she was making her rounds, looking around town for anything that would be of value (and trying to find reasons to be away from the childhood home that did not currently have her grandmother in it) when she noticed the scent of something cooking. feeling her mouth water, shelly followed the smell of salt and fryer oil over to the diner. pushing the door open, her gaze landed on man sitting down, eating a plate of fries. "what about waffle fries? are those available?" she questioned as she sat in the seat opposite of him. she let out a soft sigh, welcoming the break from standing. "the whole diner menu in front of you and you only wanted fries?"
where: riverbend diner who: open
he worked at a diner back in his hometown. a spot a little less friendly and with a touch more grime. the vinyl booths cracked, the waitstaff smelling of smoke breaks and grease, the fluorescent sign fading one vowel at a time. it was second nature to drop a basket of curly fries into the fryer, watch them sizzle and then sling them onto a plate. he lit the burners, found an eighties soundtrack on the jukebox and slid into one of the empty booths. he was a third of plate in, contemplating cheese sauce when her heard the door slid open. he leaned in his seat with a crooked smile before saying, "if you've come looking for curly fries you're out of luck. i got dibs."

"sorry, i called your name." camilla had looked pulled into the book she was pouring over, and shelly had hoped by verbally announcing her presence she wouldn't scare the other girl. clearly... it didn't work. "um... have you found anything interesting?" to be honest, she wasn't sure where to begin when researching this random phenomenon. she had never heard of cases of entire town's going missing. sure, there was the lost colony of roanoke... but didn't they literally debunk it and say everyone just up and moved?
while part of her hoped that was the case here, she knew it wasn't true. her grandma's favorite blanket was still in it's normal place on their couch.
realizing camilla had asked her something, shelly lifted up a few books of her own and sat down. resource guides, books that identified different types of edible and poisonous plants, ones about hunting... "i figured i'd do some research of my own." god forbid she brought back poison ivy for everyone to eat.
starter : open [ 0 / 6 ] location : stonehaven public library
camilla is used to having answers ... not question, solutions. the longer she finds herself stuck in this place, the harder she's finding it to remain composed and calm. books are scattered across the desk in the library, half opened to random pages, others with her writing in the margins ( who was going to stop her from writing in the books? it's not like they had anyone to provide proper discipline ); answers lingered in the background, while more questions simply arised. she doesn't hear the other coming, nor does she hear them trying to capture her attention, solely focused on the task at hand and blocking out any noise from the outside. it's not until someone leans next to her that her body jumps, “ ⸻ jesus ... christ. don't sneak up on me like that, ” a beat. “ what do you want ? ”

when the occupations were assigned toher peers, shelly had agreed to be a hunter for one reason... no one else had. and to be honest, it wasn't really well suited for her. she wasn't the kind of person who knew how to use a weapon. that being said, she had been a cross country athlete in high school and still had the endurance which meant she could stand on her feet for long. maybe that's why she was one of the only people out right now, everyone else was too exhausted from the events of the past three days.
she had gone to the diner first, hopeful that maybe someone else hadn't cleared out their freezer. no such luck, which brought her to the general store.
she had just entered, not even really noticed anyone else was inside, when she heard a voice below her. jumping backwards in surprise, shelly immediately apologize. "sorry! i didn't even see you actually." she tried to explain. mariana was shorter and it wasn't super bright in here. shelly's gaze had skipped right over her. "have you found anything useful?" she wondered, eyeing the cans of beans that had clearly not been good enough.
who : mariana + anyone. where : cypress general store status : [ open ]
the shelves of cypress general store were a skeleton of what they once were … half empty rows of canned goods, and a few dusty flashlights no one had thought to grab yet. "beans, beans, beans," mari muttered under her breath, holding up a can of pork stew with a grimace. "this is it? seriously?" she groaned, louder than anticipated. "i'm supposed to survive on this?" the crate rattled as she dug deeper, her frustration bubbling over. she didn’t even know why she cared so much, eating pescatarian felt like a silly hill to die on in, well, wherever the hell she was. but then again the thought of canned meat turned her stomach. as she reached for another dented tin, a faint creak from the floorboards made her freeze. slowly, she looked up, her pulse skipping when she spotted a shadow looming over her. "god— are you crazy? ring a bell or something, don't just sneak up on people."

( brittany o’grady. cis woman. she/her. ) did you hear ? ROCHELLE JOHNSON is stuck in stonehaven for the for the foreseeable future … they've lived here for TWELVE YEARS and are known around town as THE BENEVOLENT, though back in high school they were better known for being voted MOST LIKELY TO WORK FOR A NON PROFIT. if i'm not mistaken, they’re a TWENTY ONE year old junior studying COMMUNICATIONS ( i really hope that translates well into their role as a/an HUNTER/FORAGER in the ‘new world' ). according to my records they were originally on the trip because she helped plan and organize the trip (as she is a member of stonehaven’s student volunteer group) — which checks out, given they’re GENEROUS, RESERVED and INSECURE. if you’re ever trying to find them, your best bet is to start at wildflower greenhouse and listen for someone humming cardigan by taylor swift. oh, and don’t forget to try calling out shelly or picturing fuzzy socks and warm coffee on a winter’s day, journaling after finishing a 5 star read, finding the perfect piece of art for her dorm gallery wall, a soft smile and wave to anyone who passes by for extra help. let's hope the chaos doesn't get to them … (brie. 32. she/her. cst. none. )
BASICS
name: rochelle johnson
nickname(s): shelly
age: 21 years old
birth date: october 8th
zodiac sign: libra
gender, pronouns: cis woman, she/her
orientation: demisexual, biromantic
relationship status: single
occupation: hunter/forager
hometown: boston, massachusetts
lodging: the johnson cabin (house f)
BIOGRAPHY {TW: mentions of emotional and mental abuse, mentions of parental neglect}
shelly grew up in boston and lived with her mother until she was nine. her mother, who had narcissistic tendencies and is what one would call emotionally abusive, set shelly on a path towards being the picture perfect, submissive, people pleaser she is now.
while under her mother's care, shelly understood the expectations set and how she was to behave outside the house in order to make sure people looked upon them with the highest of opinions. but inside her house, her mother never refrained from using shelly as a verbal punching bag and always reminding her how much better her life had been before having a daugther.
moving in with her grandma wasn't intentional. she went to visit her grandmother in stonehaven, indiana while her mom was off on an adult only vacation with her boyfriend, and then... shelly just never went back to boston. she's unsure if her mother never came back, if her grandma had taken notice of her sheepish granddaughter and stepped in, or if it was some agreement between the two. regardless, the situation did less good for shelly's mental health than was intended.
she always wondered if she had been a better daughter, been smarter, been prettier, been more accomplished... would that make her mother love her more?
shelly's experience with doing whatever to make her mother happy has left her to often disregard her own feelings in order to make others around her happier. she tries to do the right thing, be perfect and happy and good if only to make sure when she goes to bed at night she can tell herself if someone has an issue with her, then it's their problem and not because of something she did.
but now that everyone has seemed to disappear, shelly wonders just how beneficial this way of thinking could be, and if it'll serve her well in this new world. people could get intense, mean, confrontational, and she doesn't do well in those situations. she's trying to stay positive and tell herself that she'll do her best to help their new society, but only time will tell if any of that is true.
CHARACTER TRAITS
positive: generous, reserved and positive negative: insecure, complacent and oversensitive
HEADCANONS
shelly was always pretty athletic. in high school she was part of the cross country team. she still goes on long runs in order to clear her head, or when she wants to wind down.
shelly feels guilty for the situation everyone is currently in. she helped set up the trip because she's a member of the college's student volunteer group and while she knows she didn't have anything to do with everyone going missing, she can't help but feel like if they didn't go on the trip they'd be with everyone else. somewhere else.
she agreed to be one of the groups hunter/foragers mostly because she knew they were needed and wanted to do something helpful. what is more helpful then finding food, right? she's not really strong with weapons but she's been able to learn how to make traps... which is something. right?
shelly is currently staying in her childhood home and without the warmth of her grandma it's become almost unrecognizable. that being said, she's protective of her home and doesn't want anything to be disrupted until her grandma's return along with the rest of the town.
sometimes shelly leaves little notes pinned on the fridge behind one of the numerous magnets her grandmother collected (presents from neighbors, friends and family who ever visited another country) hoping her grandma will somehow answer back.
WANTED CONNECTION
the ringleader (-). someone who clocked that shelly is easy to manipulate right away and took her under their wing. shelly is someone they can put down to feel better and know she'll never stand up or leave their side.
adonis moore. the drunken hook up (+/-). they both got drunk one night at a college party (before the world seemed to end) and hooked up. before they could ever really talk about the outcome of the situation everything seemed to be turned upside down. shelly still isn't sure if she has feelings for adonis or just needs closure, but she's trying to find the right time to bring up her discomfort with how they left it.
the study buddy (+). a fellow student at stonehaven college that was just as serious about their studies as shelly. or maybe they just always sat at the same table in the library. regardless, there is a genuine comfort between the two.
the search and rescue (+/-). one of them got lost one day out in the woods trying to find food to bring back to the town. perhaps someone twisted their ankle and was screaming for help and the other stumbled upon them, they bonded over the long walk back to town. talked about the new reality and what they missed about their homes. {open for other hunters/foragers, scouts or scavengers}
carolina castillo-morales. the new friend (+). caro and shelly both live in the johnson cabin together and quickly bonded over their new situation. they've found a comfortable living arraignment and the two have begun to lean on each other emotionally in these difficult times.
tristyn buckley. the hype man (+/-). tristyn's noticed shelly's inability to say the word no. she doesn't stand up for herself and he's has taken it upon himsefl to help her get better at setting personal boundaries and paying attention to what she needs. the relationship definitely causes shelly to be uncomfortable, but deep down she knows this is work that needs to be done.
the childhood friend (+). someone who welcomed shelly with open arms when she moved to stonehaven. her first friend in town and probably one of the people she's closest to still to this day.
mariana flores. the opposite (+). mariana and shelly are not very alike, but shelly treats everyone with kindness and mariana is not an exception. in fact, it seems like it might be wearing off on the town's pessimist.
elias kader. the misunderstanding (-). there was an interaction between elias and shelly, that due to miscommunication and assumptions, has caused what could only be called as an annoyance to build between the two.
would also love more negative connections so if people have them or have ideas throw em at me.
