"Wasn't it something like Mackenzie--?", the question is asked with a deadpan tone and a slight quirk of his brow (there's no mistaking just who Masa is related to.) He knows it, of course, alongside the recoms' rank and some general information — let it be known his sister's lessons have not gone in vain — nonetheless, it's more fun to mess with him.
Frankly, Masa has thought Mays would be better at spotting such an obvious lie, the seasoned card-player he seems to be — half the skill is knowing how to lead people by their noses and being able to sniff out their bluff. Either he's not quite as good as his game (Masa may not know the rules, but he knows a player when he sees one) would suggest, or he simply can't imagine such a frail‐looking boy as a schemer; skin and bones and wheezing breaths, dark circles under dark eyes and webs of blue veins. Few can, always underestimating, overlooking, disregarding. Today, it suits him just fine, playing this role he's been born into, hunching his shoulders just so and leaning more against his crutches.
Or, perhaps, it's wishful thinking on the marine's part? He doesn't quite know what their relationship was like, all those years ago, but from what little his elder sister has disclosed, they clearly had something going on. Hope and love have always been mothers of fools, big and small. Masa can almost hear the cogs in Mays' brain turning, whirring a sweet delusion — "of all people, to be entrusted with her brother, must surely mean there's yet a chance for us".
Blegh. He doesn't want to think about that, for certain.
Or the recom could simply be scared of Mayu's wrath, the consequences of turning away her little brother. And understandably so; his Nee-san can be extremely frightening when angry. Almost enough to make Masa reconsider his plan.
Almost.
Whatever the case, he's got what he wanted. Line, hook and a sinker.
"Needing a mobility scooter in your 30s doesn't bode well for your career, gramps," despite the dry jab, the other marine is given a polite nod before the boy hobbles away, towards the door. Masa may be a shithead sometimes, yes, but he's not a mannerless shithead.
