Jameson would not like Vince at all. He seems weak. Like he wouldn't fight back or be angry. Like maybe he isn't strong.

Vince is older than Kauri enough that Jameson probably wouldn't confuse them? But he would wonder why a Boxie has an older brother (like, a bio brother) hanging around.

I think he probably is still struggling with the idea of fighting not necessarily being the way to survive for everyone.

No better! But definitely with an added air of pity that Ryan doesn't feel in canon. He would be more derisive, and I think Danny would be angrier at him for how he treated/talked to Nate.

The thing is, like, I’m okay with Chris, I’m fine with parental death in fiction. It’s just if the parents are alive and desperately love their kid but are separated from them. Yeah, the Fillis angst parade was.. not for me (and that’s okay!)

It’s pretty rare in whump but situations where parents are separated from their kids and don’t get to see them grow up.. those get me, man, that’s a hard no. I’m also really into horror and anything with babies or realistic kid death (like, Jaws got me, Krampus and Halloween 3 were fine) is a no. Heads up to anyone out there, don’t watch The Witch.

Ooooh I could see Chris being hard in that respect. And also that hits on something with the @whump-tr0pes AU Athena and I have flirted with where Iris - Finn and Ellis’s daughter - is raised as a Michaelson Syndicate child. One thing I did with that as I wrote it was go from thinking they would have SOME rare contact with Iris not realizing they were her real parents to eventually, in the finished product, have Finn and Ellis both still heavily involved in Iris’s life and Iris knowing EXACTLY who they are.

There is definitely an intentional parallel when it comes to Dylan wondering if he should tell Laken because ‘don’t they deserve to know’, yes. Which trust me, Laken would not react well to.

They’d clock him as a masochist fast. He’d end up with a sadist, and he’d be a high dollar sale, too, since his particular physical masochism, where he literally confuses pain and pleasure on a nervous-system level, is very rare.

Best case scenario? He goes to someone like Wright Farling and lives happily ever after.

“What is even left of you?” Karen’s hand moves through his hair, the black leather gloves the essential distance between his skin and hers. She wears them all the time now, with him, because she wants to touch him.

A reminder, he thinks to himself, that he is still hers. He surprised her with defiance, unsettled her with his love for someone else. He isn’t supposed to be able to feel love any longer. He isn’t supposed to have anything left.

Dex ducks his head against the touch, closing his eyes. He’s been drifting for a while now, lost inside his own mind, replaying years of good moments. Hands on his skin that don’t belong to her but to the man who leads him sometimes by a finger hooked in the ring at the front of the collar he wears only for him.

He takes in a breath - it hitches, and he can’t catch it in time.

“You’re barely human,” Karen says, softly. “Just skin stretched over bone and what impulses I have let you keep. There is nothing in you to care for.”

She’s insecure about the work she did on him, always has been. She’s scared that she didn’t break him completely. 

Karen Renford can feel fear, too.

“He’s played a long game with you, but that’s all it was, I think,” She says, and she is speaking to herself far more than she is to him. Dex keeps his eyes closed, thinks about days spent laughing and talking and arguing in good-natured ways. The times he would get angry and be allowed that anger, until he stopped being afraid of it.

“It has to be. What are you? You’re nothing. You’re a piece of ass to fuck, a face to stare at while he indulges himself. There is nothing left. Or there will be.”

Her hand slips down, the leather cupping the side of his face. Dex feels his chin tipped up and he looks up at her, finally, from where he knees next to her desk. Her eyes are cold, and she stares at him.

He feels flayed apart, skin stripped to show the next layer of himself, the spaces she cannot find her way into. The wall he hides what’s left of himself behind.

“I won’t have his affection for me be… undone, by something as worthless as you are,” Karen says. Her tone is nearly loving, nearly gentle. “Oh, Dex. You are such a disappointment, but not to worry. Not to worry, darling.”

Don’t worry, darling. He changes the voice, in his mind. It won’t be long, now. I won’t be able to come back to visit for a bit, but the next time you see me… He doesn’t know exactly how long, he’s not sure about time right now. Too many things in his veins, too much pain. The days run together.

“Don’t worry,” Karen Renford says, softly. “If I can’t fix you for good this time, Dex, I will ensure no one else can, either.”

His eyes must flare a little as he takes the information in, because she smiles.

“Oh, darling. He doesn’t care about you. And if he does…” She rubs her gloved thumb over his cheek. “That’s unacceptable, Dex. Do you understand?”

He nods.

Just a little longer. When I come back for you, I’ll take you home.

“If he ever asks for you again,” Karen says softly, thumb over his lip now, leaning in close. “I’ll kill you before I let him take you from me.”

Dex swallows, staring into her cold, cold eyes.

He nods, again.

Just a little longer, love.

He’s running out of time.

Just because the whumper is gone, doesn't mean they aren't still with their victim . . .

- the whumpee, even after being freed, wakes up and goes to bed on the same schedule they were on when in captivity

- following casual commands made by friends

- "hey when you have the chance can you take out the trash?" "Yes, sir."

- friends and caretakers trying to tell the whumpee that they dont have to use those words anymore. Sir and Master aren't necessary anymore, but they keep using them anyway. It's a habit, and also a survival mechanism.

- asking for punishment when they've made a mistake

- when their friends don't give punishment, they find ways to punish themselves

- sharp objects are hidden, now

- so are hot showers

- so are strings

- their friends have them on constant suicide watch, and worry about them when they're too quiet or disappear behind a closed door

- the whumpee sometimes bows their head on instinct. They have a hard time looking people in the eyes, or even at their face

- any loud noise, literally anything, causes them to jump. They hide it well, this habit wasn't caught until later, after the friends have made plenty of loud noises around them

- they pull their hair sometimes, twirling their fingers around a strand or two and yanking. It's small pain but punishment enough

Self-punishment after being rescued from a captivity where they constantly or methodically received punishment is amazing. It shows how deep-rooted their whumper is in their head. It overpowers their self-preservation and allows their conditioning by the whumper to take over. They truly think they deserve it. Sigh, what a wonderful way for a whumper to still be present in the whumpee's life, even when gone/defeated.

semi-sad question: how would things have changed if Nate’s family were still alive? would he have gone back to them after escaping from Bram the first time? what was his family like?

Nate’s parents met in college, married, and had him shortly afterward. They were loving, but died in a car accident when he was very young, and he was sent to live with his paternal grandparents, his only living relatives - devout Catholics who raised him as Catholic until they also died just before he graduated from college.

Nate was in the closet with his grandparents and never came out to them, and that’s a bit of personal regret he carries around and wishes he had done something about - the longer they’ve been gone, the more he wonders if they might have understood far better than he had assumed at the time. 

Assuming his parents were still alive when everything happened with Bram the first time around… he might have gone back to them, but he was scared enough of Bram finding him that he might not, too. Although he would have let them know he was alive, and he almost certainly would never have run so far as to find his way to California, and he would never have met Danny.

Bram would have tracked him down eventually, dragged him back to the house in Tennessee where Ashley died, and he would still be there right now, all alone, with Ashley back from the dead and very, very upset with him for stabbing her.

A whumpee escapes captivity, but they can’t let their friends see them like this. They push open the door to their house that they haven’t been in for however long they were captured.

Tomorrow they’ll put on a brave face in front of their friends, they’ll smile and pretend nothing happened. But that’s tomorrow. Today they need to tend to their wounds.

They scrub the blood from underneath their fingernails, watching as it drips into the sink and turns the water red. They step into the shower and let the months of dirt and blood and hopelessness wash away.

Tomorrow they’ll pretend like the months of torture didn’t happen. But today, they sink down against the wall of their shower, their tears mixing with the water.
