Furniture from the Street
We just picked up a small shelf from the street where a neighbor had put it out after a garage sale with a sign, "Everything Free!" I cleaned it up with the last dregs in an old can of Endust, then used my furniture repair marker set to "paint" a new edge where the original veneer had peeled off. It ended up looking better than the other shelf. I'm using it to replace at least one set of plastic drawers we've had forever. It's going to be storage for my art supplies. Fortuitously, I started organizing them last week, so now I have a good place to put them!

Christmas Music
I like Christmas music, as long as it doesn't swaddle me to death as it wraps up a story of a little bitty bitty baby! Why?
First, those "Loo-la, loo-lay" songs tend to have dull or unsingable parts for altos like me, while the sopranos (and tenors) soar - sometimes TOO high.
Second, as twice-bereaved parents, we find anything about babies that coincides with our boys' birthdays and anniversaries more emotional than you'd expect. If you have never experienced the pain of losing a child, you can't imagine how that pervades your life! I hope you never find out!
Finally, I believe the Christmas story is richer than a "baby is born" story. It is the story of God becoming human; nothing less than "The Incarnation." Traditionally, I've conceived this as is stated in the first chapter of the Gospel of John; "the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." Since joining the New Mexico Black Lawyers Association, and having been honored to have been chosen as our third Vice President, I am actively seeking a metaphor that doesn't equate darkness with negative connotations.

Today's 52 Word Reflection
Ever since I found a book of 52-word daily reflections in a Little Free Library, I have tried to write one every day. Today's was easy, and I think self-descriptive.
EQNX
On today’s jazz radio show,
my Facebook friend started
her weekly calendar
with this Library show.
Didn’t know who they were.
I looked them up, and found
what turned out to be
a whole different iteration.
Still glad we’d abandoned
our original plans, and
the next two or three,
for the best music in town.

Welcome
I never quite believe it, even though weather forecasting these days is about like checking the arrival board at the airport, but here is the first real snow of the season in Albuquerque. Just yesterday, my friend Andrea and I walked all around Montgomery Park in the lightest of jackets, and today, a sky full of clouds, wet pavement and snow falling! Welcome to New Mexico, and my blog!
