I saw the Mario movie yesterday and honestly it was really good! I give it like an 8/10.
Unfortunately I missed the first couple minutes or so of the movie because the theater was lined up with people, so it took a bit to actually get in haha. My friends and I all went dressed as Mario/Luigi too, which was awesome.
(spoilers under the cut)
tl;dr the Mario is very good and I want to see more
I was kind of expecting Chris Pratt's Mario to be not great, but surprisingly Fred Armisen's Cranky Kong was even worse. The only voice in the movie where I was like "wow this really doesn't fit." Now that I've seen the full movie rather than just the trailers I can tell that Chris Pratt at least tried. I still think that someone else probably would have fit better, but he wasn't horrible. Like even Charlie Day as Luigi and Seth Rogen as DK were pretty much just their regular voices, they still kinda fit somehow. Keagan-Michael Key's Toad and Kevin Michael Richardson's Kamek were spot on. Anya Taylor-Joy's Peach was serviceable—she sounds like a girl. And Jack Black's Bowser was freaking amazing. If I could tweak it a little bit to be pitched down slightly and maybe more growly then I think it would've been absolutely perfect, but as is I think he did a fantastic job. Charles Martinet as Giuseppe (basically Mario's design as Jump Man from the original Donkey Kong arcade game) was so great, and casting him as the Mario Bros' dad was a great choice.
The score was brilliantly done, the direction of having Koji Kondo as a composing consultant was an excellent choice, wouldn't have had it any other way. While I figured at least one pop song to show up, I think five has more than I was more than I was expecting. I'm not exactly bothered by it, but it was very noticeable haha. Also I wasn't expecting (yet not surprised) by the full on musical number that Bowser did performed by Jack Black. It was great lol, well done and got me to laugh. Also the DK rap was a welcome surprise, although Grant Kirkhope went uncredited which kinda sucks. Plus all the sound effects were great too.
The story wasn't intricate, and I keep hearing this as a complaint, but it's a Super Mario Bros. movie so idk what people were expecting on that front. It was a really fun ride from start to finish and I actually already want to watch it again. It's a great kid's movie and all the details, references, and easter eggs they put in for the fans of the series are greatly appreciated too. I wasn't expecting them to show so much of the Mario Bros' family or Peach's origins (which is to say not much, but I wasn't expecting any at all. And I also wasn't expecting them to show where the blue shells come from, so that's neat. I'm mildly disappointed at how large a chunk of the movie Luigi was captured. I understand they wanted someone to get captured because that's kind of Bowser's thing and they probably wanted Peach to shine on her own and do girl boss things, but I'm just disappointed that he was in a cage for like most of the movie.
The animation was also really well done if you were worried about that. I've seen some critics complain about that, but it almost feels like they watched a different movie as far as that point goes. The lighting was spectacular, the screen was almost always packed with detail, and the characters were expressive.
One last tiny gripe: Hearing the koopas being referred to as turtles more than once felt off to me. I know this complaint is such a nerdy one, but Nintendo has always gone out of their way to specifically call them koopas and not turtles. I usually only ever hear people call them turtles when it's someone who only vaguely knows about Mario. Having Mario call them turtles kinda makes sense since he's from Brooklyn transported to the Mushroom Kingdom, but Peach and even Bowser himself referred to them as turtles which was weird to me.

mario movie predictions
(for context I’m writing this before the trailer has been released)
this will not be a “good movie”
unfortunately, it also won’t be bad in interesting ways
you’ll definitely be able to tell that many people who worked on this care about the source material. background details will be filled with deep-cut references to things from across the whole franchise, including things nintendo hasn’t acknowledged in decades
those will be completely overshadowed by the lore references in the script, which are the most Dorkly-ass nostalgia bait “hey remember Mario?” type gags a committee of soulless writers could come up with
it’s (at least partially!) an origin story, obviously, but they’re not allowed to deviate from established “canon” enough to come up with anything interesting. the best they can do is reference relatively lesser-known games like Wrecking Crew. they won’t reference Mario Bros. (Game & Watch) because they’re cowards.
it’s a comedy, but they only have like five good jokes. all five of those jokes will be featured in the trailer, so a bunch of people who don’t know how trailers work will think it looks good
the majority of the gags are jokes you’ve heard a million times before. peach sure gets kidnapped a lot! did you know mushrooms are also drugs? if you’re the Mario Brothers does that mean your name is Mario Mario? hey what if “cake” is a euphemism for something!! mario eats mushrooms he’s on shrooms get it
chris pratt’s mario voice is okay. it sounds kinda like mario’s voice in hotel mario, but with less personality
charles martinet’s cameo is as mario. the first time mario says something, it’s in martinet’s voice, then he clears his throat and has a more boring voice for the rest of the movie
princess peach girlboss moments
there’s a “mario is a bad brother” subplot. mario mistreats luigi consistently, and it’s not resolved by mario growing as a person it’s resolved by luigi doing something cool and “earning” mario’s respect
coincidentally mario DOES grow as a person, when he eats the super mushroom : )
in accordance with the Post-Frozen Law of Animated Villains, there will be a surprise bad guy reveal. there are several ways this could go:
bowser as a villain is played straight for the first act, then mario rescues peach and that’s the end of the Origin Story portion. afterwords, the REAL villain comes in, and the gang has to team up with bowser to stop them! and that real villain, of course, is
Foreman Spike, from Wrecking Crew
Donkey Kong
Yoshi (revenge for being thrown into pits)
Wario (wahahahaha)
Luigi (mario is a bad brother subplot final form)
Waluigi (featuring meta jokes about how waluigi hasn’t been in enough games)
Peach (girlboss moments)
ALTERNATIVELY, one of the above is the villain at first, then there’s a third-act twist that. bowser is the villain.
there will be one shot, somewhere, where the super crown powerup appears in the background along with a bunch of other items, and people on twitter will freak out about how this is a canon reference to bowsette

In the nicest way possible: you can google an actor's name and add "IMDb" to the search for a full list of any actor's credits. If you ring Berry up on IMDb it is very easy to see that he has a lot of "proper VA" credits to his name, going all the way back to a minor role in Aqua Teen Hunger Force in 2006. He currently does voices in several ongoing Netflix shows like twelve forever and disenchantment, has 46 episodes credited to him of the most recent moomin show and has voiced various characters in a couple of Spongebob movies over the years.
There is a very big difference between hiring a big name silver screen actor to voice a character over an accredited voice actor--at this point in time, hiring crisp rat for literally any voice acting role is a decision based on the value of his name being attached to the project and the money that will bring in rather than his voice being in any way, shape or form suitable to play any specific character.
If these were roles that didn't exist before Chris Pratt or were made with Chris Pratt in mind, like Emett from The Lego Movie, I don't think people would mind overly much. It's a real problem, however, when celebs are tapped for big screen adaptations of characters like Mario and Garfield who have current voice actors who are alive, generally seen as The Voice for any specific character and are instead delegated to background cameos in movies starring whoever the current big name actor that resonates with young people front and center, voicing the characters they helped build up.
Charles Martinet, the gentleman who has voiced Mario, Luigi and Wario for years has a small cameo role in the upcoming Mario movie, which seems like kind of an insult considering the kind of money Pratt rakes in on any given role.
For what it's worth, I actually don't think Matt Berry should voice Garfield. He's got a great voice, but Garfield has always had a very specific type of voice, which is why, while I generally think replacing small screen voice actors with big screen ones for films is a shitty thing to do, I can't really be mad that Bill Murray has done Garfield's voice in movies past, because Bill Murray's normal speaking voice sounds like, well, Garfield of voice actors past, many of whom are extremely dead and won't really be missing out on work if Murray voices him.
If Murray isn't interested in voicing Garfield anymore, they'll need to replace him, but there are apparently 46 different versions of Garfield on the Behind The Voice Actors page for the character, and it looks like a couple of the more recent ones are still alive and kicking and could probably use even a quarter of the money they're gonna pay crisp rat for this role.
The answer is that it's complicated, but also that there's a huge difference between Chris Pratt and predominantly small screen actors like Berry, who have been out there doing voice work as a regular staple of their body of work for more than a decade.
why would this actually be perfect …..
#y'all I'm begging you to like...google things#or check behindthevoiceactors dot com before you decide someone is stealing roles from Real Voice Actors#like just do the barest of minimums of work or read some articles about this very specific issue before you weigh in
