By contrast, what would their haters dislike about your character? Is it a petty complaint? A mischaracterization of the character or their intentions? Are they just a woman in a largely male-centric series? (Ophelia)
META ASKS: If Your OC Was Canon
Where do we even begin? In all honesty, I think every reason someone would LOVE Ophelia would also be the same reasons someone would HATE Ophelia. She seems like the type of character that would leave very little room for anything in between.
The most basic is the fact she’s a powerful woman who has done wrong. We all know the trend that the same traits & actions done by a masculine orientated character will be far more appreciated off rip versus the same traits & actions being heavily critiqued when a feminine orientated character displays them.
That is the Law Of These Lands, no matter how much I disagree with it (I will say, I’ve been seeing less of that in current day which makes me happy :”) i love a fucked up woman—but this could also be due to the fact I heavily limit my online circle)
This is something ALL feminine-oriented characters go through though. They’re too weird, too boring, too kind, too bitchy, too weak, too strong— lets pin that to the side for now and get nittier and grittier w/ it.
I think people could get turned off due to her initial personality and her history. People could see her as just ‘whump’ material, and due to her playful nature she can be easily mischaracterized as just a manic pixie girlfriend <- hell *I* even make jokes about her being one!!!
Ophelia is a character that has a lot of walls built up around her, but those walls are cuddly & cutesy, much easier for her to be misconstrued ic and ooc (ic misconceptions are fun! ooc not so much). They’re still apart of her; her kindness isnt fake— but she does purposely repress and conceal her less savorable traits, so even in a streamlined story, those traits won’t pop up until further down the line outside of occasional hints.
The wonderful part about having her story be on a rp blog is that I feel like others will have to try very hard to not get the full picture behind Ophelia. Still, she excels as a slow burn type of character, with her history & intricacies slowly unveiling a little at a time.
