20 things I learned turning 20: 1. Give up on trying to impress people. Let them take you as you are or leave it. 2. It’s okay to have days off. But nothing will make you feel more alive than doing things you love, so don’t drown in laziness. 3. Change hurts and when you’re in a process you may not be able to see it, but you are growing. 4. Be kind. You are incredibly blessed and have so much light to share. 5. Set goals. Don’t let yourself be defined by your circumstances. Don’t wait for things to come along, go out of your way to achieve greatness. 6. People are amazing and you will need friends in your life. Make sure to pick the right ones. They will always be there, no matter how far you are apart. 7. Work out, it will make you feel so much better. Do it because you are thankful you can, not because you ate the wrong thing. 8. Appreciate your family. They won’t be there forever. 9. Grades aren’t everything, but working hard always gets rewarded. 10. Find yourself first before you start looking for a soul mate. They can wait. 11. Comparison kills confidence. No one has the same way in life, so stop comparing someone else’s success to your own. They will never be the same. 12. Talk to strangers, be spontaneous, explore. This makes the best stories. 13. Do more of what makes you come alive, and share it with others. Let your passion set you on fire and then light others up, too. This world has grown cold. 14. Forgiveness can heal a broken heart. Don’t take revenge. 15. Take time for the little things, give flowers to strangers, buy a homeless man a meal, compliment people, write a letter to your grandparents. It can change more than you think. 16. Money is probably the biggest cause of unhappiness and injustice. Don’t attach your heart to it. 17. The right kind of love will save you. 18. You are capable of so much more than you know. Discover your talents. Use your gifts to do good. You can change this world. 19. Be kind to animals. 20. Reflect on your past. Set priorities for your future. Enjoy the moment. You’ve got one life, live it to the fullest.

I can’t wait to teach my kids to love life. To not hate the rain when it falls, but to run out without an umbrella and without a coat and just dance. I can’t wait to show them the beauty of the world in the middle of all the pain. To venture them out into the unknown. To experience the beauty of standing at the top of a mountain, but also the incredible experience of standing in the middle of a city with people flooding all around you, making you feel so minuscule but also so exhilarating. I’m so excited to love. love, love, love. To hold them until they fall asleep, and watch marathons of their favorite movies when they’re feeling sick. To go on long drives and blast Disney music the whole way. To laugh. to laugh laugh laugh. Laugh at life’s little mistakes, rather than getting worked up about them. Life is so wonderful, and growing up I often forgot that. I can’t wait to change that for my kids, to allow them to feel free to be who they are. To let them know that the only thing that is stopping them from changing the world is themselves. To show them how proud I am for pushing through the hard times, and still remaining thankful. I can’t wait.
Children are the future, and I’m so excited for mine. (via melaniejoyous)
