Are people still tumbling??
I recently fell into a deep hole of reading my old posts circa 2009. I used to be WAAAAYYYY too forthcoming on this website :) But also, it’s fun to read all the memories. We had a lot of fun friends <3

And Week 1 is complete! Currently writing from Franklin, NC (yes, already into my second state!).
The photo above is from my first day, April 1st, making it to the top of Springer Mountain, the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. Not super cute, but at least it’s official! After 6 miles of the approach trail, I hiked another 8 to my first campsite on Hawk Mountain. Now I’m at mile 102, taking my first “nero” day (near-zero miles day).
To be honest it feels like it’s been longer than 8 days. In the best way! I’ve met a lot of phenomenal people and seen some amazing views. I’ve also gotten my official trail name! A sweet trail grandpa by the name of Roc Steady told me my trail name should be Sunshine (and how could I refuse?). So there it is. Much better than the proposed name Lobstah (endorsed by my Massachusetts hiking companions after a particularly bad sunburn…).
One of the coolest experiences so far has been staying in a number of different hostels. I think this has been where I’ve had my most interesting conversations. Also where I’ve met some of my favorite hikers so far, including Rucker, Tough Love, and Riddles. But also where I’ve met some of my favorite hiker pups, of which there are plenty. And they are all precious. Hiker dogs are the true MVPs of the AT.
When not in hostels, I’m either at a shelter (a bare bones wood structure, usually near a water source) or tenting at a campsite. I haven’t yet decided my preference. Some hikers only tent and refuse to use shelters (admittedly they are known for mice), while others swear by shelters (there’s an advantage for not having to set up a tent after a long day of trekking). Personal preference to be determined.
One of the most comforting realizations is that a lot of people are also figuring this out for the first time. While researching prior to my flight to Georgia, it seemed like everyone was already a thru hiking expert. Which, I realize now, makes total sense given that they’d already finished their hikes! Folks I’ve met so far have all the same questions about gear, lodging, etc. as me. And we’re all doing just fine.
That said, for anyone following my hike plan (i.e. Mom and Dad), I’m one full day ahead of schedule! Don’t know that that will last, but so far I’m feeling pretty good and making more miles than expected.
On to Tennessee!
✌🏼️ Sunshine

FRIENDS. help me make important life decisions!! XD
ONE.
My bag containing my license was stolen in Prague. I still have my old one so I can technically exchange it for a NY ID. should I do this? does it really matter?
TWO.
the gallery I am interning at asked if I wanted to stay on through the summer, to which I politely responded in better words ‘no, i need to make some money.’ so they offered me a part time position at $15/hr for up to 20 hours a week where I can work some of the time from home. HOWEVER, this means NOT applying to other potentially better (paying) jobs (which I may not even get) and potentially NOT doing an internship at the MET (which again, I may not even get, and which I don’t hear back from for a few weeks). The MET internship pays a $3750 stipend for the whole summer, working 5 days a week (35 hrs), while this gallery job would pay only a bit less for way less time worked (assuming I work the full 20 hours). but working at the MET would be SO GREAT. thoughts??
THREE.
NEW YORK OR LONDON FOR NEXT SEMESTER???
when I started this program I was 100% preparing to go to London for my 3rd semester option. then i came to NYC, got lots of jobs and opportunities and connections and decided it would be best for me to stay in NYC and work at those connections and job opportunities and such, since I wouldn’t be able to work in London. also, terrorism is scary and slightly more likely to hit London than NYC, though I’m trying to not let that sway my decision at all but hey there it is. BUT THEN we went to Europe and it was AMAZING and there is SO MUCH to see not only in London (though I could spend every weekend just looking at art in London) but all over Europe (which I will travel to). However if i went to london, i would not be able to work, and I would miss out on an awesome fair in Chicago in September, TEFAF NYC in October, and probably Miami at the beginning of December. And most people in my program are arguing against it because they’re like you’re going to meet all these people and make all these connections and then leave and you’ll have missed out on a semester’s worth of opportunities in a city where you can actually work. The way I’m looking at it, I am 23 years old, and I have literally the rest of my life to work, and I don’t think a semester in London is going to hurt my chances of getting a job, it might just happen a little later when I come back to the states. I think I’ve honestly already made up my mind about this one, but i still need some reassurance or advice or whatever!
so yeah. first world probs. but i’d love to hear your thoughts :)
