From Here- Cloud None- Single
I’ve created a casual art club with a few friends of mine, and one of the many things we discussed was Synesthesia, at my suggestion of course. Everyone agreed to try it out as an indivisible project. We each found a song and took a vote on which we liked best, which was coincidentally also my suggestion. This is the largest of all my Synesthesia pieces, and took the longest time to complete.
Usually I have very distinct visions, even if it is just colors and moving shapes. I knew which colors I would use right away, as well as the rain and city street elements, but struggled with the composition. The vision I had would change between listens and it got to be very frustrating to pin one down as The Vision.

Apparitions- The Raveonettes- Raven in the Grave
I don’t have much to say about this one, as, upon listening to the song, my resulting vision is fairly self-explanatory. This is another of my favorites in the entire project.

New York- Refs- Now EP (versions 3 and 1)
A song can look different over time. The first few times I listened, the vision was completely abstract, only colors and fluid shapes. I had a second vision for this track but I haven’t yet painted it. The third vision is the most “recognizable” with very few if any abstract elements. Now when I hear “New York” I see an odd blend of all three of my previous visions. The third version is my favorite of the three, and one of my favorites in this project overall.
Top, version 3: acrylic paint and chrome marker on 8x10 canvas board, appx 5 hours
Bottom, version 1: acrylic paint, alcohol ink, glitter paint, chrome marker, and gloss medium on 3x4 canvas board, appx 1.5 hours

You Should Be Sad- Halsey- Manic
This one is chaotic and messy. In the song, the intensity and tone of the music and lyrics shift a few times, moving from somewhat calm to strong and determined. It’s a song about a failed relationship and the thoughts and emotions that go with that.
I was sexually assaulted around the same time I first heard this. I clearly remember playing on a loop at max volume as I drove away, sobbing. The line “Just glad I made it out without breaking down and ran so fucking far/ That you will never, ever, touch me again,” is powerful, especially after what happened to me.
It was extremely intense and cathartic to work on this piece. It’s not 100% what the vision was, so I may try again.

Forever (is a Long Time)- Halsey- Manic
Sometimes I’ll “see” more than just colors or abstract shapes. It’s not quite enough to be a full image; Imagine looking at a person through frosted glass or an unfocused camera; it’s like that. Many, if not most, songs are pretty consistent with how they “look”, but this one changes tone and tempo a few times, which breaks it into more distinct “chunks”. I’ve included time stamps for each chunk, as well as photos of each panel on its own. Of all of these, either the second or fourth are my favorites. It took three attempts to get the first panel right.
Acrylic paint, paint pens, chrome pen on 4x3 canvas boards, appx 6 hours of work.

The xx- Lips- XX (Bonus Track Version)
As one might imagine, it’s difficult to convey abstract concepts in a physical way. This is an example of “close, but not quite”. This is the very basic, bare bones of what “Lips” by the group The XX sounds like to me. I’m planning on trying this one again; so far it’s what I consider the “worst” attempt at recreating my vision.
Acrylic paint on 3x4 inch canvas board, about half an hour of work.

So I was going to delete this page but decided not to. I’ve been neglecting my art for a few months and maybe having a place to keep it will encourage me to keep creating.

I’d like to get a little more in-depth regarding how my synesthesia works and affects me, in an attempt to help you understand my work.
I’m very color-oriented. Objects, places, people, sounds, music, and sometimes even stories have colors.
Some examples:
Whenever someone says or I read the word “scissors”, the color orange comes to mind, every single time.
The city of Seoul, South Korea (where I lived for two years as a child), is a deep forest green with splashes of white and yellow.
My mother is purple. My husband is red. I’m a cyan blue. My best friend is a dusty, rose pink.
Piano is typically a deep sapphire blue or soft sky blue. Stringed instruments like violins are jewel tones of green and blue.
Vocals will vary wildly; Freddie Mercury is a bright, vivid orange. Adele is a soft grey.
Not many stories have color, but one of the few that does is the story of how my husband and I met and eventually got married. Telling the story vocally or writing it down, I visualize a deep maroon red, a forest green, and eventually a medium blue.
Emotions have colors, but it’s very inconsistent and changes almost constantly. When I was a child, happiness was yellow. Now it’s blue. Love was red, but now it’s green.
Tumblr media
Because sound has color, it can be very easy for me to go into sensory overload, especially at gatherings or in crowded public spaces. Typically, as long as I can step outside or into a quiet bathroom for a few minutes, the intensity will lessen considerably.
My synesthesia isn’t necessarily a problem, but it can be overwhelming at times. I want to continue making these pieces so I can cope and hopefully create something beautiful out of it.
Thank you for reading. My ask box and inbox are open if you have any questions.

Acrylic paint, paint pen, chrome pen on canvas board, appx 4x5”, four hours. (The numbers are for my own reference)
This piece is special in a few ways. To start, it’s the first vision I clearly remember having. It was also my first vision to come from an orgasm, which was during my first time having sex at all, back in high school. This image has never left my mind or changed, despite 13 years passing between then and when I finally put it to canvas. Given the social significance of the event, it’s no surprise that the resulting vision left that much of an impression on me.

Synesthesia is a neurological condition in which “wires get crossed” in the brain and senses overlap. For some, sounds have texture, numbers have sizes, or sounds have shape and color. There are many more sub types than listed here.
I’ve experienced this my entire life, but only found out this is not a common thing within the last five years. I have the sound = color sub type mainly. I can also “see” a sensation if it is strong enough, like an orgasm or jolt of pain.
I go into better detail here.
This project is an attempt to put my sound and sensation “visions” into a physical form, through paintings and other art forms. These visions will mostly come from music, but may also include bodily sensations. For each piece, I’ll detail what I heard (and include an audio link or description) or felt, how the vision took shape, the materials/media of each piece, and an approximation of how long the piece took to complete.
Thank you for visiting.
As a warning, I will discuss trauma and sex while describing some of my work. I will do my best to properly tag everything. There will be a “read more” with these, to help avoid those subjects.
