actually, here’s a second thing i wanted to mention bc the new avengers trailer and how gaunt tony looks in it reminded me.

tony, in the wasteland, is a lot leaner than in canon.  it can’t be helped, really, when you consider the conditions of the wasteland itself.  he does look gaunt to a degree, especially in his face.  his cheeks have hollowed out a bit so the bone structure stands out more sharply.  he’s still fairly healthy, mind, but when you consider that he’s constantly moving, constantly working, and constantly fighting, it’s not that he’s dropped weight so much as the structure of his musculature has changed considerably.  before the war he was a lot more stacked, with thick muscle of a guy who sees a gym often enough to stay in shape but who mostly works in a somewhat sedentary way.  at a computer or a desk or so on.

in the wasteland there’s no option to really do that for long periods of time.  threat literally is imminent.  there’s always someone or something looking to kill you (and sometimes eat you).  the fight for survival is very often literally a fight.  and the quality of things like food is often questionable as hell, and a good bit of the time there won’t be enough of it.  life is kind of shitty in the wasteland, even if you live in a fairly safe settlement, which is part of what drives tony so hard to do as much repairing and improving as he can.  it’s easy to get in a bad place and starve to death.  it’s easy to die from contaminated water (which is why he wants to strangle sheng in diamond city to a degree).  

is he a stick?  hell, no.  he’s prewar, he probably still looks incredibly healthy compared to your born and bred wastelander.  he’s still heavier, especially with the fev enhanced suit.  but his silhouette has considerably changed between prewar and postwar.  someone who knew him before and hasn’t seen him since would definitely notice a difference.  

and also part of his appearance is because he’s a literal functional alcoholic and drinks a lot of meals.  there’s no aa in the wasteland, kids.
