anyway phydra subverts the βbreak the cutieβ trope because she willfully chooses to remain hopeful and refuses to let the bad things bother her. is it healthy for her to bottle everything up and refuse to acknowledge her trauma? no!

baldur's gate 3 starters (part 2)
part 2 / ? .
β iβm also worried about me, but i somehow seem to be worried about you more. β β you put the stars to shame. letβs sit here a little while - i want to drink you in. β β iβd tell you not to get in trouble, but i suspect it will find you whether you like it or not. β β well, this seems as good a time as any for me to stop babbling on. β β i justβ¦.need some airβ¦clear my head. β β itβs been a long time since i shed a tear. i donβt even know how long. β β i had a feeling youβd show up. itβs sort of our thing. like itβs fate or something. β β i do appreciate your enthusiasm, but let's try to restrain ourselves a little. β β if that was an attempt at flirting, i should let you know i prefer the strong, silent type. β β no matter how far you come, youβre still on the road to ruin. β β i thought you a hunter. wrong. youβre prey - small. snivelling. pathetic. β β and what am i owed? what about the injustices iβve suffered - am i not entitled to anything? β β i canβt help but feel the strangest twinge of disgust as i look upon you. β β i trust that you will continue to remember who is really on your side. β β better a short life built on truth than immortality woven of lies. β β i wonβt make excuses. i canβt make amends. but i want to help, if youβll let me. β β gods, itβs horrifyingβ¦and a touch fascinating. β β there are many names for you --- and all of them inspire dread. β β destiny is at your door; wonβt you at least twitch the curtain? β β the gravest crimes committed in this world are committed for love. a hunger crueller than bloodlust. β β youβve got a backbone, and the makings of a leader. β β revenge sounds so sweet until youβve taken it. then all you have isβ¦no one left to blame. β β some mistakes canβt be resolved with an apology. some mistakes, you have to carry with you, forever. β β youβre plotting something, arenβt you? come on then - out with it. β β this is not good, if i may state the obvious. β β think of all weβve been through just to get to this moment. that wasnβt luck. that was us. β β feel like i should laugh but iβm just too godsdamned tired. β β there is something i lostβ¦no, had taken from me. i want it all back. β β careful - youβre in very real danger of hurting my feelings. β β one thing iβve learned - real saviours never label themselves as such. β β less thinking of bad thoughts, and more breaking of bad bones. β β i rather like interfering. itβs kind of my thing. β β evil is evil, even if it once was innocent. β β you know, i've been catching myself smiling more lately. i think that's your fault.. β β oh, iβm no innocent. but evil? you tell me. β β i still want to believe youβre better than that. but even i am having my doubts. β β i canβt afford to lose my nerve. safer to just not think, and keep forging ahead. β β when all this is over, will you stay with me? for good? β β this is not good, if i may state the obvious. β β is there a reason you're always such an utter drip? do you have some sort of condition? honestly, it's like you hate good news. β β all of natureβs beauty pales in comparison to you. β β i canβt save you from yourself. it hurts terribly, but i canβt. β β if i seem suddenly flush with hope and soft feeling, you have only yourself to blame. β β is there good and evil within us all? β
β iβve been watching you fight. your skills are improving. β β you know, for all the sense of dread and horror seeping through this place, i really feel quite at home here. β β and you? youβre wholly without vice or sin or the occasional lapse in judgement? β β i wager you donβt even know how extraordinary you truly are. but i do. β β one might say youβre paragon of luck. iβll be there when it runs out. β β i've always had a soft spot for the confident onesβ¦they always disappoint though. β β i concealed nothing from you. i simply left out the details that were not pertinent. β β youβre an odd friend. but, i suppose, a friend still. β β i wonβt let you do this. i wonβt let you win. β β you are my puppet. make no mistake. without me, you have no value. β β well, this seems like a lovely little spot. the sense of impending doom aside. β β whoever your enemies are, they have good reason to fear you. β β this place is astonishing, a bardβs tale made real. β β i may not regret my actions, but i do regret that they were necessary. β β experience has taught me that no matter how bleak things look, thereβs always hope. β β if this adventure has taught me anything, itβs that there are things in this world more valuable than power. β β a wise man learns from his mistakes, and strives not to repeat them. β β no more hiding things from me. agreed? β β my friend. my companion. i adore you. β β your face is sour. by all means leave, if i am so distasteful. β β careful, itβs dark around here. would be a terrible shame to lose you forever. β β you startled me. iβ¦i was miles away. β β you have to know who i was. you have to know who i really am. β β nothing special, of course. youβre only the first person who i truly care for. β β youβve got a backbone, and the makings of a leader. β β anything you ask, iβll answer as honestly as i can. β

asoiaf: sword of storms starters
β why would the stars want to look down on one such as me? β β sometimes i think everyone is just pretending to be brave, and none of us really are. maybe pretending is how you get brave. β β come, curse me or kiss me or call me a liar. something. β β some battles are not won with swords and spears, others with quills and ravens. β β old stories are like old friends. you have to visit them from time to time. β β still, night falls for all of us in the end, and too soon for some. β β and i tell you truly, there is no man in all the world who will ever be half so true to you as me. β β there are fights no swords can win. β β nothing will happen to you. nothing. i could not stand it. β β in such troubled times, it is hard to know friend from foe. β β you hide behind courtesy as if it were a castle wall. β β why do i enrage you so? iβve never done you harm that i know of. β β it seems to me that a ruler who trusts no one is as foolish as a ruler who trusts everyone. β β loveβs not always wise, iβve learned. it can lead us to great folly, but we follow our heartsβ¦wherever they take us. β β only lies offend me, never honest counsel. β β it was never my wish to sow enmity between us. β β best you were taken to your bed for a long resting, until you are stronger. β β even brave men blind themselves sometimes, when they are afraid to see. β β no harm will come to you, you have my word on that. β β the worst is behind us. donβt be frightened. β β silence. have you forgotten who i am? β β there is something we must speak of. will you walk with me? β β you shall rise again, i am sure. a man like you. β β i am not a cruel man. you know me. β β the world grows a little darker every day. β β i have need of good counsel, and you never gave me less. β β you are a treacherous old rogue, but a good friend all the same. β β madness and greatness are two sides of the same coin. β β if you love me all so much, why are you still dressed? β β youβre mine. mine, as iβm yours. β β wars need not be fought until the last drop of blood. β β one voice may speak you false, but in many there is always truth to be found. β β when it comes to battle, discipline beats valour every time. β β sometimes the best thing you can do is nothing. β β it is too late for ifs, and too late for rescues. all that remains is vengeance. β β only blood can pay for blood. β β why do you hesitate? kill him, and be done. β β i will fall into those eyes and drown. β β harsh justice is still justice. β β i am cleverer than most, surely wits count for something. β β thereβs a storm coming. a bad one. β β men will read all sorts of things into a knowing smile if you let them. β β the greatest fools are ofttimes more clever than the men who laugh at them. β β all these kings would do a deal better if they would put down their swords and listen to their mothers. β β you were made to be kissed, often and well. β β i walk alone with no true companion but tears. β β there is a savage beast in every man, and when you hand that man a sword or spear and send him forth to war, the beast stirs. β β there are fights no swords can win. β β here you are my guest, and safe from harm at my handsβ¦this night, at least. β β i love the smell of you. i love your hair. i love your mouth, and the way you kiss me. β β i am alive, and drunk on sunlight. β β we look up at the same stars and see such different things. β β let them kill me. so long as i die fighting, a blade in hand. β β they are still behind us. they are taking us one by one. β β cry if you must. in your place, i would likely rip my hair out. β β would you wake me, please? iβm having this terrible nightmare. β β i know what it is like to love so greatly you can think of nothing else. β β if truth be told, iβm bored with your company. β β i am tired of fighting you. what say we make a truce? β β no man grows rich by kindness. β β it is well you did not lie to me. i would have known. β β the blood of my enemies i will shed gladly. the blood of innocents is another matter. β β i do not know who you are, and it may be thatβs for the best. someone important, i fear. β β is every word you say a lie? β β why should i tell you my name? you havenβt told me yours. β β you are weak as a child, and no warrior. β β if i look back i am lost. β β if you lie to me, i will have your tongue. β β youβve grown more amusing since last we met. β β i wonder if i might have a few private words? β β i dreamed a dream, no more. go back to sleep. β β this is a bad place, is it not? a dark place, and foul. β β i did not intend to give offence. forgive me. β β you have never feared to speak the truth, why do you lie to yourself? β β the musicβs still playing. might i have this dance? β β your eyes give the lie to your tongue. β β let me go now. for our friendship, wish me luck and let me go β β a wise man never makes an enemy of a king. β β this must be our last time together. the danger is too great. β β some day try thinking before you speak. β β i have a dragonβs temper, thatβs all. you must not let it frighten you. β β you must not be saying such things, even in jest. β β what we want is not always what we get. β β put up that sword now, unless you want to be hurt. β β sometimes a man knows more than he says. β β when i donβt fancy a manβs eyes, i put an arrow through one. β β my heart is full of doubts. β β in times like this, we must make do as best we can. β β i never dreamed how quick the sweet would turn to sour. β β my skin has turned to porcelain, to ivory, to steel. β β the stink of death is fresh on you. β β you have repaid betrayal with betrayal, let it end. β β the higher the man climbs the farther he has to fall. β β i was hoping one look at this sweet face of mine would be enough to persuade you all of my innocence. β β after all the storms weβve suffered, you should trust me better. β β you can kill your enemies, but can you rule your friends? β β could there be honor in a lie, if it were told for a good purpose? β β i am the monster they all say i am. β β pray excuse me, i need to hit someone very hard with a sword. β β you did your best to kill me. perhaps i ought to return the favor. β β you do, donβt you? you take me for a fool. β β weβre all just songs in the end, if weβre lucky. β β there is a long leagueβs worth of difference between wilful and stupid. β β youβ¦a man like you brings blood with him. β β when did i make so many enemies? β β i must be strong. if i despair, my grief will consume me. β β give me sweet lies, and keep your bitter truths. β β i know what it is to be betrayed by men you trusted. β β all my victories turn to dross in my hands. β β it is a pleasure to look on you again, even in such trying times. β β are you scared? have you lost your belly for fighting? β β you were so long, i feared something had gone amiss. β β any man who must say βi am kingβ is no true king at all. β β always keep your foes confused. if they are never certain who you are or what you want, they cannot know what you are like to do next. β β small men curse what they cannot understand. β β if youβre lying to me again, you wonβt be leaving here alive. β β it all goes back and back to our mothers and fathers and theirs before them. we are puppets dancing on the strings of those who came before us. β β when you know what a man wants you know who he is, and how to move him. β β a pure world. i do not belong here. β β you make me sorry that i am not the monster you would have me be. β β i crossed a thousand leagues to come to you, and lost the best part of me along the way. donβt tell me to leave. β β my big mouth will be the death of me, i swear it. β β we have suffered much, and there is more peril and more grief ahead. β β iβ¦i suppose i earned that. β β begging for help never gets you any. β β youβre not made to lie. you blush and squeak and stammer. β β one day you must tell me all. the good and the bad. β β and there is stands, miserable as it is. my ancestral home. β β whatever i do, all i make is death and horror. β β it is safer to walk in darkness here. there are things you would not wish to see. β β you have a certain cunning, but the plain truth is you talk too much. β β that might have hurt me once, when i still felt pain. β β we will fight a battle, and then we will rest. alive or dead, weβll rest. β β every man must die. but first he must live. β β all night i have been making songs for you in my head. β β my blood, my body, my songs, you own them all. β β if you lie iβll punch your face. β β what a fight that was, and what a foe. β β be quiet. i will tell you when you can speak. β β forgive me. you have to forgive me. β β never lie to me. never betray me. β β there are two sorts of people. the players and the pieces. β β the only thing i value less than my life right now is yours. β β perhaps i should leave you here to rot if youβre going to be so discourteous. β β i hadnβt forgotten, though i hoped you had. β β i can still bite and kick. iβll die with the taste of blood in my mouth, thatβs something. β β you bray like an ass, and make no more sense. β β you do not belong here. this is not your place. β β iβm not going back to sleep. my head is all a tumult. β β some doors are best left closed. β β it does not matter how brave or brilliant a man is, if his commands cannot be heard. β β a man who fears battle wins no victories. β β youβre not half bad with a sword, but youβre not good enough to take on two hundred men by yourself. β β that is a good color on you. it goes well with your eyes. β β if blood is what you wish, then let it flow. β β i liked you well enoughβ¦but i never trusted you. a man needs to earn my trust. β β it is good to see you know who i am. β β i have told you no lies. yet there have been truths i have withheld. β β pardon me if i do not weep for you. β β youβll find nothing here but death. β β donβtβ¦donβt talk like this. youβre scaring me. β β you must be very brave or very stupid. β β i gave you the truth. you owe me the same. β β that loose tongue of yours will be your undoing. β β i must have fire in my eyes when i face them, not tears. β β it will take more than an arrow to kill you. β β the soundβs inside, itβs in here with us, and itβs getting louder. β β see? we know each other too well. β β you meddle in matters you do not understand. β β i have no luck. i have never had any bloody luck. β β do all gods feel so lonely? β β you are strangely quiet. how do you feel, i wonder? β β stop trying to think up ways to kill me. none of it will do you any bit of good. β β all you need to do is take my hand, come on. β β weβre together, just as youβve always wanted, just as weβve always planned. β β wars are won with quills and ravens. β β if only i had my sword, nothing could harm me. β β a valiant deed unsung is no less valiant. β β there are wolves in these woods, and worse things. β β say nothing of what weβve discussed here today. to anyone. β β youβd best go. youβre making me angry. β β fear cuts deeper than swords. β β an ill-omened name. i have asked you not to use it. β β you cannot hide from me. come closer, now. β β thereβs no cause for all these tears. β β it is good that you have woken, but you must give yourself time to heal. β β there is no honor in hiding and sneaking. β β come with me. we have to get away from here, and now. β β kings are falling like leaves this autumn. β β you donβt know half as much as you think you do. β β you seem so sombre. is aught amiss? asoiaf: a dance with dragons starters
β i fear i make you uneasy. β β knowledge is a weapon. arm yourself well before you ride forth to battle. β β go on. show your steel. give me cause to do the same. β β fear is what keeps a man alive in this world of treachery and deceit. β β these woods are not as empty as you think. β β promise me that you will never turn against me. i could not bear that. promise me. β β the only time a man can be brave is when he is afraid. β β if i must die, i will die with an axe in my hand and a curse upon my lips. β β tales are told of you. i hear them everywhere. people fear you. β β go too far down that road,Β andΒ mistrustΒ canΒ poisonΒ you,Β make you sour and fearful. β β you mistake me. that was a command, not an offer. β β sorcery is a sword without a hilt. there is no safe way to grasp it. β β prophecy is like a half-trained mule. it looks like it might be useful, but the moment you trust in it, it kicks you in the head. β β it is not the foes who curse you to your face that you must fear, but those who smile when you are looking and sharpen their knives when you turn your back. β β i rose too high, loved too hard, dared too much. i tried to grasp a star, overreached, and fell. β β they think that this will break my pride, that it will make an end to me, but they are wrong. β β tell me of the things that make you happy, the things that make you giggle, all your sweetest memories. remind me that there is still good in the world. β β one war ends, another begins. there is always someone fighting someone somewhere. β β this is what i was made for. the dance, the sweet steel song, a sword in my hand and a foe before me. β β my enemies have told you i am dead. those tales are false, as you can see. β β not all that a man does is done for gain. β β i know that you believe me weak, frightened, feeble. β β it takes a man to rule. kill the boy, and let the man be born. β β do you mean to spend your whole life running away? β β kingdoms are at hazard here. our lives, our names, our honour. this is no game weβre playing for your amusement. β β however gentle the words, there are always darker motives underneath. i do not trust you. β β a good honest face, but you should smile more. β β my throne is made of burned bones, and it rests on quicksand. β β you are so radiant today i fear to look on you. β β prove yourself more trouble than you are worth, and you can go your own way. β β you need not look so pale, i was only playing with you. β β this is not the day i die, i promise you. β β i wanted you from the first time i saw you. β β was i so blind, orΒ didΒ iΒ closeΒ myΒ eyesΒ willingly, so i would not see the price of power? β β men should not go wandering in this place. β β hold your tongue and do as you are told, or you will soon wish you had. β β you wonβt try. you will obey. β β kneel and live. or go and die. itβs your choice to make. β β are you so blind, or is it that you do not wish to see? β β that is not a place you want to go to. β β i will not go back without doing what i came for, no matter how hopeless it may seem. β β the fairest woman in this worldβ¦i am drunk with the sight of you. β β secrets are worth more than silver and sapphires. β β we have come too far to turn back now. β β what have i done to make you hate me so? β β you meet so few men who value friendship over gold these days. β β it is true, i am a bolder man than most. β β i cannot go home. but i dare not stay here much longer. β β foes and false friends are all around me. β β the fewer folk who will know of this, the better. β β all you have i gave you. remember that. β β will you make me say it twice? go and do as i commanded you. β β love is madness, and lust is poison. β β i feel safe when iβm with you. β β have you no smile for me? am i as fearful as all that? β β why did i ever allow myself to be talked into this farce? β β donβt think i donβt see what youβre doing. β β i will tell you nothing. do me the same favor. β β if i look back i am lost. β β a crown should not sit easy on the head. β β we must show a little trust, you and i. β β trust only your companions, and do your best to avoid attracting notice. β β youβre not going to try to kill me again, i hope. β β if you will forgive me for saying so, you lookβ¦weary. are you sleeping? β β your clothes are stained with blood. take them off. β β every fool loves to hear that heβs important. β β my father used to tell me that a man must know his enemies. β β you are a harmless creature, to be sure. as innocent as a lamb. β β till then, let us drink and dream. β β you will be tempted to betray me. to run or fight or join our foes. iβll not hear you deny it. β β soon enough you may have grave need of me. do not refuse my friendship. β β it is best that no man knows that you are here. β β i kill kings, havenβt you heard? β β should any ill befall you, this world would lose its savor. β β some will look at you and see only another doomed pretender. β β i think life is a jape. yours, mine, everyoneβs. β β i will forgive those wordsβ¦once. but never presume to threaten me again. β β your father would be so proud if he could see you. β β just once you might try to give me an answer that would please me. β β they love me well. none would betray me. β β i have sins enough to answer for; iβll have no part of this one. β β i mean you no harm, you know. β β i do not trust you, but i need you. β β weβll both sleep, and dream of sweeter days. close your eyes. β β since you ask so nicely, how can i deny you? β β no wine is half so intoxicating as your beauty. β β why should i beg for what is owed me? β β a lord may love the men he commands, but he cannot be a friend to them. β β let them try and trouble us, weβll show them what weβre made of. β β a leader should be feared, by friend and foe alike. if men think me cruel, so much the better. β β the enemy of my friend is my enemy. β β a book can be as dangerous as a sword in the right hands. β β i am an old man, grown weary of this world and its treacheries. β β these are desperate days, and like to grow more desperate. β β we need to find shelter before nightfall. β β there are footsteps behind us. we are being followed. β β this is no common fog. it stinks of sorcery. β β i am glad you came to me. it is good to see you again, my friend. β β the man who does nothing also takes a risk. β β the women are the strong ones. β β afraid, are you? i would be if i were you. β β tell me a tale. some tale of valor with a happy ending. β β iβll have a cup of wine as well. to clear my head. β β we may lose our heads, itβs trueβ¦but what if we prevail? β β keep your swords sharp. weβll have us a real fight soon. β β this is going to end badly. β β what are you doing here? how did you get past my guards? β β it is so hard. to be strong. i donβt always know what i should do. β β let us instead speak of love, of dreams and desire. β β you wound me, wandering off like this. have you grown tired of my hospitality so soon? β β with this sword i defend my subjects and destroy those who menace them. β β it is too late for such misgivings. you made your choice. β β in times as confused as these, even men of honor must wonder where their duty lies. β β why? what did i ever do to you? β β we must be certain that we do not choose the losing side. β β dream sweet dreams. there are no monsters here. β β i know who you are. i know what you are. β β a little honest loathing might be refreshing, like a tart wine after too much sweet. β β a bloody sword is a beautiful thing. β β a ruler belongs to their people, not to themself. β β if the ones i killed come haunt me, i will kill them all again. β β you shine so brightly, you will blind every man who dares look upon you. β β a fair bargain leaves both sides unhappy, iβve heard it said. β β thereβs blood on your hands, aye, same as mine. β β i have done wicked things, i know, but i could not bear for you to hate me. β β it is good to see you smiling again. β β i have doubts enough without you throwing oil on the fire of my fear. β β blood pays for blood, a life for a life. β β go home, if that is what you want. i am staying. β β a manβd think thereβs no trust between us. β β i would choose freedom over comfort every time. β β you are even lovelier than i was told. β β stay. i do not wish to be alone. β β treachery on treachery. is there no end to it? β β dreams and prophecies. why must they always be in riddles? β β one wrong word, and this could turn to blood in half a heartbeat. β β you lie. i can see the truth in your eyes. β β throw down your steel and stand aside, and no harm need come to you. β β you are supposed to be my friend. why must you mock my hopes? β β it is better to die with honor than to live without it. β β it does no good to brood on lost battles and roads not taken. β β i see you are deaf to sense. β β you are no better than me. weβre just the same. β β a man should never draw his sword unless he means to use it. β β you kill men for the wrongs they have done, not the wrongs that they may do someday. β β close your eyes. close your ears. turn away. you do not need to see this. β β the sooner we are gone from this place, the better. β β i am sorry my actions have displeased you. i did as i thought best. β β you do not need to trust a man to use him. β β if you cannot do this thing, you need only say so. there is no shame in that. β β never wound a foe when you can kill him. dead men donβt claim vengeance. β β this is what i wanted, what i worked for. so why does it taste so much like defeat? β β honest men should never need to hide their faces. β β i am not the trusting fool you take me for. β β menβs lives have meaning, not their deaths. β β heβs dead. he wonβt bite. β β if this is the price for peace, i pay it willingly. β β it makes me wonder whose side you are on. β β dreams and prophecies. why must they always be in riddles? β β i will not say that you are welcome. nor will i deny that i have hoped that you might come. β β you have the eyes of a wolf and a taste for blood. β β men are mad and gods are madder. β β one war ends, another begins. there is always someone fighting someone somewhere. β β not all risks lead to ruin. β β is there some place with fewer eyes and ears? β β i need you now as i have never needed you before. β β tell me, is there any fight left in you? β β it was the wind that you heard screaming. β β crying? i was not crying. why would i cry? β β are you some butcher of the battlefield, hacking down every man who stands in your way? β β rain. a storm is coming. β β that was simple. simpler than i dared hope. simpler than it should have been. β β see that you do not speak of this. iβll not have this tale spread. β β how could i be so blind for so long? β β you had a bad dream, that was all. β β are you prepared to defend that boast with sword or lance? β β i will do it. i said i would. i will. β β think that. believe that. tell yourself itβs true. β β you have more enemies than you know. β β i have no heart. i only have a hole. β β it has been too long since iβve killed a man. β β words are wind. words cannot harm me. β β have you forgotten who i am? β β too many good men died that day. β β it is so good to see your face, your sweet face. β β it is still not too late to abandon this folly. β β i will not stay here to be insulted. β

people probably think phydra is much younger than she is and that this is her first adventure when they first meet her. but she's well into elven adulthood, she's gone on multiple journeys in her lifetime, partaking in the run to meet new people and rescue those that want to defect from lolth. her kindness and generosity aren't a symptom of youthful ignorance, she's seen so many of the world's horrors but she has seen just as many of its wonders!!
#out of character.#thinking about how eilistraeans will assimilate themselves and pretend to be lolth-sworn to try and identify defectors and save them...

no one is beyond redemption in phydra's eyes do u understand. she genuinely tries to get ketheric to repent and come back to the light. thats the entire point of eilistraee's church is forgiveness and repentance. whatever you did in the past does matter, but you can always move forward from it, you are never lost. do you understand do you get it.
