Katniss listened to his words. She wrote notes for herself. Small things to help her remember before she wrote them neatly in the book. She wanted the memories of 12 to be passed on even after she was gone. It was weird for Katniss to think about the future because for many years she wasn't sure there would be much of one. Not with how things had been going with the games.
"So the Capital stopped you all from travelling then?" Katniss asked but the answer was clear. The Capital had controlled a lot of people's movements. They had been like rats in their cages.

The earliest things he remembered. If he tried, Clerk Carmine thought he could remember a little of life on the road, of travelling, his father's hand on his shoulder. It wasn't much but it was there, supplemented by the things he'd been told by Billy Taupe, by Barb Azure, by Tam Amber. Carefully, he slid a photo from the stack, clearly one of the oldest ones there, depicting a tall, broad man, stoic looking, but with a glint in his eye, looking at someone just in the corner of the frame, a head of curls and a laughing face.
"My father. Duncan Pewter Clade, and my mother, Annabel Sage Clade. I wasn't born in District Twelve, though it ended up becoming home. We travelled, all of us Covey. Ma got sick when I was a baby, so I can't say I remember much of her. But I remember a little more about my da."

Coriolanus nodded as Lucy Gray spoke. "The people in the Districts are different than I was lead to believe." He told her as he knew many in the Capital saw them as savages. He himself had seen enough during the dark days to know that the Capital Citizens were not as pure as they seemed to be. "The Capital sees you all as the enemy but everyone is trying to survive."
❝ well, i guess you do have a point. ❞ lucy gray admits, brows scrunching confusingly that she actually agrees. a pause as her thoughts drift off momentarily, studying the way he even said this to begin with. then her head lifts and doe eyes concentrate on the other again, ❝ you really feel that way? that we're just humans tryin' to survive? that's how you personally feel too? ❞

Katniss knew she needed help. There were not many people left to tell the stories but she knew they needed to be told. She needed help to fill in the pieces she didn't know. That was why Katniss was willing to listen to others. She wanted to make sure she was doing justice to the fallen.
Katniss took in the man's appearance. It was clear the years were not kind to him. This came as no shock, as life in 12 was never kind. They'd all been through the war but the struggles had started long before. "We should start with the earliest things that you remember."

Clerk Carmine was an old man.
At seventy seven years of age, once fair hair was now a soft grey, face lined with wrinkles, and though he could still play his fiddles with fingers fast as lightning, he wasn't as quick on his feet as he had once been. Still, for someone who had lived all but a few short years of his life in district twelve, he was fairly healthy, not to mention one of the oldest.
And of course, he was the only Covey.
Carefully the old man lowered himself into the seat beside her, hand slipping into the pocket of his overalls before withdrawing a small stack of photographs, many of them weathered with age.
"There's a lot to tell. Where should I start?"

Peeta wished he could help more. It was hard to watch her suffer when he wanted to protect her. "I think some of it is going to stick with us forever. Those we lost will never leave us. It is important that we try to live for them. Even when it is hard." Peeta said. He had lost his entire family in the bombings of 12. All he had left was Katniss. "We are safe now."
Katniss curled up against Peeta. Her fingers grab onto his shirt as if to hold him close to her. "I don't think it's ever going to get easier." Katniss said as even years after all of their trauma, it was haunting her nearly every night. She just wished that she could make the nightmares go away. "I just want to feel safe again."

Katniss wanted to collect all the memories and moments of the people who had been lost. She was determined to save the history of District 12, even though few people remained. She watched as the man approached her. "I am ready to hear whatever it is you can share."

"The Capital treats the Districts like they are animals, and the Districts treat the Capital like Monsters." Coriolanus replied. "At what point does everyone realize that we are all human beings that are trying to survive."
❝ what do you mean? ❞ slender shoulders shrugged after a second, finding that she felt like a confused fawn– uncertain of what anything about that meant. ❝ goin' about this the right way, how? didn't realize there was any right way about it at all in general. ❞

"Having an eye for beauty isn't the same thing as a weakness, except possibly when it comes to you." Peeta whispered as he looked at her.

People aren't so bad. It's what the world does to them. Like what they do in the arena. I think there is a natural goodness born into us all. No, really. You can either cross that line into evil, or not. And it's our life's work to stay on the right side of that line.

Corio looked at her. The swirl of emotions he felt only got amplified from her presence. "It is complicated." He said as he could not sort it out himself. Corio leaned closer as to make it so others would not hear his words. "I am beginning to wonder if we are all going about this the right way."
stepping out in front of the other, a hint of an amused smile graced the songbird's features. a snort sounding from her at his expression that she read on his face from across the room, ❝ what's wrong? you look glum... thought capitol people like you got real joyed about this time of year. ❞

"Always." Peeta told her. He had been telling her the same thing for over a decade. Peeta had the natural instinct to protect her. This was something he had since they were kids that had only increased during the games. He wanted to take care of her. Peeta went over to the bed and slid in next to her. He instinctively kissed Katniss on the top of her head.
Katniss calmed at the sound of Peeta's voice. There was a safeness that came with him being here, and that the sound was him and not a stranger. The man had never let anything bad happen to her. Not in all the time that they had known each other. "Can you lay with me?"
