@theharellan​ asked: How did Nalaea come into a leadership role? Did she want to take over when Alistair fell apart after Ostagar? Does she do any research (either in accessible books or perhaps via companions with leadership experience like Sten) in how to successfully command or did she wing it? Is she comfortable with it now or does she never quite get used to it? And also what's her style, what tactics does she favour for a unit?

She came into a leadership role with her companions slowly over time. Since she severely lacked experience, it was very awkward and heavy on her for others to quickly see her as a leader. She didn’t want to take that position from Alistair--she never saw herself as the leader type, she was always the reckless one--nor did she really want to be a leader in the first place. She just...made it work until she got more confident and got more trusting to be able to be a proper leader. Nalaea found it easier to work as a team in the beginning, with everyone having an equal say in matters. It wasn’t just on one person to guide them; everyone got involved in every step of their journey.

It wasn’t until after gaining the support of the Circle of Magi that she actually started to willingly command. Although she’ll say it was all her winging it, she equally relies on what she’s learned from Sten and Wynne as she does just going with what feels right. Those two really helped develop her skills. Nalaea learns better from listening to others and doing things herself, so she had to slowly work on becoming an effective leader to them all. By the time they were going to head to Orzammar, she felt confident enough to actually take over for good.

Nalaea isn’t entirely used to it, but she’s grown to accept that this is what she’s supposed to be. She’s put her all into it. Even as Warden-Commander of Ferelden, she observes other leaders, asking questions to better serve the Wardens under her command. Her tactics change depending on the group she’s leading. She utilized democratic leadership with her companions during the Blight so they all have a voice in her decisions. That’s how it’s been since the beginning, so she found that it was easier to implement. She listened to their concerns before she made her decisions, making sure everyone’s voice was heard and actually considered as a viable option.

That becomes more difficult when she’s commanding all of the Ferelden Wardens, so she shifts her approach to a blend of democratic and transformational--where she pushes those under her command a little more with each task to grow as people and Wardens. She still desires to have their voice heard, but she’s also trying to make the Wardens grow. She had to take on an approach to allow for Wardens of all ranks to grow and improve themselves, while still having a hand in what’s going on with the organization.

I’m going to break these up on purpose to put the former under a read more ( just to be on the safe side! ). I want to note that even though I did romance someone in her playthrough, that doesn’t mean I’ll force a ship on anyone. If I ever do ship with people, I want us to have talked it through and mutually agree on it! This will stick to general discussions of the two topics in her life!

For romance, she used In her youth, she would hope to find someone to walk through life with, to find happiness and love like what her parents found in each other. Although it was short, there was no denying that Adaia and Cyrion loved each other. However, Nalaea was raised knowing she would never be able to completely give her heart to someone because the day would come that she’d be arranged to marry another. A friendship and/or love would grow with time during their marriage...if it ever did. That didn’t stop her from trying love. She had a few lovers in her teens, but she made sure never to entirely put her heart into it to be able to walk away to whomever her father chose for her to marry.

After becoming a Grey Warden, Nalaea’s even less receptive to romance. She doesn’t trust anyone--not fully, anyways. She doesn’t want to get too close to people out of fear of them stabbing her in the back, to protect them from herself in many ways. She’ll scare people off by sharing her life’s story, with how lost she feels after her wedding and Ostagar. She’s angry, but broken. Vengeful, but grieving the loss of friends, acquaintances, and strangers. She’s terribly broken and she keeps those parts of her locked deep down, where very few have access. She’s scared of chasing people away by getting close to them, loving them, so she tends to stray from romance when approached with the chance. It is possible to get her to open up with time and she’s more willing to try if they spend a lot of time together and she trusts them, but at the moment, she’s focused on the Blight.

Sex is easier than romance for her. She’s not ashamed of wanting it or seeking it out. It’s a common thing for people to want; she sees no reason to not seek out that thrill. In a way, it’s something that makes her alive despite all the death that surrounds her and her partner.

At first, Nalaea could pair sex and romance together. You could have one, you could have the other, you could even have both at the same time with the same person. If you love someone, they could be the only one you want to be with in mind, body, and soul. But that was a naive thought, for a girl who didn’t know the full extent of how much life can fuck you over, especially if you’re an elf. Sex is just sex. You can grab a drink, fuck without thinking or feeling too much into it, then go about your day. Romance is much harder, requires a level of trust that she isn’t ready to give out so easily.

Where before she was willing to pair the two together, she sees romance and sex as separate entities. You can have one without the other. One’s easy, natural and the other...will take time for her to grow as a person before she feels comfortable enough to trust someone with all the bad shit she’s been through. Nalaea consistently chooses sex over romance, especially during the Blight. She’s stressed out, angry, grieving, feeling broken despite fooling others to believe nothing’s wrong at all. She’s able to find a partner to ignore those emotions for a night.

i’d just like to say that even though nalaea’s feelings on having a family are complicated, she does like being around kids. she’s seen so many orphans on her travels and it absolutely kills her. she does what she can for them. especially when the wardens are settled in amaranthine. giving them money to buy food and clothes, offering them shelter for the night. she’ll even run around and play with them, like she did with kids in the alienage
