There are disabilities and then there are disabilities. Often, different disabilities have almost nothing in common save the need to stick together for political and social reasons. Often, there's an invisible cost to being lumped together.

I am very nearsighted. This is clearly a disability, there is no upside, but it's so easily fixed in our society, with so little stigma attached, that people forget to count it. But I must wear expensive aids every day all day, or I can't recognize a photograph of my children from two feet away.

I am ADHD. Being ADHD most definitely ruins people's lives when it goes untreated, unaccommodated, or unrecognized. It has an appalling co-occurrence with joblessness, imprisonment, dropping out, suicide, depression, anxiety--and yet I personally don't experience it as a disability or a thing that can or should be cured. I love the way my mind leaps from spark to spark, creating wonder out of chaos. Being ADHD makes my life more difficult, but I am surrounded by love and understanding, and I am proud of it. Very well for you to say, says the girl who can't touch anyone to the woman who controls storms and flies.

I have fibromyalgia, almost certainly. (It's a diagnosis of elimination and no one really understands what causes it, so almost certainly is as good as it gets.) This causes me unremitting pain and fatigue for no known reason. The current treatment substitutes unremitting pain for chronic sleeplessness and all of its associated ills, as my body eats itself for lack of rest. It is horrible. It is not a disability because society fails to accommodate it, it's a disability because it makes me unable. When people say that disabilities are really created by society, I become angry. Maybe you experience yours that way. I genuinely can't think of any way society could bend that would make constant pain and fatigue anything but shitty.

I do not experience any of those disabilities (or several others) in the same way, and I do not relate to most of what other disabled people say. I am a "bad" disabled person. I am bitter, and angry, and unaccepting. It's okay if you are, too.
