#/ the closest thing to a modern verse I'll have

A wave of light, tinkling giggles reverberated in the room — it's a sound that makes one think of faeries. The last thing that was seen before being flatlined was a pair of fiery purple rings. A scream had started to bubble up in his throat as mantis blades tore through what flesh and organic material remained. But the only thing that could escape Tokei's mouth was an ocean of sanguine — a fountain of sweet, syrupy blood.

Born in 1988 to a single mother in what one could only describe as a commune (some would say cult) in California, Ithaca never had a simple or normal childhood. One could argue that it wasn't even much of a happy one; between growing up basically in poverty and having a parent that so obviously didn't want her. At the age of 12, Ithaca was abandoned in Nightcity when her mother's commune converted into a nomad group. Laylani left Ithaca to fend for herself without her giving so much as a goodbye. A penchant for violence served her well in her journey to survive. Tooth and nail she scrapped by living on the streets for a stint till she was taken in by a rather kindhearted couple. For the first time she knew what a loving home was. But by 14 they were dead (caused by gang activity) and once again she was alone. In her teens, she took easy odds and ends jobs till she was 18; at which point she took up a career as a dancer in a club. And while she enjoyed a party lifestyle, it wasn't satisfactory enough. There was a craving for ultraviolence, for bloodshed.

Slowly she started to dip her toes into mercenary work, specifically assassinations. At this point in her life too, she had started to join the Cult of Bhaal --- a group dedicated to sowing chaos, murder and destruction of all life. Strangely enough, there were several members she would come to learn as being blood related to her, specifically as half siblings.

By the time 2020 rolls around, Ithaca has become a skilled edgerunner known as Archfey. However, while her mercenary career boomed, her job as a dancer took a hit. Mainly because of an incident where she mutilated a patron. She makes sure to keep her persona as an edgerunner as far away from her personal name/identity as possible.

In 2023 she opens her own club called Faerie Fire in Westbrook which serves as of course a way to make money but also serve as a front to hide the more nefarious activities of the Cult of Bhaal, which she's managed to grasp the highest leadership role of due to dedication and her own viciousness.

Most people tend to mellow out with age. And perhaps just a smidge she has. But even in 2077, Ithaca is still as cutthroat, cruel and insane as ever. Her rule of the cult still reigns, cutting down anyone that opposes her. And while she still takes on jobs, a lot more of her focus goes towards planing chaos. As always too, the Cult of Bhaal continues to meddle in politics as well as continuing their usual rites. Faerie Fire still persists, and once in a blue moon she plays the role of fixer. What reputation her alias has gathered is not one that is revered or heroic; no, Archfey is a monster that no one wants to encounter, no matter what their walk of life is. Many things haven't changed. If anyone is ever unlucky enough to cross paths with Ithaca, one noticeable thing (besides obvious features) is how she doesn't look a day over 30.

Physical features of note: a rose tattoo on the left side of her neck, flesh covered in freckles, looks mostly organic though has mantis blades, faerie wings tattooed on her back, pierced brow and ear lobes and hair dyed rose pink.

I dunno if this really counts as desert themed, but in Mario Kart Tour Daisy has an outfit called the Thai Dress!

I am a fan of the Thai dress! Thailand is mostly made up of forested mountains and fertile planes rather than desert, yes, but since I imagine Sarasaland as a Mario-verse reimagining of the Ottoman Empire (particularly when it was at it's height in the 16th century) there is a bit of crossover in terms of style elements, with a heavy focus on fine silks and linens decorated with large intricate patterns and shimmering metallic threads.

The worlds of Super Mario Land were all over place in terms of where they took inspiration from, but most modern interpretations of Sarasaland focus on desert regions like the Birabuto Kingdom (which is heavily Egyptian themed, with Egypt having been a province of the Ottoman Empire for over 200 years) and the closest thing we have to a modern visual for Sarasaland is the Daisy Circuit– an active harbor, like how the Ottoman Empire carried out most of it's trade through the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf.

Uuuh... I forgot where I was gong with this. TL;DR: Daisy's Thailand dress is probably the closest thing I'll get to seeing her in 16th Century Ottoman Empire inspired garb.

Reflecting more NJPW and watching the G1 this year, something finally clicked with me. When AEW talks about "sports-like presentation" or putting in ring wrestling first and telling stories that way, I feel like NJPW has been emulating that energy way more than AEW itself. The parts that I like in AEW, I find more in spades in NJPW. I like Dynamite, but sometimes it can get too promo/pomp and circumstance heavy for me if they aren't doing marquee matches or important promos after a decisive win/defeat. What I usually look forward to in terms of a wrestling show are Collisions, because that's usually the day they book crazy or interesting matches with the more "sports entertainment" segments isolated in the Patriarchy-verse or BBG or HOB verses. And even then, they take their shenanigans seriously, if that makes sense? In New Japan, you still have out there gimmicks and characters like EVIL, Great O Khan, and Gabe Kidd, but they feel sincere. Same goes for Christian Cage, BBG and HOB, they feel sincere and at least try to be creative with their shenanigans too. But then you get acts on Dynamite like the new Elite, Jericho, MJF, who are so tongue in cheek and smarky, who don't wrestle a lot, rely on promos that reference smth extremely online, etc. I'm tired of it. Gabe Kidd is a foul, loudmouth brat who waves the flag of his company like MJF, but somehow his energy is different from Max's where you feel immersed in his character. I can't quite place it or describe it other than a true sense of sincerity and passion that radiates off of Gabe but not MJF, regardless of intention.

The more I think about it, I think modern American wrestling TV can't really do true "sport-like" presentation the same way NJPW or NOAH does because of it's weekly format. Old ROH was pretty close to that at times and it wasn't weekly for a long time. I think in modern days, CMLL is the closest to a weekly western sports-like wrestling show, but even then, they have their own quirks like heel refs and nebulous rules not being enforced. When Ospreay first came in and had his feuds with Bryan and Swerve, the way he approached it felt like something from NJPW. His character is very sincere, the stakes were simple, realistic, but managed to be emotional as seen with Swerve. Which is why I've been disappointed by the MJF feud until the very end where Max blurts out his insecurities or the debate over the "feeling" of AEW that were mentioned at the very beginning, but were sidelined by the whole America vs UK thing.

DGMW, I still like promos and the pomp and circumstance of American wrestling, I like the variety and creativity it provides; the Toni Storm-Mariah feud is an amazing example of it. And out of all the mainstream American wrestling shows, I'll choose AEW over the other ones. But if you're trying to market your promotion as a "sports-based" pro wrestling show, but your matches have distractions and interferences and run-ins from a lot of different groups...then be honest with yourself. NJPW only really has one faction that does DQs and interferences and a lot of people don't like them: House of Torture. It used to be the Bullet Club's thing to do that, but even the War Dogs have taken up the honorable villain approach to matches now, aside from the stray "Gedo hands David Finlay a weapon" or "Gabe Kidd low blows you" moments. Those are starting to become even rarer too.

I deeply enjoy the process of extrapolating what we know of them in canon to a verse they’ve never been in, both writing it myself and exploring what others do with them! :D

Flint is an HVAC guy who gives Silver a loan essentially (after some coaxing) for a new furnace in the middle of winter. Anyway it’s. I mean I love everything this author writes but this one is my all time fave.

Notes: And here’s the last of the twofrontteeth trilogy of my favorite mod au lmao. I basically always read all three of these in a row. This is the one that I would say is the closest to a canon map over. But we start after what would have been canon events, after the Break Up, as it were. 

All three have this writing style I just adore like... it’s so striking. It’s funny but also resonant and visceral. Anyway, treat yourself. Everyone should read these.

Notes: Michigan verse!! God I love these boys, they’re so fun and wholesome. Massage therapist Silver, fishing charter Flint with setting as a character in such an interesting way!! The worldbuilding is so great. This fic (and series) is a romp and it will leave you with a giant grin. Also the smut is GREAT.

Notes: Another verse that has such Personality!! I love the Butterscotch boys so much, they are very distinct in my head. This series has a little bit of everything and covers some hard topics while also containing fluff, smut, and sidesplitting comedy. Just, top tier.

“Behave yourself,” Thomas says, letting irritation color his voice. It’s not entirely feigned; Thomas had rather hoped for another hour or so of tranquility before Silver began his antics.

Artist!Flint and Actor!Silver meet and fall in love in NYC during the winter, entering into a whirlwind romance. Inevitably they have a devastating break up, and then meet up nearly a year later to restart the cycle all over again. This was an exercise in big character moments as shown through sex scenes, therefore there is a veritable buffet of different types of sexual encounters, definitely the most powerplay and varied kink exploration I have done by density, and also the most sophisticated/complicated. It features my favorite Flavor of desperate sub!Silver and possessive Dom!Flint heavily, though some role reversal surprises await you as well. Features a non-linear narrative and ambiguous ending.
