He blinked slowly, feeling his eyebrows draw together at the shift in the conversation. How had they gone from talking about Rose to talking about nine months of time? That was barely any at all, but it was oddly specific, and then Sydney was pulling his hand to her stomach and he blinked again, more rapidly. The thought crossed his mind, but it seemed too good to be true. Sydney…” Adrian said, a small laugh puffing out of his lips as he looked down at where his hand rested before looking up to meet her eyes. He couldn’t help the smile on his face, even knowing the way she must be feeling. While it was a dream come true for him, no doubt Sydney would be freaking out. “Are you pregnant?”
She slowly nodded trying her best to blink back tears because she didn’t want Adrian to get the wrong idea about how she was feeling about it. If it had been with anyone else she would have ran off screaming and crying, but with her husband that hadn’t been the reaction. Sure she was still freaking out, but it was mild compared to the usual Sydney Sage melt downs. She stood up on her tip toes slowly fusing their lips together in a delicate kiss. “We’re going to be parents,” she whispered against his lips as she pulled back truly taking in his features. If this was a big deal to her she could only imagine what it would be like for him. “So I really hope you meant you’ll love me for better or for worse because I can only imagine how awful I’m going to be.”

Adrian let out a small sigh as he rolled his eyes in concession. “Okay. Yeah, Rose’s opinion means something. Of course it does, but that isn’t what I mean. As much as I care what she thinks, it doesn’t even hold a candle to making sure you’re happy and that I’m not letting you down.” There had been a time when trying to keep Rose alive and safe had mattered more to Adrian than just about anything, and sure, that still rung true. But she was too stubborn to ever let any threat win and their lives had shifted. She wasn’t chasing a Strigoi around anymore but was living with him, and Adrian was… Sydney was better than anything he could have imagined. Above everything else, making sure she knew how much he loved her was the only thing that meant anything. “Now you might be onto something.” He agreed with an easy grin as he tilted his forehead down to touch hers. “You want me to dress to match? I could make that happen.” Any chance to go all-out. “I never want you to question it, Syd. If you ever do, you’ve gotta tell me.”
“Adrian, I know that my opinion is the one with the most weight for you. I would have to be blind and deaf to not understand that truth,” she reminded him as she dropped a hand to stroke lovingly across his jawline. Sydney knew there was never going to be a good time to tell him the results of the test she had taken, just as she was aware there was never a perfect time to have a child. She was trying to keep her own freak out to a minimal, but the truth was she needed to share the weight of it with him so that she could breath a little easier. “I’m just not sure that will still be true in nine months. Of course it will still be an important opinion, but by then someone far more important than either of us will be in this world and their opinion will be more important.” Deliberately she reached for his hand dragging it down her body to rest solidly on her still flat stomach hoping he would piece together what she was saying. “It might be one of the last times that dress fits for awhile so we should make the most of it. I promise you I know what I mean to you. What we mean to you.”

Adrian felt his eyebrows raise in surprise as a grin spread easily across his face. It wasn’t that he didn’t know how Sydney felt, but it was always special when she was able to say it. Things hadn’t always been that way, and he knew how big it was that she could do it at all. “Your opinion is the only one that means anything to me. You know that, right?” He asked. It was the truth; it might not have been true at one point, but Adrian had come to realize what was important. And what was important was that Sydney was his home and the love of his life. “So you want to go drag me through this museum?” Adrian asked, a light glinting in his eyes. “And, for the record, I’m pretty in love with you too.”
Sydney tipped her head considering her boyfriend for a moment before she shook her head. “We both know that’s a lie, Adrian. Rose’s opinion does register on your radar. It’s important to you that you make her proud,” and once upon a time that very friendship felt like a threat to her. That was before she realized just how in love Rose was with Dimitri, and more importantly just how in love Adrian was with her. They were close, but it was something Sydney was now grateful for because it gave her boyfriend someone that loved him just as fiercely which meant someone who was also protective of him. “I’ll make it worth your while. I’ll wear that dress you love so much and the heels since you’ll be truly suffering,” she teased raking her fingers tenderly through the ends of his hair, “for the record though I know you do. You’re the one part of my life I don’t have any questions on.”

“It’s a talent, really.” Adrian teased as he leaned down to meet her lips with a happy hum. There were plenty of things he cared about, but very few that he cared enough for to do anything for. Sydney was the only thing on the list that was worth much of anything to him, but she was more important than anything else. “I don’t care about what the rest of the world thinks. All I care about is what you think and so long as I live to that standard, I can be a happy man.”
“I think that you’re the hottest man I have ever seen,” Sydney admitted sucking in a deep breath in order to steady herself. She remembered once upon a time that speaking her mind so honestly would have never happened considering what went through her head, but Adrian was her safe space. She could say anything and he wouldn’t look at her any differently than he already did. “You’re also the most creative person I’ve met even if you often use that creativity against me. You’re also the most handsome,” she teased tugging playfully on his hair, “Although you’re also the most stubborn pain in my ass. But I happen to be in love you. I don’t care what the rest of the world thinks of us.”

“Oh, no. No, we can never speak that into reality again. It was hard enough dealing with her the last time.” Rose had just about gone feral trying to fix Dimitri when he was Strigoi. Adrian had a hard enough time trying to get her through that, let alone anything else. “If an art museum’s what you want to do, then that’s what we’ll do.” Any feelings he had about it and any boredom he’d feel would be nothing compared to watching Sydney light up.
“You are the best,” she mused contently as she slid her arms around his neck in order to pull him in for a brief kiss. Sydney wasn’t sure what she did in order to deserve Adrian’s love but whatever it was she was eternally grateful for it. “Although I promise not to wish that upon Rose again. I’d rather not see the world actually burn to the ground even if that’s what my father and everyone else swears is on the verge of happening now. All because some of us have seen the truth.” The truth of being able to live with the Moroi and they weren’t the monsters everyone made them out to be. No, they were far better than nearly everyone she had grown up knowing.

“If Rose came outright and said she needed me, I would have to call someone for backup entirely because I wouldn’t be convinced she wasn’t being held against her will.” It was only in part an exaggeration. Rose Hathaway had come a long way, they both had, but she was stubborn above anything else. “They are never boring for me.” Adrian argued, pausing and letting out a short laugh. “Okay. They aren’t what I would choose, but I don’t go out with you for any reason other than you Sydney Sage, so whatever you’re wanting in that beautiful head of yours is what we’ll do.”
“That’s true. If Rose Hathaway is calling you something has gone terribly wrong in that she is incapable of protecting herself. And something has happened to Dimitri,” it would all go down hill if that were the case. “Until then though I will accept that you’re mine and I get your attention. I do think that going to an art museum though will bore you even if you say otherwise, but I will make it worth your time if I can go see the new exhibit that I’ve been itching to go explore.”

“Anyone who’s spent any time in their orbit, at least. I am a little surprised the Queen hasn’t left Christian so she and Rose can ride off into the sunset, or something.” As it was, Adrian wasn’t entirely convinced it wasn’t something they had considered. More surprising was that at no point when walking through Rose’s dreams had he ever seen anything like it, and she wasn’t that great at hiding things. Not like that. “You’re right, I absolutely would. Even if we had oceans between us.” Adrian promised, one of the easiest things in the world to do. Sydney was the best thing to ever happen to him and he knew it. “I’m sure Jill will be alright to herself for one night. What would you like to do?”
“I’m sure both women have considered it, and both Christian and Dimitri are aware of it. I suppose they both have to be completely happy with who they have then,” Sydney personally would never understand having that bond with another person, but she didn’t need to. She had Adrian after all and while she was jealous that she would never know what it’s like to have true friendships she had him. “Unless Rose just so happened to need you at the same time. Then I’m not as clear on who you would rush to,” a fact that once upon a time would have made her question how he felt about her, but Rose was important in Adrian becoming the man he did which she was forever grateful for. She sighed quietly leaning into him, “You know I’m terrible at planning dates. It’s always boring for you.”
