Hold On (pt. 4)
link to part three
cw: none really, just tension tension TENSION
a/n: the next chapter is just gonna be straight up smut in all honesty, but it’s gonna be sappy as hell so prepare yourselves accordingly
You walk through the park silently, side by side. The small distance between you feeling even larger.
Oikawa’s gaze occasionally darts over to you. The sight of your expression, clearly distracted in your own head, inciting a pang in his chest.
“You've been quiet this whole time…”
“Sorry,” you mutter, “just in my head I guess.”
“No, it's fine, I get it. You're probably thinking about Kageyama, right?” He tried to keep his tone neutral, but there was a hint of jealousy and bitterness creeping in.
“Yeah I just, god, I haven't seen him in like two years it's so weird I keep thinking one day I'll open my door and he'll be there y'know just standing on my porch.”
“I get that. You've missed him a lot, huh?”
“You have no idea,” you sigh as the two of you stop in front of your house, “Tobio is-”
You are cut off by a voice behind you, smirk audible in the words.
“Tobio is what?”
Oikawa's eyes widened as he saw Kageyama step up behind you. His heart clenched.
Your eyes water almost instantly as his voice flows into your brain. You spin around so fast you thought you might fall down.
“You- you’re… here.”
You smile, tears spilling down your cheeks as you wrap him in a nearly suffocating hug.
Kageyama chuckled softly, his arms instinctively wrapped around your waist, holding you tightly against him.
“Missed you too, dumbass.”
He buried his face in your neck, taking in the familiar scent of your perfume.
Oikawa scoffs from behind you.
“Uh why is he here?” Kageyama sneers, looking towards Oikawa.
“Our parents…,” you sigh, “they're making us get married for the sake of their stupid companies.”
Kageyama's expression quickly switched from curious to shocked. His jaw dropped open. He gaped at you for a few seconds before turning his gaze towards Oikawa.
“I can’t believe your parents would force you to marry him.”
“Our parents are merging the companies, and they think it would be a good idea for the heirs to get married as a show of good faith,” Oikawa spoke evenly, but his fists clenched at his sides in irritation.
You look between them, gauging their expressions before turning back to Kageyama.
“Tobio, you didn't get a hotel right? You're gonna stay with me?”
Kageyama's expression softens, and Oikawa’s jaw clenches almost audibly.
“Yeah, I assumed I'd be crashing at your place. I didn't have time to book a hotel or anything.”
“Perfect,” you smile up at him, pure adoration in your eyes, “I’m so glad you're back, Tobio.”
Kageyama lifted a hand to your face, running his thumb softly over your cheek. Even after so long apart, you fit against him just as perfectly as always. He wrapped an arm around you, pulling you even closer.
“I'm glad to be back, princess. Missed you like crazy.”
A smile spreads across your face at what he used to call you, feeling a sense of stability creep back into your life.
Kageyama could feel his heart skip a beat. It had been far too long since he had last seen you happy like this. He gave your waist a gentle squeeze, leaning in to press a kiss to the top of your head.
“There's that smile I missed so much.”
Oikawa's irritation was growing more apparent by the second. He crossed his arms over his chest, his expression darkening as he watched the two of you exchange affectionate gestures.
You turn to face Oikawa, barely even registering his exceedingly obvious anger.
“Toru, uhm, you can go home.”
Oikawa's jaw was still clenched tightly, but he managed to force a tight smile.
“Yeah, I should take off. Have fun with Prince Charming here,” he sneers, gritting his teeth.
He cast a quick, pointed glare at Kageyama before turning to leave, his hands shoved into his pockets.
Kageyama watched as Oikawa walked away, his smile growing as soon as he was out of sight. He turned his attention back to you, his expression softening.
“So, what do you want to do now, princess?”
“Make up for lost time.” You take his hand and pull him up the steps and into your house.

Hold On (pt. 3)
link to part two
cw: discussion of attempted overdose (not super detailed though), super angsty, kinda guilt-trippy (sorta unintentionally?)
a/n: oikawa realizing he’s an ass was kinda fun to write tbh guys. part four is gonna be out pretty much in the next hour, i’m on a roll
The moment those words came out of your mouth, Oikawa's anger vanished instantly. He was now hit with a wave of guilt and surprise. He took a step back, his expression filled with remorse.
“W-..What..What do you mean? The reason you're alive?”
You place a hand over your mouth.
“I uhm, I didn't mean to say that,” you mutter, looking away from him.
His heart was beating rapidly as he watched you place your hand over your mouth. The words you spoke, paired with your actions and the look in your eyes, sent a wave of realization over Oikawa. His eyes widened.
“Wait, are you- are you saying that Kageyama saved your life? How?”
“I was,” you sigh, clenching your fists to ground yourself, “having a hard time in high school and I just felt like I couldn’t take it anymore so I… I took some pills. But, Tobio found me and he kinda never left… He kept me from ever wanting to do it again. Like I said, the reason I'm alive.”
“Wait a minute. You- you really tried to…”
He couldn't even finish his sentence. The thought of losing you, to your own hand, made his heart ache. The guilt and remorse filled his entire being.
“Yeah well high school was rough for everyone,” you murmur softly.
He just continued to stare at you. He couldn't believe what you had tried to do. The thought of losing you... it was too much to bear.
“Why did you never tell me? All those years we knew each other…why didn't you tell me something like that?”
“We were never friends Toru. I had no reason to think you'd care at all.”
Those words felt like a knife to his heart. Maybe it was true that you two were never friends, but that didn't mean he didn't care. He had always cared, maybe a bit too much, about you.
“That's not true. I would have cared. If you had told me something like that, I would've cared. I- I'm sorry. I didn't know. I didn't know what he had done for you.”
He then paused for a moment before a thought seemed into his mind.
“Can I ask you something?”
“I guess.”
He hesitated for a moment, unsure if it was appropriate to ask. He took a step closer to you, his expression solemn. He had to know.
“Was it because of me?”
Your breathing comes out shaky as you recall how Oikawa had treated you in both middle in highschool. You weren’t sure how to answer, you knew the answer, but you didn’t know if the man you were meant to marry should have to carry this no matter how much you loathed him. You take a deep breath and nod.
His heart shattered upon hearing you confirm that it was his fault. He took another step closer to you, his hands clenched into fists as guilt washed over him. He couldn't believe that he had caused you so much pain, it was too much to bear.
“God dammit. I'm- I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry for causing you so much pain that you…”
“Don’t think about it too much, Toru. It’s been years.”
He sighed heavily. He knew he couldn't just not think about it. The guilt was eating him alive.
“How can I not think about it? Goddammit, why did I have to be such a... such an arrogant, selfish jerk?”
“This is why I never wanted to say anything.”
He closed his eyes, taking a deep, shaky breath. Your words hit him like a punch to the gut. The thought of you not wanting to say anything to spare him the added guilt and pain made him hate himself even more.
“Why? Why didn't you want to say anything? Shouldn't you be mad at me? Why try to protect me from guilt when it's my damn fault?”
“I wasn't trying to protect you exactly, but I have to marry you, that would probably have gone easier if you didn't know this.”
He winced. He couldn't exactly argue with that.
“Right... because we have to marry each other,” he spoke bitterly, “How the hell was I supposed to be married to you if I don't know how much pain I caused you?”
“Well now you know,” you sigh.
He leaned against a nearby tree, sighing heavily. He felt like he was drowning in guilt and remorse. He never realized the effect his actions had on you.
“Yeah,” you mutter, “Can we go?”
He nodded slowly, his heart still heavy with guilt. He pushed himself off the tree and started making his way out of the little cove. He walked silently beside you, his expression somber.

Hold On (pt. 2)
cw: just super angsty, this is mostly just a long argument about kageyama.
a/n: sorry about the lowkey cliffhanger moment, i felt like being dramatic lol. part three will be out tomorrow! thanks for reading :)
link to part one
As you walk, the rain hides the tears that spill down your cheeks.
Oikawa sat back down and let out a frustrated sigh. He was frustrated at himself, for letting you walk out like that. He was confused, frustrated, and worried. He gripped his hair in frustration and cursed himself. He stayed sitting there, in a flurry of thoughts.
When you arrive, you sit on the grass, leaning against a tree, wishing Kageyama was sitting beside you like he used to. You didn’t always talk, but you didn’t always need to either.
Oikawa continued to sit in the café. He was trying to decide what he should do. He was debating whether he should follow you to make sure you're okay or give you some time alone. After a few more minutes, he couldn't take it anymore. His worry for you overcame his rational thoughts. He got up with a sigh. He pulled up the hood of his jacket and headed out into the rain towards the park. He was hoping he would be able to find you.
“How the hell am I supposed to find her in all of this?” He muttered to himself as he walked faster through the rain.
As memories of your best friend flow through your mind, you stop trying to hold back the tears that have been threatening to spill down your cheeks.
“Please be here. Please don't be anywhere else. Please be safe,” Oikawa muttered the words like a mantra as he walked deeper into the park. He was looking around frantically, searching for you.
He continued walking till he spotted you sitting against a tree. He felt a wave of relief wash over him. He walked towards you, his footsteps quick and light. As he neared you, he could see that you were crying.
“Oh it's you,” you murmur as you look up.
He was glad he found you, but your reaction to seeing him was a jab to his heart. He continued to walk closer to you, his footsteps making sloshing sounds in the damp grass.
“..Yeah. It's me.”
“Did you need something?”
Oikawa reached you and slowly sat down beside you, keeping a bit of a distance. He stared at you, raindrops dripping from his hair and eyelashes.
“I..uh, I just..”
He didn't know what to say.
“Why are you here?” You continue to look at the ground, refusing to meet his gaze.
He let out a frustrated sigh before continuing to speak, his voice laced with irritation.
“Because I was worried about you, idiot. You just walked off without a word, and I didn't know if you were actually planning to run or not. So I followed you here.”
“I told you what I was doing.” Your jaw clenches.
He let out another sigh. His irritation was increasing with each passing second. He wanted to know more about your relationship with Kageyama. He wanted to know why you were so attached to him, he didn’t understand it.
“Yeah, I know that you said you were going here but you didn't... You didn't say why you were going here.”
“I just miss my fucking best friend okay? Is it really that big a deal?”
That triggered something within Oikawa. He gritted his teeth before speaking again.
“Kageyama? That's what this is all about? You're crying and running off to a secluded place like this because you miss Kageyama? Seriously?”
“God, just because you hate him doesn't mean you get to hate our friendship, it means something to me.”
He let out a sharp scoff. His irritation was turning to anger. He clenched his fists, trying to keep his emotions in check. But he couldn't hold back the next words that came out in a biting tone.
“Hate him? I don't hate him. I just can't believe you're crying over him, of all people. You and Kageyama hung out here and it means so much to you? He's cold and rude. Why is he so important?”
Your breath catches in your throat as he speaks.
“I don't understand it. Why are you even crying like this over him? It's stupid. He's just some guy you used to hang out with. Why does he matter so much to you? And why are you going to some spot in the park to cry over him like some lovesick fool? Don't tell me you have feelings for him,” he sneers.
Your tears had practically dried at that point, but came pouring out once more as he continued, as you placed a shaky hand over your mouth in shock.
He didn't expect his words to have that much of an effect on you. He instantly regretted what he said as he watched you cry even more. Seeing tears stream down your face sent a pang of guilt through him.
“Shit,” he sighs, “I didn't mean that.. I didn't mean-”
He looked worried and ashamed of what he said as he started to reach out towards you, intending to comfort you in some way.
You flinch away from him.
“I can't believe I have to marry you,” you snap.
His heart sank more as he watched you flinch away from him. Your words sending a pang of hurt and guilt through him. His hand stayed frozen in mid-air, not reaching you.
“Y-you can't believe…”
He took a shaky breath. He knew he messed up. He didn't even know why he said all those words. Now he was hurting you.
“I am not,” you take a shaky breath, standing up, “a lovesick idiot. Kageyama is not cold or rude. You have no idea what you're talking about and there is no way for you to even begin to fathom what he did for me,” you clench your fists, digging your nails into your palms.
He quickly stood up too. He wanted to apologize, to make things right, but he didn't know how to say the words. So he ended up blurting out something else.
“And you're saying that I don't understand? That I can’t even fathom it? I've known him for years. I've seen how he is. He's a rude, egotistical jerk!”
“He's the reason I'm alive,” you spit back, pushing him.

Hold On
angst, fluff, smut (the whole trio)
characters (all timeskip, not rly cannon): oikawa toru x reader, kageyama tobio x reader, iwaizumi hajime (mentioned)
summary: you grew up with kageyama and oikawa (same year as kageyama). yours and oikawa’s parents both own fairly successful companies, they want to merge them and decide to arrange for you and oikawa to get married to solidify the merge in the public eye. but you’re still in love with kageyama, your best friend, and hold a certain disdain towards oikawa…the wedding is a week away and a surprise appearance could change everything, or will it?
overall cw: nsfw in later chapters (it will be identified and can totally be skipped over, will not be entirely necessary to understanding the plot), cheating (kinda— if you see being ‘engaged’ for an arranged marriage as a relationship), some kinda harsh words on oikawa’s part (not really a warning, more of a head’s up), general emotional distress, mentions of attempted suicide
a/n: hey guys! i personally hate when there are two love interests in a story and you never know what would have happened with one of them… so i will be providing two endings, one for kageyama and one for oikawa so everyone can have closure with either preference lol. also, no, i don’t know why i made the end of the summary sound so dramatic 😭 not entirely sure how many parts this will be yet… we shall see. Hope y’all like part one!
Having just graduated college one year prior, your parents along with Oikawa's, were looking to merge their companies, deciding unilaterally that the best way to solidify it would be to have their children get married. The only problem was that the two of you had hated each other since high school when Oikawa made it his mission to make your life a living hell. You and Oikawa sit across from each other at the coffee shop. Neither of you have said a word in the past 30 minutes.
“It’s raining,” Oikawa spoke softly.
“Yeah,” you mutter back.
Oikawa continued staring out of the window before looking back at you. Silence fills the air between the two of you again.
"..So. Our wedding is next week…" Oikawa spoke up as he looked at you.
“Next week,” you repeat, staring out the window.
He hummed in response, leaning back and crossing his arms. He stayed quiet for another few minutes till he spoke up again.
"Isn't it crazy how we're already getting married and we haven't seen each other in four years?"
“Yeah, crazy.”
He let out a forced laugh for a moment before going quiet again. He shifted in his seat, the silence burying its uncomfortableness in his mind.
"..How's your knee been doing?"
“Fine,” you reply curtly, hoping he’ll drop it.
"Don't lie. I know your knee still isn't able to handle much physical stress after…"
“After you pushed me?” you clench your jaw.
"I didn’t think you’d fall that hard,” he mutters, “Your knee still can't take much physical stress, y/n. You really should be more careful with it."
You scoff and grit your teeth in frustration. He continued to stare at you with a disapproving look on his face.
"..I just want you to be careful with your knee, y/n. You've always been too stubborn and ignorant about it."
“God that is fucking rich coming from you.”
Annoyance spread across his face, eyes squinting at you judgmentally. A look you were all too used to.
"I swear to god, if I see you overworking your knee again I'll chain your leg to a chair."
“I'm not overworking shit.”
"That's a lie and you know it, y/n. I know you've been running laps."
“What? Are you stalking me now?”
"I'm not stalking you. I saw you when I was hanging out with Iwa-chan."
“I need to run Toru,” you mutter.
"You don't need to run. You need to give it a break, you idiot!"
“No I do,” you clench your jaw, “and you certainly don’t get to tell me what to do when it was your fault.”
He slams his hands on the table.
“Can you not cause a scene?” You roll your eyes.
He leaned back with a frustrated sigh. He grumbled quietly under his breath. You continue looking out the window in silence thinking about middle and high school when you used to run with your old best friend, Kageyama. It’s one of the few things you have left that you can do that makes it feel like he’s still around. The routine is a small comfort, but a comfort nonetheless and certainly a necessary one. Oikawa watches you go quiet and look out the window. He could practically see the thoughts rushing through your head.
“I need to go,” you mutter, standing up.
He panicked a bit as he watched you get up. He quickly grabbed your wrist to stop you.
"Wait, where are you going?!"
“I can't be around you right now.”
His grip on your wrist tightened. He had a worried look on his face.
"What do you mean you can't 'be around me' right now? Where are you going?"
“Somewhere personal, don't worry I won't run there,” you practically spit the words at him.
He flinched at the venom in your words.
"Y/n, just tell me where you're going. Please?" he spoke pleadingly.
“It has nothing to do with you so drop it.”
He clenched his jaw. He was getting frustrated again.
"I'm not going to just 'drop it'. You might be going off to somewhere dangerous. I'm worried about you!"
“That’s new,” you scoff, “I’m just going to the park... there's a hidden cove through some trees where I…” you pause contemplating saying that you went there with Kageyama but decide against it, “spent a lot of time in high school. Can you let me go now please?” You tug your arm away from his grasp.
“Just...promise me you won't do anything dangerous. It's not safe to go to isolated places like that on your own, y'know?"
“Yeah, whatever Toru.” You walk out of the café.
He was about to protest, to stop you from leaving, but he didn't. He just watched you walk towards the exit with a conflicted expression on his face. He was worried about you, but he didn't know what to do. The last thing he wanted was for you to push him away again.
"Hey, wait-"
He let out a sigh. He was too slow. You were already gone.
