I. Young K - Promise
Characters: Young K x OC
Genre: fluff, slice of life
Words: 2.3k
Description: enemies to lovers! young k
A/N: Part I of the enemies to lovers series - featuring our reliable bassist!
---
All he could see ahead was miles and miles of cars, their blinding red rear lights distorting his vision. The exhaust from other cars made it hard to breathe and in his mind, he was cursing and swearing at those with cigarettes hanging from the tip of their fingers outside of their car windows; he didn't need the second hand smoke to accelerate his death.
His meeting was in 15 minutes and the cars in front of him were crawling forward at a snail's pace. Frustrated, he raved the engine of his motorcycle and tried to manoeuvre in the tight space between your vehicle and the car beside you. He moved forward at great speed but by the time he realised what was happening, it was too late. The front of his motorbike collided with the side of your car, the impact sending his bike sideways before he got thrown off his bike.
Lying on the sidewalk, the pain in his hand and leg began to set it. Using his left hand to clutch onto his injured right hand, he hissed in pain as he shot you a glare but the sight of you left him in absolute disbelief. Instead of showing care and concern for someone that you injured (like he expected you too), he found you inspecting the dent in the side of your car. He was sure the furrow in your brows was due to the pain of having to pay the high price for the car repairs, and not out of worry for him.
"Hey! You right there!"
"What!"
You finally turned around only to snap at him, and his jaw dropped open further, letting out a scoff at your attitude.
"Lady, you've just injured someone and you're more concerned about your car than a living human being? You're amazing."
"Hey, it's not my fault that you came hurtling at my car out of nowhere so stop using that tone at me."
"Have you no sympathy in your heart for an injured man?"
"I have none for rude and irresponsible people like you."
Nonetheless, despite your sharp tongue, he could see you whip out your phone to dial for the ambulance before you came over to secure his bleeding arm for him.
--
When the ambulance came, two men rushed to him. Between their moving figures that blocked you from his view, he could make out your busy figure in the back of the ambulance as you set up the equipment to test his vitals.
"She's a nurse?"
"Who are you referring to?"
The young male with sharp angular features that was tending to his arm caught onto his question and was now staring at Young K with bright doe eyes, his hands working on the procedure that he's done repeatedly for years.
"I’m referring to that girl in the back of the van. She's a nurse too?"
"Y/N? Yea she's one of us, but she’s a doctor, what about it?"
"How did she even get to become a doctor?"
The young male (whom he now knew as Wonpil - courtesy of his nametag) was now staring at Brian as if he's grown an extra head.
"What has she ever done to you?"
"She? She's the reason that you're here right now! She knocked me down and she cared more about her car than me!"
"Well, I guess that means you're a pretty shitty person."
Wonpil then carried on with his work nonchalantly and all Brian could do was roll his eyes in response, both his arms immobilised.
Amidst the drawl of the traffic around them, your clear voice cut through the din to reach the trio.
“Wonpil-ah!”
“Yes?”
“Is he done?”
“I haven’t taken a look at his leg yet!”
“It’s ok. Load him into the van first. We got to clear the tunnel. I’ll deal with his leg, you drive. Dowoon, take my car please.”
Both boys nodded in understanding before Wonpil grabbed Brain by the arms and loaded him onto the stretcher and the van.
When the door slammed shut and you turned to face him with daggers shooting out of your eyes, Brian felt like a piece of meat ready to be devoured by the female tigress.
--
“I need you to sit back and relax.”
“Lady, you really expect me to when you’re looking at me like you want to murder me?”
“My job to save lives Mr Bigshot, not snuff them out, in case you haven’t realised.”
Again, you fixed him with your signature stare.
Still, he refused to and instead, crossed his arms as he fixed you with an equally hard stare.
This time round, you gritted your teeth and made sure to slam the bottle of saline solution hard to prove your point.
Seeing that you meant business, Brian slowly unfolded his arms and leaned back as he was told to before you proceeded to roll up his pants to inspect his leg.
He watched in silence as you went about cleaning his superficial wounds, occasionally letting out a hiss when you hit a fresh wound. He noticed how he pursed your lips tight whenever you got to a particularly nasty wound, and how your breath immediately slowed, almost as though you didn’t want to disturb the patient. He continued watching as your eyebrows furrowed before you stood to give him his diagnosis.
“Your calf and ankle are swelling rather badly, especially your ankle. We’ll need to get an X-ray on that.”
“How bad is it?”
“I can’t say for sure but it’s got at least be a hairline fracture.”
The van then skidded to a stop before the doors flew open and Brian was transferred into Wonpil’s reliable hands again.
“Get him into an X-ray room, I’ll be there once I’m dressed.”
And so Brian lay there waiting on the hard metallic table for 10 minutes before you finally showed up.
--
“Finally you’ve arrived Good Doctor, thy patient has died from excessive bleeding.”
“Oh stop being so dramatic you wimp, I was only gone for 10.”
Even through the thick black glass separating you and him, Brian could spot the scowl that was clearly drawn across your face as you aggressively punched buttons on the panel to get the machine working.
“Excuse me, I don’t think a patient should be left alone at any point in time?”
Before he could even fully crane his neck to look at you, you screeched at him through the speakers.
“Would you stop moving around? I can’t get a good scan of your leg!”
For the second time that day, Brian laid back and shut his mouth on your orders and from the corner of his eye, he could see Wonpil stifling his laughter behind his fingers.
--
As Wonpil was putting the cast around his leg, Brian decided to interrogate him again.
“Is she always like that? Crazily snapping at people?”
“No. She’s pretty ok on normal days.”
“But she snaps at me all the time?”
“See, this is why she snaps at you all the time. You ask too many stupid questions.”
Curse this redhead and the Lady. I got to make them pay.
Looking out of the window, he spotted your scratched up car and he knew just the thing to do.
--
Within the next hour, you were back in his room to check on his vitals and that’s when Brian breached the topic.
“Hey Lady… about your car…”
“I haven’t gotten a quote on how much insurance you need to pay me, we’ll talk about this another time.”
“I never said I was going to pay.”
“WHAT?”
Your pen slid past the entire page, leaving a thick, ugly line across the paper.
“You heard me. I never said I was going to pay.”
He then popped a grape into his mouth and sunk back into his pillow, his arms comfortably placed behind his back as he watched your livid facial expression with glee from beneath hooded eyelids.
“You can’t do that.”
“Well, if I don’t want to pay, what can you do about it?”
And he has a point. I can’t win this fight with brute force.
You did the mental math in your head and you decided that you needed him to pay. Buying that car had drained you of your savings and you couldn’t afford another thousand dollar repair. Besides, it was partly your fault too. You should have looked before swerving out.
“How about we strike a deal?”
“Excellent! That was exactly what I had in mind.”
“So what is your proposition?”
“Be at my beck and call for my 3 day stay in the hospital. I promise I’ll pay for the insurance after that.”
After 10 minutes of unsuccessful bargaining, you left the room with a newly printed chart and a verbal promise by Brian to pay for your car repairs.
--
True to his word, Brian kept you busy for the next 3 days.
Unless he was sleeping, you had to be the runner for all his errands.
By the end of the first day, you had already gotten him sashimi for lunch, and picked up his books from his friend, Jae, just so that he can read them all.
On the second day, he texted you for an Iced Americano for his morning breakfast and apart from accidently spilling it all over your white satin blouse, you had also sprained your ankles as you stumbled over the curb by the parking spot. So, apart from ruining your outfit, you had to spend money on 2 Iced Americanos.
“That took you long enough Lady.”
“Yea, yea I know. Here’s what you asked for.”
“Thank you. Eh? What’s with that brown stain on your coat?”
“Nothing. Does your leg still hurt?”
“No but-”
“Good. Can’t talk, I got other patients to attend to.”
Were his eyes playing tricks on him, or did he notice a hobble in your step and some redness around your ankles?
--
“Could you pass me a cookie Wonpil?”
“We ran out but you can have mine.”
“Thanks.” You took his Subway cookie and took a bite out of it before exhaling.
“Why are you so busy these past 2 days?”
“Got to…do…stuff…”
“Stuff like?”
“I’ve been running errands for Brian.”
“Is that why you have a stain on your favourite satin blouse and a swollen ankle?”
“Yes.”
“The heck Y/N. Why are you still doing it for him then?”
“We had a deal and I feel bad for injuring him.”
“Well, that’s his problem! He swerved into your lane.”
“Ah it’s ok Wonpil. He’s only going to be here till tomorrow anyways. I can last another 24 hours. Thanks for the cookie! By the way, aren’t you supposed to be at the children’s ward by now?”
“Oh yes. Catch you later! I’ll patch up that ankle of yours.”
“Thanks Wonpil.”
Just as Wonpil moved into his sight, Brian moved into the shadows and immediately dialled for his friend.
“Hey Jae. Do you think you can get me a new female blouse and a pair of slippers for me? And no, don’t ask me why, just do it, please.”
--
When you came hurtling into his room with a few strands of your hair astray, Brian had to stifle his laughter.
“Oh God, Brain, are you ok?”
“I’m fine!”
“What? Then why did you press the button for?”
When he smiled knowingly at you, you marched up to him as he put up his arm in defence.
“Woah Lady-”
“Kang. Young. Hyun. This button is not for you to play around with! It says “For Emergency Use Only” This isn’t an emergency!”
You snatched the red button out of his hands and slammed it down beside his bed before you proceeded to tuck a few strands of hair behind your ears.
“What do you want?”
“I just wanted to talk.”
“Just wanted to talk – pfft. I’m leaving.”
“No I’m serious, wait.”
Before you could take another step away from him, he caught onto the ends of your sleeve and you decided to grace him with just 5 minutes of your attention.
“You have 5 minutes. Shoot.”
“I heard your conversation with Wonpil today-”
“You mean you eavesdropped on us.”
“It was unintentional! I just happened to be wheeling myself along the corridors-”
“It’s fine, just carry on.” You had said as you waved him on with a flick of your wrist.
“That means I heard about your morning misadventures and I got you these as an apology. I’m sorry.”
“What are these?” You questioned as you peered into the bag.
“Just open it. You’ll see.”
You reached in and felt the smooth satin material against your fingers before you pulled out the blouse.
“I don’t think it’s the exact same one as the one you are wearing now but I hope it suffices. I also got you a pair of flats – thought it would be better for your ankle.”
“Thank…you. Anything else that I should know?”
“No – wait, actually yes.”
You raised your eyebrows, waiting for him to continue.
“If I ever asked you out, would you say yes?”
“I’ll… consider.”
Watching your retreating back, he smiled softly as he thought to himself: At least she didn’t flatly reject me.
--
The next day, when you came back with his form of approval for discharge signed, Brian was already sitting by the edge of the bed, waiting for you.
Placing the form in front of him, you said, “Here you go Mr Bigshot. Hopefully I’ll never have to see you again.”
“Aww come on, don’t be so mean. Give me your hand.”
You opened your palm without hesitation and he placed a pink slip of paper in it.
“Do I read it now?”
“Go ahead.”
The front was a simple IOU of the car repairs but the essence of his message was written at the back, in which it said:
“Next Friday after you end work? I’ll pick you up here. Dinner’s on me; I promise I’ll pay!”
When you looked up, Brian was holding out his pinky figure towards you and you hooked onto it with your own tightly, an eyesmile forming on his face as you did so.
“Promise.”

Not so complete Outlast fic list
@midnightmusings-isolde replied to your post:
As rare as it is, I believe one of my favourite...
Hmm never read any Outlast fics. Any recommendations?
I might not be the most reliable person to ask for a rec list since I’m quite the picky fanfic reader and usually have niche tastes, if I dare say so, but I can try :D I’m not sure what characters and genres you prefer, but here are a few, unsurprisingly focusing on Trager or otherwise featuring him in an important role. I suppose it’s also needless to say that a lot of Outlast fanfics feature gore and other “mature” stuff?
Mr. Trager by @one-sadistic-bitch
Relationships: OC/Trager Status: WIP Summary: “Most of the people in this world stick by a certain way of thinking. Nobody believes in the idea of redemption anymore. Once bad, always bad, right? I know better. You see, every now and again, something sick and twisted can become something strong and beautiful. Some of the greatest things can hide in the most unlikely places. I was simply lucky to have stumbled upon one.”
I’ll leave any commentary to the author ;3 I myself am curious which direction the plot will head. If you like Trager, angst, and romance, this story might be for you. The story is narrated from a first person perspective, through the OC’s eyes.
A Crash Course in Surgery 101 by whenrosesweredragons
Status: finished Summary: “Waylon said it himself: Gluskin’s an amateur surgeon, but he had help learning what he does know.”
This is one of the stories I had in mind when I typed that post. Dark humour with Eddie asking Trager for help in surgery. This underlying sense of Trager’s resentment towards Murkoff in the story is a small bonus in my book, too. X)
Outlast: Birth by Flame by Unquiet_Grave Relationships: OC/Trager (from what I’m seeing, it’s not the focus of the story) Status: finished Summary: “After a failed suicide attempt, Mel is thrown into a secret, experimental treatment program for women at Mount Massive. She hopes to find a cure for the bizarre condition that has stolen her life away. When chaos erupts at the asylum, she is forced to survive, fighting for her life and sanity. She wants nothing more than to escape, but the other personalities living inside of her have different ideas. Another patient, a strange, Bible-thumping woman with a dark secret, may hold the key to stopping Murkoff's hellish experiments. Mel must find her first, while fending off Variants, Father Martin's cultists, Murkoff soldiers, and, most terrifying of all, her own, bloodthirsty inner demons.”
This is a story I’m currently reading myself and haven’t finished yet. Quite creative and incorporates the Outlast canon for women at Mt. Massive well. OC-centric; follows the protag’s adventures through the asylum.
This Means War by Madame_Tentacle
Status: finished Summary: “The days at Mt. Massive pass by slowly when you're an overpaid executive, but Rick has a plan to keep things moving.”
Even Outlast knows light-hearted and humorous moments... in fanfiction at least. This is a nice, funny little fanfic featuring office pranks between Rick and Jeremy.
Going Down by ravenousgrue
Status: finished Summary: “This sort of thing isn't supposed to happen to guys like Rick.”
A fic focusing on how Trager got admitted to the asylum, based on the premise of a security breach (i.e not related to the comic). This guy also has his fair share of trauma...
things Trager is not allowed to do at Mount Massive Asylum by N/A (it says “orphan_account”)
Status: finished What it says on the tin. It’s really funny. ^^
Follow the Blood by ravenousgrue
Status: finished A collection of Outlast drabbles featuring pretty much every game character you can think of. There should be something for everyone therefore. It even includes a cat’s adventure through the asylum :3
Outlast Novelization by Aalt-Jackal
Status: finished Summary: “People were being hurt, and Murkoff was making money. Miles Upshur had plans to gather the evidence that would finally break those bastards, but what he finds waiting for him in Mount Massive is more than he bargained for. Armed with only a camera and his tenacity, would he be able to survive the nightmares fabricated by the minds of broken men?”
Truth to be told, I haven’t read this one yet myself, but I feel like the list wouldn’t be sufficient if it didn’t include a novelization of the game. From what I see on the first glance, it looks good and seems to be fairly popular, too. I believe it was also rec’d on TV tropes?
Purgatorium by TheCreepingShadow (me) Status: WIP (rest assured that you can ask me about it) Summary: “"He has been playing with fire for far too long, believing himself to be its master. And in the end, he got burned." Working at Murkoff Richard Trager got more than he bargained for. After an attempted manslaughter he comes to the realization that his rank had never meant anything to Murkoff. In the end, he was just another nuisance to be disposed of. Subjected to the Morphogenic Engine treatment, he struggles to maintain the last bits of his sanity as the line between dream and reality begins to blur.”
Will I be so conceited and put my own fanfic here? Yes. Yes, I will. Just this time. This is basically a result of my moaning about the lack of Trager fanfic. Supposed to be psychological horror primarily focusing on Trager’s downfall, how he copes as an asylum patient, and how the “doctor” personality emerges.
This list is obviously far from complete. I’m pretty sure there are more Outlast fics that are good. I just haven’t read or found them all :P Other fans are welcome to add to the list and/or make their own ^^
... Pfft, what makes you think I'm obsessed with Trager?
#Outlast#Outlast fanfiction#fanfiction list#I won't lie#I do mostly search for fics featuring my faves#which is why most of these are Trager centric#there are some I left out on purpose#but otherwise#I'm not sure whether I am recommending fics for others or whether I just made a list for myself?#there are some Russian ones that I liked too#I'm sorry#I can't help myself! :D#oops#reply#midnightmusings-isolde

There was a level of clandestine stealth and security surrounding the means by which Clash first got to hear the selection of tracks chosen to offer a teasing taster of the forthcoming fifth 30 Seconds To Mars album that was unprecedented in all our past experiences with advance listens - but then 30STM are no ordinary rock band.
It’s the last day of May, and London is in full bloom amid an early-summer heatwave (which, as it turned out, was our summer), and we’ve followed top-secret directions to an undisclosed address where an LA record exec will allow us, under watchful gaze, access to his laptop and the handful of songs they’re prepared to share at this stage. Unmixed and some weeks from completion, they still sound epic: we’re pulled into giant, welcoming landscapes that share a positive and reassuring energy, made all the more invigorating in this agreeable climate.
Buoyed and fortified by this quick burst of expansive power, we’re led upstairs to meet one-third of these songs’ creators: the prolific and proficient lead singer, who’s the cause of today’s heightened secrecy.
It strikes us, as we prepare to step into Jared Leto’s suite, that today’s covert operations were entirely justified; more than just an exclusive playback of new material, this was an audience with a platinum selling, award-winning rock star, an acclaimed award-winning director, and an A-list award-winning Hollywood movie star. We were about to hang, we realised, with someone that owns an Oscar.
In a career spanning almost 25 years, Leto has remained an enigmatic and compelling talent whose pursuits have consistently afforded him a pan-generational iconic status; to those of a certain age, his turn as high-school heartthrob Jordan Catalano in 1994 TV series My So-Called Life was the catalyst for many an adolescent crush fantasy, and since 1998, 30 Seconds To Mars have risen to become stadium-filling, anthemic heroes to a legion of fans who favour a more profound and progressive brand of rock, while his on-screen conquests (including Fight Club, American Psycho, Requiem For A Dream, Chapter 27, and the imminent Blade Runner 2049) combine to form a range of immersive and stimulating roles - most triumphantly, of course, his portrayal of transgender AIDS patient Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club would earn him the Best Supporting Actor statue at the 2014 Academy Awards.
This moment, therefore, was bound to be unforgettably significant for all of us - it was the first step towards his most coveted accolade to date: a Clash cover.-
Three months later, with the capital’s tropical conditions a distant memory, we have reconvened in Central London to make this dream a reality.
A fortnight ago, 30 Seconds To Mars premiered to the world ‘Walk On Water’, the lead single from the still as-yet-untitled new album, at the MTV VMA’s in California, with a visually and physically spectacular performance captured by thermal cameras that featured a guest appearance from Travis Scott. Shannon Leto, Jared’s older brother, band co-founder and drummer, is centre stage, surrounded by an army of dancers, hammering the track’s pounding heartbeat, while guitarist Tomo Miličević intrepidly prowls amid the throng. Leering directly into camera, Jared forcefully delivers the call-to-arms’ leading question: “Do you believe that you can win this fight tonight?”
If the answer was in the trio’s self-assurance and resolve, then it would be an irrefutable ‘yes’. It’s been four-and-a-half years since the group’s previous outing, ‘Love, Lust, Faith & Dreams’, and 30 Seconds To Mars on that stage look like lions released from their cages. At our second meeting with Jared, with this track out in the wild and its successors to follow, he’s noticeably ready - and hungry - for the fight.
And so, with a new record comes new responsibilities: namely interviews. As Clash begin our line of questioning, we can’t help but wonder what the difference is, for the ultimate renaissance man such as Jared Leto, between talking about music and the other mediums he’s so involved in.
“That’s a good question,” is the welcome response. “I think the difference with music is that it’s a very intimate and personal process. When you make a film, you work with really a large group of people and it is very collaborative. When you make music, it’s a much smaller team. Over the years it’s been mostly my brother and I - we’ve done this since we were kids - so sharing that with family makes it different right from the get-go. It’s just special; it’s hard to really compare it to anything else. Writing music starts from the most simple, most humble beginning and can turn into something that really connects in such a powerful way around the globe, so it’s a very beautiful process that a thought, an idea, can in turn end up touching so many people and in such a deep way. It certainly has for me in my life; music has changed me. It has been my soundtrack, it has been my companion, it has been my inspiration, and so many artists have taught me about life and the world through their writing.”
Unlike the punishing press schedule that actors endure, musicians are less obligated to promote their product - Frank Ocean, for example, is refusing all interview requests - so, if his music is so personal and intimate, why doesn’t Jared simply let it speak for itself?
“I guess I’m motivated to do [interviews] because I recognise that it’s a great way to spread the word,” he reasons. “Music is meant to be consumed, just like… I guess it’s kinda like cooking; if you’re at home and you’ve made a big dinner and you put all the food out on the table, it’s certainly a lot nicer when people show up and consume the meal. In order for that, you need to invite people to do it, so I think I look at this as like the invitation process.”
Facing this mouth-watering banquet he’s laid before himself, Jared is practically tucking a napkin into his collar and sharpening his knives - he’s more than ready to gorge on music once more. “It’s been a long time coming, and we’re excited about the new music,” he attests. “In four-and-a-half years a lot happens, and the world changes - you change - and I think you can hear that change on the album. I think it’s a different album, and I think people are going to be pretty surprised by the songs they hear.”
As persistent and intense as always, on these new songs, 30 Seconds To Mars have refined the electronic inflections of ‘Love, Lust, Faith And Dreams’ and the more expressive qualities of it predecessor, 2009’s ‘This Is War’, to create something palpably vivid in its passionate perspective and connectivity.
Jared’s boundless enthusiasm can also be put down to the relief and gratitude he feels to even be in this position again. His 2012 documentary, Artifact, captured the traumatic experience of 30STM battling with their record label, EMI, in a $30 million breach-of-contract lawsuit that threatened their very existence - “We went to war,” he says, “and it wasn’t easy.” The conflict would ultimately produce the justly dramatic ‘This Is War’, but the whole brutal ordeal did little to dampen the band’s creative spirits. “There was a lot at stake, and that experience changed our lives. It taught us about ourselves, this business of music, and there were great lessons to be learned in that experience.”
Almost a decade after their legal wrangles, Jared is optimistic about the progress made by the music industry in that time that now allows 30STM to prosper - the business, he says, is “more transparent, and I think it’s got better, because musicians have the ability to have a louder voice and to speak to their audience directly. We were signed a decade before Facebook, or more. We were signed six or seven years before YouTube. The world has changed so much and I think for the better.”
Adding to Artifact and the series of 30STM videos he’s directed, Jared is continuing the tradition of marrying his two favourite mediums - music and film - in album companion pieces with A Day In The Life Of America, which picks up on the themes present in this new album. “Times are changing,” he warns in ‘Walk On Water’, and this film aims to document their impact on modern America through the viewpoints of those both within and without the country. “It really could be about any country in the world right now,” he argues. “I think so many of us are going through similar things. We’re all so connected now. I mean, people are asking really crucial questions - who are we, who do we want to be, what kind of country do we want to live in - and I think that it’s hard to tell the story of America without telling the story of the world.”
Having sent out 92 films crews across all 50 states, and extended a global invitation for a submission of clips, they have amassed reams of contributions, “from the Middle East to China to Africa and beyond,” that promise to form an insightful and objective portrait of our planet today.
Clearly, Jared relishes being in the distinctly fortunate and enviable position that allows him to exercise his inquisitive and inventive mind in a number of fields - in addition to music and movies, he’s become further aligned with fashion, more recently appearing in campaigns for Gucci at the behest of his best friend, the brand’s creative director, Alessandro Michele - but, like the fearless looks he’s rocked on red carpets of late (Gucci, naturally), his judgements have always followed a rather maverick trajectory - as exemplified in his diverse choice of non-conformist movie roles.
“I like to be challenged,” he says of his attraction to projects. “I like to be provoked creatively, and I like an opportunity that pushes me to a new place and teaches me something. I love to learn, and it’s a good opportunity when you’re doing these things to be slightly off balance, to be on uncertain creative grounds.” He points to A Day In The Life Of America, the VMAs and the experimental nature of their new songs as representative of his latest forays into unknown territories. “And it’s not just the result,” he adds, “it’s the process of how do you do these things, how do you prepare for these things, how do you craft and figure out the production and the technical side of things that is part of the journey itself.”
It’s a particularly individualistic journey that Leto has undertaken, one driven by instinct and inspiration, but not one he could necessarily do alone. “You follow your gut and your heart and your head,” he says of his method of working, “and you build a great team of people who can help bring your vision to life.”
When it comes to 30STM, therefore, how lucky he is to have such an attuned collaborator as his brother. “[Shannon] is the reason that we are doing this,” he states. “He was the one that kinda led the charge with music. He was the one that always saw the future here… To have been doing it for this long is absolutely mind-blowing, and we don’t take it for granted for a single second… You know, we talk often about how fortunate we are and how grateful we are to be in the position that we’re in.”
That familiarity also enables Jared the freedom to truly be who he wants to be on stage: himself. Though screen characters have required drastic physical transformations - he piled on the pounds to play Mark Chapman in Chapter 27, and became practically emaciated for Dallas Buyers Club - and a method-like immersion in character (his Joker wreaked havoc on his Suicide Squad co-stars, who claim never to have met Jared Leto), there is no mask worn by the lead singer of 30STM. “Music is incredibly personal,” he affirms. “It’s about pulling the veil back. It’s about sharing as much of yourself as you can, or your thoughts, whether it’s your head, your heart, or your guts, whatever. Your spirit - whatever that is. You know, it’s not about taking on an imaginary set of circumstances and building a character. I’m never more of myself than when I’m standing on stage. There’s an absence of character.”
Daunting to some, that prospect is entirely natural to Jared Leto, who professes to feeling more comfortable performing in front of 140,000 people than he does holding a conversation with one person in a restaurant, and it’s the foundation of 30STM’s unfaltering relatability that ensures they remain a pertinent and provocative band for our times. “You can never stop learning,” Jared says of their perceptive and exploratory nature, which thankfully shows no sign of ever abating - unlike our conversation, which draws to an end as cryptically as it began. “Craft isn’t something that ends. Songs are elusive - they’re like dreams,” he smiles knowingly, “they’re hard to catch a hold of.”

XCOM: Chimera Squad review – a generous and inventive spin on a tactical classic • Eurogamer.net
Breaching a room is one of those weird things that games turn out to be brilliant at. It’s pure tactics – information with stimulating gaps in it. A bunch of bad guys are waiting behind closed doors. You know some things about them but you don’t know everything. How are you going to open the doors?
XCOM: Chimera Squad review
Developer: Firaxis Games
Publisher: 2K Games
Platform: Reviewed on PC
Availability: Out now on PC
It’s a wonder, really, that it’s taken a classic tactics series like XCOM so long to try a bit of breaching. XCOM 2 encouraged you to think of ambushes, sure, but with XCOM: Chimera Squad, the latest instalment in the series and a standalone adventure with a somewhat focused scope, breaching finally has its moment.
And it’s glorious. Chimera’s missions play out room by room, essentially – or encounter by encounter really as most of the game’s spaces are multi-room environments – and with none of the prolonged knocking around looking for a fight that previous XCOM games used to feature. Each encounter starts with a breach. You choose your door, you choose who opens it and who goes in next, you plan, you fiddle around, you change your plan and switch everyone out again and have a comforting Pop-Tart – just me? – and then you commit.
Pure tactics, information with gaps in it: every door tells you how high the likelihood is that you’ll take damage. Every door generally offers its own twists too. Maybe your shots will stun if you use this door. Maybe they’ll crit. Maybe the first one through can’t miss. Maybe the last one through won’t be able to move afterwards. Maybe everyone gets free Overwatch. Generally you have a choice of doors and windows to spread your four-person team across, and you can buy items as the game progresses that allows access to new doors – security doors and vents, say. I love this breach moment – it’s new, but it already feels like pure XCOM. You’ve thought about the odds, the perks. You’ve lined up your guys. Pop-Tart. BREACH.
Once you’re through time gets wonderfully thick and soupy. It reminds me a little of the stand-offs in John Woo’s Stranglehold, may it rest in glorious peace. Everyone gets a chance to breach fire – which means you each get a free shot as you scramble through the doors. If you’re playing on easy where the dice are loaded in your favour, four people coming through a door can often clear out four baddies. But even if you’re not, once the breach fire period is over your team scramble to cover and then it’s classic XCOM. Turns, cover, dice rolls, disaster.
Except it’s not, because everywhere throughout Chimera Squad there are playful tweaks and rebalances. Firaxis always strike me as the molecular gastronomists of the strategy and tactics world, a wide, dappled genre that in itself is sort of the molecular gastronomy of video games. Anyway: Firaxis can’t stop fiddling with things. Instead of foams and crumbs and airs, though, these designers like to dig down into the basics of a game and ask fundamental questions. Chimera Squad asks: hey, how about breaching? And then it asks: how about smaller maps, which play out as stacked encounters, so there’s no fat, as it were, no connective tissue to worry about.
But it hasn’t stopped tweaking there. In classic XCOM you move your guys and then the aliens move their guys. Chimera Squad opts for interleaved moves. Wonderful word, interleaved. Precise and papercrafty – one for the specialists, the scholars, the obsessives. Interleaved moves means one of your guys makes a move, and maybe one of theirs goes next? It makes fights much more dynamic, and more personal. You have more power, but with XCOM that always means the power to screw up. Classic XCOM meant that a situation you hadn’t foreseen could pop up and be resolved – usually tragically – in the course of an alien turn with little for you to do but stand around and take it. Classic XCOM was somewhat concerned with the delicious pain of tactical paralysis.
By contrast, Chimera Squad means you can see a situation develop and then you have the chance to do something, because you might get a turn in between two alien turns. But with that power comes the fact that this is still XCOM: clear shots can miss, aliens can be extra sneaky, things can go wrong in enormously creative ways. Interleaved moves bring great invention and dynamism and even wit to the game. And of course, it’s all information with gaps in it: the turn ticker is clearly visible on one side of the screen, and there are unit powers that allow you to sacrifice a shot, say, for the chance to change the order of turns to your advantage, to shuffle one of your cards in before one of theirs and save the day. Or try to save it, anyway. But what will the response be?
How deep does the tinkering with the basics go? It’s wrong with Chimera Squad even to talk of your turns and alien turns. This latest game plays out after the events of XCOM 2, in a city where humanity and aliens are trying to get along together. How are things going? Well, in the opening cut-scene the mayor is blown up in a truck. So they’re not going very well. I think Firaxis is aiming for something a bit like The Third Man’s Berlin, parcelled up amongst uneasy “allies”. It’s a lovely setting for an XCOM game. Previously they’ve concerned themselves with invasions. This one’s more about insurrection – insurrection played out in three acts, and three factions’ investigations.
And all of this means that your squad is formed of human and alien team-members. The focus on Chimera Squad is much more personal than most XCOM games. Your team have cut-scenes and names and personalities and dialogue and banter and everything. It’s XCOM: the Saturday Morning Cartoon, even before you get to the stylised storytelling sequences that use lurid four-colour layouts and halftones that can’t help but remind me – oh glory! – of the beautifully ugly excesses of Codename STEAM.
Does it feel weird that you can’t name your own soldiers anymore? In truth, I didn’t miss it that much. After a few hours I’d forgotten that I ever used to go into battle with units named after my favourite takeaway restaurants. I started to feel close to my new guys, from the awkward muton who sometimes sounds like Jeff Bridges to the techy who always misses – for me at least – but has a drone that shocks anyone who gets too close, a kind of electrical wasp at the XCOM picnic. Keeping units alive for the whole game means that XCOM’s power snowball thing is in full effect: you can get to a point where everyone’s so riddled with interesting skills that you start to feel bad for the guys you’re up against. But I was still learning to get the best out of people by the end of the surprisingly involved campaign. One of my guys had psionic powers and could change places with any unit on the battlefield. This meant if a mission-critical baddy was making a break for the exit I could swap places and move them into the heart of my ranks. But it also meant I could zap high cost baddies over to exploding barrels and then touch them off. The fun never ends.
Ah the campaign. Given the low price for a standalone game I was expecting Chimera Squad to clock in at about three or four hours. In truth, it kept me busy for two days on my first playthrough. What’s happened, I think, is a narrowing of focus: shorter missions, smaller teams, a simpler strategy layer and throughline.
I think the new strategy layer is fantastic. I love settling in for a game of XCOM 2, knowing that I’ll be dozens of hours deep before I realise I made a crucial mistake at the two hour mark, but it can be quite an elbowy and confusing game, with layouts, maps, and perhaps not quite the clearest sense of all the things you should be focusing on, at least for your first chaotic attempt. Chimera Squad is much more straightforward. Base building’s out and the whole thing is set in a single city as you chase down a single mystery, one suspect faction at a time. Alongside missions that advance the story, you also have missions that earn you resources and also allow time to pass until the next story mission becomes available. While all this is going on you have to monitor the whole city, making sure tension never gets too high in each of the districts. Completing missions in a district will bring the tension down, but you can also buy agencies that sit in each district and have limited powers to calm things down in interesting ways, or at least freeze the escalation for a few turns. All of this is presented via a 3D map that is colour-coded so you can instantly see how things are going. If most districts are blue, then happy days, as Tuffers would say. I wouldn’t mind getting Tuffers in an XCOM team.) If they start to turn towards red you’re going to have to do something.
There is a term for this kind of thing – I want to call it the small blanket problem or something like that? Anyway, in classic XCOM style, you never have enough time and resources and people to maintain total calm in the city. You’re always making trade-offs. And when it comes to your people the trade-offs never stop. You need four team-members to go out on missions, but you also want to staff the streamlined lab that makes breakthroughs and allows for new gadgets. You want to send people away on Spec-Ops that earn you resources or may lower tension in the city. If people are wounded – or if you just want to improve their stats – you’ll want to send them for training. All of this means you’re juggling who you can actually take out shooting, trying to make sure everybody gets leveled up nicely and gets new abilities, while also ensuring that nobody’s battle damage results in untreated “scars” that affect their stats.
It’s a lot to think about – of course it is, it’s XCOM. But Chimera Squad is a lot more approachable than XCOM 2. It’s more direct, less expansive, sure, but also a little less muddlesome to stupid people like me. This isn’t XCOM 3, but it isn’t pretending to be. It’s something different – a characterful, sharp-edged, surprisingly rich side-quest. It will keep me busy for hours and hours, I think. That’s the thing about doors – I always want to know what’s on the other side.
