another thing that fascinates me about watching silo: i don't even view juliette as the main character. in the sense that this is not The Story of Juliette Nichols. this is the story of the people of the Silo, and juliette just happens to be one of them. she's a circumstantial hero who save the universe because she lives it in. she cares, deeply. she cares about everyone she come in contact with. when faced with the opportunity to uncover lies or right wrongs, she seize it with both hands. she's a girl who ran away from home and becomes the best engineer out of grief. she becomes the hero out of grief, too! she just wanted to uncover the truth behind her boyfriend's death so she could grieve. arfffhh what was i saying? right, juliette nichols is not the main character but she is the main character

You told me “let’s take a mermaid to America and get rich and famous.” Not “let’s steal the queen of the whatsit, what turns into a monster and eats people.” I think I would’ve remembered the difference!

Let Me Introduce You To Lily Shaw and the Mermaid.
You’ve probably never heard of this one but to all horror geeks and lovers of female characters and LGBT Representation, it’s worth the search. The story follows a captive mermaid who is about to be taken to America to be used for profit by a carnival side show. She eventually takes revenge on each and every one of them except for the heroine Lily Shaw, who she has developed an infatuation with and instead gifts the barren women with a child.
So one of the two leads is a vengeful lesbian mermaid who can take on the form of a human and a monstrous form in addition to the traditional mermaid form that takes violent revenge on her captors but shows fascination with the sole woman who shows her compassion and since she is able to impregnate females gifts her with the gift of fertility and spares her as a sort of ‘thank you’ while the other is a con artist who shows a conscience and intelligence and becomes fascinated with the mermaid in turn and shows her compassion as well as try to help her escape and keep her existence a secret. You know, for a made-for-TV feature, they really worked to make these characters worth being invested in.
Next Time: A horror lead who has to deal with an intruder in her house that she can’t even hear.

Y’all already know that I’ve been on an Evanescence kick for a while now, so when I first heard this song I immediately knew I had to make a Vanessa edit. And wow this is officially my longest edit ever 😵💫.
Also, I know the text doesn’t match up with the audio at some parts. It doesn’t seem like I can fix it 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔
Fun Fact: the last part is in Latin and not actually made by Evanescence. It’s a sample from the Broadway version of “Preludium” in The Sound of Music musical. If you're wondering what the last part says, since I didn’t include all of it at the end,
“Lesu, Rex amirabilis,
Et triumphator nobilis,
Dulcedo ineffabilis,
Ineffabilis,
Totus desiderabilis."
which, translated to English, means
“O Jesus, King most wonderful!
Thou Conqueror renowned!
Thou Sweetness most ineffable!
In whom all joys are found!”
Font: Skeetch by Steven J. Lundeen/Emerald City Fontwerks. I chose this font for this because it felt like a child's attempt at cursive handwriting which works with this edit/song! (Another fun fact: I headcanon this font as young Vanessa‘s handwriting!)
Song: Field of Innocence by Evanescence

If you’re concerned about the possibility of Clarice being a leading lady, don’t worry — she’s been that way in the books since 1988.

Appreciation post for how Thomas Harris wrote Clarice Starling character. Most male writers, even the best ones, couldn't create a realistic female character to save their lives. It's always a femme fatale, a submissive and shy girl, or a strong independent woman who acts like a robot, no human feelings at all. But Thomas Harris did such a good work with Clarice. She's strong, independent, smart, determined, and ambitious. She struggles hard to prove herself in a masculine, hostile field, but she is not less empathetic because of it. She experiences fear, shame and anger. She commits mistakes, she is not perfect. She is realistic because she is human, and that's the beauty in her character

She was fixed on the cell. Here she had had the most remarkable encounter of her life. Here she had been startled, shocked, surprised. Here she had heard things about herself so terribly true her heart resounded like a great deep bell. She wanted to go inside. She wanted to go in, wanted it as we want to jump from balconies, as the glint of the rails tempts us when we hear the approaching train. Hannibal - Thomas Harris [Favourite book quotes]
