does that mean & kaitos like “you’ll figure it out :)” and Tsukasa is Seething.

- kagamines are more helpful. Len would probably interact mainly w rui & rin w nene. I don’t think rui and len get anything done though len just thinks rui is neat and rui is very happy to teach him things.

- miku is emu’s special little guide she shows up as a cat guiding her in the beginning and then fully reveals herself later. She’s not Super helpful but she does her best and also encourages emu to follow her heart. Which prologue tsukasa is suffering because of. (Tsukasa voice) where did the fucking princess go I’m in hell the king is gonna kill me (miku voice) hey emu come hide in this spot there’s free food.

This was a vague reference to Damwon’s championship skins where they had wanted to appear as gods coming down from the heavens, if I remember correctly.

chapter two: you and me (yuumi w) (get it? because meiko's skin is yuumi? i'm not funny ahahahah)

“Hmm,” Jiejie begins, his eyes wandering as he thinks. “I think Meiko would have wished for something to make him an even better support than he already is. Viper probably wished that he’d never miss a shot, and Flandre definitely wished for some magic that’s better than that smoke thing he does. That, or to be able to do this his entire life. Who knows?”

Two out of three isn't bad :)

I explained this in the end notes already, but Scout pronounces Jiejie’s name like 姐姐, which means older sister. Credit to my friend that only referred to Jiejie as “big sister” all throughout Worlds 2021. Bro is gonna fail Chinese III.

I’m pretty sure Scout is the only one to be referred to by his real name by his teammates, if you don’t count the introductions in the first EG fic. Generally, I try to avoid their real names, since it starts to feel a bit awkward once I’m writing about Ryu Minseok and not Keria or something. It’s too personal for me.

This was tested to make sure it was an accurate depiction. I got sleep paralysis once when my sister was audibly on a call in the room over. I tried to scream. Didn’t work. The sound I made was actually very embarrassing. (it is ok to laugh at me for my sleep paralysis experiences. they are funny in hindsight. for more tips on how to handle sleep paralysis just hmu)

chapter four: moonlight vigil (aphelios r)

“He’s not stupid—he knows what sleep deprivation does to people. (He’s read the Russian sleep experiment creepypasta, after all.)”

Somehow I doubt he would have been able to get his hands on that one, but whatever. Either way it’s kind of terrifying, and if it was true, this fic would go in a very different direction. Would not recommend it if you're scared easily or if you spend too much time thinking about everything that could go wrong.

In a different version, Scout absolutely snaps at Jiejie and then proceeds to verbally and emotionally obliterate him. I kind of wish I had been able to keep it in, since I thought it was kind of fun in a “haha angst goes brrr” kind of way, but it didn’t really fit in with the rest of the chapter.

Bokuto let out a yawn as he stretched. What time is it? He thought to himself as he grabbed his phone. 4:47 am. That day he had fallen asleep way earlier than usual, at about 6 pm. He was exhausted, the fact that he had not been eating probably adding to that exhaustion. His gaze went down from the time on his phone screen to see some notifications from the Hype(r) House group chat. After swiping a couple of times the group chat opened. He wishes it hadn’t. He wishes he didn’t see those messages at that time.

The messages were nothing out of the ordinary, yet for some reason, Meiko’s flirting with Hajime hit him harder that moment. Maybe it was the fact that he was exhausted and starving, maybe it was the fact that his heart still clenches when thinking of his ex-lover. The I love you’s, the pet names, the invitations for cuddling. His sleepy eyes widened, his chest felt heavy, he could’ve sworn he was getting stabbed right then and there. How could he have been so stupid? Why is he such an idiot? Why did he fall for her like that? He loved her so much. She was his everything.

“I loved her, I loved her...” he silently kept repeating to himself as tears started rolling down his face. His chest is getting heavier by the moment, his stomach feels sick. He can’t breathe. At that moment he opened another group chat, he wasn’t sure which one it was, but he managed to type two simple messages:

‘It hurts’

‘I can’t breathe’

You let out a sigh as you turned off your laptop. You had finally finished editing some features for your streams. You got up from your chair. Thankfully your work desk was quite close to your bed so you didn’t waste time before throwing your body on the bed. Before drifting to sleep you decided to check your phone to see how your recent tweets had done. You picked up the phone from the nightstand and saw some notifications from your group chat with the boys, you didn’t pick up what the notifications said at first. You swiped and opened the group chat. Your eyes widened at the texts, quickly typing ‘Bo what’s going on???’ And sending the text. Your brain finally picked up at what you were actually meant to be doing. You rush out of your room right into Bokuto’s room only to find him trembling on his bed. You quickly approach and hug him. He hugs you back tightly, letting out choked sobs.

“Bo? What’s going on?”

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry.” He manages to choke out.

“Koutarou, what happened? Talk to me, Kou.” You quickly say, trying to keep the concern from showing on your voice.

“I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to make you worried!” Guilt was choking him. First, he bullied you, now this? How horrible could he be?

“Koutarou. Talk to me. What happened?”

“How could I have been such an idiot, yn? Why am I so fucking dumb?” He sobbed between the words. “I... I loved her so much, she was my everything.”

“Bo.” You pulled away from the hug, looking at his eyes. “You are not an idiot, okay? She made you feel like this. This is how people like her work. It’s not your fault, okay? Okay?”

“If I was better, this wouldn’t have happened. If I was better she would’ve really loved me.” His tears and sobs weren’t getting any better. I’m making her feel even more guilty, I’m making her worried. Stop, stop, stop, stop. Fuck, fuck! He repeated to himself in his head.

“I...” he looked at your face, slightly calming down. “I don’t want this to go on any longer... I want these thoughts to stop, I want them to stop, yn!” He wiped his tears, which wasn’t doing much since more tears kept coming out.

“Koutarou!” You placed both your hands on his cheeks, making him look directly at you, “Listen to me, you will be fine. You are fine. It is not your fault. She did this to you. She did this to you.”

He froze for a moment, staring at your eyes. While doing so, he knew for a fact that you, yn, you were telling the truth. How could those eyes be lying?

He calmed down, tears stopping. All that was left now was his occasional sobs. You slowly put your hands down, making them hold his.

Kenma opened the door to find you two on the bed. He hadn’t slept that night either and had just finished a stream when he saw the messages on his phone and rushed to Bokuto’s room. He approached you two looked at Bokuto with concern. “Um, are you okay, dude?”

Bokuto manages to chuckle a little through the sobs. “Yeah, man... Thank you.”

“You should get some sleep, Bo.”

He stayed silent and nodded before laying down. You put a blanket over him, making a deal with yourself that you will not leave until you are sure he’s asleep and safe. He turned his back to you and Kenma, hoping that the feelings would go away from him as he drifted away but unfortunately they did not. The guilt and sadness stayed there, suffocating him. He closed his eyes and drifted off, hoping, praying, that he wouldn’t dream of the one who caused this in the first place.

"Panzermast" is a radio broadcast system used for disaster prevention that looks like megaphones on top of a pole.

The song is well-known since, in many places, (notably Kashiwa City, Chiba Prefecture; one video also shows it play in Akihabara) it is played over loudspeakers every day at sunset / 5 PM, as it’s also used to play a song called “Yuuyake, Koyake” as a signal for children (+students) to return home before it gets dark.

I already made a previous initial version here, (However, that one contains major implied spoilers for the Fic-verse ending!) This one specifically semi-parodies the opening scene of the series my overall fic-verse is parodying from; [Mekakucity @ctors] (However, again, it is NOT a direct 1:1 parody, Characters will not parody exact!)

ALSO, (Koushiro Voice) it is of my personal opinion that this fan-base should start paying more attention to not only the sceneries (including/especially Tri’s!) but also the wider series lore, specifically, also, at least partly pay attention to not only OG!Adventure + 02 lores but ALSO some of the T.C.G. lores...
