The way I see it James didn’t take it off because he literally couldn’t. The gracelet makes it so when you think of taking it off you get distracted by something, it changed the way James thought and acted so he wouldn’t take it off, not just with Grace and Cordelia but with Matthew and the alcoholism. Not to mention it was powered by a prince of hell, the fact he was able to break it at all should show he’s a “real man.”

He’s not weak or pathetic, he’s a victim of Tatiana’s cruelty and by extension so is grace. The only thing I can fault him for is not telling Cordelia and math about the gracelet sooner, and even then I understand why he didn’t to an extent.
