Harwin chuckles at Jace, nodding his head. "Even then," he promises, ruffling the boy's hair. Dark hair like his. Dark eyes like his. He looks so much like Harwin that it hurts. He'll never be able to call the boy his own.
"No matter what it is, I'm here for you. I serve your mother, but I'm loyal to your family." To you, my son. "Alright?"

Her words brought a sad smile to his face. It was his job to protect her and their younger siblings. He was their older brother and a protector. There was so much he needed to do and it felt like his work would never be done but Jace was the heir, the next to the Iron Throne, and he had to make sure everyone was safe. Their family meant everything to him and their right was being stolen from them because of the Greens and their false King. Their disrespect knew no end. "You are too kind but it is my job to keep you safe." He spoke and gently placed a hand on her shoulder and squeezed. They shouldn't been fighting this nonsense war. They should be at the Red Keep and making it their home. Learning and watching from their Mother as she became the true and proper Queen she had every right to be.  "I must keep you and the others safe. This war cannot claim you." Jace spoke as he thought of Luke. It should have never come to that. Never should he have been lost to the sea because of Aemond. There was a fire inside Jacaerys that made him want to fight Aemond on his own and avenged Lucerys but what more could be done? It wouldn't bring Luke back to them and that's all he ever wanted. Jace wanted his family back and things to be how they should be. To be righted but he wasn't even sure he would ever get such a thing.  It was all going to be blood and fire now.

ALL HER CHILDHOOD IN THE CAPITAL, SHE HAD TODDLED AFTER JACE WITH LUKE IN HAND. Understood, with a child's understanding and her muña's words, that Jace was heir, their oldest brother, their protector. But who would protect Jace with the Green's at their back? They had already stolen Luke from her, ripped apart a bond she had thought eternal. How could she stand to let them take Jace as well? To watch muña grieve yet another dead child?
(She had never known a life without her brother's till Vhagar's gnashing teeth and her uncle's madness, she would not take Jacaerys for granted.)
“Nor can it claim you, Jace. It would break muña, break me." She would sooner throw herself to Vhagar's flames than light another brother's pyre. (She would spare her mother one child's death for anothers.) A selfish thought perhaps, but she would prefer her brother to have a life long-lived than one brutally cut short. He will make a great King one day, she knows it, it is her duty as the younger to ensure he lives long enough to see it.
"If you were to fall than all would be lost."

Indeed, she wasn't. None of them were children any longer other than their youngest siblings. They were growing up in a setting that was losing its safety each day, which scared him. Jacaerys was sure his mother was also worried about the fleeting peace but hadn't said much. "No, you are not. However, there is not much else that can be offered. These are times when each day seems uncertain, and we cannot give a solid answer to most questions." He admitted while moving around the painted table. He looked over the markers to see what could happen next. Where could they go next? They needed to stay ahead of the Greens no matter the costs. "What would you wish me to say? The truth isn't always pleasant, and the world becomes darker each morning. I am only trying to keep our spirits lifted..." He was doing his best to look after his younger siblings and to keep them from worrying like the rest of them, but even Jace was starting to struggle with what to say. There needed to be practice in this. No lesson. He just had to do what he thought was best...

SHE IS NOT ASKING HIM TO DELIVER THE SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSE. Simply to trust her in their plans as a dragonrider, as his sister. She has been preparing for a fight her entire life, honing her skills from the groundwork their fathers' had built. She refused to be complacent, to be blindsided yet again. (She would not lose another to this war.)
"That you trust me. That you have not forgotten who held muna together in the aftermath, while Daemon ordered a child's death." How was she to keep her spirit's lifted in the face of that? For all Luke had not wished to die, he would not have wished for an innocent child to pay the price for it either.
"I will follow wherever you wish, shield and defend what is necessary but i can not do that based on empty promises and platitudes. We are not children anymore, the Greens ensured it." With treachery and betrayal around every corner, what's left of the House of the Dragon must stay united against those that would love nothing more than to witness their downfall, to steal not just their mother's throne but their very lives as well.

"There has always been villainy..." It had just been hidden from them for so long that perhaps when it did happen, they weren't used to it. They were no strangers to the Queen's and her sons' unkindness, but it hadn't been like this even then. This had only gotten worse as the years went on, no matter what was done. Nothing seemed to change, and soon, he feared what sort of world they would be in. What would become of their family? There were many possible outcomes, but Jacaerys didn't want to consider them; they weren't entirely favorable. Most things were starting to become unfavorable if he was honest with himself. "Honor and villainy are always present. Never leaving the world we have not seen it like this before, and it is a shock to us. We must keep our honor. Do not sink to such levels as others have.."
Tumblr media
WHY IS UPHOLDING HONOR FORCED ONTO THEIR SHOULDERS AND NOT THE GREENS WHO SO BLAISELY DEFY IT? A stupid question, really, when the answer is so obvious - The Greens see Aerea and her brothers as bastards, unnatural abominations in the face of their precious seven, any misstep or lost temper would simply prove their superstitions right, no matter that their uncles have done far worse, no matter that their grandsire has decreed such words as treason. (She remembers blood spilt at Driftmark, hers, her brothers, her mothers, and yet no punishment issued.)
"I do not think sinking to their depths of depravity to be possible, though stranger things have happened." Though she would never deny the safety and freedom their time on Dragonstone has brought, she can not help but long for the days of the childhood in the Keep, not for the scrutiny and judgement it held, but the family as of yet unbroken, for kepa and Ser Harwin, innocence not yet taken.
"They have their honor, and we have ours."

Theldry gives him a look. "Lessons are always boring," she says. "You still have to focus on them, no matter how fun the dragonpit is." She ruffles the young boy's hair before she picks up the book he'd been reading. "Come on. We'll take a walk so you can get some fresh air. It might be easier to focus out there instead of sitting in the library."

Harwin puts his hand on Jace's shoulder, breathing in and out slowly with Jace as the boy tries to calm down. When the boy seems a little calmer, he releases his shoulder. "What happened?" he asks. "Did someone say something?"

"Did you?" Jace asked with a raised brow. He hadn't meant to stay in Winterfell for so long but he had bonded well with Lord Cregan Stark. Vermax hadn't enjoyed the colder climate but Jace had enjoyed the change of scenery and learning about the Old Gods and the Wall. It had been quite the experience but he didn't think that anyone had been too worried about him or even thought that he was dead. Perhaps something else had happened to where they thought should things but he wasn't sure that he wanted to really ask that question. "I will always make sure to come home…" He promised but Jace knew that he couldn't always keep that promise not with war looming over them and their family like a dark cloud. It felt as if the Stranger was waiting on them and ready to take another. He wouldn't let anything happen to his family. It was his duty as the heir and brother to protect them with all that he could.
Tumblr media
WERE IT NOT FOR THE INCREASING EYES ON THEIR PERSONS SINCE THEIR UNCLE'S USURPATION, AEREA MAY HAVE SMACKED HIM FOR ALL TO SEE. There have been far too many losses in too short a time for her to be comfortable with her brother's cavalier attitude, a surprisinging addition considering his time amongst the Northerners and their, to be blunt, less cheery disposition.
"Your raven was mislaid and your Vermax slower than expected. Mother feared for you." Aerea had feared for him. Jacaerys is now all that stands between her and a life chained to the Iron Throne. She needs him to keep breathing out of more than mere familial sentiment, no matter the guilt the thought creates. (Mother has already lost grandsire, Visenya, Luke. Losing Jace may just shatter her further.)
She can not help the comparison his words conjure, to another promise made, at the beginning of the end in the Red Keep. ('I will visit. when i can' - 'We will be strangers next we meet') She wonders if she masks the reproach in her voice as well as she thought, "Do not make promises you can not keep, lēkia. You sound like Ser Harwin."
