Brazil's exports to U.S. reach record high ahead of tariffs
Sales to the U.S. hit historic peaks in volume and value; AmCham urges caution as Donald Trump’s policies unfold

Brazil’s exports to the United States hit a record high in 2024, marking a “historic” year, according to the American Chamber of Commerce for Brazil (AmCham). However, this achievement coincides with looming changes anticipated from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who is expected to introduce new tariffs.
Brazil’s exports to the U.S. reached unprecedented levels in both value and volume, according to AmCham’s Brazil-U.S. Trade Monitor, as reported by Valor.
In value terms, exports totaled $40.3 billion, reflecting a 9.2% increase compared to 2023. This outpaced Brazil’s overall export performance, which saw a 0.8% decline and exceeded the growth rates of key partners like the European Union (4.2%), China (-9.5%), and Mercosur (-14.1%).
In volume, Brazil shipped 40.7 million tonnes to the U.S., a growth rate nine times higher than the 1.1% increase recorded for Brazilian exports globally.

Mexico, a Leap Board for China's new energy vehicle industry to enter the United States?
(By Robert, cnboxingring.com)-Neighboring the United States to the north and Latin America to the south, Mexico is becoming an important leap board for China's new energy vehicle industry to expand overseas.
From recent years, it can be seen that China's new energy vehicle industry has begun to emerge in this traditional automotive industry integration area. In addition to the astonishing growth rate of vehicle sales, Chinese new energy vehicle companies and supply chain manufacturers have also concentrated on building factories in Mexico to lay out the local new energy industry chain, because their gaze has never been solely on Mexico itself.
An emerging producer and seller of new energy vehicles
For Chinese new energy vehicle companies, Mexico is becoming a promising overseas market, which is closely related to the development of the local automotive industry and the state of the automotive market.
Current situation of the Mexican automotive market
The automotive industry is Mexico's largest manufacturing sector and a pillar industry - according to the Mexican Association of Automobile Manufacturers (AMIA), the automotive industry accounts for 3.8% of Mexico's gross domestic product (GDP) and 20.5% of its manufacturing output.
But unlike other major automobile manufacturing countries, Mexico's automobile manufacturing industry is highly fragmented from its domestic automobile market.
As the sixth largest automobile production base in the world, Mexico's total automobile production in 2022 was 3.308 million units, an increase of 9.2% compared to 3.028 million units in 2021. Even under the influence of the global pandemic, Mexico's annual automobile production reached 3.04 million vehicles in 2020, which is far from the historical high of 4.665 million vehicles in 2014. However, the annual production can still maintain a stable level of around 3 million vehicles.
Meanwhile, Mexico is also the fourth largest exporter of light vehicles in the world, and domestically produced cars in Mexico are mainly used for export. In 2022, out of Mexico's 3.308 million car production, 2.866 million vehicles were exported, accounting for 86.6% of the total, mainly to North America, South America, and Europe. Nearly 80% of the exported vehicles are shipped to the US market each year. In 2022 alone, Mexico exported 2.222 million vehicles to the United States, accounting for 77.5% of the total.
In terms of sales, the annual sales of new cars in the Mexican automotive market are approximately one million units. According to statistics from the Mexican Automobile Industry Association (AMIA), a total of 1.095 million cars were sold in the Mexican automobile market in 2022, an increase of 7.8% year-on-year from 1.015 million cars in 2021. Even under the influence of COVID-19, the Mexican auto market hit a low point in 2020, but 950,000 new cars were sold.
At this volume, the sales of new energy vehicles account for a very small proportion.
For example, among the average annual sales of millions of new cars, the total sales of new energy vehicles in Mexico in 2022 were 51065, accounting for 4.7% of the new car sales of 1.095 million. This still includes the overall data of pure electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid new energy vehicles. If we look at it in detail, the annual sales of pure electric vehicles are 5631 units, accounting for only 11% of the sales of new energy vehicles and 0.5% of the overall sales of new cars in China.
Compared to pure electric vehicles, hybrid cars are more popular in the Mexican market. According to data from the Mexican Association of Automobile Manufacturers (AMIA), in 2020, only 1.8% of electric vehicle registrations in Mexico were pure electric vehicles, which increased to 2.4% in 2021. By 2022, the proportion of pure electric vehicle registrations had jumped to 8.8%, while hybrid vehicles still accounted for the majority.
Of course, the overall sales of new energy vehicles are also increasing year by year, from 24405 in 2020 to 47079 in 2021, reaching 51065 in 2022. Under this trend, the Mexican National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) predicts that by 2030, the national sales of electric vehicles in Mexico will reach 72655 units.
Interestingly, as an important global automobile production base, Mexico's automobile production mainly serves non local markets, and local automobile sales mainly rely on automobile imports.
According to data statistics, Mexico imported a total of 651710 cars from around the world in 2022. Among them, 153707 vehicles come from China, accounting for about 23.6%, which is twice the number of imported Chinese cars compared to the same period in 2021. Now, Mexico has become the largest market for Chinese vehicle exports, with one out of every four imported cars from Mexico being from China. China has also jumped from being the fourth largest supplier of automobiles to Mexico, followed by the United States (92591 vehicles), Brazil (88592 vehicles), and Japan (65714 vehicles).
This year, Chinese cars are also continuing this trend. Guillermo Rossles, the head of the Mexican Automobile Dealers Association (AMDA), has stated that from January to August 2023, cars from China accounted for 19.4% of Mexican car imports, which is more than three times the proportion of 5.7% in the same period in 2018.
For any Chinese car brand, the annual sales of millions of new cars and the emerging new energy market undoubtedly have great potential.
Cheap models are more popular
Mexican car consumption benefits from the economy but is also limited by it.
On the one hand, as an economic powerhouse in Latin America, Mexico's consumer demand for cars is constantly increasing; On the other hand, due to the uneven economic development in Mexico, local consumers are more inclined to choose low-end models with lower prices.
In 2022, Mexico's GDP reached $1.29 trillion, ranking second among Latin American countries. With the development of Mexico's economy, coupled with poor public transportation conditions, people's demand for private cars has also been strong. Last year, the number of cars owned by a thousand people in Mexico has reached 330.
However, Mexico still belongs to a developing country, with problems of uneven resource allocation and large wealth gap. The proportion of low-income groups is also higher, and the polarization of vehicles traveling on Mexico's roads also reflects the local people's consumption capacity issues - or it is a very large typical American pickup sports car, such as the Ford Explorer and Chevrolet Saboban; Or it could be compact cars like Nissan Sylphy and Chevrolet Avio.
Of course, the best-selling models on the Mexican market are mostly low-end small sedans, compact SUVs, small pickup trucks and other A-class cars, also known as "outdated models eliminated from the market 20 or 30 years ago.".
Coincidentally, Mexico lacks influential local car brands, making it a huge dumping ground for major global car manufacturers. Coupled with the foundation laid by multinational car manufacturers in the traditional fuel era, Nissan, General Motors, Volkswagen, Toyota, and Kia dominate the top five car sales rankings in Mexico.
Relatively speaking, although Chinese car companies currently have a much lower market share in Mexico than multinational car manufacturers in Europe, America, Japan, and South Korea, their performance in sales growth is very impressive. According to the Mexican National Bureau of Statistics (INEGI), from January to July 2023, Chinese car brands accounted for 9.3% of sales, an increase of more than ten times compared to 0.6% in 2019.
In 2022, SAIC MG sold 48112 vehicles in Mexico, accounting for 4.4% of the market share, an increase of 194.1% compared to last year's sales of 16358 vehicles. JAC JAC sold 16357 vehicles annually, accounting for 1.5% of the market share, an increase of 99.4% compared to last year's 8203 vehicles.
In terms of price, SAIC MG starts at 298000 pesos (approximately RMB 125000) in the Mexican market, while JAC JAC starts at 299000 pesos (approximately RMB 125000). Basically, the price is at the same level as the mainstream small gasoline vehicles on the market.
Although it is not possible to give some high-end new energy brands an advantage in terms of price, a large base can allow Chinese new energy vehicle companies to introduce more cost-effective and popular models into the market, in order to win the favor of Mexican consumers.
Emerging Chinese car companies
Supported by sales, many Chinese brands have emerged in the Mexican market.
The Mexican National Bureau of Statistics has compiled a list of the six most popular Chinese brands in the local market for 2023.
SAIC MG sold 4925 cars in the Mexican market in March 2023.
Chery CHERY, one of the Chinese car brands that recently entered the Mexican market, sold a total of 3369 cars in Mexico in March 2023.
JAC, which entered Mexico in 2017, is also one of the earliest Chinese automotive brands to enter Mexico. In March 2023, it sold 1713 cars throughout Mexico.
BAIC, Jiangling, and Changan jointly sold 1035 cars under the name Motornation in Mexico in March 2023.
In addition to the traditional vehicle export model, Chinese car companies, including new energy, are also gradually exploring models of building factories in Mexico or deep cooperation with local agents.
As of now, Chinese new energy vehicle companies entering Mexico include but are not limited to:
In 2019, JAC Motor officially launched new energy vehicles in Mexico. JAC Motor has always been one of the main suppliers of electric vehicles in the local market, and has established an assembly plant in the state of Idalgo in Mexico.
In 2022, Chery Automobile entered the Mexican market and sold under the name Chirey locally. It plans to build a factory in Mexico this year with an annual production capacity of 400000 vehicles, which will mainly be used for the production of new energy vehicles. In October 2023, Brian Wu, Executive Vice President of Chery Mexico, announced that Chery plans to return to the US market and revealed that the first batch of cars to enter the US includes pure electric and plug-in hybrid models produced in Mexican factories.
In December 2022, Jetour Motors signed a cooperation agreement with Mexico's LDR Group to officially enter the Mexican market. In March 2023, Jetour announced an investment of $3 billion to establish new factories in the states of Aguascalientes or Guanajuato, Mexico. The factory is expected to open in 2024 and initially produce gasoline powered vehicles, with pure electric vehicles produced within two to three years.
On March 15, 2023, SAIC Group announced the first launch of the self operated Ningde Mexico international route. Load MG MULAN Mulan's new car and head to the port of Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico. In April, SAIC MG announced that it was considering building a new factory in Mexico and planned to enter the US market.
In March 2023, Great Wall Motors established a subsidiary in Mexico and successively launched two new energy vehicles. A relevant person in charge stated that Great Wall has initiated research on investment projects for local factories. On September 7, 2023, Great Wall Motors GWM brand and Haval H6 HEV held a "Hello Tomorrow" themed press conference in Mexico City, officially entering Mexico.
Undoubtedly, Mexico's ability to become an important site for the global new energy vehicle industry layout is closely related to its huge market potential, important strategic position, and support for the new energy vehicle industry.
However, Mexico's electrification journey seems to be longer than other countries or regions. Or rather, it doesn't seem so clear.
In the actual implementation process, even Tesla, a globally unique new energy vehicle company, faces significant challenges. At the financial report meeting, Musk also admitted that building a factory in Mexico may incur higher cost pressures.
The current situation in Mexico is not enough to support the rapid development of new energy. But choosing to go to Mexico to build a factory, Chinese new energy vehicle supply chain companies believe that Tesla's Mexico factory can drive the growth of new energy in Mexico. Chinese new energy vehicle companies are also optimistic that the Mexican market, with millions of new cars added each year. It is a blue ocean.
After all, besides Mexico, what everyone is looking at is the larger American market behind it.

Is the prescription effective The growth rate of the retail end of the six major anticancer drugs exceeded 500 and Roche Hengrui and AZ products rank
On June 4, the first municipal electronic prescription information sharing service platform in Shanxi Province was officially launched, led by the Health Committee of Jincheng City, Shanxi Province. The platform will cover 22 secondary and above medical institutions in the city. Through the his system of the above medical institutions, the city's unified standard prescription database will be established.
in fact, similar models have been launched in many places in recent years. The launch of regional prescription information sharing platform has accelerated the realization of "prescription outflow". According to the data of Minet, the proportion of prescription drugs sold by urban retail pharmacies in 2019 will reach 51.0%, more than half for the first time. Among them, the highest annual growth rate is the chemical drugs of anti-tumor and immunomodulators, reaching 85.7%.
Internet plus Internet novel coronavirus pneumonia has dominated local
. Since its issuance on the promotion of Internet plus medical health, the state and relevant ministries and commissions have issued several documents, involving access, payment, supervision and many other aspects, and the new crown pneumonia epidemic has accelerated the policy of "non-contact".
policy benefits attract many enterprises layout, such as the health of Ali, which announced the 2020 fiscal year results a few days ago, in April this year, combined with Alipay, in Ji'nan, Shandong took the lead in innovating the pilot's first internet medical mode based on electronic medical insurance vouchers, including "medical insurance electronic voucher application + online referral + online prescription transfer + online medical insurance payment + drugs". Including "home delivery", online medical insurance covering from consultation to drug purchaseOne stop service.
However, analysts also pointed out that the prescription information sharing platform led by the local health department, such as Jincheng, Shanxi Province, opens the port for the government's regulatory departments, so as to supervise the circulation of prescriptions in real time and in the whole process. Therefore, it is easier to obtain the qualification of Online payment and reimbursement of medical insurance, and finally realize the connection with the existing services, becoming a one-stop closed-loop drug purchase .
from the perspective of the whole chain of medical circulation, the greater significance of prescription information sharing platform is to connect the fragmented information systems between different levels of medical institutions, and solve the problem of online prescription circulation and sharing between hospitals and pharmacies. A hospital official who has launched the extension service disclosed that because the extension platform is not limited by the drug types of medical institutions, it can make prescriptions according to the specific conditions of patients through the platform, which enriches the doctor's diagnosis and treatment programs and benefits patients more.
antitumor drug retail terminal
rapid increase from the "Internet plus medical insurance" development trend, the current medical insurance payment is mainly involved in chronic diseases and common diseases, re visit treatment fees and related prescription fees. In fact, as major diseases such as cancer gradually show a trend of chronic disease, the number of patients who benefit from it is gradually expanding, and drugs for common diseases, chronic diseases, major diseases and other long-term use are also flowing out of hospital.
according to the data of MI Nei network, chemical drugs accounted for 54.5% of the drug sales scale of China's urban physical pharmacies (including cities at prefecture level and above) in 2019, an increase of 3.2 percentage points compared with 2018. fromIn terms of drug types, prescription drugs successfully accounted for half of the country, with a market share of 51.0%, an increase of 2.7 percentage points compared with 2018. Non prescription drugs accounted for 39.8%, and double span drugs accounted for 9.2%.
according to the analysis, this is closely related to the sales of new anti-tumor drugs approved in recent two years through out of hospital channels such as DTP pharmacy. A similar situation can be seen from the annual growth rate of each sub category. According to the data of mienei.com, the highest annual growth rate of chemical drugs in urban entity pharmacies in 2019 is anti-tumor and immunomodulators, accounting for 85.7%; coincidentally, the highest annual growth rate of Chinese patent medicines is also cancer drugs, accounting for 31.0%.
specifically, in 2019, the growth rate of terminal sales of retail pharmacies in China's cities will exceed 500%, and six of them will be antineoplastic drugs.
over 100 million chemical drug brands (unit: 10000 yuan) with a sales growth rate of more than 500% in urban retail drugstores in 2019
Among them, the most powerful is the Roche aletinib hydrochloride capsule, which was included in the priority review in March 2018 and approved to enter the Chinese market in August of the same year. It is used to treat locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer with positive ALK. According to the data of minenet, at the terminals of public medical institutions in China, the sales volume of Roche's aletinib hydrochloride capsules was 8.88 million yuan in 2018, and soared to 139 million yuan in 2019, with a growth rate of 1461.71%;In China's urban retail drugstore terminals, the sales volume of the product was 890000 yuan in 2018 and soared to 211 million yuan in 2019, with a growth rate of 23608.99%. Considering that aletinib hydrochloride capsule has been successfully included in the national medical insurance negotiation catalogue of 2019, it is expected that the sales of the product in China's public medical institutions will continue to rise in 2020.
the paclitaxel for injection (albumin binding type) of Hengrui medicine, which was approved for production in 2018, was regarded as over evaluated. According to the pattern data of retail pharmacies in China's cities on minet.com, the sales of this drug increased by 6434.85% in 2019, exceeding 900 million yuan. Xinji, the original research enterprise of the product, was announced by the State Food and Drug Administration in March this year. It was found that some key production facilities did not meet the basic requirements of China's drug production quality management during the on-site inspection of overseas production, and the aseptic safeguard measures were not in place in the production process. Therefore, the import, sales and use of the product were suspended in accordance with the law. It is expected that domestic brands will continue to share market space.
the growth rate of olaparide of AstraZeneca was the third. In January 2018, the drug was included in the priority review on the grounds of "obvious treatment advantages compared with existing treatment methods"; then it was approved for maintenance treatment of platinum sensitive recurrent ovarian cancer patients in August. According to the overseas market data, as the world's first listed PARP inhibitor, olapari accounted for 64% of the global PARP inhibitor market share in 2017, with global sales reaching US $297 million, with a year-on-year growth rate of 36.24%.In 2019, olapali also achieved sales of more than 200 million pocketprep cissp yuan in China's urban retail drugstore terminal, with a year-on-year growth of 952.31%. Considering that the product was approved for the first-line maintenance treatment of BRCA mutation advanced ovarian cancer in December 2019, another indication was expanded in China, and the applicable population was significantly expanded. At present, the drug has also successfully entered the 2019 version of medical insurance catalog, and its sales are expected to continue to maintain an upward trend.
in recent years, pharmaceutical companies have also increased their market share in the retail market. Of course, this is also in line with the cisa exam scoring method fact that the physical retail drugstores actively grasp the varieties of drug companies that flow and discard the standard after purchasing with volume, increase the opportunities of retail layout, speed up the layout of hospital side stores, DTP drugstores and pharmaceutical e-commerce, and vigorously improve the capacity of undertaking prescription drugs and pharmaceutical service.

RECENT NEWS, RESOURCES & STUDIES, June 28 2020
Welcome to my latest summary of recent ecommerce news, resources & studies including search, analytics, content marketing, social media & Etsy! This covers articles, podcasts, videos and infographics I came across since the late May report, although some may be older than that.
I am currently working on Etsy search testing and a few new blog posts and pages for my website, so it may be a few more weeks before I get a new report out. In the meantime, if you have an questions, comments or suggestions, please contact me here or on my website.
TOP NEWS & ARTICLES
Ecommerce sales are way up, but so are many costs, and delays in shipping are part of the problem. “...many of our merchants start preparing mid-year for peak-season volume, holidays. We’ve seen many merchants hitting and even exceeding their normal Black Friday and Cyber Monday volumes consistently through April, forcing them to adapt quickly for greater capacity.” UPS is charging high-volume customers a surcharge based on how much more they are shipping compared to normal times, and also for an increase in oversized packages.
Mail delivery is still slow in many countries. Canada Post hit an all-time delivery record with 2.1 million parcels on May 19, but may finally be getting caught up. [article in French] Shipping between countries can also be substantially delayed, in part due to the lack of air traffic right now. USPS is using sea transport for packages to some European countries. And USPS rates are going up for international shipping in July, due to the new Universal Postal Union deal. "Anyone who is a bulk shipper, your rates are going up".
A reminder that the US economy isn't suddenly going to stabilize in the fall; it’s likely to crash. The US is now officially in a recession. Many people are not going to have money for a lot of discretionary spending. Furthermore, some categories of items will likely drop in price due to company closures, supply chain issues and bankruptcies. That will increase competition at the same time there are fewer buyers for many types of items. Ecommerce sales in the US are projected to rise 18% this year, but it won’t be enough to make up for the loss of brick & mortar retail sales. “The apparel and accessories category is typically the second-largest in e-commerce, for example, but will only grow 8.6% as consumers shift spending away from discretionary, non-essential purchases.” Retail in the US is expected to be down more than 10% in 2020.
ETSY NEWS
Etsy has released an addition to the iOS app that will allow shoppers to use augmented reality to see wall art on their home’s walls. The Verge was critical of how long it took for Etsy to catch up with the competition, and the fact that it is not available for Android yet. TechCrunch went into more detail.
As mentioned last time, you can now add short, no-audio videos to your listings. Etsy is so big on this, they are offering listing credits and ad credits to sellers who upload 5 or more videos by July 6. As always, make sure you read the legal policies before you participate in this offer.
The Etsy Design Awards are back, with submissions due by July 15th. Note that they are only open to 38 countries, for some reason. There is a forum discussion thread with tips, and a podcast [audio & transcript] with previous winners.
If you sell any items for kids, you will find this trending items article from Etsy useful. Searches including “kid,” “child,” or “baby” didn’t go up as much in April as one might have expected, given the pandemic shopping bump, but puzzles were popular. They include some search terms: for example, there was a “250% YoY increase in searches on Etsy containing “jump rope” in April. Also, “while school may look different this fall, we’re already seeing an increase for school-related searches compared to the same time last year.”
Face mask seller ZhenLinen was interviewed on NPR [text and audio] about mask selling, and was even asked about the offsite ads fees near the end. They sold 31,000 masks while their event-supply business was in pandemic limbo; most of those sales were through Etsy. The good news articles about mask sales, & suggesting Etsy as a source of masks, are continuing, although some do mention slow delivery times and even undelivered orders. By the way, if any mask sellers are looking for new places to sell, Facebook finally caught up and is now allowing mask sales, ads and other promotions.
According to analysis of Etsy’s API data, May 2020 was Etsy’s best month ever. Remember that the API data misses things like sales of multiples, so it is not the most accurate source, but I don’t have any reason to doubt the statement is true.
Etsy stock went over $100 for the first time, before dropping as the rest of the market went down.
You have probably already seen Etsy’s statement on race issues after the recent murder in the US. “That’s why today we are announcing donations of $500,000 to the Equal Justice Initiative and $500,000 to Borealis Philanthropy’s Black-Led Movement Fund, as well as matching employee donations. We encourage our community to join us in supporting these important organizations. Etsy is built on a belief that communities have the power to change the status quo. Change is hard-fought, and we are committed to this fight.“
If you have your real name on your Etsy account, don’t attract any attention from the police.
SEO: GOOGLE & OTHER SEARCH ENGINES
If you don’t really understand what algorithms are and how they work for search engines, you will want to get caught up here. Key to understanding: “An algorithm is not a formula.”
This is a bit advanced, but it’s a good explanation of how to figure out searcher intent in Google results, and then fulfill it with new content. [video, transcript, and downloadable form]
Linking from one page on your website to another can be an important part of SEO. It can also help you get more page views, if you link to new pages from your most popular pages. Creating internal site links on the same page through a table of contents [advanced, coding info] can even get you more links in Google search results.
Speed on mobile devices is also a big part of SEO as well as conversions. “a 0.1 second improvement in site speed resulted in Retail conversions increases of 8.4% and average order value increases of 9.2%.”
Bing made changes to its backlink tool, including the ability to see your competition’s backlinks. The option is part of Bing’s Webmaster tools, & allows you to analyze “similar sites”. Their Webmaster Tools now can also analyze your site for SEO errors.
A former Google employee is starting a new search engine, called Neeva.
Some SEOs recommend removing “low-quality” pages from your site to improve your overall rankings, but low-quality doesn’t necessarily mean pages that few people visit [text & video]. And short posts are not necessarily “low-quality”. If your page is mostly duplicate content, it is like low quality, but just repeating a few lines on each page is not duplicate content.
Google missed a few episodes of its Google search news YouTube post during the pandemic, but they were back on May 26 with an update. They’ve also finally released their webspam report for 2019. “we observed that more than 25 Billion pages we discover each day are spammy.”
Advanced content [video with multi-language subtitles, & text summary in English]: Google, JavaScript, & links.
Shopify sites have built-in blogs, and those blogs can help you get sales through SEO. And while we are on Shopify SEO, here is some advice on fixing technical SEO issues on Shopify sites. [the second is advanced content unless you know some coding]
While having an author page isn’t a requirement on any news/blog site, it might be a good idea anyway [text and video]. Content that is useful for readers is ultimately good for your site’s SEO.
Here is a history of Google’s PageRank, and what it still does for ranking.
Did the Google May core update really mess up organic search relevance? Some people think so. [I had noticed the Wikipedia drop but thought it was just for a particular search.] There may be more ranking updates underway right now.
Google plans on introducing user experience as part of the ranking algorithm, although it won’t happen before next year, and we will get 6 months warning. Search Engine Land lists the following elements: “whether the page loads quickly, if it’s mobile-friendly, runs on HTTPS, the presence of intrusive ads and if content jumps around as the page loads.” They add a bunch of technical advice, and the tools to follow up on it.
Do you find SEO confusing? Don’t worry - even the pros working for big companies make huge errors.
(CONTENT) MARKETING & SOCIAL MEDIA (includes blogging & emails)
Updated infographic with the common social media image sizes used today. (Several of these get published yearly, because there are always changes.)
Is blogging still relevant? [TL;DR - yes] And if you want to write more interactive posts, here are some tools for that.
Video app TikTok made a lot of money in April, but is seeing competition from a new short video app called Zynn, which allows users to make money by watching videos and bringing in new users. However, Zynn has already been removed from Google Play store amid accusations of content theft. Instagram has a challenger called “Reels”, and even YouTube wants some of that TikTok traffic, so they are introducing 15 second videos. Meanwhile, TikTok is coming under closer scrutiny for its invasive tracking.
Every social network apparently needs to have their own version of Stories these days, so Pinterest has introduced a new version of Story Pins in the US. “Unlike Stories on other platforms, which are often self-focused snippets from someone’s life, Pinterest Stories Pins are designed as clickable content focused on sharing ideas. For example, Story Pins could offer a step-by-step guide to cooking a recipe or creating a craft project. A Story Pin could also offer ideas around how to reorganize your home office, keeping the kids entertained, beauty tutorials and more.”
Google appears to be imitating Pinterest with their new release, called “Keen”. You add items yourself but Google then attempts to find more things you are interested in, using AI.
If you are looking for some new tools to help with Instagram, Social Media Today compiled a list of 5 recent ones. They include image processing, templates, and analytics.
Twitter is beta-testing the ability to tweet sound files directly from the platform, instead of embedding links to other sites. The article notes that these may be more difficult to moderate than text tweets would be.
Two of the three parts of this article cover local businesses, but the middle part has some promotional ideas that mostly involve content marketing & social media. Nothing groundbreaking, but a decent list if you are looking for new free ways to advertise.
ONLINE ADVERTISING (SEARCH ENGINES, SOCIAL MEDIA, & OTHERS)
Semi-advanced - how to improve your Google Ads optimization score.
GCLID is short for “Google Click Identifier” to help track ads and conversions. You can learn more here. [Understanding this is useful for both your own ad campaigns and understanding other ads, such as the Etsy Offsite Ads program.)
Money coming in from social media video ads has increased from the lows in April. Facebook ads have improved the most.
New advertisers on Instagram will not necessarily have to link their accounts to Facebook any more. It may be linked to a campaign to “stop hate for profit” that calls for people to stop buying Facebook & Instagram ads during July, and which has attracted several big players such as Unilever and Verizon. Some companies are leaving all social media ads, or are extending the Facebook boycott until the end of the year. But as the first article points out, Zuckerberg’s complete control of voting means he can’t be turfed by a board just to protect profit, so a short boycott may not be the best way to get change.
Facebook published a new explanation of how ads work on the platform.
STATS, DATA, OTHER TRACKING
For people who are new to Google Analytics: here are some things you should be tracking, as well as these, and some tips on finding source info for SEO work. If you want to improve your customers’ experience with the site, check out these tips. [There is some crossover between the 4 articles, but I think that those of you trying to learn more detailed examples of how GA works will find everything useful.]
What is a “session” in Google Analytics? This article includes screenshots & tips on changing their length.
You can get great keyword data from the Google Search Console - here’s how.
ECOMMERCE NEWS, IDEAS, TRENDS
Online shopping has received a huge boost from the pandemic lockdowns, and big online marketplaces are now competing for new small businesses to fill the growing demand. Walmart outsold eBay in May, for the first time ever. Things are slowing down a bit, though: “buy-online-pick-up-in-store (BOPIS) had begun to “plateau.” BOPIS growth in May was 195% year over year, which was down from its April peak of more than 200%.”
Amazon is being criticized for allowing many prohibited items to be sold on the site, even through “fulfilled by Amazon”, so the items are stored in its warehouses. “Graham did not respond directly to many of our specific questions, including how many of the banned items that The Markup found had been sold, why the company had not noticed some of them for months, why some were listed as Amazon’s Choice, and why many were stored in Amazon’s warehouses for shipment. He did not respond at all to questions about why Amazon itself had offered banned items for sale. Most of the banned listings we reported to Amazon have been removed, although at least three have popped back up.” [emphasis added]
Amazon is now offering multi-channel fulfillment in the US; you don’t even need to use Fulfillment by Amazon to sign up. They’ve also introduced lines of credit for sellers, through a partnership with Goldman Sachs.
eBay is rallying sellers to object to a proposed Louisiana law that would force marketplace sites to verify the identities of higher-volume sellers in the state. The law was passed anyway, and takes effect July 1. Here are the highlights of the new law.
Now-fired eBay employees harassed and stalked the EcommerceBytes owner and her husband for months after eBay’s CEO at the time said eBay needed to “take down” the site & its owner.
Walmart now has ThredUp as one of its third-party sellers on the Walmart website. They sell second-hand clothing and accessories for women & kids, often famous labels. Sales are all online but buyers will be able to return things to Walmart stores.
Walmart has also partnered with Shopify, allowing small businesses to list directly on Walmart’s website through Shopify. This appears to be a limited initiative, as they only plan on including 1200 Shopify sellers by the end of 2020. Most analysts think this is a plan to compete with Amazon more directly.
In addition to its existing website, Target is now offering items on Instagram Checkout.
Shopify has been getting great media coverage lately, including this article suggesting them as an alternative to Amazon third-party selling, once the new “Shop” app gets some traction.
BigCommerce has introduced drag-and-drop design tools for its website builder.
Square has begun using rolling reserves to reduce its risk with some sellers. “In one instance, Legal Knock, a company that builds websites for law firms, told the Times that it never had a customer demand a refund for their work and yet Square kept $4,000 in reserve in May. Sean Weber, the owner, said he had trouble contacting the company and wasn't satisfied with its explanation. He even said Square blocked him on Twitter.”
Upcoming PayPal changes for US users include seller protection for some digital items, and not necessarily requiring buyers to return items to win a significantly not as described case. Remember that many PayPal changes start with the US and then expand to other countries; Canadian changes are here.
BUSINESS & CONSUMER STUDIES, STATS & REPORTS; SOCIOLOGY & PSYCHOLOGY, CUSTOMER SERVICE
When thinking about customer returns, remember that a lower-than-average return rate is not necessarily your top goal. “You may ask, “why would a merchant want to increase returns?” It’s because they’re using returns as a growth driver. They’ve figured out, for their respective businesses, that a higher rate of returns actually nets out to an increase in sales and repeat purchasing. So much so, that the overall uptick in business far outweighs the increased costs of more frequent returns.”
Consumers are reading reviews more than ever, but half of this study’s respondents said that “‘too many companies’ are creating fake reviews online.”
Many people are tired of the “things are different” ads that have predominated, & want to see more ads showing people getting back to normal. “The U.S., U.K. and the Netherlands are primed for a jump in fashion purchases, with significant percentages of consumers in those countries planning clothing purchases in the next 30 days. The finding suggests that fashion marketers may increase their marketing efforts to reach consumers who are ready to buy apparel as lockdowns are lifted.”
We don’t know what the holiday shopping season will look like this year, so ecommerce businesses should be planning for many different scenarios.
Here’s an interesting overview of how some searches changed in the first few months of the pandemic. [infographic] And some of the shopping changes people made, especially Gen Z, may be permanent. “...younger consumers are shifting their habits faster than their older counterparts.” That report also states that “33% of these consumers have increased their online spending, for a net increase of 6%, versus 23% of consumers in older generations, or a net increase of 1%.”
Here’s more on the second-hand clothing trend that is hitting its boom years. “According to the report, secondhand goods are expected to make up 17% of a person’s share of closet space by 2029, up from just 3% in 2009.” Gen Z is a big user of Depop, which has a lot of altered and enhanced vintage clothing available.
MISCELLANEOUS
This article has inspired me to completely redo my website’s About page. Not yet, of course, but some day soon…
Speaking of websites, here’s a good list of dos & don’ts for a contact form.
eBay may be probing your computer when you visit, and that is not always legal.
Free Zoom accounts can’t set up encrypted calls/meetings, because “the firm wants to keep this feature away from free users to work with law enforcement in case of the app’s misuse.”
Finally in privacy news, Google is being sued for still tracking you in various ways when you use Chrome’s incognito mode.

Coffee Market Rallies to a 12-month High
November 2019 marked the first time in the last 12 months when the ICO Composite Indicator consistently stayed over 100 US cents/lb. The monthly average of the Indicator rose 10.1% to 107.23 US cents/lb amid expectations of a global deficit in coffee year 2019/20, estimated at 502,000 bags. Global exports of coffee in October 2019 fell by 13.4%, to 8.91 million bags, compared to the same month in the previous year. A mix of factors, including unfavourable weather patterns and prolonged low international prices, have contributed to a decline in shipments across all regions.
The ICO composite indicator rallied in November 2019, reaching a 12-month high, even as the Brazilian Real slumped to a record low against the US Dollar. The daily price of the ICO composite rose from 102.74 US cents/lb at the beginning of November to a high of 111.86 on 25 November 2019, before closing the month at 111.77 US cents/lb. While the daily price has been on an upward trend since mid-October 2019, the November average of 107.23 US cents/lb was 10.1% higher than last month.
Prices for all group indicators rose in November 2019. Brazilian Naturals saw the largest increase, of 12.1%, to 109.94 US cents/lb, reflecting in part the biennial decline in the production of Brazilian Arabica as well as the weakness of the Brazilian currency. Other Milds rose 11% to 140.98 US cents/lb, while Colombian Milds rose 10.6% to 146.12 US cents/lb. The differential between Colombian Milds and Other Milds continued its ascent in November 2019, rising 0.8% to 5.14 US cents/lb. Prices for Robustas increased 6.8% month-on-month to 73.28 US cents/lb.
Arbitrage between Arabica and Robusta coffees, as measured on the New York and London futures markets, increased sharply to 50.31 US cents/lb, its highest level since January 2017. The New York futures market rose 10.6%, to an average of 113.31 US cents/lb in November 2019, as certified stocks fell to their lowest level since June 2018, while the London futures market climbed 8% to 63 US cents/lb.
The volatility of the ICO composite indicator increased by 0.9 percentage points to 7.1% over the past month. Amongst the Arabica group indicators, the volatility of Colombian Milds saw the biggest increase—of 1.2 percentage points—to 7.2%, while the Other Milds’ and Brazilian Naturals’ volatility increased 0.8 percentage points to 6.9% and 1.1 percentage points to 9.2%, respectively. The Robustas group indicator registered an increase of one percentage point in its volatility, to 6.2%, due to uncertainties over the October-September crop and Brazil’s upcoming 2020/21 crop.
Global exports in October 2019 totalled 8.91 million bags, their lowest monthly level since September 2017. This represents a drop of 13.4% compared to the same period in the previous year, and of 2.4% compared to October 2017. Shipments of Robustas fell 21.6% to 2.82 million bags and Arabicas fell 9% to 6.08 million bags. Other Mild Arabicas saw the largest decline, falling 23.2% to 1.33 million bags, while Brazilian Naturals fell 9.5% to 3.44 million bags. Colombian Milds, conversely, saw an increase of 13.5% to 1.31 million bags compared to October 2018. The depreciation of the Colombian Peso against the US Dollar for much of 2019 could be a contributing factor for higher shipments of Colombian Milds.
Exports from South America amounted to 5.29 million bags in October 2019, led by 3.42 million bags from Brazil. Brazil’s exports—which accounted for 38.4% of the total coffee exports in October 2019—fell 12.9% compared to October 2018, owing to its smaller 2019/20 off-year crop. Despite the monthly fall in shipments compared to 2018, Brazil’s export total to date for its 2019/20 crop year is at a record level of 23.62 million bags. This is 7.2% greater than its next highest level of 22.04 million bags, reached in April–October 2014.
At 1.21 million bags, Colombian exports grew 13.9% in October 2019 compared to the same month in 2018. Green coffee exports rose 15.5% as the main harvest began, while the small but steadily growing volumes of roasted coffee exports grew 41.4% to 16,934 bags. Exports of soluble coffee fell 9.2% compared to October 2018. However, the year-to-date total of 672,791 bags was the second highest total of soluble exports for Colombia for the period. The United States continues to be the major destination for Colombian coffee, accounting for 44.8% of its October 2019 exports. It was followed by Germany, which accounted for 9.2% of the total coffee exports in the month.
Exports from Asia & Oceania fell by 23.5% to 2.26 million bags in October 2019. The decline chiefly reflects smaller shipments from Viet Nam, whose Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development estimated exports of 1.45 million bags for the month. The sharp fall in exports was accompanied by reports of farmers delaying sales of their beans due to low domestic prices for coffee. A decline in shipments was also observed in India, where production has been affected by erratic weather patterns, heavy rains and flooding for the past two years. Local reports have additionally attributed lower harvests to an increased incidence of the white stem borer earlier in the year. Exports from India were estimated at 350,000 bags in October 2019, 2.5% below the same period a year earlier and 22% below the same period in 2017. Meanwhile, exports from Indonesia—which had fallen in coffee year 2018/19 amid tightening supplies from Sumatra—more than doubled to 342,464 bags in October 2019.
Uganda’s exports of 378,238 bags led shipments from African countries, followed by Ethiopia. The total volume of exports from the region was 958,055 bags. In comparison with the same month in the previous year, Arabica exports from Uganda fell 30% to 75,501 bags, while Robusta exports rose by 24.6% to 302,737 bags. Exports of Arabica from Uganda have declined for most of 2019, dropping 16.6% in the first ten months compared to the same period in 2018. However, the increase in Robusta exports have more than offset the fall, and as a result total exports from the country increased 7.4% for the same period. The Uganda Coffee Development Authority attributed this increase to good main and secondary harvests on account of favourable weather in 2019.
With an export volume of 403,635 bags, Mexico & Central America started the coffee year with a 17.3% decline in shipments compared to October 2018. The region’s total exports were dragged down by falling shipments from Costa Rica, Honduras and Mexico. Honduras—which is Central America’s largest Arabica producer, and the world’s fourth largest—saw its shipments fall by 25.8% to 74,980 bags. Besides falling prices, harvests in the country are reported to have been affected by an increased incidence of pests and diseases, as well as an ongoing drought that led to the declaration of a national emergency in September. Elsewhere in the region, Costa Rica’s shipments dropped by 66.2%, to 11,853 bags, which was its lowest monthly export volume since August 1980. The fall is expected to continue into November 2019 as the country reels from a recent outbreak of coffee leaf rust.
The ICO maintains its preliminary forecast of a small global deficit of about 502,000 bags in coffee year 2019/20. Despite a slowdown in growth, consumption is predicted to overtake production during the course of the year. Most of the growth in consumption, in both absolute and relative terms, is expected to come from Asia & Oceania. On the production side, Brazil’s smaller off-year Arabica crop and adverse weather in parts of Central America and Asia could continue to affect prices in the coming weeks. However, the impact of these factors may be muted due to the recent weakness of the Brazilian Real as well as the upcoming on-year crop in Brazil.

Agricultural Adjuvants Market Worth $4.7 Billion by 2027, Growing at a CAGR of 5.7% from 2020 - Exclusive Report by Meticulous Research® Covering Emerging Growth Factors, Latest Trends and Forecasts, and Pre and Post COVID-19 Estimates
According to the research report titled “Agricultural Adjuvants Market by Function (Activator, Utility), Application (Herbicide, Insecticide, Fungicide), Formulation (Suspension Concentrates, Emulsifiable Concentrates), Adoption Stage (Tank-Mix, In-Formulation), Crop Type – Global Forecast to 2027”, published by Meticulous Research®, agricultural adjuvants market is projected to reach $4.7 billion by 2027, at a CAGR of 5.7% from 2020. Also, in terms of volume, the agricultural adjuvants market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.3% from 2020 to 2027 to reach 440.1 KT by 2027. Growing food demand and shrinking arable land, increasing demand for agrochemicals, increasing adoption of precision farming methods, and growing need to limit pesticide wastage are the primary growth drivers for this market. In addition, adjuvants for biological products, the growing consumer preference for environment-friendly agricultural adjuvants, and drift potential of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with adjuvants in aerial applications provide significant opportunities for manufacturers in the agricultural adjuvants market.

The world’s human population has increased nearly fourfold in the past 100 years, and it is projected to reach 9.2 billion by 2050. In addition, farmland per capita in 2030 is expected to decrease to 1800m² from 2,200m² in 2005. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), a United Nations agency, the global arable land was reduced by nearly 0.8 million square kilometers during 2000–2015. This shrinking cultivable land and increasing demand for food are creating the need for the optimum utilization of the existing farmlands. Making it worse are the various crop pests that are causing 10-16% of the global crop losses annually. This is leading to advancements in technology and the use of agrochemicals to maximize the output from the existing farmlands.
Nowadays, the agriculture industry is rapidly swinging towards advancements in traditional farming practices. Growing demand for agrochemicals subsequently increases the use of agriculture adjuvants. They play a vital role in improving the effectiveness of these crop protection products to eliminate pests and insects. Apart from improving the efficiency of various agrochemicals, agricultural adjuvants are also used to boost agricultural productivity and multiply the yield capacity of farms. Therefore, the factors such as growing population, coupled with the rise in the use of advanced pesticides, lead to the growth of the agrochemicals industry globally, which subsequently drives the growth of the agriculture adjuvants market.
The agricultural adjuvants market is mainly segmented based on function, application, formulation, adoption stage, crop type, and geography. The study also evaluates industry competitors and analyses the market at a country level.
Impact of COVID-19 on the Agricultural Adjuvants Market
The COVID-19 pandemic has adversely hit many economies around the world. Combat measures like complete lockdown and quarantine to fight COVID-19 have had a strong adverse impact on many industries globally, including a portion of the agriculture industry such as crop protection chemicals and other additives. Over a few months, this crisis has directly impacted agricultural adjuvant's development rate as chemical manufacturing units in many countries have been disrupted.
In the agriculture sector, the agricultural crop protection chemicals and adjuvants market have registered a slowdown in sales in the first quarter of 2020 due to the disruption in logistics and transportation. Along with logistics and transportation, the agrochemicals and agricultural adjuvants market has registered interruptions in the sector's entire value chain from raw materials supply to manufacturing, packaging, and distribution. This is, however, causing an imbalance between the demand and supply quantities on a large scale. Though, some regions are completely dependent on imports and are facing tough situations.
Speak to our Analysts to Understand the Impact of COVID-19 on Your Business: https://www.meticulousresearch.com/speak-to-analyst/cp_id=5112
Adjuvants are majorly dependent on raw materials such as vegetable oils and petroleum for their production. The turbulences in the regular supply chain have caused the companies to create new supply chains that are more expensive and take a lot more time to satisfy the need for catalysts in different chemical industry areas, seeing an unprecedented degree of activity associated with biotechnology. All these factors hampered the potential growth of the market at the beginning of 2020. At the same time, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has acknowledged that the spread of COVID- 19 is sinking in a few countries and regions of the world. It is still resurging or spreading quickly in some other countries such as the U.S., Korea, Brazil, and India.
Key Findings in the Agricultural Adjuvants Market Study:
Based on function, the activator adjuvants segment commanded the dominant share of the overall agricultural adjuvants market. The dominant position of this segment is primarily due to its capability to reduce surface tension to enhance contact area as well as rain fastness and increase solubilization and spray retention. Moreover, the global agricultural activator adjuvants market is further segmented into surfactants and oil adjuvants.
Based on application, the overall agricultural adjuvants market is mainly segmented into herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and other applications. The herbicides segment commanded the dominant share of the overall agricultural adjuvants market. The dominant position of this segment is mainly attributed to the rising demand for herbicidal products to protect against crop failure and enhance agricultural production.
Based on formulation, the global agricultural adjuvants market is mainly segmented into suspension and emulsifiable concentrates. The suspension concentrates segment commanded the dominant share of the overall agricultural adjuvants market. The dominant position of this segment is mainly attributed to its increasing demand due to the wide range of benefits such as the absence of dust and small particle size of the active ingredients that minimize environmental risks, ease of use, and high effectiveness.

Rising Metaverse Game Pairs Ethereum NFTs With Retro 16-Bit Look
In brief
Worldwide Webb, an Ethereum-based online metaverse game, has seen rising sales and prices for digital NFT apartments.
Unlike many metaverse games with 3D environments and avatars, Worldwide Webb features 2D pixel worlds and characters.
When most people think of the metaverse, they imagine immersive 3D worlds—whether it’s Ethereum-based games like Decentraland or The Sandbox, or Facebook’s vision that taps into VR and AR headsets.
Worldwide Webb is decidedly different in approach, with a throwback 2D pixel aesthetic—and digital land sales are surging.
Designed like a massively multiplayer online version of a Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis game environment, Worldwide Webb is an Ethereum-powered PC game built around NFTs. Players can purchase apartments of varying shapes and sizes in the world, for example, and will be able to customize the locales to share with friends and online communities.
But users can also bring in the NFTs that they already own. Since launching in November, Worldwide Webb has added support for a variety of NFT avatars, such as CryptoPunks, Cool Cats, and CrypToadz. That means that players can connect an Ethereum wallet and then explore the pixel world using their owned NFT profile picture.
With its retro look, Worldwide Webb stands apart from much of the competition. But amid rising overall metaverse hype and its growing integration for avatar projects, Worldwide Webb’s profile has similarly risen of late—and so have its NFT land prices.
Worldwide Webb has seen the floor price—or cheapest asset listed on a secondary marketplace—of its apartment (or land) NFTs surge 142% over the last seven days to 3.6 ETH, or about $9,530 as of this writing.
Zoomed out further, the entry-level price has risen 188% over the past 30 days, per data from NFT Price Floor. Blockchain analytics firm DappRadar tweeted today that the floor price for a “large apartment” NFT in the game has risen 3,183% since December 14, when the site profiled Worldwide Webb for the first time.
Amid rising overall prices for NFT land parcels in the game, Worldwide Webb also logged its highest-ever single NFT sale earlier this morning, with a penthouse selling for 70 ETH, or more than $190,000 at the time of purchase.
Two other penthouses have been sold over the last day, at prices of 60 ETH ($163,535) and 59.59 ETH ($162,376) apiece, per data from CryptoSlam. All told, land in Worldwide Webb has generated $9.2 million in trading volume over the last week, and nearly $57 million to date.
Digital land plots in metaverse games have seen significant demand in recent months, particularly since Facebook rebranded its parent company to Meta in October while laying out its own vision for the space.
The Sandbox, Decentraland, Portals, Somnium Space, and other metaverse game platforms have collectively generated hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of NFT land sales since then, including more than $100 million worth in a single week in late November.
An NFT acts like a deed of ownership to a unique digital item, whether it’s images, video files, or interactive elements in video game worlds.
Such blockchain-based games are seen as the first step toward the wider evolution of the metaverse, a future vision of a more immersive, avatar-driven internet. In such a future, users will socialize, play, and work in interconnected, interoperable online spaces, and use owned NFT assets for things like avatars, accessories and customizable home spaces.
