[TRANS] DAY6’s Talk, Thoughts on Debuting in Japan and Musical Roots ‘Melodies and Harmonies are Universal’
Source
Now the world’s boiling topic 5-member band, DAY6’s made a debut in Japan with the single ‘If~We Meet Again’ (3/14 release).
Debuted in Korea in 2015 with the 1st mini album ‘The Day’ that recorded 2nd on US Billboard’s Worldwide Album Charts, they are doing activities that take the world into consideration. 4/5 members are in charge of the main vocal. The members who are personally involved in songwriting and their genre-less musicality is also this band’s charm.
This is Real Sound’s first interview with all the members. We talked about the band concept, the production of the single ‘If~We Meet Again,’ and their impression of the Japanese music scene.
“We all like different genres of music” (JAE)
—Congratulations on your Japanese debut!
Sungjin (Vo/Gt): Thank you very much! From now on we are planning to deliver good music and live performances.
— Ooh, you are used to interviews.
Wonpil (Key/Syn/Vo): He has a great passion for music (laughs).
Sungjin: That’s right (laughs).
— (laughs). I would like to hear about the band’s musicality etc., but when I check your work so far, it’s impressive that there are diverse genres, including rock, electronic, and R&B. Is this on purpose?
Jae (Gt/Vo/Rap): Although it is not particularly intended, the biggest reason is that we make the songs ourselves. The lyrics are mainly made by YOUNG K, but we are all involved in making the melodies. Everyone likes different music genres, thus by carrying these various respective tastes, naturally we can make a wide variety of music.
— I see. So, what about your roots?
Sungjin: For me, rather than genre, I like emotional music where the vocal stands out more. Recently I’ve been listening to Ed Sheeran.
Dowoon (Dr): Being in charge of drums, originally I liked jazz and instrumental music, but since DAY6 is formed I’ve grown to listen to a wide range of music. There is a charm to the 4 vocals, naturally there are more opportunities to listen to the vocals. I’m being taught about various artists by the members. I like the Japanese band RADWIMPS. The soundtrack for the movie ‘Your Name’, not only ‘Zenzensense,’ was wonderful. I have also listened to other songs before ‘Your Name’.
Jae: I like music where the artist’s sensitivity is transmitted. Right now, I like Nothing But Thieves and Daniel Caesar.
Wonpil: The band music that I grew to like since high school was Radiohead. I’ve passed adolescence*, but during that time I carried a lot of internal conflicts, and that [music] is perfect for that feeling. After that I listened to various kinds of music, for Japanese bands, I listened to ONE OK ROCK first. I like all the members. I also listen to [Alexandros],** Yonezu Kenshi, and Hoshino Gen. Yonezu Kensin’s ‘Haiirotoao’ is also beautiful.
*literal trans is puberty
**yes, this is stylized as [Alexandros]
Young K: When I was a child I listened to Western music. Kanye West, Maroon 5, Jay Z, etc. After that I became interested in pop punk such as SUM 41 and Bowling For Soup, and even listened to Coldplay and ONE REPUBLIC. It is a wide variety [of music] (laughs).
— Certainly you guys have quite scattered preferences. It has been about 2 and a half years since you guys started your activities, what are your remaining impressions?
Sungjin: First of all, I thought “Has it really been two and a half years?” (laughs).
Wonpil: You feel that it was longer.
Young K: Because there was a 6-year training period before that. When we unveiled our sound*, we did busking gigs and I have a lot of memories from that time. We were not on TV yet, but a lot of people gathered and sang together to our songs.
*literal trans is sound source
Sungjin: The biggest concert was in Seoul’s Olympic Hall. A lot of people came.
— It is amazing to have gone there in about two years.
Young K: Our luck was good.
Sungjin: We also worked very hard though (laughs).
— So, about the Japanese debut song ‘If~We Meet Again’. What kind of theme did you compose this with?
Young K: We worked together with a composer who often does composition, but there is a theme that ‘I want to make an energetic rock song.’ In addition, I wanted to add a playful arrangement and sounds that were never made before. I think that because SUNGJIN and WONPIL participated in the middle of the production, a good song was completed.
Sungjin: It was very straightforward, it became a song that expresses wild emotions.
Dowoon: The fastest [song] beat that we had to this day. I’ll do my best (laughs).
Jae: (laughs). I’m stuck with the guitar interlude part. It is a part that must be expressed sensitively and I want to listen to it properly in oder not to harm the atmosphere of the entire song. It is a song that made me practice a lot.
Wonpil: In the bridge part, we used both synth and sampling sounds. It became a very unique sound and I think we were able to express a new expression.
— About the lyrics?
Young K: As Sungjin said, it is a song with a straightforward feeling, and I think it is not interesting to express (the lyrics) as it is. Rather than depicting a straightforward sorrow, I wanted to write about breaking free from grief. The main character of this song meets again with his parted lover by coincidence, but the character thinks “I want to pass by you as it is.” If not, the person will think “I want to turn back again.”….. I spontaneously follow that kind of thing, I wanted to include that painful moment.
— “If~We Meet Again” is the OST for the drama “Repeat~10 Months to Change Fate~” (Yoimuri TV・Nippon TV). The contents of the lyrics that we just talked about, matches the drama’s storyline.
Young K: Originally DAY6’s song was made about half a year before we received the offer to sing the OST for the drama. It is a strange feeling that it fits the drama’s theme (laughs).
— Speaking of, do you watch Japanese dramas on a regular basis?
Wonpil: Yes. The drama where Hoshino Gen starred recently.
— “The Full-Time Wife Escapist”.
Wonpil: That’s right!
Dowoon: I also like Yankumi from Gokusen.
Young K: I often watch anime. Currently I’m watching ‘Re:Zero — Starting Life in Another World.” When I was a child, I loved Doraemon movies. If Doraemon was my friend, it is my dream come true!
Japan has a mature band culture (YOUNG K)
— (Laughs). Please tell us about the coupling song, ‘Baby, it’s okay’. It has a different feel from ‘If~We Meet Again~’, it is a song of R&B taste.
Sungjin: I wanted to put in songs that has a different charm from the energetic first song.
— There is a wide range of musicality, therefore there must be a lot of techniques needed for the performances as well.
Sungjin: It’s exactly the way it is (laughs).
Young K: It’s always a challenge.
Dowoon: Therefore it’s interesting! Eh? (To the members) Don’t you think it’s interesting?
Sungjin: (laughs). It might be interesting, but it is difficult.
Jae: In terms of guitar, it is necessary to use the arm for strong picking for band music, and to use gentle wrists to play soft songs. The gap between the two is really big, and I’m still getting used to it (laughs). In comparison with sports, it’s like after playing tennis, I start to play badminton, and I feel like returning to tennis again.
Dowoon: (laughs). Because there are various genres in one song.
Young K: ‘If~We Meet Again’ is a blend of rock, pop and hiphop. It’s a mix.
— Are you mixing various genres on purpose?
Wonpil: I think there are some parts that were intended to.
Sungjin: It’s fun and interesting to compose songs that are not going in the same direction, but have fresh different elements added to it.
— I see. What impressions do you have towards the Japanese music scene?
Young K: Japan’s music scene is a really big market. To take one step towards that place and to be able to release the first single is an honor. Moreover, Japan has a mature band culture. There are a lot of things that can be absorbed by working inside this place, and I think there will be a chance to grow.
— ‘If~We Meet Again’ is likely to be a song that is popular among Japanese rock fans.
Young K: I’ve been listening to Japanese music since long ago, thus I think I naturally became influenced from it.
— Is becoming a band that is active all around the world your goal?
Sungjin: I think I want to make music that can heal people and music that many people can sympathize with.
Young K: Melodies and harmonies are universal, it crosses words and borders. I think that’s the charm of music.
Wonpil: Sometimes we also cover songs from various countries.
— I think that many listeners are touched by DAY6’s music for the first time through this single. What do you think DAY6’s charm is?
Young K: First of all, there are 4 main vocals. I don’t think there are many bands like that, I think it is one of our characteristics.
Wonpil: As Jae said earlier, the fact that all the members like different genres of music is also one of DAY6’s charms. All the members are involved in the music composition, therefore we can write and compose various melodies, including tempo and sound, thus we can’t imagine what song will be born next. I think it is also connected to the fans’ anticipation of “What will happen next?” There are acoustic songs, songs of rock taste, songs that use synth pads, therefore we continuously challenge ourselves. Now, I want to express neo-soul and R&B as a band. I also love The Internet, etc.
— I will be looking forward to it. Not only your musicality, the member’s personalities also differ from each other.
Young K: [The personalities] are very different (laughs). It is balanced just right.
Dowoon: I am in peace (laughs).
Young K: Including the time we spent as trainees, the time that we have spent together is long. We have now reached a mutual understanding and consideration. There is nothing to fight about.*
*literal trans: There is nothing to hit.
Wonpil: Even when we clash [opinion] about musical things, I don’t think it’s a bad thing.
Sungjin: Yup. Also, in the case where we have differences in opinions, there will be no problems as we will use the majority vote system (laughs)
— Lastly, is there a message you want to give to the fans?
Sungjin: We will begin activities in Japan earnestly, but we will continue to deliver wonderful music without breaking expectations. Please give us a lot of love and support.
Jae: Ever since I was a child, I have been listening to Japanese band music, and have been influenced by them. This time, we want to become a band that will influence other people.
Wonpil: I think it’s because of the fans that we are able to do activities in Japan in this way. I am thankful. I think that we can further spread our musical range from now on, and I want to work so that I can meet the fans frequently.
Young K: I don’t know what lies in wait in DAY6’s future, but my heart is filled with expectations now. It is okay for you (fans) to have expectations for us.
Dowoon: I will do my best and work hard! Please give us your support!

[TRANS] JYP’s masterpiece DAY6* ”Certainly someday, live at Budokan, the sacred place of bands”
*could also mean JYP’s true strength DAY6/JYP’s talented DAY6
Source
The talk of the world today, the great 5-member boyband DAY6. They are the first band from Korean’s prestigious JYP Entertainment, where TWICE, 2PM, and GOT7 belongs to, who debuted with the album ’The Day’ on September of 2015 which charted 2nd on US Billboard World Chart, delivering magnificent results since the beginning. Last year, in 2017, the “Every DAY6” project was launched which includes the release of a new song and solo performances every month.
Also, the songs that the members wrote and composed themselves are all truly good songs. While crossing through various genres such as rock, emo, post-rock and R&B, taking the potential of 4 main vocals within, and having a high degree of freedom, the potential spread for expression are limitless. To have keyboard and synthesizer, the multilayered band sound, the beauty of melody, the dramatic nature of the lyrics, is also a noteworthy point. Giving a sense of scale that can become a stadium band, certainly the 5 precisely “talented” people, are expected to be active in various places, starting from Japan to all over the world.
They finally debuted in Japan with the single “If~We Meet Again~” on March 14 (Wednesday). BARKS who introduces the latest music all over the world regardless of country, of course offered an interview. Although it is an honor to be the first place for an interview in Japan, we always respect each other during the interview, the excellent teamwork and the attitude that these 5 people who are sincerely faced with music is impressive. (BARKS Editorial Team)
■ We are the ‘team’ that believes in each other
— First of all, please tell us about your members, ‘which member is best at what’ and their role in the band.
Sungjin (Vo&Gt): So from me, I will introduce the member next to me. Dowoon is, a person who has such familiarity that I can get comfortable with even when we meet for the first time, I think that is his strength. Should I say his role in the group is a naive son? (Laughs)
Wonpil (Key&Syn&Vo): It is suitable. Or, the youngest child.
Dowoon (Drum): I will forever be indebted [to you*]
*you in here is literally translated as older brothers (hyungs).
Sungjin: For that, I always work hard.
Dowoon: As expected, you (Sungjin) understand myself well! (laughs) Jae is a wonderful guitarist, but also is a vocalist who has a wonderful sweet singing voice to listen to. With that singing voice that attracts a person’s heart immediately from the intro of a song, he’s called the ‘Intro Fairy’, it’s very instinctive…. the music beast!
Sungjin: A fairy and a beast? (Laughs)
Dowoon: Ah… the music fairy (laughs).
Jae: To be honest, I have no idea what Dowoon is saying!(laughs) As for Young K, everyone has said something like: “You have such visuals.”
Sungjin: Because Young K has adapts to his environments easily, I think he can survive even if he goes to a deserted island by himself.
Wonpil: I understand. He is a person who is good at self-management.
Jae: Young K is a person who pushes on towards a target after it has been established. Studying music as well as singing and practicing musical instruments exceedingly, he is a truly hardworking person.
Dowoon: In addition, [he’s] also a real beast (laughs).
Young K (Ba&Vo&Rap): Everyone really understands me well (laughs). There is only one Wonpil in this world. A person who you can never meet again.*
*In your life
Wonpil: (nods deeply)
Young K: I was signaled by Wonpil to say it now (laughs). It’s a funny story, Wonpil is the most gentle person. For example, if a slight discord starts within the team, he will always face it calmly. When asked “who is the mother within the group?”, I think it’s Wonpil. However, he cannot cook (laughs).
Wonpil: I absolutely cannot do that (laughs). Sungjin-hyung is everyone’s mediator. He’s good at organizing things, a very neat person. Also, he is passionate, even when the members are all talking together, he will sing and play the music with his whole heart and soul.
Sungjin: You see it well.
*spoken casually
— Everyone is truly friendly with each other, you can trust each other.
Dowoon: Yes, we are a team that believes in each other.
■ The greatest strength is empathy and energy.
— DAY6 is in the form of a band, however in Korea there are many images of dance and vocal groups. In everyone’s case, was it originally band-oriented?
Sungjin: Jae and Dowoon had a feeling that they wanted to perform as a band from the beginning.
Jae & Dowoon: (nods)
Wonpil: Originally Jae played the guitar, Dowoon played the drum.
Sungjin: Me, Young K and Wonpil thought that we would like to express as vocalists but as we started as a band with Jae and Dowoon I began to listen to music from various bands, and DAY6’s shape was made.
Wonpil: Since I was always playing the piano all the time, I became in charge of the keyboard and synthesizer.
Young K: I was good at the guitar, but I started to play the bass after joining DAY6.
— As I mentioned earlier, not just someone, but because everyone are hard workers, this wonderful band can be made. 4/5 members of DAY6 carry the main vocal, and you guys wrote and composed all your music, but the strength that you can think within yourselves, I can’t yield this much! What are your commitments?
Jae: Because we are making our songs ourselves, we can really express what we like and what we want to do with our music. By doing that, I think that I am happy from the bottom of my heart even on stage.
Sungjin: And the greatest strength is empathy and energy. Young K’s songwriting as well, I think that many people can empathize with Young K’s lyrics.
Young K: (gutsy pose with a smile)
Sungjin: We’ve been striving to convey the energy of 5 people that we have accumulated so far through live performances.
Wonpil: Our music and band sound is based on ‘rock’, however by overlapping the various personalities from each of the 4 vocals, I also think that we can express music that has a special uniqueness that didn’t exist before.
Young K: Even though leader Sungjin is the lead vocal, the fact that all the members can be the main vocal, is a strength.
Dowoon: I think what these 4 people have said is true. Furthermore, I think we are very honest with each other, and it is also great that we can be close with sincerity without adornment.
— So, to make your music and live performances better, you expressed your thoughts and imagination with a good meaning.
Sungjin: That’s right. We will properly express our thoughts, and we will always pick the majority [opinion].
— So it is through democracy.
Young K: That is very important, we are a very healthy group (smile).
— I listened to a variety of DAY6’s songs, and I felt that you combined various music genres in a distinctive way,* but how is it actually?
*the literal trans is ‘you sublimated various genres indepedently
Sungjin: For us, each of the 5 members likes completely different genres. As we get influenced by various music from all around the world, [our] music slowly becomes music which combines various elements like you said.
— Are you also influenced by Japanese artists?
Wonpil: For me, nowadays, I am addicted to Yonezu Kenshi. Since he was originally based from the band sound, he is very enlightening as a musician.
Young K: ONE OK ROCK is also cool.
Dowoon: All the members like them.
Wonpil: I am also listening to Mr. Children and Hoshino Gen.
Young K: Also, RADWIMPS. I learned about their music from the movie “Your Name,” when you listen to their music, the scenery vividly comes to mind.
— I feel that it’s possible to feel the same with DAY6’s music.
Young K: Really!? Those are very pleasant words.

■ We would like to learn the culture of Japanese bands
— Now, the Japanese debut single’s title track “If~We Meet Again” too, has a beautiful melodic singing voice and a fusion of emotional band sound will capture hearts with the first listen. Young K wrote the lyrics, while Sungjin, Young K and Wonpil participated in the composition, what kind of things do you cherish during production and recording?
Wonpil: As we’ll make a Japanese debut with this work, we focused on recording so that it would reach everyone firmly.
Young K: I agree. Also it is an honor that ‘If~We Meet Again’ is also the OST for Japanese drama ‘Repeat~10 months to change fate~’. However, I did not write the song for the drama, but originally I was asked if the song fits the voice of the drama.
— Drifting painfulness in song lyrics are perfect for dramas.
Young K: There is a mysterious feeling when the drama’s footage and our songs overlapped, I was very happy.
Sungjin: It is inspiring. As for me, as I said earlier, since it is an emotional song, I tried to express it more instinctively, wildly, I strive to pierce hearts.
Dowoon: To make use of the song’s wild atmosphere, I also beat the drums while shaking my head when I play this song.
— Even if you watch the music video, that fever will be transmitted.
Dowoon: Ahh, it was good that it was transmitted. I’m happy!
Jae: When recording the guitar parts, I recorded a duet part with Sungjin with a post-rock sense. At first I couldn’t get the feeling I wanted, but in the end, I think I was able to play it with overflowing feelings.
— From the coupling, ‘Baby, it’s okay’ is a number that stirs the heart with straightforward love, I hope that after you guys debuted in Japan, I can hear a lot of good songs from now on.
All: Us too, we are really happy to debut in Japan.
Sungjin: Just like what we’ve done before, we want to continue to change while pursuing new genres, and I think that we would like to show our new appearance more and more in Japan.
— DAY6 are gathering attention from all over the world, are there any dreams that you want to fulfill in Japan?
Sungjin: As a short therm goal, I would like to perform at many live houses in Japan.
Jae: Oh yeah, Japan has a lot of live performances, I would like to learn the Japanese band culture. I think there are a lot of things to learn, I want to absorb and gain a lot of experience.
Dowoon: I want to make friends with Japanese bands,* and I want to exchange** a lot.
*the literal translation is get along well with Japanese bands
**as in cultural exchange
Young K: I agree. I really like anime, so I have a dream that someday DAY6 will be in charge of an anime opening song. Looking at the anime ‘BECK’, we also have expectations that we can grasp a dream like that.
Wonpil: Certainly someday, I would like to perform at the sacred place for bands, the Nippon Budokan.
