Water Filters under $20

Over the weekend we bought some things for our kits. A nalgene bottle, a GSI Glacier stainless steel cup, a Sawyer Mini water filter and, the Sawyer Squeeze water filter.

We have taken a while to figure out the best water filtration system that fits our criteria. We wanted a water filter that had high capabilities in terms of gallons it is able to process before requiring a new filter, one that could filter out harmful bacteria, was lightweight, and one that could give us the most for our buck on a budget. With the Sawyer water filters we believe we have found it.

The Sawyer Mini is capable of filtering 100,000 gallons at .1 micron (which makes it nearly impossible for bacteria, protozoa, or cysts to pass through). It weighs 2oz and can be used four ways.  1) Attached it to a reusable squeeze pouch (which is included with the filter), and you can drink directly from the pouch or squeeze the water from the pouch into another water container such as a water bottle. 2) It can be attached to most water or soda bottles, and drank directly from those bottles. 3) Attach it inline to a hydration pack without any adapters. 4) Use the drinking straw (which is also included) to drink directly from the source, or scoop up with a bottle of water from lakes, rivers, steams etc. To clean it, you simply backwash it with a syringe (also included). As far as costs go, we bought the Sawyer Mini for 24.99! However, I have since found it on Amazon for 20.00! So depending on where you buy it, you may pay between $20-$25.

The Sawyer Squeeze is a bigger version of the Sawyer Mini. It is capable of filtering a whopping 1 MILLION gallons of water at .1 micron, and comes weighing in at 3oz! This is perhaps the lightest filter with the highest filtering capabilities I have yet to find. A 1L squeeze pouch and cleaning syringe is included. The only difference between the Squeeze and the Mini (apart from weight) is that; a straw is not included with the squeeze. You would also have to buy adapter pieces for the squeeze if you want to use it inline with a hydration pack. We bought the Squeeze for $49.99.

Comparing the Mini and Squeeze, I would say that for those looking to get the most for their money, the Squeeze is the better buy. You would need ten Mini to be able to filter as much water as the Squeeze. I think it is also safe to say that with proper maintenance we will not need a filter for a very long time.

If anyone knows of another filter that can compete with these in terms of weight, price, gallons it can filter, and at the same micron level, let me know.
