Connor is/was a mage being taught under Pierro when he was a royal mage in Khaenri'ah. Being visionless didn't mean Connor couldn't be powerful in Teyvat and the mages in Khaenri'ah had powers rivaling visions.

Connor is Pierro's protégé.

The mermaid was in Khaenri'ah when it fell. The horrors and betrayal he saw there broke something inside of him.

Connor escaped and was lucky since he isn't a naturally born Khaenri'ah.

Leaving out of the door in Sumeru Connor was actually there to witness Amrita's sacrifice for the protection of Irminsil. Being a child of the ocean, hydro he wept for the death of his archon and Amrita comforted him in her dying breaths and as her dying wish tasked him to return the gnosis to Fontaine.

Connor had the hydro gnosis in his possession and was founded by Pierro after the fallout and the old mage wanted to take the gnosis to begin revenge plans but Connor wants to return it to Fontaine's waters. The two got in a fight and Connor knew he was outmatched so retreated.

Connor ultimately lost the gnosis on his way back to Fontaine, in fact it was incredibly easy for someone to take it from him after narrowly escaping a fight with one of teyvat's most powerful mages, all easy for a stowaway Pari to snatch it and declare herself the new hydro archon

Furina is a Pari, the small and haughty species fits

Since Connor knows the truth she alienated the entire mermaid species when she became archon and this was one of the first frictions between her and the oceanids since the oceanids have worked with mermaids for centuries

Connor wants to still return the gnosis to the sea
