Facebook Bans A Breast Cancer Ad Campaign For Violating Nudity Rules
Facebook has received tremendous backlash after banning images from an Australian non-profit’s breast cancer campaign. While nudity and obscene content should definitely be prohibited from being posted online, is it really obscenity in this case or is it the spread of awareness that is being curbed? Facebook users are strictly prohibited from posting images of breasts, especially that of the nipple. Keeping the same in mind, the campaign images display images of people hiding the nipple while exposing the bare operated area of the breast, without the nipple.
Run by the Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) in association with Baker’s Delight, the ads feature topless photos of breast cancer survivors in which they're covering themselves with baked goods. Not only do these images speak strongly of the struggles of people suffering from breast cancer but also empower others suffering from cancer to fight against it.
In fact, this cause raised a total of 1.6 million dollars last year that was invested towards the welfare of cancer patients and their treatments. Facebook, being a massive social media platform to promote crucial causes like these, needs to rethink its stand. The ads display postmastectomy scars, revealing the raw truth of breast cancer and its effects, and also instilling a ray of hope to survive, among cancer patients at the same time.
According to reports Facebook had initially approved the ads but decided to reject them last minute. It was only expected for users to criticize this unreasonable stand taken by the social media giant. Cancer is known to be one of the most fatal diseases and if a popular social media platform decides to keep mum about its harsh truth, it becomes all the more difficult for campaigners to promote their cause.
We definitely feel that Facebook should revisit its decision. What are your thoughts?
