Neil Newbon ending his performance of the year speech at the BAFTA Game Awards with “you’re not alone in this, none of us are.” made me so teary. Because so many traumatized people and queer folks resonate HARD with the characters in this game in ways I haven’t seen in any other game before. Astarion and all the other characters are so special and let those who are struggling feel so seen and inspired. Sorry for being so sappy :’)

I just realized what the Larian team on The Game Award reminds me of. It's a DnD party. Led by Sven the Paladin. Neil is probably a Bard and his wife is a Sorceress. They also have a druid in a bear suit. "Ok, my people, you know the drill! If they don't give us the award, we roll for Initiative! Let's go!"

I had a legitimate emotional response about Neil Newbon winning awards for his performance and work on Astarion.
Most of my feelings were centered on how he has never forgotten, not for one SECOND, all the people who worked together to make this character and gane come to life, and every time he gets the spotlight on him he takes the time to remind the world that he didn't do this alone.
That takes so much... quality of character, I want to say. He is deliberate, authentic, intelligent, careful, educated, and mature while still allowing himself to be playful, joyful, whimsical.
I watched an interview where he was asked about his childhood fears and he firmly stated that that was private, but what he DID want to talk about was the process of him realizing that he is in control of himself, his growth, and when he got to the other side of his fear he realized he was in charge of setting himself free as well. And that THAT was power, you know?
He takes responsibility for himself, he navigates publicity with care and grace, and he never forgets who else deserves accolades. If they don't get it, he gives it to them.
There have been method actors that are great for a part, that vibe heavily with their muse. I think Astarion was so, so lucky as a character to be cradled in the hands of this man in particular.
Congratulations to Neil. This is incredibly well deserved.
#can’t even add anything else to this it’s so beautifully well said#neil newbon#astarion#bg3#goty 2023

Watching gaming dudebros have full-on heart attacks and stroking out over tasm2 not winning or any of their basic ass shooting games and running around talking about how “nobody played Alan Wake 2 or BG3” when in fact a shitload of people did play both games and yall refuse to branch out and play other games and yall live in a bubble of just Fortnite, Cod, and other games just like it, and now you’re going out of your way to be unhinged individuals online about it instead of showing good sportsmanship and congratulating the amazing games and teams behind them that did win an award.
#also I’m like the biggest spiderman fan out there but ofc bg3 sweep had to come through but even im not sitting here screaming over tasm2#i feel like dudebros crying about their games not winning when they single handedly refuse to interact in fandom spaces and support content#is the main reason why ur games didn’t win bc y’all don’t interact with anything outside of the game#it was the dedicated fanbases and the ppl who loved these companies and the actors/writers/producers/etc tht got their deserved awards#bc they actually care !!!#yall don’t gaf about anything outside of just gameplay yall sit in isolated bubbles and act like every other game is “mid” and non existent#bc u refuse to interact and yalls weird thing with specific genre games tht I won’t get into rn bc tht will go into weird masculinity play#in gaming spaces but#stop being weird ass adults online bc your game didn’t win#just saw a shit load of comments admitting they “weren’t voting” for anything while pissing bc bg3 got goty like make it make sense????#don’t call something mid or bash the va who rightfully got an award when u showed no support for ur game#like looking at half of these tweets and corny ass dramatic reaction videos by grown ass men is embarrassing#I’m so glad that I’m an actually a well adjusted adult bc I couldn’t be acting like some of yall fr#bg3#alan wake 2#goty 2023

I think people using the romance statistics as an “I gotcha” moment doesn’t really make sense to me since we’ve already established that people constantly get rejected by Astarion, and a lot of y’all have admitted to giving up on his romance because he was too “high maintenance” or because you’re so adamant on the fact you have to be fully evil to romance him, which isn’t true, and there’s a whole wiki dedicated to proving y’all wrong. And also the fact that a lot of y’all left him or admitted to k/lling him on your first playthrough for some goofy ass reason. But obviously, that means the romance statistics are going to show the characters that were actually romanced because it was the easiest for you and others.
Also, it’s funny that people are talking about how “Astarion fans are just the loudest” and that “he’s not really popular” when Lae’zel made third place, and mind you, the nasty ass shit y’all say in regards to her character because of her appearance and how she’s “mean” when you first meet her is about the same amount as Astarion's.
Like, the number of dudebros that don’t like her is really large, so saying Astarion's not being popular is why he isn’t in the top romance doesn’t make sense because she too isn’t considered popular among cishet male players. Also, take in the fact that cishet male players mixed in with sapphic players romancing the fem companions is obviously going to pit them all in the top spots. Idk why this is so hard for y’all to understand. The amount of “cope and seethe” comments going around when people are actually making valid points about how the romance statistics don’t reflect fandom preference is insane.
Someone posted ao3 stats versus the romance statistics yesterday, and a shitload of you people got mad once again because “why do yall write so much, mlm?” and so many people were either bashing Astarion or bashing people who liked him because some of you refuse to simply make your own fics. Yeah, f/f deserves just as much popularity, but some of you were going into some weird “I can’t stand men lovers” territory, which is weird as hell and is not getting me to listen to your cases.
Also, I just want to state that if you’re one of those people who is so pissed off about Astaron to the point of being mean to Neil for being recognized for his amazing voice acting, then you need to get a life. The recent drama has also bled onto Neil, which is so unnecessary and bizarre because a dislike for a character should never mean you harass or disrespect the actor. Like, you can’t say Astarion “isn’t popular” when fandom drama revolves around y’all’s hate boner for a vampire elf who ain’t doing shit fr.
#some of y’all deliberately reading ppls post wrong and acting like ppl are saying “only cishet men romance the fem companions”#when thts not what ppl are saying at all#and this is more of discussing ppl who partake in fandom versus cishet males in gaming spaces and the differences#idk bg3 fandom was fun at first but now y'all are so on edge over a game where you can suck a bear’s cock#yall need to unpack while i sit in my lil corner with my vamp elf who y’all deliberately misread btw but I digress

I should honestly drop all the screenshots I have of my insta mentions and not to mention Reddit threads, the bg3 forums etc of men calling Astarion slurs. The amount of times I’ve seen “zesty” and “sassy” used in negative connotations. And ppl calling him bi instead of pan bc again phobia. Like the list is so long and I’m so tired of y'all saying that we’re lying about bg3 fandom being homophobic when it’s actually a problem
Also I’m happy about the fem companions making top spots but somebody on twt made a valid point of how most male players k/ll off Astarion bc of their fragility in regards to a masc character flirting with them and ofc somebody had to bring up how the homophobia in the fandom was “made up.”
Mind you for the past few days I’ve had non stop mentions on my other account from grown ass men harassing me after I said that Astarion is canonically pansexual and had some guy not only dropped a truly deluded transphobic comment towards me but also the way every single one of their comments followed the same “Astarion can’t be pan bc he’s too effeminate.” Y’all are so painfully bi/panphobic and only Astarion has been treated like this despite all the characters being canonically queer but the refusal to let go of preconceived notions surrounding queer men and queer ppl in general is hard for a lot of you unfortunately.
