We should get to see Sebastian scared more.

Not of the Undertaker, or of his dolls, or of being too weak, or of the possibility of his own 'death', or even of losing his master - at least, not directly.

We should see him becoming gradually, acutely, through all of his self-denial, aware of the shift in his very own nature.

Of course he's tried to reason it to himself - he wants Ciel, always had done. The boy's very life belongs to him, after all; but he will come to a point where he realises that he was unprepared for just how deeply he wants him - that he wants not just his master's soul, but all of him in his entirety. How that simple 'want' has somehow become a 'need', right in front of his nose without him even being aware that the shift was happening until it was too late, too caught up in himself to notice the difference.

And that realisation should be wonderful, and beautiful, and intriguing, and absolutely terrifying.

The story of Hades and Persephone isn't an abduction romance, or even a tragedy of not being able to be in two places at the same time. It's about how fucking wild it would be to have a mother who gives a shit about whether you're dead or alive, and whether you are happy.

𝕴 have always found it very intriguing that Ciel, canonically, has only ever asked Sebastian if it was possible to bring back the dead once in their contract. At the very beginning, he questioned the demon on the matter and, all hints considered, understood that there is no way to bring back a dead person — at least not the way they were or in the way that he wishes it was possible. Not once since then does he bring up the issue again.

When he encounters Undertaker in the School Arc and questions him on the matter of bringing back the dead, Ciel is horrified and abhorred by the prospect. Over years, he has made up his mind and with the demon at his service, the very demon that cannot lie to him and who mocked his desire to bring back a dead person as well as made it clear it's impossible, he knows there is no way to resurrect the dead in a way that doesn't break them.

Ciel's brother is dead for good on many layers including physical: he is dead as a person, concept, memory, sibling, son, and Earl. Ciel has incorporated all of it into himself, crafted himself into this name and position.

He is Earl Ciel Phantomhive, the one and only left.

There is a simple formula that I have realised can be used to properly replicate the feel of sebaciel's canon dynamic when moved into pretty much any au:

Sebastian should have a reason to be dispassionate about his current life and bored with people.

Ciel must stand out as a point of intrigue.

Despite whatever it is that keeps them together, be it fate or work or just pure fascination, Ciel must have a cause to be distrustful of Sebastian, or otherwise judgemental of his character.

Of course this works for all eternal-creature Sebastians, where he is unenthused and feared by mundane humans, Ciel being the only one to challenge him or be otherwise unafraid whilst still holding an awareness of the thing's true nature, but it can be translated into purely human au's as well.

To use my proposed catfishing au idea as an example, Sebastian finds the way people who talk to him online are so desperate to believe his lies in their search for love laughably stupid, and almost too easy; they parctically deserve to lose their money to him. Ciel is unique in that he isn't enamoured, and in fact he's playing Sebastian straight back. It's someone that might actually be fun to mess with, to push and see just how far it might go.

And then for Ciel, he knows that Sebastian cons people, and that he's an expert in emotional manipulation, so why should he believe it when the man says he genuinely likes taking to him?

Volume 4 AU Bonus:

Sebastian working as a part of a successful team with the rest of the staff, who'd have thought?

Of course, he still had to be the one taking the spotlight - the main name that everyone will truly remember.

Maybe the Sebastian of this AU is more amicable than his main series counterpart, but I can still otherwise imagine that if he could get away with racing entirely solo, he would. He's probably still always pushing as far as he can with following Ciel's tactical instructions, at the very least.

Of course Bard is in charge of the pit crew, where else would he be? He looks so proud of himself for it, too. You can practically here him thinking "yeah, this is a real man's work."

Meanwhile, I bet Sebastian always sits waiting in the pits for those whole 2.5 seconds of getting his tyres changed thinking 'I could have done it faster'.

Looking at Sebastian's attire a little more closely:

He's racing for Phantomhive, and sponsored by what I would assume to be Funtom (the patch hidden by the title looks like it's probably an F), and also has his own demonic sponsorship - possibly also a nod to Yana's old website/blog, Devils 6th Day. He also has another partially obscured patch which I'm fairly certain is for Kon Ron, Lau's shipping company, making the man another sponsor for the team.

Maybe this AU might shape up to be Sebastian's story of learning to work as a team player, with the majority of the old crew leaving because of Sebastian's attitude, and a new team of the phantomfam having to be found and brought in, meanwhile Sebastian learns to maybe not be so much of a self-centred asshole. You know, heartwarming stuff.

I bet Ciel loves that Sebastian can't move his mouth enough to talk properly in his helmet. Stops him from backtalking so much about strategy - or at least makes him sound silly and muffled enough to ignore when he tries.
