Reviewing the All Elite Wrestling personnel 2023 Edition (Part 1) -

General statistics (taken from https://www.allelitewrestling.com/aew-roster as of 01/10/23) -

For this first part I decided to take everyone’s overall record and calculate with a little adjustments as outlined below:

+2 points for a win -1 point for a loss +1 point for every 3 matches (leftovers will be 0.3 or 0.6) 0 for draws Tiebreakers will be decided if possible (former champions, number of matches, being on the 1st year list, and such) Non-AEW Accomplishments not regarded (this includes ROH Titles) Some Faction definitions are refined by personal choice Career Records only

This doesn’t factor in jobbers or people off this list and have no wins let alone official records. This also doesn’t take into account promo skills or how long they’ve been in the company. I’ve tiered it in terms of every ‘tens’ such as those with a score of 20-29.6 or 30-39.6 to illustrate a sort of 'group’ these wrestlers sit in. It’s clearly not perfect but it does highlight how higher positives scores should fair against lower positive scores when matched up, especially champions. Don’t take it too seriously of course - it’s something I like to dabble in for the sake of my own curiousity and amusement. There is some truth to it though. Just think of it as a ballpark reason to how AEW is promoting certain people and trying to instill credibility into their tenure. Onwards!

Republican-era China: 1930s style and swag and even some boogying. It starts out looking like it’s going to be a family drama, but quickly gains murderous edges. O_O

It covers emotional abuse and gaslighting. It shows a woman who sticks to her convictions even when the world is against her. It shows a world where children belong to the one who births them. It has epic 1930s spy movie vibes.And yes, the lesbians both get a happy ending.

It’s on Youtube and Amazon Prime. It is a must-see.

Best Independent News re: China

Guys, I love the news site What's On Weibo. I use it to keep up with the larger mind of Chinese society and where it's at. How they feel about their government's handling of "Zero Covid" lockdowns. The events in Tangshan where several women were beaten by men in a restaurant, and how netizens reacted. What shows and movies are big hits right now.

Everything from the heavy to the light, current news to social movements to entertainment.

I particularly like that their articles are about the people, not the government. You get the broader view, seeing how the people aren't a homogenous group agreeing with the PRC, but rather a patchwork of many beliefs and views and thoughts and voices.

I highly recommend What's On Weibo to other international fans of Chinese culture, entertainment, etc.. They're one of my favorite independent news orgs that has reliable info about China, and which lacks the typical Western bias against all things Chinese.

Personally, I'm a very satisfied reader. They're currently free of outside influence--no political or commercial groups funding them, no larger news org controlling them. They're looking for independent funding from readers so they can continue in that vein.

Anyone interested in supporting independent coverage of China, look no further :)

The "cool girl" Liu Yuxin

I emerged from a haze of doctors' appointments (seeing medical specialists every 5.3 days for the last 2 months and yes I looked at my calendar and then used a calculator to figure that out STOP LOOKING AT ME LIKE THAT)--to watch the first episode of SDC season 5!

I'm using the method of watching the non-subbed full episode and the subbed talking-only bits simultaneously, switching back and forth between them on my computer. Which sucks, yes, but the Youku app didn't work for me. The talking-only portion isn't actually all of the talking, which sucks further. I'll rewatch when the full subbed episode is available.

I cracked up when Liu Yuxin talked about being apparently "cold" and unreactive.

Just like Yibo has been accused of in the past, lol! A bland smile, or no expression at all, that's her default. She's very calm and level about things. I like that about her a lot.

Of course, being told you're not emotive lands very differently for a woman* than for a man. Luckily, they don't make a big/gendered deal of it, just some light ribbing from the interviewer/editing team--no different than we've seen Yibo get for his same lack of effusion.

*I'm using woman and she/her for her because that's what she goes by in entertainment circles. In her personal life, she may be an androgynous woman or she may identify as nonbinary, I don't know. But that's the thing: I don't know. I don't want to make assumptions of queerness (although maybe we ought, since we make assumptions of straightness and cisness all the time).

Just like Yibo, of course, she has her moments of surprising emotion. When she sees a particularly awesome move, for example. She's very cool and I'm a little in love with her.

Daisy help me please. Is Simon Johns PR related to/ under Sony? Like Columbia is a sub company I mean…

I am asking because the other day he tweeted Bigger Than Me promo and I am still trying to process WHY.. I had thought with walls era ending and BMG coming in to the picture, Louis’ former team is now done. Including Simon J.

Now I am wondering if the stuff around this single and Louis right now is another illusion (like how Harry was shown as “free” with HS1 dropping).

Is BMG the managing company or just a distributor for FITF?? (Because I feel like their method of promo is more the type of a distributor than a management company). You know what I mean?

Simon Johns PR is a PR company - they have been the publicity company Louis has used for years. I believe they also did 1D PR back in the day, and they worked with many Syco artists.

That is a separate thing from a record label. Columbia is a record label under Sony Music. Harry has PR companies he works with for his own PR.

All artists also have in-label PR, so Louis benefits from BMG PR, and has Simon Jones for things outside label-related activities.

I don't know why Louis still works with SJ PR, it could be due to an ongoing contract or perhaps his team likes working with that firm, since they've worked with them for several years.

BMG is a record label. That's separate from a management company. Louis' management company is still the same, Seven 7 Management and Three Six Zero Group. They're what makes up Louis' team.

BMG is a record label, and they have a deal with Louis for production, distribution, licensing and marketing. His music is published under his own record label, 78 Productions, so he owns the rights to it, and BMG has exclusive distribution rights to his music, same deal Harry has (his record label is Erskine Records).

So, 3 separate things:

Pokemon Card of the Day Schedule: Crimson Invasion

The focus of Crimson Invasion, at least for marketing, was the new Ultra Beast Pokemon. These mostly functioned like anything else (with the GX versions having the same rules as other Pokemon-GX and regular versions, seen in later sets, as any other Pokemon) with the exception of being noted on the card as being Ultra Beasts and therefore working with a few specific cards. The stand-out among these, at least in Crimson Invasion, was Buzzwole-GX, which made it into quite a few decks featuring the rather impressive Fighting-type. Kartana-GX saw a bit of play as well for simply being able to take a Prize once per game.

The rest of the pool of cards wasn’t the deepest, but was still notable. Pokemon such as Silvally-GX and Regigigas saw some play. The best Trainer was likely Counter Catcher, which was a forced switch if behind on Prizes and worked especially well in slower decks. Those decks also might have use for Counter Energy, which was functionally 2 Rainbow Energy when behind but only worked on things that weren’t Pokemon-EX or Pokemon-GX. Crimson Invasion was probably one of the weakest sets of the Sun & Moon Era, but even it had several notable cards and a solid group of cards behind that which could work from time to time.

There were many small independent record labels that flourished in the years following World War 2. They were usually run by savvy business men who saw opportunity in the market place and sought to meet consumer demand. While some labels, such as Chess, Atlantic and Sun became internationally famous, others were less well known. Though not as celebrated as some other "indies", King Records in Cincinnati stands out as one of the most unique and best labels of the era. The owner of the company was Syd Nathan, who got his start in the record business by buying used 78's from Jukebox operators and selling them out of a small shop. The store was in a mostly black neighborhood, so Syd stocked records that would appear to the locals........blues, gospel and jazz. Soon, he had the opportunity to buy out another store owner. In the deal Syd would get the racks and listening booths from the other merchant, as well as a deal on his record stock. Most of the records sold in the deal were hillbilly music, something Syd was unfamiliar with. It didn't take long for him to discover that hillbilly was a lucrative market, thanks in no small part to the local barn dance radio show, The Boone County Jamboree. In 1943, Nathan decided to start his own label, which would give him a chance to record the local talent he was hearing on the radio.

At first things didn't go well, as inferior pressings made the records unlistenable. At that point, he made a fateful decision. He would press his own records, print the labels and also distribute the finished product. The self sufficient operation allowed Nathan to records, press and get records to the local stores in record time. It also gave him an additional income source by avoiding middle men. Rhythm and blues and country were his focus, believing that those genres were neglected by other labels. The first act he recorded was The Sheppard Brothers, who were actually hillbilly radio faves Merle Travis and Grandpa Jones. By the time the war ended, Syd was recording several highly talented country acts. In addition to Jones, he now had Hank Penny, The Delmore Brothers, Hawkshaw Hawkins, Moon Mullican and Cowboy Copas, who gave King it's first big hit. "Filipino Baby" dated back to the Spanish American War, but was easily updated for the times. The record hit the country top five, and opened the door for Copas, who would score one hit after another in the late forties. On the R&B side, Nathan had a substantial hit with blues shouter Wynonie Harris, whose cover of Roy Brown's "Good Rockin' Tonight" was a top seller in 1947.

Syd encouraged his artists to record each others song, using genre swapping as a way to integrate the audiences. Harris would cover Hank Penny's "Bloodshot Eyes", and bluesman Bullmoose Jackson would have a hit with Wayne Raney's "Why Don't You Haul Off and Love Me." Over time, the country music gave way to more R&B, as Nathan acquired the New Orleans Label Deluxe, and signed R&B promo man Ralph Bass. Great R&B vocal groups became staples on Nathan's now multi-label strategy. One subsidiary was Federal Records, where such great harmony groups like The Dominoes, The Five Royales, and The Midnighters enjoyed hits. It was also on the Federal side that Nathan found his biggest star, one whose music he originally called "crap." James Brown and The Famous Flames debuted in 1956 with "Please Please Please." He would continue to pump out hits for Syd until the labels demise, including the 1963 landmark LP "James Brown at the Apollo." After Syd's death in 1968, the label was sold to Gusto Records, a group that was often careless with it's legacy. Over the years, Syd Nathan and King Records faded from into distant memory, with only it's  abandoned downtown Cincy building to serve as a reminder of the glory days.

Listed: Dr. Pete Larson

Dr. Pete Larson runs Dagoretti Records now, he’s gotten there by an unusually long and winding road. Earlier in his career, Larson fronted 25 Suaves and Couch and ran BULB records. He also trained as an epidemiologist and spent time in Kenya studying the transmission of malaria. While in Kenya, he developed an interest in a lute-like eight-stringed instrument called a nyatiti and studied it with the master player Oduor Nyagweno. All these interests collide in a striking first album from Dr. Pete Larson and His Cytotoxic Nyatiti Band, where the nyatiti “cuts through a haze of electric rock distortion, pinging rhythmically and restlessly against floating euphorias of ululating vocals,” per Jennifer Kelly’s review. Here he lists some favorites from several continents.

I have been asked to create one of these lists for Dusted and here’s what I came up with. Making these lists is kind of difficult. I have a hard time remembering what I’ve been listening to at any moment, but here is a collection of old and new that get frequent airplay in my home. I play a Kenyan lyre, so this heavily leans toward lyre and harps and East African music in general, with some other choice cuts thrown in.

Musicians Of The National Dance Company Of Cambodia — Homrong (Real World Records)

I think I got this record (CD) back in the early 90s when I was selling music to Caroline Records. A friend sent me a box of CD promos, most of which wasn’t very interesting, but fortunately, this one was included. I don’t really know anything about Cambodian music, but for some reason, this collection of mid-tempo Cambodian court jamz plays every couple of months. Lots of weird sort of lurching rhythms and chorus singing with an erhu like instrument over it. A great listen.

Maleem Mahmoud Ghania w/ Pharoah Sanders — Trance of the Seven Colors

The Trance Of Seven Colors by Maleem Mahmoud Ghania w/ Pharoah Sanders

Trance inducing this is. Maleem Mahmoud Ghania is (was) one of the 20th century masters of Moroccan Gnawa music, a sort of spiritual, bass-heavy, rolling kind of music of Morocco. Any recording by Maleem Mahmoud is going to impress, but this mash of up of Gnawa with the great Pharoah Sanders is another level. If you are familiar with Gnawa music, it is a little disorienting to hear Sanders howl over the slow burn trance jamz but you are quickly drawn into what a perfect matchup this ended up being. Released on CD in the 90s, it fortunately has finally gotten a proper vinyl release.

Momoyama Harue — “Lullaby for the mother demon’s baby” (桃山晴衣* ‎– 鬼の女の子守唄)

I was playing the shamisen for a while (a three stringed lute from Japan) and found Momoyama Harue as part of my research. Shamisen is kind of a folky instrument for drinking parlors and entertainment of old Japan. The instrument and the music was nearly dead but saw a revival in the 1960s, similar to folk revivals in the US that brought the banjo back. Momoyama, however, was kind of an outlier, more arty than folky, and more poetry than song. Rather than box the music in an imagined past or try to hopelessly smash it into amplified rock music, she pushed it forward, blending it with ambient synth along with Indian and Middle Eastern musics. One of her best collaborations was with the great Egyptian oud player Hamza el Din that was nearly dead until the 1960s. All of the songs on this record are haunting (as the title suggests), but these tracks with el Din are truly singular. I have been searching for a vinyl copy of this record for years; one day I’ll get lucky.

I spent several years in Kenya learning to play the nyatiti, an eight stringed lyre historically played by a group of people in an area around Lake Victoria. I also spent time collecting records, searching for hours in dusty boxes for Kenyan traditional music records. One of my best finds was at Jimmy’s Records in Kenyatta Markets, this record by the great Nairobi based nyatiti player Lucas Odote. The traditional form of Taarab music is something to be experienced. Taarab music comes from the Arab coast of East Africa, and is this fantastic mix of local feel and Arab sounds, overlapped with heart wrenching songs of lost love and longing. I think there are some foreigners involved in this production, but this is an excellent document of Taarab music at its best.

G-master is a friend of mine from Kenya and one of the best humans I know. We recorded this in his kitchen in Nairobi with just a couple of mics over dinner. G is a cool guy. You should listen to his music.

Yagi is another Japanese musician who specializes in what one would think is a “traditional” instrument, but who brings much more to the table than one would expect. Yagi is a koto player by training. You have probably heard koto in the background music for scenes of Japan in American movies. The version you hear there is mostly lifeless and flat, kind of like a plastic chair in the corner. Yagi, however, plays the 17 string bass koto, invented in the 1920s or so, to try and give new life to the instrument. Yagi creates weird percussive, dissonant music that I can’t really get enough of.

Asnakech Worku was a lot of things; pioneer, actress, but most notably a female Krar player. Certainly there might have been other female Krar players in Ethiopia at the time, but Krar players are mostly men. The Krar is a lyre from Ethiopia, mostly played with one hand, though there are several playing styles out there. Worku plays haunting sounds on her Krar on this record, backed up by famous Ethiopian keyboardist Hailu Mergia, who really needs no intro.

Ogola Opot — “Domtila Ogola”

This will probably be the only 78 on this list. Ogola Opot is considered the grandfather of the Kenyan nyatiti, coming to prominence in the 1960s and 70s, and creating the genre we know as Siaya style “traditional nyatiti.” If someone asks me what nyatiti music sounds like, this is probably where I would have people start. I include this first because it is a great record and second because it was my holy grail for a while (though I always have new holy grails) and managed to find a pristine copy for sale from a place in France recently. I am not going to say how much I paid for it.
