" you must be proud of her. " he spoke out loud the part sunday was trying not to call much attention to. the ever — so — subtle flutter of his wings, the upward turn of his lips. it's hard to hide such tells from aventurine. though he may chalk it up all to luck & rarely ever to any actual skill, his time at the table made him quite aware of other's.
" there is nothing wrong in bragging a little , is there ? " he may not have much experience in the way of sibling bonds due to losing his own sister at such a young age. aventurine is still a younger sibling & despite thinking his family would be disappointed in him if they ever saw him now — bragging about your baby sibling seems to be the elder's right. yet — sunday does not take advantage of it. hmm — how interesting.
" i will admit, tea is not my first drink of choice. " there is a small shrug of the shoulders. " normally, i would ask for something stronger — if you get what i mean. " a playful wink, though his expression turned to a pout followed by a small sigh shortly after. " but alas, i got a meeting later today so the fun will have to wait until after. don't get me wrong though — the tea does sound appealing. "
" IT is the obvious outcome given robin's popularity. " there is a slight air of pride to his statement even if he feigns nonchalance. it was clear just by the way the corners of his lips turned upward in a minimal fashion that he enjoyed speaking of his sister. her successes were things that set his heart and mind at ease. though he did his best to not boast too much pride be it improper of someone of his stature yet the way his wings fluttered ever-so-slightly amplified his true excitement he felt whenever robin was the topic.
taking his phone out momentarily sunday swiped briefly at the screen before returning it to his pocket. his gaze affixed to aventurine's face trying his best to read into what this man's intentions were. eyes were normally the gateway to reading a person yet aventurine was still difficult to tell anything about. it was frustrating more than anything.
" i sent request for a set of cups and the tea. it should arrive in a moment. " he'd remain silent for a moment before a question at the back of his mind came forward. " you do not strike me as a person with a liking of tea. did robin's advertisement truly impact you that greatly? "

SIMPLE THINGS - Chapter five
Chapter five - excerpt : Granted, the subsequent sexual encounter might have been quite imaginary, it dìd prove to Charlotte she was still alive inside. Chapter five Amsterdam, the Netherlands
1.
Amsterdam did not hold many secrets for Charlotte anymore. She had visited the scenic city many times before and so the site had somehow become a familiarity to her. She would never have realised that if Tom hadn’t requested her to send him some pictures of the Netherlands’ capital.
Yes. Tom.
His first message came as quite a surprise, but not an unwelcome one. And Charlotte gladly obliged to the kind wish of this man who had kept his word and sent her some not-so-touristy addresses she ought to visit while in Hamburg and Berlin - her next destinations.
Charlotte’s phone shots mostly consisted of her favourite sights such as the bridges over the breath-taking canals, boats, strings of light bulbs lighting up pop-up summer bars in the park and the beautiful restored architecture that took her breath away as if it were the first time she’d laid eyes upon it. Thank you Tom for reminding me of this.
The Convention didn’t take up much of her time for a change. Charlotte gladly took the opportunity to stop by the floating flower market for some fresh flowers, and browse through one of her favourite flea markets where she picked up a few books before boarding the intercity train home later that afternoon.
With her new acquisitions all packed up, Charlotte strolled down to the Central Station. Upon entering the building, that felt more like the ‘arrivals and departures’- scene at any given airport, she walked passed some colourful shops. She hopped in one to get herself a refreshing drink for the ride home and upon queueing at the cash register, her eyes scanned over the headlines of the international press that was presented there. One specific title in big bold letters called out to her. A tabloid read out in bold red print : ‘Tom Hiddleston spotted with mystery woman’.
Charlotte laughed a little louder than planned as she detected the picture showcased in fact his publicist’s intern. She shook her head in amusement; was this the man she was currently sending touristy pictures to? Felt a bit silly really…
Charlotte couldn’t deny that over the start of the summer her life had somehow taken an unexpected and bizarre turn. While her professional life had continued to overshadow her private life, she did seem to have found a somewhat manageable and unique balance between the two.
In the sense that she would combine her professional obligations at conferences abroad with some extra me-time. She would try to extend her stay as far as time or reason allowed, so she could go and explore the cities and come to herself before starting all over again somewhere else.
In her head her plan seemed picture perfect, in reality she came to realise she really ought to prepare these kinds of visits just a little bit more. Tom’s tips came in more than handy here… She caught her lips curving into a smile.
Stop it! Silly girl...
Up until now Charlotte had managed to keep her head on straight, regardless of her hectic schedule. She was tired but ambitious, worn-out at times but always remained curious and anxious for what came next. And then came London... the visit that shook her up a bit. It felt as if the carpet had suddenly been pulled out from under her feet. Metaphorically she’d stumbled at first, taken quite the fall nevertheless but then got up again, feeling quite unsure and apprehensive. It had been a dizzying 72 hours, but equally exhilarating nonetheless.
Granted, the subsequent sexual encounter might have been quite imaginary, it dìd prove to Charlotte she was still alive inside. It reminded her of her youth, her possibilities and – let’s be honest - her needs. And upon returning home Charlotte had deemed herself finally ready to gently ease herself back into the dating game, much to her best friend Elisabeth’s joy. The ‘Lizzie’ to her ‘Charlie’. Ever understanding, ever supportive, but ever impatient as well. So before Charlotte was good and well aware ‘Lizzie’ had her all set up for a blind date later that night.
Charlotte did her best not to take any offence in Lizzie’s sudden matchmaking extravaganza - lord knows how long she’d been pushing the matter - but decided to ‘just go with it’.
Charlotte switched her phone into flight mode as she boarded the train. She had a thing with flight mode. The thrill of being able to cut out all outside intrusions was one she often indulged in. And right now she had opted to treat herself to some lounge music while reading. With two hours to kill, it seems the perfect getaway from reality.
She settled in her seat, earphones plugged in, loungy music on and one of her new acquirements resting in her hands. She admired the mysterious cover for a while. It was a book Tom had highly recommended to her. Intrigued, she curiously delved in.
WIthin no less than a dozen pages, to her greatest surprise, the words struck home to both Charlotte and her wounded heart.
“Even though I complain sometimes it (his heart) said, it’s because I am the heart of a person, and people’s hearts are that way. People are afraid to pursue their most important dreams because they feel they don’t deserve them, or that they won’t be able to achieve them.
Many years ago Charlotte had lost her heart to a man. Well, a boy still when they’d first met. And she’d treasured him just as much as he had treasured her. They had gone through so much together; they left the university-benches together and dived headfirst into their professional lives. And while they took their time to search where their respective professional futures lay, they wasted no time on their personal future and got married. She’d truly followed her heart.
Fairly soon he was on his road to success, while Charlotte struggled. They bought a flat with a breath-taking view over the park but by then the marriage was already in heavy weather...
Charlotte’s stomach turned into a knot as the narrative in the book went on.
"We, their hearts, become fearful just thinking of loved ones who go away, or of moments that could have been good, but weren’t, or treasures that might have been found but were forever hidden in the sands. Because when these things happen we suffer terribly.”
You see; back then, in her professional life Charlotte had only faced glass ceilings and struggled with the balance between professional and private life. A struggle her husband had failed to see or recognize.
Evidently work demanded they would started moving in different circles, networking, meeting new people, investing. He had to put in crazy hours, there was no energy left for other struggles. And Charlotte definitely felt like a struggle he wanted to do without. Or one he could do without.
It astounded her really. After all, they had overcome so much together; she always thought their relationship had a solid foundation that could resist any type of storm. But somehow, in this phase of their lives, she felt as if their marriage was built on nothing more than a children’s floaty. Whimsical, terrifyingly unpredictable. To make matters worse, in his opinion there was only room for one career in a marriage. Charlotte begged to differ but for the sake of her marriage she gave up trying to pursue more , thinking it would make her happier and by result him as well. Only it didn’t.
She wasn’t suffering though, not anymore , Charlotte thought. With pain in her heart, she had to accept the crumbling of their relationship, their understanding and ultimately their love. She had fought and sacrificed, alas it takes two to tango and their paths lay so far apart now. Closing the door on her marriage, she closed off the door to love in general. Although the divorce was ultimately somehow a mutual decision; that didn’t mean it hurt any less. He had been a part of her past and present, but sadly no longer held her future and that insight hurt. Those who say infidelity hurts the most, meet ‘indifference’; the very close runner up!
"My heart is afraid it will have to suffer,” said the boy.
“Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams because every second of the search is an encounter with God….”
Charlotte had turned her focus now solely on her professional life where all of a sudden – to her a delight - a glass ceiling started showing subtle cracks. She grasped the opportunity with both hands, diving into work and research at full speed, ignoring all else.
Her wings had been clipped in the past, she felt she owed it to herself to open them up now and fly. Far, far away. And she dreaded the day (or the person) who would even try to confine her again.
It caused her an occasional lecture from her best friend Lizzie, but was it clear to outsiders as well that she had closed herself off like this? Or was Tom’s recommendation of this particular book just a happy – albeit freakishly strange - coincidence?
Cracking open the door to my heart wasn’t enough; must you take down the entire façade as well?
Realising the answer to this question was irrelevant she immediately engrossed herself further in the book. Charlotte felt tears stinging as the chapter went on. Before she knew it, she was halfway along the book when the train halted at her destination. She left the train with a heavy heart, an emotional wound but a regained insight. She shook her head and tucked her new favourite book in her purse.
2. It had to be said : Charlotte was pleasantly surprised that she was greeted with a very charming man that evening.
Well done Lizzie!
He was tall and dressed to the nines, with dark hair, piercing green eyes and a handsome smile to match. She had an inkling he knèw he had charm, but she was not yet sure if he played that card.
He turned out to be both charismatic and intelligent. Charlotte had to fight her inner cynic who immediately wanted to find out what was ‘wrong’ with him in order for him to be single, temporarily forgetting he might as well have the same reservations towards her.
They shared appetizers while talking about the current heat wave, the local news, bits and bobs. It was mildly entertaining, at least as far as anxious blind dates can go. It would seem a lovely dinner would ensue.
The man was athletic, which made him easy on the eye however not on the mind. It started when dinner was ordered and gluten was off limits. “Not allergic,” he elaborated, “but bad for my physique.” Charlotte however gladly indulged in a homemade Sicilian pasta stew. It wasn’t meant as a rebellious act, she was simply a not-so-secret foodie.
We’re on the fence here, ladies and gentlemen, but let us not jump to conclusions…
When the topic of interest came up, it was clear they could not have been more divers and while in her mind that thrilled her, she found he held no remote interest in her hobbies. In fact; he was quite opinionated. She may have been as well, but isn’t there some sort of grey zone? Or the illusion of politeness for starters?
Strike 1.
He considered art as overrated and too pricey. While Charlotte could agree on the financial matter, but ‘overrated’? Seriously? He considered literature old and stuffy, and commented along the lines of “honestly who reads these days.”
Strike 2.
Also, he left his smartphone on the table during the entire dinner and wasn’t too shy to check it at times. Hel-lo?
Strike 3.
Charlotte had learned long ago to be honest about her desires and so by the end of dinner, after the coffee and the dessert, when he suggested drinks at a wine & lounge bar, she politely refused. She was knackered and the foresight of spending more time going through pointless conversation frustrated her.
She kindly bid her farewell and at his attempt to a ‘let’s do this again maybe’ Charlotte carefully added she did not see any point in that. Kind as he might have been. She was met with a surprised reaction. Apparently he did not expect an answer as honest as this, even though he did feel the same.
Was it not ok to just step forward and say things like this, then?
Clearly he wasn’t a feminist either. Or was she just high maintenance?
You’re out!
On her walk home, Charlotte unmuted her smartphone. At least shé had the common sense to zone out outside distractions during her date. As expected Lizzie had already dropped several lines to her. And Charlotte was about to – and very gingerly so – elaborate on the horror-date, “ 3 hours down the drain, did I rush home for this ?” when she made another, more pleasant, discovery.
Tom had replied to her Amsterdam snapshots. It instantly lifted her mood to read her pictures had brought ‘joy to his heart’ before going on to share an equally amusing as eloquent anecdote on his day. Clearly a man who reads , the devil on her shoulder fired back to her long-gone date.
3.
After London, Charlotte had adjusted his name on her contact list to the more fitting ‘Instigator Tom’. She grinned as they exchanged some messages back and forth. As it appeared Charlotte wasn’t the only one who had suffered a lousy end to a promising evening; Tom had gone through a crappy day as well. In an attempt to lighten the mood, she carefully informed him :
I started reading ‘The Alchemist’<<
>>And? Your thoughts so far?
There was this quote that I cannot shake…<< ”You will never be able to escape from your heart.<< So it's better to listen to what it has to say”<< So tonight, I listened to it.<<
Tom’s lips curved into a smile while he tapped on his phone that that was undoubtedly a very wise decision on her behalf. Although he did sympathise for her date gone wrong. He chuckled out loud when Charlotte swiftly countered with a “you should be, it’s all your fault really - recommending that book and all…” And he gladly and sincerely apologized to her.
To his surprise her date turned out to be a blind date, and before he was well aware he had sent out :
>> So, it was a ‘blind’ date? Forgive me for saying, but you don’t strike me as the type who would need a set-up?
I’ll take the compliment ;-) <<
So Charlotte had went on a date, a blind one at that. While Tom wanted to think 'good for her', his mind fixated on 'single'. Truly, he wanted nothing more than to bond with her on the difficulties of dating but found himself lacking for any decent answer in that department because he simply did not date. Not anymore.
Long gone were the days were he would (or could) just go out and strike up a conversation with a woman and see where it went. He wasn’t around long enough to let anything flourish, let alone bloom. Not at all. When he wasn’t working, his days or evenings were filled with press tours, interviews, premiers, gala's. Maybe an occasional party. But the essence of it all was always exactly the same. Someone would pull on his sleeve, demanding him to ' come and meet someone' . Someone in his line of work, someone up and coming, someone he should definitely rub shoulders with. Meet so and so. Talk, discuss, network. At times it really wàs lovely and interesting. But the horrible truth of the matter remained that Tom was living by his work schedule and not by his heart. A very conscious decision he’d made many years ago, that had somehow turned into a grueling reality these days.
So he replied to Charlotte in the only way he could, by truthfully confiding in her and sharing the loneliness of the ‘picture perfect actors’ behind the spotlights.
Thank you for saying that. However, I find this very doubtful… <<
>> It is the truth though, I’m afraid.
He hesitated for a moment, before daring to question her :
>> You’ve not been dating long?
No. Just easing into it again. (Peer pressure)<< It’s been a while…<<
Tom unknowingly bit his lower lip, subsequently running his tongue over it while he wondered how he could diplomatically find out more without seeming crass or rude. Did she suffer from a bad break-up? To his surprise she very easily and clearly admitted that the only thing she ‘suffered from’ was a lonely divorce.
A divorce?
Charlotte chuckled and shook her head when Tom apologized via text - as if he had anything to do with her marital status… A short text of his followed asking her what had happened and then a third one; another apology because he reasoned his asking was ‘probably rather indiscrete’.
She was unaware that a heavy sigh escaped her lips as she delved deep into her thoughts before typing out:
That’s all right. I guess ‘life’ happened?<< Feels like failure though.<<
Or the death slot on the goose board. Back to square one.<<
(can’t believe I just said that)<<
Goes to show, I’m damaged goods. Steer clear ;-)<<
Her answer came out in a series of separate texts. The obvious proof her mind was still processing somewhat. Tom’s benevolent reply that she shouldn’t be too hard on herself, warmed her heard. After all, he reasoned “Sometimes it’s nice to start over? Or heal.”
So they say… <<
Dot. End of the line.
Charlotte kept silent after this. Nothing more was to be said on the matter, was there? In London, Tom thought long and hard about a decent reply… In his heart he felt he could not end this conversation on those last words of her.
>> If memory serves me well, the book also says : “Don't give in to your fears. If you do, you won't be able to talk to your heart.”
Charlotte smiled to herself as a text followed in which he reasoned “we’re not meant nor made to be alone” and that her peer pressuring friends are right in pushing her forward after nearly a year on the bench. “Someone to talk to late at night, Someone to cuddle, … not to be underestimated!”
He shook his head to himself when he caught himself typing that the end of a marriage isn’t the be all - end all. And while he fervently dreamed he would never have to experience a divorce first-hand, sometimes it was simply the right thing to do. If only you handled it well. In which case he referred to his parents and the toll it could possibly take on the young children involved. But Charlotte had no children, she was young enough to start over. And there is no harm in that.
Now this is some very cheap therapy , a mirthless grin at his own expense.
>> Not all storms come to disrupt your life, Charlotte, some come to clear your path.
A pause.
>> Besides, there’s always the prison-slot. Just a time-out until someone sets you free.
… isn’t that a Sting song?<<
>> Avoiding the point Charlotte..
:-) << Thank you for recommending the book to me though.. <<
>> I hold it close to my heart. I had a feeling you might appreciate it as well.
Charlotte heaved a content sigh and confessed that, indeed, all she wanted to to was to get home and finish the book. To her surprise he correctly guessed she would and should just do that in her garden. Good memory, young man. Bonus points for you.
She agreed with him and shared her intent of making a fresh mint tea first. Because when you read in the garden at night, this was the only way to do it right. He chuckled to himself and confessed how much he could relate to that.
Their conversation ended with wishing the other a good night and the promise of more book recommendations.
Placing his smart phone away, Tom reminisced on the sneak-peak he’d gotten of her heart and it was not what he had imagined it to be. In his eyes she was intelligent, beautiful and carefree. He never considered her broken hearted. Goes to show everybody hides behind a façade, he realised. It made him like her just a little bit more.

This article outlines the repercussions of the United States’ choice to end funding for programs such as WFP in our unwavering support for our ally, Israel. Funding cuts for WFP will damage its ability to provide food, clothing, and housing aide to Palestinians, but will also cause many people to lose their jobs and many businesses to lose customers/profit. Currently, Gaza’s economy is failing, there is an incredibly high unemployment rate (more than 50%), and food insecurity is skyrocketing.
The manipulation of food and resources for the Palestinians, specifically by the Trump administration, exemplifies our extensive pursuit to maintain alliance with Israel and push Palestinians towards cooperation. When it comes to our monetary support, do we have a right to choose to put our money where our mouth is, even at an incredibly high costs for Palestinians? How far is too far? Will this attempt to force Palestinians into complying with peace talks be successful or will we just continue to fuel the humanitarian crisis? Throughout this article, I was reminded of the realism theory in international relations, which declares the pursuit of power as the number one priority for all states in our world. According to this theory, human rights will never take precedent over pursuits for power, specifically when the two are pitted against each other. Sadly, as this conflict carries on into 2019, so will the suffering of all civilians involved. The only way to end the extreme violence, human rights abuses, and declining access to resources is to end the conflict in the region; much easier said than done.

The Australian Dream?
Adam Goodes; Adnyamatheanha and Narunggaman, fierce social justice advocate and champion AFL player. A man all at once personifying a nation’s deepest shame, racist foundations and yet, the spark of reconciliation.
As an AFL player, Goodes holds an elite place in AFL history as a dual Brownlow Medallist, dual premiership player, four-time All-Australian team, member of the Indigenous Team of the Century and representative of Australia in the International Rules Series. In addition, he has held the record for the most AFL games played by an Indigenous player. He is a bonefide champion of the game. But more importantly, it is his work off the field where he has had his biggest impact. Goodes is a proud Aboriginal man and leader of his community. He works tirelessly with aboriginal communities and is a strong anti-racism activist and was awarded the honour of Australian of the Year in 2014 for his exceptional social justice advocacy.
Yet, during the Indigenous round game in 2013, Goodes was subject to racial abuse by a 13 year old supporter of the opposition, who called him an ‘ape’. This event proved to be the catalyst for a tumultuous 3 years in which Goodes’ actions, motivations and ‘Australian-ness’ became public fodder. He was subjected to targeted, loud and sustained ‘booing’ at the game by opposition supporters. The motivations for, and acceptability of this booing became the subject of rabid national debate. Everyone from Tony Abbott to Sam Newman shared their varying opinions as to why they felt it was occurring. Sadly, the media coverage of the issue only served to escalate the booing. These same supporters who had vilified Goodes, were incensed during the Indigenous round in 2015, Goodes celebrated a goal by performing an indigenous war dance in which he mimed throwing a spear in the direction of the Carlton cheer squad. Goodes said after the incident that the dance was based on one he learned from under-16s indigenous team the Flying Boomerangs, and that it was intended as an expression of indigenous pride during Indigenous Round, not as a means of offending or intimidating the crowd. In an act of advocacy and bravery, paralleled with Nicky Winmar’s iconic lifting of the jumper, Goodes yet again, inadvertently fuelled racially motivated supporter booing and commentary from the media. Tragically, the toll of the sustained systemic, institutional and direct racism suffered by Goodes led to him prematurely retiring in 2015. Goodes has yet to engage with the AFL on the matter.
Was this booing an opportunity for racists to jeer or simply, tall poppy syndrome? Where did the AFL stand on the issue? And what were the responsibilities of the clubs to educate their supporters on issues of racism and Australia’s dark history?
Two recent documentaries offer records of this sad chapter of Australian sport and have reignited discourse on the racism suffered by Goodes. The Final Quarter (2019),offers archival footage, unaccompanied by narration. Whereas, The Australian Dream (2019) serves as the perfect sequel, and explores the racism surrounding these events and offers a glimmer of hope towards reconciliation. Interestingly, on the eve of the premiere of The Final Quarter, the all too silent AFL and all of its 18 clubs issued an unreserved apology for the sustained racism and events which drove Goodes out of the game. They said: ‘Adam, who represents so much that is good and unique about our game, was subject to treatment that drove him from football. The game did not do enough to stand with him, and call it out. Failure to call out racism and not standing up for one of our own let down all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players, past and present. Our game is about belonging. We want all Australians to feel they belong and that they have a stake in the game. We will not achieve this while racism and discrimination exists in our game... We will stand strongly with all in the football community who experience racism or discrimination. We are unified on this, and never want to see the mistakes of the past repeated’ (AFL, 2019).
Too little too late, AFL.
The national and institutional racial violence and suffered by Goodes during these years serves as a grotesque reminder of the deeply racist and misguided attitudes held by many Australians. Goodes’ experience echoes Ahmed’s idea that ‘those who embody diversity should pay increasing costs for not inhabiting institutional norms would further the injustice of how those norms support and enable the progression of some more than others’ (Ahmed, 2017 p.129). Australian Dreamdirector, Stan Grant offers ‘Australia needs to get past the idea that because you speak up and you speak against the idea of what other people may think Australia is, it doesn't mean that you don't also love your country and want the best for your country’. This echoes Ahmed’s (2017) experience of being a minority, where she shares that you can try to pass by not trying to be ‘that’ kind of minority. That you should not try to make demands because you know they will perceive you as being demanding before you even turn up; because you turn up. Goodes turned up. He was outspoken. He ‘took up space’, and made people feel uncomfortable by reminding us of Australia’s past genocide, the Stolen Generations and the continuing intergenerational trauma experiences by Indigenous Australian.
Baldwin wisely said ‘To accept one’s past – one’s history – is not the same thing as drowning in it; it is learning how to use it. An invented past can never be used; it cracks and crumbles under the pressures of life like clay in a season of drought (Baldwin, 1995, p81, as cited in Rudolph (2018) et.al).’ Thisis our challenge as social justice educators. It is essential our students understand, genocide and all, our colonial history. They must understand the ongoing ramifications of intergenerational slaughter, poverty, incarceration, health and vocational discrimination and disadvantage. Further, our students need to appreciate, celebrate and actively engage in our rich national history. With over 65, 000 years of continuous habitation, cultural richness, language groups and connection to country, students have many and varied ways to engage and learn from and with our Indigenous peoples. We want them to accept, not drown. We want them to learn how to use this knowledge. We want our students to act. ‘We need to deal with what Aboriginal people call the 'unfinished business of Australia', what is left over from our settlement. We are the only Commonwealth country not to have a treaty with our first peoples. The only one’ (Grant, 2019 as cited in The Age). We need to work alongside our students to fight for constitutional recognition, to close the gap and works towards genuine reconciliation.

I want to take a moment to bring attention to a magazine that brought so much attention to my eyes. Started in 1994, Satya was a voice of hope and investigative journalism into all things plant / environment / animal & beyond. The back issues are online free for you to read. The writers shaped my growth as a vegan & educator on diverse topics traditional media ignored completely. I have always been grateful for the knowledge I accumulated from their publication. I was able to meet some of them last year at the Animal Rights Conference. I remember being totally devastated when they decided to shut down. You can read the entire backlog of issues online for free.
Here are some of my favorite articles & issues;
The Fabric Of Our Lives: Uzbek Cotton production - This November 2006 issue contains many compelling and eye opening articles on cotton production.
Violence and Activism issue March 2004: Walking the Talk to a Compassionate World.
Those of us working to prevent animal cruelty and exploitation currently face an impossible reality. Ethically, we cannot accept the widespread torture being perpetrated every day, every second, by humans against nonhumans. Ethically, we must stop this cruelty right now, but sadly, despite our best efforts animal abuse continues. Thus, we are forced to tolerate cruelty that is intolerable. Animal rights advocates face a painful dilemma that can tempt us to engage in desperate, sometimes violent, retaliation. But retaliation usually invites more retaliation, which perpetuates violence and misunderstanding. This approach has been rampant for thousands of years among human “civilizations,” and it has wrought intense suffering for humans and nonhumans alike. Those of us seeking to create a more compassionate society must distinguish our behavior from that which has caused, and continues to cause, so much pain.
Dec/Jan 2002/3 Issue: The New Face of Slavery
It surprises people that there’s actually a very large number of slaves in the world today—our best estimate is 27 million. And that is defining a slave in a very narrow way; we’re not talking about sweatshop workers or people who are just poor, we’re talking about people who are controlled by violence, who cannot walk away, who are being held against their will, who are being paid nothing. It’s the same definition that would clearly define a slave in Alabama in 1850 or in ancient Egypt, so we’re talking about real slavery. Still, what surprises people is that there could be 27 million people like that.
Feb 2000: Some ways to face an alienating world
1) Cook a great vegan meal and invite friends over. The outer world is often one of suffering, exploitation, and thoughtlessness. As an activist, I challenge it. As an individual, it alarms me. As a vegan, I know that with each meal I boycott that world, and create a sanctuary that supports my sense that the world can be otherwise—loving, thoughtful and nonviolent. When cooking your vegan meals, don’t listen to the news, but relax into cooking. Handle the eggplants and zucchini and marvel again at the abundance of the natural world. Anchor yourself here. If you don’t cook, consider learning. Or, if you know you do not want to cook, celebrate through a great vegan take-out meal. Good vegan meals are infectious! Vegan food is both the medium and the message.
A brave different world exists in these back issues of Satya. Please take a moment out of your life and read through them and see how what is old can be new again & how we have been fighting these same battles, which are mostly information wars to blind the public to what is really going on.
The published an anniversary issue last year called “The Long View” & every vegan advocate needs to learn from the knowledge and experience of these wonderful advocates for veganism and beyond. Wayne Hsiung, one of the contributors was a speaker at our Los Angeles VegFest.
Bookmark this back issue page; http://www.satyamag.com/backissues.html & build it into your life a little bit every week. Something this profound is rare in the world & I only wish Social Media existed when these great activists where sharing these truths.

Counter-terror police investigate 'punish a Muslim' day letters
Counter-terrorism police in the UK are investigating a possible hate crime after several people received letters calling on them to attack Muslims on April 3, termed in the leaflet as "punish a Muslim" day.
Several Britons in London, the West Midlands and Yorkshire said they received the printed letter through the post, according to reports.
Some uploaded images of the communication on social media.
The leaflet says: "They have hurt you, they have made your loved ones suffer. They have caused you pain and heartache. What are you going to about it?"
It goes on to offer rewards for attackers, from 10 points for verbally abusing a Muslim and 50 points for throwing acid in the face of a Muslim, to 1,000 points for bombing a mosque and 2,500 points to "nuke Mecca".
There are more than 2.5 million Muslims in Britain, where Islam is the second largest religion.
On Saturday, West Yorkshire police joined London's Metropolitan Police in attempting to "catch the person or persons responsible for this".
"Public safety remains our priority and I would urge our communities to be vigilant but not frightened," West Yorkshire police said in a statement. "We are stronger when we stand together as one and will not be divided."
Tell MAMA, an organisation monitoring anti-Muslim hate crime, said it was working with police.
"[The matter] is being treated with the utmost seriousness," the organisation said.
"It is essential that all letters and envelopes are kept and handled minimally to preserve evidence for the police to investigate," the monitor said, advising recipients.
'Reflective of hate against Muslims'
British Muslims, faith leaders, politicians and civil rights groups have expressed fear and outrage at the development.
"This vile letter campaign sent to Muslims across the UK has caused deep distress and alarm. We welcome the action being taken by the police to investigate this matter," Miqdaad Versi, assistant secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain, one of the UK's largest Muslim umbrella organisations, told Al Jazeera.
"Sadly it is reflective of hate against Muslims which continues to manifest itself alongside the rise of the far right. Our elected officials need to stand up and take action against Islamophobia in the same way they have taken action to counter bigotry against other groups," Versi added.
Yasmin Qureshi, Labour Party politician and a practising barrister, said: "I'm shocked to learn that extremist cowards are distributing anonymous letters encouraging people to attack Muslims."
Jess Phillips, Labour Party MP for Birmingham Yardley, said: "This is utterly unbelievable, if any of my constituents have received them please get in touch."
"Understandably, this is very distressful not only those who have received the letter but also for the wider communities," said Naz Shah, MP for Bradford West in West Yorkshire.
The head of counter-terror policing in the northeast of England, Russ Foster, "has provided reassurance that a thorough and professional investigation is well under way and urges any further victims receiving any such communication to report the matter to the police", Shah said.
The Church of England's head of interfaith relations, Andrew Smith, tweeted: "Angry to hear about appalling 'punish a Muslim' letters that have been sent. Can't imagine how horrible & frightening it must be to get a letter like that. Time to redouble our efforts to build peace in our society & support those feeling scared or intimidated. The work goes on."

Elm: A Critique
I must admit, when I first started the Programming languages class at the beginning of the year, I wasn’t prepared for how different things were going to be. I expected them to be somewhat different, of course, but I just wasn’t expecting them to be that different, you feel?
Anyway, what I’m trying to say is, this introduction to functional programming was nothing if not enlightening. Even if I wasn’t able to have a perfect understanding of Elm, Scala, or Scheme, as I might’ve hoped, I still feel like I learned quite a bit, especially how it relates to programming in Java, or Python, as well as the general understand of computer logic and systems.
My experience with Elm was… rocky, to say the least. I did not, as I had hoped, manage to create something fluent and workable. My hope, originally, was to make an interactive map of Japan during the Sengoku Jidai. You would one of two buttons at the top of a page, and it would change the year on the map, which would update the map year-by-year, and have pieces that you could click or hover over and get more information: battles, significant events, etc.
Sadly, this had to be scrapped for a few reasons, the primary of which was that the bulk of the work was with the HTML, which I had next to no experience with. Basically, this project would have been mostly Text and next to no code, which, I felt, defied both the spirit and the intent of the project. So, I scrapped that idea in favor of what I eventually came up with.
I have always enjoyed ‘roguelike’ games. Nethack, Faster-than-Light, Stone Soup, Tales of Maj-Eyal, and the Adventure Mode of Dwarf Fortress have always been particularly fun to me. The sense of discovery and curiosity at exploring new rooms or locations or planets never gets old, and the difficulty curve keeps me coming back. I’ve never actually ‘won’ a roguelike, for all my love of them, and yet I can’t stay away.
Similarly, I had just watched Moana in theatres. It’s a good movie. Check it out.
My hope, then, had been to come up with a game that modeled games like Nethack and Rogue, with a Polynesian-Explorers bent. I had some difficulties, and, ultimately, wasn’t able to conjure up what I had imagined, but I hope to use my experiences with trying to critique my experience with Elm, both the things I liked and didn’t like.
So, first things first. Number Generation. My program, originally, used a list of lists to create something approximating a 50x50 grid. There would be 50 lists, and each would be a part of another list, so that there were effectively 50 lines. Each list would contain 50 elements. My plan was to have it so that each element was a randomly generated number between 1 and 75. Every time the element in a list was equal to 75, it would be an ‘island’, and every other tile would be ‘water’. There were several problems with this, some of it having to do with my own inexperience with Elm, and some having to do with the actual architecture of Elm.
Random number generation, in Elm, is quite unlike number generation in most other languages. Take Java, for example. While in both cases, you need to import a ‘Random’ library, in Java, the generator is much easier to use. You just import Random, and you can use the functions to generate random integers. In Elm, however, to create random numbers, you first need to create a generator, and then use the generator to generate random numbers, rather than just calling functions. While this is by no means bad design (in fact, it works perfectly fine), I felt myself struggling to create random numbers because of how I was so used to using random number generators that it felt strange to try something different. I suppose that’s the danger of using the same-old methods of programming though, and not any sort of fault with the actual language.
Speaking of lists, I found, far too late, that I couldn’t actually just ‘create’ new lists within the code itself. I have no idea where I got the idea that I could, since I haven’t been able to literally ever, but most of my programming ended up suffering for it. The way my programming worked, I would have created a list that had, as its contents, literally one list that was 2500 elements long. This, obviously, would have been particularly useless, as I was trying to create a list of 50 lists, each with 50 elements. I realize now that, instead of using lists I should have used arrays, though that, as I’ve discovered, creates its own problems.
As I’ve found, there is no simple way to create a two-dimensional way of storing information in Elm. At least, not one that I’ve found. Even when trying to use arrays, I discovered that it wasn’t easy to create an array of arrays. As near as I can tell, the only way to create a two-dimensional array is to create the number of rows that you want in the actual code itself as individual arrays, give them their elements, and then prepend them all to another array. While perhaps I should’ve been more willing to artificially pad my program with seemingly unnecessary lines, I felt both that it was in violation of the spirit of the assignment, and that, hopefully, I could come up with something far more efficient than creating 50 different arrays with the actual code architecture. Creating two-dimensional arrays is far easier in Java than in Elm, and while I feel Elm did a great many things right, I wish there was some functionality that made it easier and more efficient. If there is, please let me know. I found next to nothing.
One last things about lists, though I suppose it’s much more generally about Elm as a language. I really don’t know how I feel about the Maybe functionality. Intellectually, I think, I understand exactly why it can be useful to have a functionality that makes it impossible to not come up with anything. In my example, I discovered that I could not return ‘nothing’ in a list when using the List.head and List.tail functions. I certainly don’t think that it’s bad to have something like that: Elm is designed that, at least theoretically, it shouldn’t ever crash. Thus, it makes sense that you would need the maybe functionality to achieve that. However, on a more visceral level, I felt frustrated trying to work around the Maybe functionality, since it was far too difficult (for me, anway), to try and create a recursive functionality that searched through lists for certain elements. Again, I accept that this is far more a charge against myself and my familiarity with Java and Python than it is a condemnation or critique of Elm.
Thus, for all my complaining, I should point out that there are more than a few things that Elm gets right. Or, at least, does well enough that all previous complaints are basically meaningless in comparison. While I, personally, prefer, and will probably continue to prefer, object-based languages, I feel that Elm, and functional programming in general, has quite a bit to offer. Obviously, there’s the functionality of it (it’s literally in the name), but more than that, I honestly felt that it was so much easier to predict the outcome and operation of a program while working in Elm, Scheme, and so on. I felt like, on those rare occasions where I got something working, there was far less of a chance of some unforeseen nonsense to come out and ruin everything for me, which was particularly nice. The language felt ‘safer’ than languages like Java, and, even though I had some small personal issues regarding very specific aspects of programming, I felt as though the infrastructure of Elm which much more sturdy and grounded. In java, you could think your program was running fine until some small, unforeseen bug appeared and suddenly you realized that the whole thing is borked, and you need to change, like a million lines or whatever because your whole infrastructure was built around that one thing that you didn’t even realize didn’t work. In Elm, that almost never happens. In Elm, you no almost immediately when something is borked. That doesn’t always make it easier, but you’ll know that there’s a probable error about to pop up as soon as you try to compile the code, since Elm is incredibly good at telling you about the possible and likely errors to result, and simply won’t let you compile the code without it. While I mentioned that I had problems with the Maybe functionality, I do understand its necessity, especially with regards to ensure the ‘safety’ of the program.
All in all, Elm is an excellent, well-designed language that has something of a learning curve. It’s safe, fast, and reliable, and allows for quite a bit of flexibility with regards to programming and design. While I probably wouldn’t recommend Elm as a first language to someone, I think it stands as an excellent example of a good introduction to functional programming, and the way it works with and responds to HTML is exceptional. If you can get over the learning curve, there is so much that can be done with Elm, and even if that doesn’t interest you, give it a look if you’re interested in functional programming. It’s an excellent introduction, and a good starting-point to discovering the finer points of it.
All in all, 8.5 /10, too much water.

Federal Judges are Failing Incarcerated People During the Pandemic
I am tired of members of my profession dismissing my clients’ humanity. Sadly, it happens a lot: “Your clients are probably lying to you, which is unsurprising,” reads an email from a representative of the Texas State government. “People get better medical care in jail,” claim people who have never been incarcerated a day in their lives as reason to keep people locked up during this pandemic. “We can’t trust inmates to follow the law, so how could we trust them to quarantine from others if they were released?” asks a judge who swore an oath to protect the fundamental rights of these “inmates.” It should not be news to anyone that the scales of justice are tipped in favor of the powerful, but it’s never been starker to me than now. I’ve spent the last six months on the frontlines of the legal battle to protect incarcerated people from preventable illness and death as jails and prisons fumbled their response to the COVID-19 crisis. What I’ve seen is a chasm between the courage and humanity of my clients — people discarded in crowded facilities trying against all odds to follow public health guidelines — and the officials who incarcerate them: bureaucrats ever ready to point the finger elsewhere as they deny incarcerated people adequate food, water, PPE, cleaning supplies, testin, the ability to socially distance, and subject COVID-positive patients to pepper spray. More than 1,000 incarcerated people have died from confirmed cases of COVID-19, and 88 of the top 100 largest outbreaks in the country are in jails and prisons. Even this paints an incomplete picture: Around the country, we’re seeing facilities refuse to provide COVID-19 testing to incarcerated people to keep reported numbers artificially low. In Arizona, officials reportedly went so far as to order incarcerated people to refuse COVID-19 tests or else face a “beat-down.” Other jurisdictions, including in Texas and California, simply ignore COVID-19 case counts in prisons in order to increase their chances of reopening. And when we sue to hold these legal system actors accountable, it increasingly becomes obvious: They are lying to maintain the status quo, despite the risk it poses to our clients. The philosophy behind our legal system is that adversaries — usually lawyers — present evidence to a judge or jury, engage in vigorous advocacy, and the truth should win out. Even in ordinary times, this is a myth for most people accused of crimes: Public defenders are given vastly fewer resources than law enforcement and prosecutors, and the overwhelming majority of criminal cases are resolved by plea bargaining instead of trial (often to avoid the additional prison time that comes with exercising trial rights). When people do demand their day in court, decades of “tough on crime” rhetoric have manifested in juries and judges who view arrested people — particularly Black and Brown people — as presumptively guilty instead of innocent. Unfortunately, in the COVID-19 context, judges continue to favor the demonstrably untrue accounts of jail officials over those of incarcerated people who testify at great personal risk. For example, in Memphis, Tennessee, the chief jailer testified under oath that the jail was following a policy of not returning a COVID-positive person to the general population until they had twice tested negative for COVID-19. He even said that failure to do so would create a high risk of transmission. However, his staff and colleagues had never implemented this testing policy and routinely moved COVID patients back into the general population without testing. Government officials routinely employ this strategy of plausible deniability: Supervisors who brush aside evidence of daily practices testify that all is well, while the reality is bleak for incarcerated people, as well as prison and jail staff. The temerity knows virtually no bounds: As incarcerated people suffer severe illness and die, jurisdictions like Miami and Orange County filed legal appeals to save themselves from the grave injury of having to provide detainees with soap. Yet, the officials who I feel the most betrayed by this year are our federal judges. Federal judges are uniquely entrusted to protect the constitutional rights of all. Their lifetime appointments are meant to ensure their total independence and ability to fairly protect the rights of even those without political or social influence. The federal judiciary — at least in principle — is our government’s best hope to protect the rights of the systemically oppressed. Many recent legal rulings on important matters of public health have fallen short. Many trial courts have cherry-picked evidence or misapplied the law to rule against incarcerated people. And when trial courts find that our clients’ rights were violated, courts of appeals ignore the record and go out of their way to reverse course — most notably when the Supreme Court recently paused a court order requiring increased protections in the Orange County Jail without offering any explanation, and despite rising COVID infections and dishonesty by jail officials (called out as “bad behavior” by Justice Sotomayor in her dissent). While profoundly disappointing, these pro-incarceration instincts track the composition of the federal bench. Seven times more federal judges are former governments lawyers (prosecutors and civil attorneys) than lawyers who brought challenges to government action; 80 percent of federal judges are white — despite the vast racial disparities the criminal legal system perpetuates — and 73 percent are men, despite the fact that women have been the fastest growing population in prisons and jails for decades. Judicial nominees from presidents of both parties have overwhelmingly been former prosecutors and corporate attorneys: 85 percent of President Obama’s nominees had one of those backgrounds. Representation and fair adjudication of cases have always mattered. This year, a lack of judges who understand the true horrors of our incarceration machine meant that incarceration has been a death sentence for far too many people. The United States’ unique obsession with mass incarceration also means that the pandemic is harder to mitigate here than in other countries without these super-spreader sites. The next President has a moral and institutional obligation to appoint judges who will counterbalance this bias against people who have been accused or convicted of crimes by appointing judges who are civil rights advocates and criminal defense attorneys, not just private corporate attorneys and prosecutors. Given how overwhelmingly lopsided our current judiciary is, the next President should aggressively appoint judges with underrepresented backgrounds to help restore our judiciary’s independence and our national trust in our courts. I am tired of the disdain members of my own profession exhibit toward my clients. However, some of this comes with the territory of combatting our national obsession with incarceration. What should not be expected, or tolerated, is the absence of a fair and impartial judiciary who will tip the scales of justice back into balance.

SEO Traps That Will Decrease Your Ranking
10 SEO myths that will limit your google ranks in 2020
It is no secret how important SEO is for digital content. Well written and produced content that incorporates the principles of SEO can make the difference between your website or social media page enjoying a high amount of traffic, and falling to the bottom of the list of search engine rankings. Below is a list of the most common mistakes to avoid when creating and producing SEO content.
SEO myths 2020
Utilizing the wrong keywords: Search engines, as well as users, prefer long-tail keywords. The way in which you define and view your products and services is far less important than the way your customers define them. From time to time, the terms you use when referring to your products might be different than those commonly used by customers. Do your research, and understand your audience. There are numerous tools, such as Google Ad Words, Google Trends, and Moz Keyword Explorer available to assist you.
Overuse of keywords: This one should go without saying, but I will say it anyway. Keyword usage, while extremely important, MUST be organic. The overuse of keywords will absolutely not help your content rank higher. In fact, it will result in the opposite. And plus, most search engines will immediately recognize this practice, and your content will actually be penalized in ranking points.
Using inconsistent or illogical links: Quality, natural links are a huge part of your content's search engine ranking. It has become a baseline assumption that your content will include links of this nature. However, packing your content full of links that don’t make sense with what the content is about will also cause your rankings to suffer.
SEO misconceptions
Not optimizing your content for mobile use: Almost 90% of consumers digest digital content via their smartphones. Let that sink in. If you are not optimizing your content for mobile use, you’re only getting your message out to 10% of digital consumers.
4XX errors: This means that a link is broken somewhere, and therefore cannot be reached. You may also see one of these errors if something is externally blocking the page.
Not using or under-utilizing meta descriptions: Meta descriptions are how Google determines the relevance of content with regards to an internet search. If you skip this step or do a poor job creating it, search engines will not know how to classify the content.
The creation of duplicate content: Site audit tools are used frequently by search engines, and they will flag duplicated content. Not only will this result in lower rankings, but you could also find your content removed.
URLs that contain underscores: Search engines can have a very difficult time with underscores. When using underscores, you run the risk of search engines incorrectly documenting your site indexes. Using hyphens can prevent this from happening because search engines are able to much more easily identify them.
Using title tags of incorrect length: Title tags which are too long (tags consisting of more than 60 characters) are cut short in the SERPs. And those title tags that are significantly less than 60 characters run the risk of being missed by search engines altogether.
Low Word Counts: Search engines love long content. If your work is too short, search engines will simply assume that it is very light on content, and rank it accordingly. Don’t add meaningless words just to increase the length of your content, but make sure you are thorough and informative.
Slow HTML load speed: The average person will click off of a website if it takes longer than ten seconds to load. Speed will also have a significant impact on your search engine rankings. Having poor load speed implies that your website is outdated, and poorly maintained.
Not making use of analytics: It is important that you continually monitor your content to see what is working, and what is not. Poorly ranking content is doing you a disservice, but failing to make it better is inexcusable. Search engine analytic tools make it very easy to track your rankings and traffic generation.
Failing to optimize your content for local searches: If you happen to run a national chain of home goods stores, this one is of the utmost importance. While it makes sense to advertise snow shovels to Buffalo in February, it would be a bit silly to use the same marketing campaign in Phoenix.
Failing to use anchor texts: Using generic “click here” texts for links is just about the laziest way to sabotage your digital content. Search engines consider it to be poorly produced, and rightfully so. (It is poorly produced.) And readers question if you believe in what you are posting.
Publishing content that is poorly written: This is another one that should not have to be said. But sadly, it is still a very common occurrence. If your digital content is poorly written or produced, it will be treated as such by both search engines and any consumers who happen to stumble across it on the fourteenth page of their Google search results.
Creating content that is not “link-worthy”: This goes hand in hand with publishing poorly written content. When other articles link themselves to your post, it helps both of you. They piggyback off of your established credibility, and you become viewed as the “expert.” The benefits here are fairly obvious. So, therefore, if your content stinks, no one is going to want to link themselves to it.
Not using creative design elements: While written content will always be king to search engines, consumers do have a strong appreciation for attractive visual elements. Adding quality visuals to your digital content all but guarantees additional eyes will find there a way to your website. However, not incorporating these elements will leave you missing out on a considerable amount of potential web traffic.

Delhi Police, tempo driver road battle turns political; BJP sad with Akali Dal MLA's outburst in opposition to Centre, cops
http://tinyurl.com/y5zx33vd A day after video clips of a gaggle of policemen thrashing a Gramin Sewa (passenger tempo service service) driver who had pulled out a kirpaan and attacked them went viral on social media, the Delhi Police registered cross FIRs in opposition to the driving force and the policemen concerned within the incident. A Sikh tempo driver was crushed up in Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar by some policemen. Information18 Until now, three policemen have been suspended within the case. A bunch of protesters who had gathered outdoors the Mukherjee Nagar Police Station on Sunday night allegedly attacked Assistant Commissioner of Police KG Tyagi. Jaspreet Matta, who’s the co-convener of BJP Delhi’s Sikh Cell and occurs to be a resident of Mukherjee Nagar, says the scenario was underneath management inside an hour. “I don’t perceive the necessity to politicise the incident within the title of faith. I, together with RP Singh (convener of the Sikh Cell) had gone and met MoS for House Affairs G Krishna Reddy who gave clear orders to the ACP to take cost of the scenario,” stated Matta, including that DCP Vijayanta Goyal Arya conversed with them in Punjabi and repeatedly assured them that she’s going to take speedy motion. Matta questioned Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh’s shut aide Baljit Singh Daduwal’s involvement in protests in opposition to the police. “When the Sikh Cell and native leaders are making certain justice is delivered then why are leaders and representatives from different states leaping in to escalate the matter, which is able to solely incite communal tensions?” stated Matta. Amongst those that criticised the police additionally embrace Manjinder Sirsa, Shiromani Akali Dal MLA from Rajouri Backyard. Sources inside Delhi BJP revealed that the get together’s Delhi unit is not sad on the manner Sirsa lashed out on the police and the central authorities with out understanding the motive behind the violence. कौन सा क़ानून पुलिस को यह हक़ देता है कि वो किसी भी बेगुनाह इंसान पर बिना उसकी बात सुनें लठ्ठ से पिटाई करे??टैंपो ड्राइवर ने कृपान अपने बचाव में निकाली थीपुलिस अगर गुंडों की तरह हरकतें करेगी तो आम जनता कितनी देर तक चुप बैठेगी !!!@DelhiPolice @CPDelhi @ANI @republic @htTweets pic.twitter.com/ZBR00NQDgJ — Manjinder S Sirsa (@mssirsa) June 17, 2019 The supply, who wished to stay nameless, stated that the saffron get together, out of its respect for Parkash Singh Badal has been tolerating junior Akali ministers who’re fast to radicalise Sikh voters. Locals blame congestion, inflow of outstation college students Nonetheless, locals declare that petty violence over transport is commonplace within the Mukherjee Nagar the place the incident befell, lamenting that as an alternative of seeing it as a civic and transport downside, the incident has been changed into a communal concern. “The incident didn’t occur as a result of the motive was to assault a Sikh. Violence was the results of the municipal mess that’s Mukherjee Nagar. The congested streets are unable to bear the brunt of autos and Gramin Sewa tempos,” stated Alok, a store keeper and resident from this North Delhi neighbourhood. Through the years, Mukherjee Nagar had advanced right into a hub for civil service aspirants finding out at Delhi College. The realm is adjoining to the College’s North Campus. In the present day, the world additionally has a big inhabitants of IIT-JEE and police forces aspirants. The inflow of scholars has added to not simply inhabitants within the space but additionally elevated strain on native transport. Mukherjee Nagar is a congested scholar hub close to North Campus whose public transport is burdened by inflow of migrants. Picture credit score: Pallavi Rebbapragada There are two stretches on which Gramin Sewas and autos run — Burari to GTB Nagar and Gandhi Vihar to Haqeeqat Nagar Pink Mild. Sometimes, a Gramin Sewa is meant to be a less expensive mode of transport (Rs 10) than an auto rickshaw (Rs 50) and might load as much as six passengers. Given the heavy circulation of passengers on these routes, the autos load as much as 10 folks, generally much more by bribing the site visitors police on patrolling obligation. “The scholars want Gramin Sewa service as a result of the fare is much less however since these autos want a minimal variety of passengers, they load up extra passengers to have the ability to maintain themselves. Poor folks drive Gramin Sewa tempos. This can be a matter of survival for them,” stated Vijay, a civil service aspirant from Bihar. Lately, the Delhi Authorities has introduced its plan to hike the Gramin Sewa fares, which have been final revised 10 years in the past. A delegation of Gramin Sewa tempo drivers had met Arvind Kejriwal and apprised him of the scenario whereby route constraints are put to limit the motion of this comparatively cheaper mode of transport. “Petty violence over transport is commonplace right here. It has been given a communal angle this time however which authorities is doing something to deal with the on a regular basis disaster that has led to the violence within the first place?” requested Ashok Dhawan, a neighborhood resident. Pointing at a protracted queue of Gramin Sewa tempos and auto rickshaws parked outdoors the Mukherjee Nagar Metro Station Quantity 2, one other resident Sanjay Talwar alleged that the police takes “hafta (a weekly bribe)” for these autos to have the ability to park alongside the tiny roads. Including to the site visitors woes, there are 4 bus depots within the space — one DTC bus depot, one Haryana Roadways bus depot and two cluster bus depots. Owing to the congestion, the DTC bus route was diverted away from the world. “Mukherjee Nagar is a municipal mess and it isn’t in a position to bear the brunt of migration. Sadly, it’s faith that’s being highlighted and never the circumstances that led to the violence,” rued Talwar. Poor policing fuelled rage, claims resident A neighborhood reisdent who claimed to be an eye-witness shared with Firstpost an image of the cracked head of the police official who was crushed up by the Sikh man together with the video of the police station from that evening. The Gramin Sewa tempo passenger carriers that cost Rs 10 for a experience load extra passengers and provide ‘hafta’ or weekly fines to the police to permit them to take action. Pallavi Rebbapragada Claiming to have been the one who dialed ‘100’ at round 6.42 pm on 16 June, he shared that the police made a mistake by guarding their very own personnel as an alternative of quelling the fashion. “On this case, the sufferer wasn’t unarmed and this case is way extra difficult as a result of the police can defend themselves by saying they attacked in self-defense,” he stated. When an incident is lent a spiritual spin, it performs with the feelings of a neighborhood. Some members of the Sikh neighborhood confirmed up in help of the victims from West Delhi’s Rajouri Backyard (from the place Sirsa is the sitting MLA). Amongst them was Ranjit Singh, a shopkeeper from Bhogal in South Delhi who was reportedly brutally attacked by unidentified males in 2014 (in the identical space). He claims that although he complained, the police didn’t provide him any reduction and alleged that DCP South East Delhi Mandeep Randhawa even distorted the details of the case. Within the hope that the Sikh neighborhood would increase his trigger aggressively, Singh had even shared proof of him being crushed up by the police. However, quickly, the protesters moved on and he and his spouse have been left screaming on the street, alone. Sikhs protesting different, older cases of police brutality surfaced outdoors Mukherjee Nagar Police Station. Pallavi Rebbapragada With lower than a yr to go for the Delhi Meeting elections, Sikh leaders in Delhi are making an apparent try to realize political capital as an alternative of committing themselves to resolve the problems main as much as such incidents. Two ‘expeditions’ of my own in recent weeks have taken me out of the unbearabe heat of an unusually searing summer sun into the cool, air-conditioned enclaves of, first London’s National Portrait Gallery and secondly, Greenwich’s National Maritime Museum.
The Portraits
In the Victorian Gallery of the Portrait Gallery, among many representations of influential men and women of that era, I discovered the following remarkably similar portraits by Stephen Pearce (1819-1904): the one on the left is of Sir Robert McClure R.N. (1807-1873); the one on the right is of Sir Francis Leopold McClintock R.N. (1819-1907).
McClure
McClintock
McClure joined the Royal Navy in 1824, made his first Arctic voyage in 1836-37, and played a prominent role in the search for the lost Franklin expedition of 1845. He was rewarded by Parliament for being the first to traverse the elusive and much sort after North West Passage – albeit he did so partly on foot – in 1854, and survived a Court Martial for abandoning his ships to serve in China and ultimately be promoted to Vice-Admiral in 1873.
McClintock joined the Royal Navy in 1831 and made his first Arctic voyage in 1848, just as concerns for the fate of the 1845 expedition were beginning to be raised. He commanded the 1857-59 expedition that discovered the Victory Point Record, among other relics and artefacts, that eventually proved the loss of Franklin and his entire crew of 129 men. Knighted in 1860, McClintock continued to command Royal Navy voyages until his retirement in 1884.
Also of interest in relation to this project, are these plaster medallions – created by Bernard Smith (1820-1885) – of (on the left) Sir John Richardson R.N. (1787-1865) and (on the right) Sir James Clark Ross R.N. (1800-1862).
Richardson had accompanied Sir John Franklin on two Arctic voyages, in 1819 and 1825, and in 1847 he led the first of the expeditions sent in search of the misssing 1845 expedition. Richardson also wrote a magnificent biographical entry on Franklin for the eighth volume of Encyclopaedia Britannica, published in February 1856, and it was reading this tribute that inspired Charles Dickens to say (in a letter to John Forster, dated March 1856)
I think Richardson’s manly friendship and love of Franklin, one of the noblest things I ever knew in my life. It makes ones heart beat high, with a sort of sacred joy.
(Dickens (vol 8), 1993, p. 66)
Dickens drew on this ‘manly friendship and love’ to develop the characters of Richard Wardour and Frank Aldersley when working with Wilkie Collins on their Arctic drama The Frozen Deep (see Brannon, 1966) and subsequently when creating the character of Sydney Carton in A Tale of Two Cities.
But I digress onto a pet subject! Sir James Clark Ross R.N. – represented by the right-hand medallion above – is credited with discovering Magnetic North in 1831, commanded an expedition to the Antarctic in 1839-43, and led an Arctic expedition in search of Franklin in 1848-49. His uncle, John Ross, was also an Arctic explorer but fell out of favour with the Admiralty after turning-back on an expedition because he had seen a ‘mountain range’ that it later transpired was an hallucination caused by weather conditions.
This portrait of Sir Edwin Landseer also caught my eye, especially as I had just had lunch in Trafalgar Square watching a group of young Italian tourists clambering all over the finished lions. Here they are shown alongside their designer and creator in his workshop. Landseer, of course, was renowned from an early age for his represenations of wildlife and animals, among which is his only Arctic painting ‘Man Proposes, God Disposes’, which I featured in my first blog post in November 2017.
The Songs
At the National Maritime Museum, at an event organised in partnership with another of my favourite institutions The English Folk Dance and Song Society, I discovered a little of the history and lyrics of songs associated with Dr. John Rae, the Orkney-born Arctic explorer and Hudson’s Bay Company Factor who caused outrage in mid-century Victorian England by implying that the men of the lost Franklin expedition may have resorted to cannibalism. He had strong evidence to prove this, and science has more recently confirmed his findings, but he was derided and disbelieved in his own time and denied the honours and recognition that he deserved – again I digress to a favourite pet subject, and shall post more about this I suspect during, and/or following, my visit to Rae’s homeland in October this year.
As for the songs, there was one I was already familiar with as it is still sung regularly in Folk Clubs and at other traditional music sessions around the UK today. Called Lady Franklin’s Lament it has, like most songs that have been passed down through the oral folk tradition, many different versions of varying length. Waltz and Engle, writing in 2015, state that “Broadside versions [of this ballad] probably date from the period 1850-1853”.
The version we learnt at the workshop was entitled Lady Franklin’s Lament for her Husband. Longer than the commonly sung, more recent, versions it was sourced through both the Glasgow and Edinburgh Broadside Ballad Collections by the workshop’s co-ordinator, Orkney folk singer Aimee Leonard. In common with all versions, however, it tells the tale of a sailor dreaming that he’s heard “a female” who “can take no rest” weeping aloud that
Ten thousand pounds would I freely give, To say on earth that my husband do live.
The female is, of course, Franklin’s wife, Jane, who did offer rewards of £2000 and £3000 in March 1848 and March 1849 respectively, but not of as much as £10,000; maybe there is some poetic licence here. Nevertheless, Lady Franklin’s rewards were no doubt an incentive that preyed on the mind of many a poor sailor searching the Arctic seas for the lost expedition, and their exaggeration of the amount – or their conflation of it with larger rewards offered by the Government – is understandable.
The second song, Lament for Francis Crozier, was written in 2001 by Irish singer, mountaineer and polar explorer Frank Nugent whilst sailing near King William Island in a ship called the Northabout. Francis Crozier had met, and fallen in love with, Franklin’s wife’s niece, Sophia Cracroft, when his ships called at Van Diemen’s Land (VDL; renamed Tasmania in 1856) during a voyage to Antarctica in the 1830s. Franklin was then Governer of VDL and entertained the Officers of the ships on which Crozier was serving – coincidentally, these were the same two ships, The Erebus and The Terror, on which Franklin sailed to the Arctic in 1845 with Crozier as his second-in-command. Crozier saw this voyage as his great chance to impress Sophia and thus win her heart, and her hand in marriage. Sadly, as we know, this was not to be, and indeed it is likely that it never could have been. Instead, Crozier was forced to take command of the expedition when Franklin died in 1847 (we know this because of the Victory Point Record I mentioned earlier) and he himself perished, we know not how, along with all the men under his command. As the song concludes:
Oh, what hardship and pain, did your poor seamen suffer … … you starved on the banks of Back’s Great Fish River The [North West] Passage it led you to heaven’s green shore.
Song 3 came from a collection of Songs of the North printed on board HMS Assistance during her 1850-51 expedition in search of Franklin. One of the ways in which crews entertained themselves during long lingering months stuck amid Arctic ice was to put on theatre shows and HMS Assistance was, at this time, home to The Royal Arctic Theatre – just as their compatriots aboard HMS Resolute in 1850-51 were home to the periodical newspaper The Illustrated Arctic News, a parody of London’s Illustrated London News, established in 1842.
Song 3, then, was sung at the closing of The Royal Arctic Theatre on 4th March 1851 by Lieutenant R.D.Aldrich R.N. and it opens with a plea to:
Come cheer up my lads! the season draws near When all wish to strive, nor care where they steer, …
whilst its chorus avows that:
Our hearts are all stout, and our motto shall be, Ready! aye ready! Ready! aye ready! To rescue our comrades from dire misery.
Dire misery indeed! But admirable sentiments with which to reinvigorate cold, hungry men suffering a multitude of minor ailments after a winter stuck in Arctic ice that was now abating and allowing their ships to move on.
Conclusions
These songs and portraits tell us much of the character and spirit of the men who ventured, literally, to the ends of the earth in order to advance geographic and scientific knowledge. They represent in words and pictures the images that their subjects and masters wanted the public to hear and see; images of men who could conquer the bleak wilderness of the Arctic and remain true to the gentlemanly ideals of the British establishment; images a nation’s ability to withstand everything the world could throw at it; images, ultimately, of arrogance and intransigence in the face of all circumstance.

Until we sort it out, Airbnb will bring out the worst in some people
The element of trust that is involved in inviting strangers into your home is much easier to manage when you live there, and visitors behave accordingly. The problems come when the property owner isnt present and cant be contacted by understandably irate neighbours dealing with loud parties or pools of vomit. Loading There are also concerns about the pressure placed on the availability and affordability of long-term rentals. In large cities, property owners are drawn to short-term stays because they can make a higher income, however these higher rates also drive up the price of long-term rents. It also reduces the pool of properties in a market where it is already difficult to find a place to live. In holiday towns, workers in low-paid industries, such as hospitality, can find it almost impossible to find a rental as a result. If you cant house the staff for the cafes and shops, your holiday destination falls apart, eventually. After hearing stories from residents in affected areas such as the Mornington Peninsula, I re-evaluated my own booking habits. I now try to stay in places where the owners actually live there returning it to a human transaction rather than a solely financial one. New York City and several other cities around the world are requiring Airbnb to provide contact lists to local councils for people listing properties. Interestingly, Airbnb sees this as a gross breach of privacy but they dont seem concerned about the privacy of neighbouring tenants who are suffering. Some cities are limiting the number of nights certain properties can be let per year and are allowing body corporates to vote on whether short-term rentals are allowed in their buildings suburban streets should be given the same option too. Governments could limit people to one short-term rental property. Police and councils should have increased rights to step in and close down properties that have track records of bad rentals. It should be a privilege, not a right, to operate. A friend who rents out an investment property through a short-term stay platform had a phone call from police in the lead-up to last years schoolies period. They had apparently been monitoring the area and had discovered that his property was going to be the location for the "party of the year". He was understandably horrified and was counselled to cancel the booking, which he did. Luckily for him he had forewarning. This is not possible for every situation and it is the locals who are left to deal with the fallout from badly behaved guests. Which seems to be the main issue with the whole short-term rental platform and possibly for current society as a whole that some people seem to have lost any form of respect and civility. Instead they think it is acceptable to behave like louts, particularly when on holiday. So now their disgraceful behaviour is going to spoil the entire industry of short-term rentals for everyone else who uses it properly. Like any new technology, short-term rental platforms will reach a peak and then regulations will be brought in to control them better and we will hopefully find a workable new equilibrium. However, sadly, I expect we will continue to meet yobs in all sorts of places (we camped next to a few in the Grampians) until we work out a way to bring back good behaviour as the norm. https://www.watoday.com.au/national/victoria/until-we-sort-it-out-airbnb-will-bring-out-the-worst-in-some-people-20180726-p4zts3.html?ref=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_source=rss_feed

Average Couples See Chores as a Cornerstone, Happy Couples See It as the Gem Stone
There’s nothing quite so frustrating as coming home from work to realize that your house is a mess, dinner needs to be cooked, and there’s a mountain of laundry for you to do. All of us spend time dealing with chores, but this scenario is even more frustrating when you arrive to find that mess and a partner who doesn’t seem to care about it.
Chores may seem trivial, but are a big deal
After faithfulness and sex, sharing household chores is one of the most important components of a successful marriage.[1] Many people hold a perception that a healthy relationship centers around the major milestones. Engagement, marriage, romantic dates, anniversaries, and gift-giving are obvious points of discussion in our relationships. These are big things because they seem to have the greatest impact on our lives with our significant others.
Some may think that it’s better to talk about work, what’s on TV, or what’s happening over the weekend instead of devoting some of the conversation to cleaning the house.
But think about it, about 80% of our lives are made up of chores. Everything–from what you eat to what you wear to how clean your house is–comes down to how proficient we are with our chores.
To put it into perspective, think about how much time you spend doing basic things like feeding yourself. If it takes you an hour to make a meal and you eat three meals every day, you’ll spend three hours on meal prep daily. Over the course of 365 days, that comes out to 1,095 hours, or 45 days in the kitchen.
Even those clothes on your back create a serious time commitment. If you spend an average of an hour per day on washing and ironing, by the end of one year, you will spend 15 days on laundry. Cleaning your house for three hours per week takes 156 hours of your year, which comes out to nearly 7 days.
From these few tasks, we’re spending two months per year on chores. This isn’t even considering other duties such as child care, lawn care, or vehicle upkeep. If couples can’t agree on the chores, that means that they will spend at least two months of their year resenting their significant other for their lack of contributions to the household. Without a plan, the chores can quickly become overwhelming for at least one partner. Whenever there’s an imbalance, the relationship suffers.
Happy couples run a household like a business
Instead of waiting for the dishes to pile up, and allowing the resentment to stack up along with them, couples should enter into a business agreement about chores. The “business” is making a couple’s home run efficiently so that both of them can live happily in it.
Usually when couples don’t talk about the chores, one person ends up doing most of the work. They wind up managing the finances, making repairs, cooking, and cleaning. This is exhausting, and even the best partner is prone to becoming overwhelmed or making mistakes.
When one partner feels under-appreciated, he or she might lose motivation to continue with the business of running the household. This sentiment will ultimately erode the partnership.
A fair distribution of responsibilities will help the business run smoothly. Both partners will feel that their needs are met, and they’ll be happy.
The first step in all of this is shining light on what you both do around the house. Chances are, you and your partner are both contributing to the household, but you don’t even realize it. When you show one another what you’re doing to make the house work, you can use chores to help you play as a team.
As the 5th and final stage of a romantic relationship, playing as a team makes you to unite as a common front. As a unit, you can work to achieve a happy, organized, and loving household. Read more about the 5 stages of love here: There Are 5 Stages Of Love, But Sadly Many Couples Stop At Stage 3
The process of figuring out who should do each chore will differ based on the couple’s needs. Both of you will need to decide on responsibilities at home, and it doesn’t matter whether you are the boss at work or the entry-level worker. You leave your rank at the door and become a business partner with a vested interest in your household as soon as you get home.
Talk about chores, bond with chores
I have a few tips to help couples to establish the ground-rules for the business of keeping up their house.
1. Be clear about what needs to be done and when.
The more specific you are about what needs to be done, who will be doing this, and when it needs to be completed, the better. Each partner needs to talk about their expectations and priorities for the household. In addition to thinking about basic things like the who/what/when of doing the chores, spend some time talking about why it’s important to do these things and how the tasks should be completed.[2]
You both may have different expectations, and this could be a cause for bickering down the road. Prevent problems by talking through chores in detail. Make a list of what needs to be done, and identify which chores are the most loathsome for each partner. You can compromise so that neither of you is stuck doing chores that you can’t stand.
You wouldn’t run a business without discussing the various aspects of it’s day-to-day operation with your partner. When it comes to running your house, you should be just as explicit about what needs to be done.
2. Review and adjust your plans as necessary.
If you were running an actual business, you and your partner would work together to maximize strengths and work around weaknesses. You’d divide labor to get the best results. It’s worthwhile to periodically discuss whether you are accomplishing your tasks in the most efficient way possible. It works the same for chores.
Making a plan is only half the battle. You’ll need to revisit your plan from time to time to make sure that it’s still working. For example, if you partner has to work late on a major project this week, you might agree to temporarily take on more chores to assist.
Checking in with one another prevents frustration. If you can work together to get more work done in an efficient manner, it’s going to make your relationship stronger.
3. Take time to acknowledge effort.
In business, leaders know that acknowledging hard work builds loyalty and mutual respect.[3] Loyalty and mutual respect are powerful components of a healthy romantic relationship as well. So at home, couples should acknowledge each other’s effort too.
Show your appreciation when your partner keeps up his or her half of the bargain. When you express your gratitude over the effort your partner exerts to make your home a nice place, you make them feel appreciated and motivated.
Run the chores or the chores run you
Instead of letting chores get out of hand until one partner grudgingly does them all, come up with a plan. Together, you and your partner can establish expectations that will lead you both to have a more comfortable home, and a more supportive relationship.
Chores may seem like little things, but they have so much influence that we ought to consider them big things. Work as a team to figure out how you will clear these tasks from your schedule in an efficient manner. You’ll have more time together, and you’ll appreciate one another more if you treat your household like a well-run business.

Who wants (will listen) to a slightly bruised Pellagra Prophet AKA as Celiac Today?
Part 1 This was getting long so I broke it into two posts but both are still kinda long
Who wants (will listen) to a slightly bruised Pellagra Prophet AKA Celiac Disease today?
(I speak as a man)
I have taken a break from my Tumblr blog for a while because I have blogging/commenting on Celiac.com lately . . .. but I find I am often not wanted or my opinions anyway are looked on as suspect.
One commenter said it was dangerous to recommend a Vitamin for their health.
Quoting
“its not just those specific examples its the bigger picture no one is saying that Vitamin B3 is not important or that B3 deficiency doesn't exist.
The point is you may think that you are helping people but in reality you are giving people dangerous advice based on inaccurate information you have quoted from unreliable / questionable sources. then trying to present this information to us as facts by writing in an somewhat academic style when you clearly havn't even fully researched what you are repeating or who these crazy doctors making these claims are.
im not trying to be mean but it reads like you want to believe Niacinamide can magically cure celiac disease so much that you have convinced yourself its true.
taking high does of vitamin B3 can be toxic and cause serious side effects like liver damage or stomach ulcers.
your blog is on tumblr which is primarily used by teenagers, what if someone sees your posts (who isn't as informed as the people on this forum) and starts taking high doses of Niacinamide for celiac, DH, or acid reflux and gets seriously ill. you probably wouldn't ever find out about it or be held accountable.”
Note this is after I had quoted (unknowingly) a doctor who was being reviewed by their medical board (not in the US) for giving too much credit to Vitamins for their ability to heal/help our health issues.
This is known as quackery in the medical field or at least they would like you to think a Vitamin can’t help you.
But they have a rebellion in their ranks. Functional Medicine doctor’s first rely on Vitamins to restore your bodies functions before prescribing medicine when a Vitamin would do as well.
She might be considered (this type of doctor) who saw the “emperor” had no clothes if you will -- meaning giving medicines for a life time and more medicine when that medicine doesn’t work as failing her patients.
She got in trouble in part because she gave too much credit in (their minds of other doctor’s) who were prescribing the same medicines she had rejected or at least called in to question their effectiveness.
So it is no wonder they attacked her out of fear others too would stop using their medicines that would only lead to more medicines to mask the other/more symptom’s that would continue to develop because the underlying cause had not been identified – often a Vitamin.
Now I know there is a lot of confusion about this topic because it has not been seen in the U.S.A. for three quarters of a century (75+ years) but Pellagra THEN and NOW are causing people heartburn and in its advanced stages their life the fourth D of Pellagra.
I had written a book that might could help them . . .. so naturally they don’t want to hear about it (competition) that might unlock/freeze up their profit from medicines.
I don’t know if it (Niacinamide) will help you or not but I know it won’t you help if you don’t try it.
Here is the thread I am talking about if you want to read it for yourself (it is kind of long) so don’t link to it if you don’t want to spend the whole time reading the thread. https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/topic/115445-relief-and-it-isnt-dapsone/?page=2
The dispute came to a head on the 2nd page so I have linked the 2nd page here.
So this prophet (I speak as a man) is not wanted by those who could use this information the most.
Sadly it doesn’t work that way. The people who could be helped most. Celiac’s or Chron’s etc that could be helped by the knowledge that Niacin treats digestive problems
http://www.yourhealthbase.com/database/a124b.htm
See my summary of how it could be Pellagra and the doctors have not figured it out yet in a clinical setting.
Quoting
“I was serology confirmed as a Celiac. It is true I was not "biospy proven" but there are others on this site like Gemini and I think Ironictruth who were only blood test confirmed but we are no less Celiac's. Than those who have had a biopsy proven diagnosis I believe.
we had a gluten antibody response while consuming gluten and our antibodies when down when I/we stopped consuming gluten.
I think Gemini said hers are still slowly coming down.
And why this considered controversial by some . . . the ideal that biopsy is required for a "positive" not false positive indication of celiac disease is beginning to take hold among research and experts in the field.
A noted author and I would say expert Dr. Rodney Ford of New Zealand the author of the "Gluten Syndrome" notes like squirmingitch that he believes celiac is actually a "Neurological disease" just as squirmingitch noted she had "neurologic aspects" and "psychosomatic reactions" and is what Dr. Ford says.
I have had these same reaction of clinical depression I believe tied to my gluten consumption in addition the GI symptom's and most doctor's today don't connect the two diseases in these aspects.
but my "gluten brain fog" got better when I went gluten free but most doctor's won't agree they are connected even to this day.
Dr. Ford summarizes well what he calls the "Unmasking of Celiac" as reported in the Journal of Gluten Sensitivity. Link provided herehttps://www.celiac.com/articles/23853/1/The-Masking-of-Celiac-Do-Not-Ignore-the-Smoking-Gun/Page1.html
Please read the whole article for yourself but my point is the same as his.
quoting dr. ford "What an odd thing to say: “Do not mask the appearance of celiac disease.” Inferring that you keep on eating gluten, despite early signs of celiac disease, until you get enough damage to your intestines that it can be seen under a microscope. I (He) totally disagree with this concept—but this is still a common belief of medical practitioners.
I am actually glad my doctor was educated enough about the topic to diagnose me as a Celiac without a biopsy.
Dr. Ford goes on to say
"Have you ever heard of a doctor “masking” the diagnosis of heart disease by failing to treat high blood pressure or high cholesterol until the patient has a heart attack? Ridiculous! Have you ever heard of a doctor “masking” the diagnosis of depression so that the person is suicidal before given help? Ridiculous!" He says!
He admits it is contentious but I think it is high time we admit serology is enough to diagnose someone as a celiac before a biopsy can prove "well the blood test was right about you having celiac and not NCGI/NCGS phase of the disease where a biopsy proves what the blood test told us" my words.
Then dr. ford goes on to mention 12 different points about why only blood exams are rejected as proven celiac disease in the absence of a biopsy.
I will note two or three points that I think as he terms it is a "smoking gun" for a serology proven diagnosis.
Quoting Dr. ford
* 7) "The “masking” concept originated a few decades ago when biopsy was the only way to diagnose celiac disease;"
According to Dr. Ford but
8) "now, the blood tests for celiac disease (EMA, tTG, DGP) are more accurate than the biopsy, and can turn positive BEFORE there is any histologic evidence of gut damage;"
He capitalizes this fact but we still want people to use an archaic standard when no other method was available to "Prove" a celiac diagnosis.
Dr. Ford goes on to note
* 1) "Celiac disease is a progressive condition—it slowly gets worse the longer you eat gluten;"
* 2)"In the early stages of celiac disease, it cannot be diagnosed by endoscopy biopsy;"
* 3) "The biopsy test is inaccurate and relies on experts to recognize early disease;"
So I think it is high time like my doctor does and more enlightened researchers/practitioner's like Dr. ford and demand serology confirm a celiac diagnosis and stop demanding older more unreliable methods.
He (Dr. Ford) notes summarizing
quoting
"a) a Gluten challenge is detrimental to your health;
"b) A gluten challenge (to create serious bowel damage) can take years, during which time ongoing body damage (brain, skin and bowel) is ongoing;"
Now it should be noted I am not saying this I am just quoting what an expert in the field says about a "biopsy proven" celiac diagnosis.
Though I do agree with it because other dr's like dr. Mark Hyman said as much 5+ years ago in the Huffington Post
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-mark-hyman/gluten-what-you-dont-know_b_379089.html
quoting Dr. Hyman
"Many doctors consider elevated anti-gliadin antibodies in the absence of a positive intestinal biopsy showing damage to be “false positives.” That means the test looks positive but really isn’t significant.
We can no longer say that. Positive is positive and, as with all illness, there is a continuum of disease, from mild gluten sensitivity to full-blown celiac disease "
Quoting Dr. Hyman again for emphasis "If your antibodies are elevated" . . . Positive is Positive
according to Dr. Hyman and now the the noted author who was the first I know of to link neurological aspect i.e, gluten ataxia as a real component of the "gluten syndrome" Dr. Ford says blood serology is better quoting Dr. Ford again and "more accurate than the biopsy, and can turn positive BEFORE there is any histologic evidence of gut damage;"
He Dr. Ford thinks and I agree this day can not come soon enough for the Celiac's still suffering waiting on a "biopsy proven" celiac diagnosis that "Biopsy is not the Gold Standard" and he even dedicates' a page of his practice to educate people of this fact. It is very informative and should be read by anyone who has a positive blood test for celiac disease.
Here is the link
http://drrodneyford.com/extra/documents/236-no-gold-standard.html
IN summary he believes there will be quoting an "Ending of Endoscopy . .. to diagnose Celiac disease"
"Ending of endoscopy
In the next few years, blood tests (particularly the DGP tests) (Dr. Ford says) will take over the endoscopy and we will see the end of the endoscopy to diagnose celiac disease."
I just hope it comes soon before more people have to "ridiculously" endure eating gluten sometimes for years according to what 5+ years ago dr. Hyman concluded a "positive (blood) test is positive" for a Celiac diagnosis.
So please don't say I didn't have celiac disease. I had 30+ years of horrible GI problems from the time I was a very small kid. I developed Celiac disease no to mention the many IBS, constipation, diarrhea issues that go with such a diagnosis including early onset Arthritis in my late 20’s with a formal diagnosis in my early 30s by blood serology. I could not of survived as other on this site have said a "biopsy proven" celiac diagnosis.
I will be glad when other get it. "Positive is Positive".
I actually think I was as Knitty Kitty said on this site "I was/am a Celiac who developed Pellagra" and why I think Niacin helped her the way it did me.
The International Journal of Celiac disease notes this possibility concerning being a Celiac and a Pellagra sufferer Co-Morbid.
See this link http://pubs.sciepub.com/ijcd/3/1/6/
Note what they say about Celiac and Pellagra being Co-Morbid in 58% of Celiac's in paragraph
3. Celiac and Pellagra.
This is because it is not YET well understood that 58 percent of Celiac patients are Co-Morbid with Pellagra and it it might take years for people/doctor's to understand this.
See this link where Dr. Haney's discusses why this is so.
http://blogs.creighton.edu/heaney/2013/11/18/pellagra-and-the-four-ds/
Where quoting Dr. Heaney he correctly states “it is doubtful today that most health professionals would not recognize it (Pellagra) if a case happened to come to their attention” Today!
If you can believe the research in the International Journal of Celiac disease then "Pathology presumably would qualify the Pellagra patient as a Celiac Patient if the Pellgarin was first diagnosed as a Celiac first as often is the case TODAY!” in the majority of Celiac's quoting the Celiac Posterboy.
And why I keep trying to educate people of this fact before more people sufferer unnecessarily.
*** Remember as always this is not medical advice and should not be considered such. Always consult your doctor before making any changes to your medical regimen. But mine has taken/uses The Niacinamide Challenge /protocol in his practice and his patients digestive/GI problems are in remission i.e, they burp, their stool sinks and and they go once a day without distress after taking Niacin/Niacinamide 500mg 3/day for 6 months proving at least in the majority of his patients they are also Co-Morbid Pellagrins among his IBS patients at least and according to the International Journal of Celiac disease their is at least 50/50 chance a Celiac or/and I believe a Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (NCGS) patient might be too or as cyclyinglady terms it talking about me Non-Celiac Gluten Intolerant - NCGI.
Your results might vary.
2 Timothy 2: 7 “Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things” this included.
Posterboy by the Grace of God,
I was posting (trying to help) someone who has DH and telling them someone else on celiac.com used Niacin to help their intense itching associated with a Celiac diagnosis and after I pointed out in the above referenced thread that Niacin helps dermatitis/skin issues too I was promptly run out of town and told to in their words . . .
“I will make this perfectly clear . . . GO AWAY!” and the thread ends soon after because I went away.
Will you tell me to go away too? Listen if you will Pellagra can and does in most people cases makes more sense.
If you get the correct diagnosis then you get better.
I summarize these things/findings in my post looked beyond celiac to Pellagra linked below.
https://celiacposterboy.wordpress.com/2016/02/16/look-beyond-celiac-to-pellagra-for-your-gi-issuesproblems/
I wrote Celiac Central too now “Beyond Celiac” and they too will not listen or have not heard the Celiac Prophet (I speak as a man) that Gluten Juneteenth has been proclaimed. https://celiacposterboy.wordpress.com/2014/07/16/gluten-juneteenth/
For over two year now and 200+ pages latter on my blog and still I have not convenience one Celiac they could have been diagnosed with Pellagra instead.
Quoting the Celiac Posterboy “Pathology presumably would qualify the Pellagra patient as a Celiac Patient if the Pellgarin was first diagnosed as a Celiac first as often is the case TODAY!”
And their own prophets agree see citation above in quote from celiac.com blog thread http://pubs.sciepub.com/ijcd/3/1/6/
Quoting the International Journal of Celiac Disease
“The two diseases can be connected in two aspects. 58% of pellagra patients were shown to have malabsorption and many had intestinal pathology on biopsies [36, 37]. Alternatively, Pellagra was described in CD [38]
58% percent people that is a MAJORITY!
A majority of the people reading this blog could get better if you have been diagnosed with the wrong disease as I was.
As I said above to celiac.com quoting “This is because it is not YET well understood that 58 percent of Celiac patients are Co-Morbid with Pellagra and it might take years for people/doctor's to understand this.”
Do you have the time to wait?
Some people discredit or question the good news when they hear it.
What have you got to loose (other than your bowels and your mind) it is just a Vitamin.
I do not have a USP (Unique Selling Position). You don’t have to buy my Vitamins.
I don’t sell Vitamins. I did write a book call “How to Fight GERD/Gluten and Win or How the Doctor’s Almost Killed Me” that summarizes this research but you needn’t buy it either.
Almost any blog post I write tells you what you can do and should do if you are experiencing undiagnosed or misdiagnosed Pellagra.
It is now up to you (class/reader) to believe it could help and take the Vitamin or not and continue suffering why the doctor’s keep giving more medicine to hide/mask the symptom’s.
If it is indeed the “Elegant” solution I propose/theorize it is you will get better in 6 months of taking Niacinamide 3/day UNTIL burping and your stool SINKS (where today it still probably floats) and your GI symptom’s go into remission. Or I was wrong. Then tell me and other’s so but I don’t see the point of criticizing what you won’t try?
But the test of a prophet/theory is what does it/they do or say come true! If you take the Niacinamide and you BURP then the Celiac Posterboy prophet has the right disease.
A witness of two is true! Did you begin burping and your stool sink after 3 to 4 months of taking the Niacianmide 3/day THEN it is true you have had Pellagra and the doctors have not diagnosed it correctly.
I don’t know what else to write any more.
I will include the key words for reference and easy search results. The blog comes up better on Bing but use whatever search engine you are most comfortable with.
As I have said before in this blog. A healthy child burps at 6 months of age and you can too in six months by taking the Niacinamide Challenge putting your Co-Morbid Pellagra (digestive) symptom’s into remission if indeed we can believe the International Journal of Celiac Disease and your Celiac Disease is presenting as Pellagra the majority of the time.
In case this is the only post you read I will repeat here for knowledge sakes ****** the number one mistake people make when taking Niacinamide is they don’t take it long enough. It should as I have said elsewhere in this blog it should be taken UNTIL you are burping and I might add burping without bloating. Most people will burp when taking Niacinamide in 4 to 5 months or less taking it 3/daily — ie with each meal.
It takes 3 to 4 months to overcome your dependency on this Vitamin for your mucus membranes (GI lining) to heal itself.
Once repaired you can maintain them barring some future stress/trauma depleting your reserves at which time Heartburn/GERD/IBS symptoms will return and you will lose your burp again.
And the cycle repeats and the Pellagra symptoms come back with a vengeance.
Remember **** This is not medical advice and should not be considered such. Results may vary. Always consult your doctor before making any changes to your regimen.
Then tell someone (share) is all I ask https://celiacposterboy.wordpress.com/2015/12/28/are-you-a-starfish-part-2-of-a-former-sufferers-journey/ tell others is all I ask – however that is (facebook, twitter, comment on my blog, email a friend this link or link this blog to yours, reblog on your site (cite your source) or review my book on Amazon when you are BURPING for the first time in years or (EVER) – tell a friend about this blog or my book is all I ask but don’t let the chain break with you.
Stop the Madness! Once you have the Correct diagnosis you get better!
I say admit it IJCD (International Journal of Celiac Disease (Pellagra my words)) (YOUR own research bares this out but you don’t believe it) (58% of Celiac’s at least) (and probably more) because they are not even looking for Pellagra they just note the Co-Morbidity as an oddity) 58% is not rare it is the (MAJORITY) can and will show improvement when taking Niaciamide UNTIL burping is induced (occurs) like Prousky proved scientifically 15 years ago that “Niacin treats digestive problems” and yet we (most of us Celiacs’) still are looking for a cure for our disease. Maybe as high as 90+ percent (I would say higher) are being misdiagnosed as NCGS/Celiac’s (or some other GI disease) because one disease has been confused for the other.
As always search for the “Celiac Posterboy” or “Celiac Poster boy” or “Fight Gluten Win” or “Fight GERD Win” if you want to read all my blog posts for as I have said elsewhere in this blog and it bears repeating “To Educate is to Free” Truly.
https://celiacposterboy.wordpress.com/2014/09/11/to-educates-is-to-free/ and once free from error tell others there is hope!
Tell your doctor even so he/she can have you tested for a Vitamin deficiency.
https://celiacposterboy.wordpress.com/2016/01/23/to-educate-is-to-free-part-two/
And you think they will listen and want to learn how to help their other patients still suffering.
The Celiac Posterboy (Prophet) by the Grace of God, if what I say is true and you get better and you burp like a baby in six months.
It will take courage and conviction on your part to take a Vitamin when all you hear these days’ that the “average” person doesn’t need a Vitamin. Or put another way why ‘all the hate” for Vitamins? these days” So much so the “average Joe” won’t take a Vitamin for their health?
Do some of the research of I have listed here and if you still feel the same way. I get it. But the power to change (knowledge) is now yours’ the question remains now what will do with it.
If I am right then I will be able to predict your GI future in a way (medically speaking) you will BURP!
When you start burping these other things go away as if by magic.
Either we have found the cure?/remission has occurred or CD/NCGS is the same disease by a different name aka one has been confused for the other Pellagra a Niacin deficiency is being diagnosed today as Celiac disease.
Quoting the Celiac Posterboy ““I hope my words and experience will be enough to convenience you that medical science has discovered the cause of most digestive disorder(s) but medical practice (clinicians/practitioner’s) has not (does not) digested/recognized it (Pellagra) (yet) in a clinical setting.”
And I can hear you now.
So let me verbalize it for you.
“NO that is not possible.” The doctor’s took 5 or 6 years (if you are lucky and not more) diagnosing me. They ruled out Lactose Intolerance, IBS, GERD, UC, Chron’s Disease and Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivty etc.
Long before the vitamin age of the early 20th century. Smart people figured out Citrus fruits protected us from scurvy and why the British Navy were loving called Limey’s.
Several symptoms are as follows:
•Easy bleeding or bruising
• Fatigue • Frequent infections
• Frequent nosebleeds
• Inflamed and bleeding gums
• Painful, swollen joints
• Poor development of tooth enamel
• Slow healing wounds or bruises • Vasomotor instability
Taken together all very complex symptom’s but had ONE single source of disease –
Vitamin C
Let me say it another way the The Scurvy Syndrome had according the medical dictionary “a combination of symptoms resulting from a single cause or so commonly occurring together as to constitute a distinct clinical picture”
But you can’t compare Scurvy to Celiac Disease.
But you can Pellagra a Vitamin deficiency/dependency which the majority of times presents’ as NCGS/Celiac Disease.
That is too Elegant to theorize/propose/diagnose Vitamins’ (more correctly the lack thereof) as the cause of (Celiac) disease/GI/digestive problem’s?
Vitamins are the very definition of ‘elegant’ a nutrient needed in a minimum amount without which we become sick and develop malaise, disease and syndromes (like Pellagra presenting as Celiac Disease and Scurvy develop and Beriberi etc).
The question is why hasn’t the medical community hit upon this simple and elegant solution or more appropriately does no longer support or encourage the use of vitamins in their patient’s as practitioners of medical science seeking a simple (elegant) cause of why the body is not functioning properly.
As I noted above in the quotation from the introduction to my ebook “How to Fight Gluten and Win” The newly developing field of Functional Medicine doctor’s is the practitioner’s most familiar with the science of vitamins/nutrition.
These are doctors whom have questioned maybe all these messes I found my patient’s health in are not answered by drugs but a Vitamin instead.
Is this not TRUE for all Vitamins?
Remember **** This is not medical advice and should not be considered such. Results may vary. Always consult your doctor before making any changes to your regimen.
2 Timothy 2: 7 “Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things” this included.
I wish us all good luck on finding a solution that works for us all.
posterboy,
And I say this to all those who stumble across the Celiac Posterboy blog may God richly bless your health and your journey to truth whatever it might be.
If Pellagra is the true diagnosis then this will help you praise bee to God!
As always search for the “Celiac Posterboy” or “Celiac Poster boy” or “Fight Gluten Win” or “Fight GERD Win” if you want to read all my blog posts for as I have said elsewhere in this blog and it bears repeating “To Educate is to Free” Truly.

Forward of World Refugee Day tomorrow, UN report says 71 million displaced worldwide as a result of conflict, persecution and different violence
http://tinyurl.com/y4kjsnqh Geneva: A report of 71 million folks have been displaced worldwide from conflict, persecution and different violence, the United Nations refugee company stated Wednesday. A rise of greater than two million from final 12 months and an general whole that might quantity to the world’s 20th most populous nation. Representational picture. AP The annual “World Tendencies” report launched by the United Nations Excessive Commissioner for Refugee (UNHCR) counts the variety of the world’s refugees, asylum-seekers and internally displaced folks on the finish of 2018, in some instances following many years of residing away from dwelling. The figures, approaching the eve of World Refugee Day on Thursday, are certain so as to add gas to a debate on the intersection of worldwide regulation, human rights and home politics, particularly the motion in some nations, together with america, in opposition to immigrants and refugees. Launching the report, the excessive commissioner, Filippo Grandi, had a message for US President Donald Trump and different world leaders, calling it “damaging” to depict migrants and refugees as threats to jobs and safety in host nations. Typically, they’re fleeing insecurity and hazard themselves, he stated. The report additionally places a statistical skeleton onto often-poignant particular person tales of individuals struggling to outlive by crossing rivers, deserts, seas, fences and different obstacles, pure and man-made, to flee authorities oppression, gang killings, sexual abuse, militia murders and different such violence at dwelling. UNHCR stated 70.eight million folks had been forcibly displaced on the finish of final 12 months, up from about 68.5 million in 2017 and practically a 65 p.c enhance from a decade in the past. Amongst them, practically three in 5 folks or greater than 41 million folks have been displaced inside their dwelling nations. “The worldwide traits, as soon as once more, sadly, go in what I might say is the flawed course,” Grandi advised reporters in Geneva. “There are new conflicts, new conditions, producing refugees, including themselves to the previous ones. The previous ones by no means get resolved.” The phenomenon is each rising in dimension and length. Some four-fifths of the “displacement conditions” have lasted greater than 5 years. After eight years of conflict in Syria, as an illustration, its folks proceed to make up for the biggest inhabitants of forcibly displaced folks, at some 13 million. Amid runaway inflation and political turmoil at dwelling, Venezuelans for the primary time accounted for the biggest variety of new asylum-seekers in 2018, with greater than 340,000 or a couple of in 5 worldwide final 12 months. Asylum-seekers obtain worldwide safety as they await acceptance or rejection of their requests for refugee standing. UNHCR stated that its figures are “conservative” and that Venezuela masks a doubtlessly longer-term pattern. Some 4 million individuals are identified to have left the South American nation in recent times. A lot of these have traveled freely to Peru, Colombia, and Brazil, however solely about one-eighth have sought formal worldwide safety, and the outflow continues, suggesting the strains on the welcoming nations may worsen. Grandi predicted a continued “exodus” from Venezuela and appealed for donors to offer extra improvement help to the area. “In any other case these nations won’t bear the strain anymore after which they must resort to measures that may harm refugees,” he stated. “We’re in a really harmful scenario.” America, in the meantime, stays the “largest supporter of refugees” on the planet, Grandi stated in an interview. The US is the most important single donor to UNHCR. He additionally credited native communities and advocacy teams in america for serving to refugees and asylum-seekers within the nation. However the refugee company chief famous long-term administrative shortcomings which have given america the world’s largest backlog of asylum claims, at practically 719,000. Greater than a quarter-million claims had been added final 12 months. He additionally decried current rhetoric that has been hostile to migrants and refugees. “In America, similar to in Europe and in different elements of the world, what we’re witnessing is an identification of refugees however not simply refugees, migrants as effectively, with folks that come take away jobs that threaten our safety, our values,” Grandi stated. “And I need to say to the US administration and the president, but additionally to the leaders world wide: That is damaging.” He stated many individuals leaving Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador via Mexico have confronted violence by gangs and suffered from “the shortcoming of those governments to guard their very own residents.” The UNHCR report famous that by far, most refugees are taken in within the creating world, not rich nations. The figures marked the seventh consecutive 12 months wherein the numbers of forcibly displaced have risen. “Yet one more 12 months, one other dreadful report has been overwhelmed,” stated Jon Cerezo of British charity Oxfam. “Behind these figures, folks such as you and me are making harmful journeys that they by no means wished to make, due to threats to their security and most elementary rights.” Your information to the most recent cricket World Cup tales, evaluation, experiences, opinions, dwell updates and scores on https://www.firstpost.com/firstcricket/series/icc-cricket-world-cup-2019.html.
