With the disclaimers that (1) I’ve never seen the play Wicked and so don’t know any differences between that and the movie and (2) I really need to rewatch the movie because I liked it but was heavily distracted the first time by differences from the book I read again just a couple months ago:

Although the plot and world is vastly different, most of the main characters do still have their most recognizable traits. Glinda is privileged and selfish and desperate to be recognized as worthy. Elphaba is a social outcast who is academically inclined, used to being responsible, and pretending very hard that she doesn’t care about being liked. Nessarose is pampered and cared for to the point that she sees it as the natural order of things. But Fiyero doesn’t seem to share anything but a name and that really threw me off. Book!Fiyero is a Black prince, very polite and a little quiet, seen as exotic by his classmates who (before befriending him) are both overtly racist and fascinated by his completely different culture. Movie!Fiyero could have been borrowed from any 2000’s teen movie, as the typically white handsome loud charming popular and a little obnoxious obvious love interest. Which is funny because, other than not actually being the love interest, that character exists in the book. His name is Avaric and everyone gets tired of his bullshit really fast
