(AHHH THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL THE QUESTIONS!! :DD)
2. Is there a trope you’ve yet to try your hand at, but really want to?
I already answered this one here, but I’ll add a few other tropes I haven’t tried yet but would probably enjoy - time-travel, development-of-superpowers and apocalypse!au
3. Is there a trope youwouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole?
Any explicit trope, especially non/dub-con or mpreg. Just, nope, definitely not thanks. With regards to tropes that I’m generally not fond of as opposed to grossed-out by, I’m not really one for body-swap or imprinting (I’ll read them if I’m desperate for fic, and they can be done quite well but I don’t think I’d ever enjoy writing either).
5. Share one of your strengths.
I think I’m quite good at writing characters who are panicking or not entirely aware of what’s going on. I like doing experimental prose in those kind of scenarios and I think it turns out quite well.
7. Share a snippet from one of your favourite pieces of prose you’ve writtenand explain why you’re proud of it.
Hmm, well this is a snippet from the very start of a GF fic I haven’t worked on in quite a while but really should because 1. the idea is neat and 2. I do really like the opening and it would be kinda sad to let it go to waste:
He is drowning.
Well, not quite, because no way is he going let himself go out that easily, but he can barelyhold himself and Ford above the water as the waves grab at them, desperate topull them apart and he
(goes under for a second but then –)
he coughs he can hardly breathe he can hardly breathe and all he can see is whereseething sea meets raging sky and the wind is screaming and whatever the hellit was that tore their boat apart isscreaming but he’s not dead, he’s not dead yet and he won’t
let
it
happen
yet because he’sgot to keep Ford alive, he has to because right now if he goes under there’s noway his brother will make it.
11. Is writing your passion or just a fun hobby?
I kind of wish it was my passion - I know it definitely used to be. But yeah, it’s more of a hobby now, I think. Although I absolutely love the feeling I get when I have a good idea and it just flows onto the page.
13. What’s the best writing advice you’ve ever come across?
For me, personally? I went to a writing group the other day and they made me make a note of it on my phone, and it was: JUST FREAKING DO IT
On a more general note though - don’t worry if you first sentence is trashy is a good one, because honestly that’s half my problem, I think.
17. Do you write your story from start to finish, or do you write the scenesout of order?
Start to finish, although occasionally I’ll note down a scene if I want to preserve an idea for prose or dialogue. I like to know the emotional context that’s come beforehand. I will frequently delete whole swathes of prose or completely restart a scene if I’m not happy. The second chapter of Retrograde has about 4 or 5 wildly different versions now hahaha
19. Stephen King once said that his muse is a man who lives in the basement.Do you have a muse?
If I have a muse, it’s allusive and vaguely sadistic I think ahahah
23. If you were to revise one of your older fics from start to finish, whichwould it be and why?
Probably one of my old Avengers fics - I made significant progress writing a third part to my Post-Its trilogy, and some of the ideas were pretty solid, just not well executed. If I cared enough about it, I would almost certainly revamp it and do it justice. Unfortunately, I kinda don’t care about it much, which is a little sad.
One fic I would like to do properly, though, is another Avengers one I never finished/posted called Hide and Seek which kinda got screwed over by the collapse of SHIELD in Cap 2. But the idea was really cool and I still think about that one on occassion, and if there’s anyway I could revamp it. I also still care a LOT about my Experiment!Avengers AU - I think if I had the endurance I could still write that one. I filled at least two notebooks with ideas for that darn thing.
29. If you could write the sequel (or prequel) to any fic out there not written by yourself, which would you choose?
THIS IS HARD ummmmm I’m not sure?? The fics I really love and care about I don’t think I’d ever want to add to, just because I think they’re so excellent as they are! Also usually the fics I love the most are LONG and have SO MUCH DETAIL - fics like The Multiverse Triptych and Love in the Middle of a Firefight and Heavenward which are my top three fics of all time - there’s not much I feel I could add.
Possibly A Shock to the System by @marypsue - simply because I’d just love to mess around with Ford having powers. But again, I just wouldn’t want to touch it because it’s SO GOOD as it is. I also think that if CWR had finished Ad Noctum I would have LOVED to write something in that verse (especially since I now know they would have definitely gone to Destiny and just…Ad Noctum dynamics on Destiny would have been AMAZING).
31. Do you take liberties with canon or are you very strict about your ficbeing canon compliant?
I’m either incredibly compliant, or I say to hell with it and write a straight up au. I don’t really see the point in being inaccurate - if your story doesn’t fit, make it an au. It doesn’t have to be wildly different. And having a tag or descriptor of ‘au where a happened instead of b’ IMMEDIATELY gets me more interested ahaha
37. Talk about your current wips
Ahh! So I’ve mainly got three fics at the moment - Retrograde and the two GF fics, Zaratan and Ahklut.
Retrograde is probably my favourite, actually - I’m very proud of it and I just need to get my butt into gear and write the next part (@peppercheeni and @wierdogal and other SGU friends - YELL AT ME). For those who don’t know, in the first chapter Rush and Scott get captured by horrible aliens who want to get information on how to invade Destiny. The second chapter is going to be the in incursion, from Rush’s POV again, but there’s been a time gap because he fell unconscious at the end of the first chapter. And then depending on the chapter length, there’s a third section that’ll either be part of chapter 2, a third chapter or a separate fic about solving all the unresolved problems from Rush and Scott getting captured and the incursion itself.
Zaratan is about Ford and Stan post-canon getting attacked by a cryptid in the Stan O War II - it’s quite a while post canon, since they’ve moved from the Arctic Ocean to the tropics, hoping to investigate anomalies in the Bermuda Triangle. The ship gets destroyed, Ford gets injured/concussed and Stan is fine, but inconveniently has a really bad amnesia-lapse, meaning that when he wakes up on an island with a random unconscious guy he has no idea who he is or what happened. I yelled with @archervale about it a while back and it was actually pretty awesome.
Ahklut is a written response to a thing Archie drew - see here - where I researched random cryptids that could also swim and shapeshift and found TWO. BOTH OF WHICH WERE MILDLY TERRIFYING. Basically I picked one and messed around with it a bit. May or may not finish it but I made Archie and Jen yell on the skype chat at least xD
