The Tomb of Time, Chapter 33: Defeat in Victory
With Max rescued and Jefferson destroyed, the battered half-bloods lick their wounds and try to plan for what's next.
Recent revelations make that difficult.

The Tomb of Time Band AU
My good friend Kait put forth the idea of my demititan OCs making a band, and that idea took root in my brain like a parasitic worm, so I made a few album cover mock-ups with FF14 and Clip Studio Paint! I imagine them primarily doing symphonic rock, with Frieda as the frontman/lead singer, Hunter on percussion, Maya on keyboard/synthesizer, Pierce on bass, and Siren on electric guitar/backup vocals. Their sound would probably have a dark fantasy vibe.
Now if only I knew how to make music to go with these...

Pierce and Siren :) They’ve been close since they first met at five years old, when Siren told off some bullies that were poking fun at Pierce. They trained together and gave each other comfort when the cruelties of demititan childhood became too much to bear alone. As Siren’s developing water powers brought her training into the ocean, Pierce practiced ceaselessly until she perfected her first constellation attunement, Pisces. The swift fins and waterbreathing this gave her let their training together continue, to Siren’s delight.
Flash forward to age 21, and they’re just as close, both serving as captains under the demititan queen. Siren knows just how to lift Pierce’s spirits when she’s feeling down, and Pierce listens to Siren’s latest discoveries from her hyperfixation on mortal culture. Both privately think the other could do much better in terms of romantic interests… like, perhaps, each other?
Only, Pierce thinks Siren’s constant flirting is just how she is with everyone. And Siren thinks Pierce isn’t interested because she never reacts to the flirting… As it turns out, even isolated from popular culture, the trope of useless WLW is alive and well :)

I have an oc question for you. what would each of your ocs starter pokemon companion be? (not limited to just starter pokemon btw! can be any pokemon)
Good question! Let’s see here…
Frieda: Celebi
Now obviously starting with a legendary isn’t fair or balanced, but in Frieda’s case I simply have to make an exception. As a child of Kronos with incredible power, it only makes sense to give her one of the very few time-themed Pokemon. Celebi is a better choice for her than Dialga, both for her love of plants and Celebi’s whimsical and friendly nature. This poor girl deserves a friend that will love her unconditionally.
Runner-up: Dialga
Hunter: Machop
This one’s a pretty straightforward choice. Hunter’s all muscle and loves hitting things, so what better Pokemon than one that’s all muscle and loves hitting things? A notable trait of Machop and its evolutions is that they never tire, which fits perfectly with Hunter’s near-endless endurance. They’d make great training partners, and maybe even sparring partners.
Runner-up: Makuhita
Maya: Abra
Abra’s tendency to sleep all day and only being able to use Teleport makes it a pretty poor starting choice for anyone, particularly so for impatient Maya. Long term though, it’s an excellent match. Alakazam is incredibly intelligent, something Maya values highly in a partner, and its strong psychic powers pair well with her own arcane abilities. Importantly, both Alakazam and Maya have flawless memories, a crucial point of commiseration. Now if only she can find a trading partner that she trusts to trigger the evolution…
Runner-up: Inkay
Pierce: Staryu
The first three picks were easy; this is where it got tricky. There’s not many star-themed Pokemon that aren’t legendaries (only Frieda gets a starter legend), so I thought, why not go with one that has a connection to her best friend too? I like to imagine Baby Pierce and Baby Siren were playing together on the beach one day when Pierce found a Staryu, and was immediately smitten. “They’re perfect!” she’d shout, then show an ecstatic Siren. Staryu’s been Pierce’s partner ever since.
Runner-up: Gothita
Siren: Spheal
And this one was hard because of just how many water Pokemon there are! Faced with so much choice, I think Siren would go for aesthetics, and she’d find a Spheal the most adorable thing imaginable. Not that she’d be any less attached to the evolutions; Siren’s Walrein will be a monster to be feared. It’s probably named something like Cuddles.
Runner-up: Marill

The Tomb of Time cast: What do the demititan leaders say (and think) about the others?
Frieda, Daughter of Kronos
Hunter: “She is the hope of our people, the best chance we have at survival. It’s my privilege to serve as one of her Hands. I’ll do whatever I can to ease her burden, even if it means giving my own life.” The isolation of her role has clearly been getting to her lately. She’s been more forward with her advances. Much as it pains me, I have to harden my heart and rebuke her. She’s the symbol our people need. She must be their Queen, and I must be her Hand. It’s too late for us to be anything else.
Maya: “Her grace is a beacon of power and hope. I serve faithfully as her Hand and Memory.” She remains an insecure and emotionally unstable girl beneath a thin veneer of regality. The facade is so weak that I have to assume willful ignorance on the part of the masses. They’re desperate for a Messiah, and without an abrupt change in disposition, I don’t believe she will be one. She lacks the spine to do what is necessary, whatever her assurances to the contrary.
Pierce: “I admire her immensely, both as a warrior and a leader. She’s the model I strive towards in training and my responsibilities as a captain. I’ll follow her into hell itself when the time comes.” Sometimes I see her lingering on the outskirts of communal activities, like training or craft circles. Watching with a hard expression, but never joining. Does she resent how weak we are compared to her? I can’t claim to know her mind; she’s so different from the timid girl she once was, and I didn’t know her then either.
Siren: “The Queen is the strongest of us by orders of magnitude. If we have any chance of surviving, it rests with her. I’ll do whatever I can to make it easier for her.” Since she attained her true power, she’s been a completely different person, so much more composed and confident. She’s gotten a lot hotter too. Not that I’d ever act on that; I’m too far beneath her. I do have my doubts about her plans to save us… Must we become what they say we are? Is there truly no other way?
Hunter, Son of Atlas
Frieda: “My Left Hand, my most trusted confidant, and my deadliest warrior. What more can be said? I rely on him a great deal, and I shudder to think where I would be without him.” I would be long dead without him, likely by my own hand. He’s protected me since long before I donned this accursed crown. If I had even a fraction of his strength and willpower… But he knows perfectly well that I don’t. I can’t even resist the impulse to make unwanted overtures to him… How he must resent me.
Maya: “He’s dimwitted and boorish. We do not get along, save for where the Queen’s welfare is concerned. I’ll grant that he’s efficient and effective, so long as he’s creating corpses or rubble.” Grating as I find him and his tendency to make an utter ass of himself in conversation, he’s the ideal counterbalance to the Queen’s temerity. He’s willing to do whatever is necessary for the cause, even if it means holding her at arm’s length. If she only possessed his resolve…
Pierce: “He’s a damn good warrior, the best we’ve got aside from the Queen. He pushes us every day in training. We’re as skilled as we are because of him.” I’d love to have him with me in battle, but I sure as hell don’t like him. He’s way too hard on the weaker fighters. His ridiculous endurance gives him no perspective on how diverse everyone else’s limits can be. He’s especially dismissive of the girls; he only respects me cause I have a lot of muscle. And stars above, the way he treats Siren…
Siren: “I’m sure everyone else already talked up his muscles and battle skill, and talked down his personality. He’s more complicated than that. He’s harsh because our situation requires it, but he’s always the first to act when one of us needs help. Did anyone mention that? How about his sarcastic wit, or his passion for woodcarving? Didn’t think so.” All that said… I wish I felt like more of a priority to him. Or like a priority at all. I get that his duty to the Queen is important, but it often feels like he’s either avoiding me or looking for excuses to leave. Lately I wonder if he’s with me for ME, or just for the sex. Which is awesome, but… sometimes a girl wants MORE, you know?
Maya, Daughter of Mnemosyne
Frieda: “My Right Hand, the keeper of our people’s memory, and the most dangerous mage in the world. Her counsel and unerring skill in the arcane are incredible boons to both myself, and our cause.” Though she never says it, I feel her judgement every time we interact. She remembers my every misstep better than I do; she knows exactly how ill-suited I am for this. I ask far too much of her to cover for my own shortcomings… Perhaps it’d be better for everyone if she was in charge.
Hunter: “She’s a pretentious bitch, can never resist showing off just how much smarter she is than everyone else. And she’ll hold things over your head that you don’t even kind of remember. And she’s constantly calling me a moron. But she’s loyal to the cause, and deadly with her magic. Like it or not, we need her.” Hard to tell which of us hates the other more. The way she speaks to the Queen borders on treason… But, much as I don’t want to admit it, sometimes her harsh advice is what the Queen needs to hear. And the shattered throne knows she has plenty of reason to be so bitter. I don’t envy her mother’s so-called gift… I’m perfectly content being able to forget shit, thanks.
Pierce: “Others say she’s mean and impatient, but I think it’s more that she’s very focused and driven. She’s the most brilliant mind I know, and an absolute marvel with magic. Watching her weave a spell is like watching a master artist at work; there’s such poetry and grace to her every sigil and incantation. It inspired me to take up art myself, to try to capture even a fraction of that beauty… Erm, anyway, yeah.” I wish she took better care of herself. Some days I have to drag her away from her work so she’ll get some sleep, and I don’t think she’d eat at all if I didn’t bring her food. She obviously resents me for all that, but I think that’s worth making sure she’s alright. It’s… It’s not like she’d ever notice me otherwise.
Siren: “Trust me, you’ve never met a bigger bitch in your life, and that’s coming from a pretty major bitch. Problem is, she has the skills to back it up. No one’s beaten her in training for years; it’s damn hard to fight someone who can’t be tricked the same way twice.” Frankly, what pisses me off most about her is how she treats Pierce. I can’t count how many times I’ve found Pierce moping or even crying because of something she said or did. And yet Pierce continues to wait on her every need, as if the sun shines out of her ass. I don’t understand what you see in her, Pierce, but you deserve so much better…
Pierce, Daughter of Krios
Frieda: “A strong, stalwart warrior, and one of my most dependable captains. She never says much in council meetings, but that’s because she prefers to let her actions speak for her. More of our people should learn from her example.” I know very little about her as a person, other than that she personally designed her tattoos. Should a queen not at least be acquainted with the members of her court? But then, that distance is the only thing keeping them from seeing through my mask, and Pierce is more reverent of me than most. I must stand apart, for the sake of their hope…
Hunter: “She’s a capable fighter, and her precise control over her powers is impressive as well. She’ll be useful against the demigods, when the time finally comes.” She’s got a good amount of muscle for a girl, but she’s still as soft-hearted as the worst of them. So much of her energy is wasted on saccharine drawings. That runt Samantha influenced her way too much; perhaps she’ll toughen up now that distraction is gone.
Maya: “An utter nuisance, constantly distracting me from my work with extravagant cooking experiments and media recommendations. Most nights she even bodily drags me away from my lab! If such ignoramus behavior wasn’t sanctioned by the Queen, I’d stick her hands to her backside for a month.” I don’t understand her at all. My demeanor keeps all others away, and she’s undoubtedly seen the worst of it. Yet she persists; even blunt censure doesn’t dissuade her for long. What does she think she gains in needling me so? Though, my productivity does marginally decrease on the rare day she makes no appearance… Perhaps she’s worth tolerating, if only until I find the source of the correlation.
Siren: “She’s a dense motherfucker, an absolute buzzkill, and a complete fun-hater. She’s also my best friend, no contest. You can’t ask for a steadier ally at your back, or a more attentive ear to listen to your incoherent rambling at three in the morning.” I love this stupid idiot… maybe in more than one way. Don’t think anything will ever come of it, though. She ignores every not-at-all-subtle joke I make to that effect… She’s either too fixated on Maya, or she doesn’t know how to let me down easy. It’s alright, though. As long as we can fight and survive together, that’s enough.
Siren, Daughter of Oceanus
Frieda: “The most colorful personality of my captains, and perhaps our people as a whole. Maya often complains about her ‘immaturity,’ but I think she brings some needed levity to an otherwise grim setting. In situations like ours, morale is just as important as training.” She and Hunter have been together for some time now. Is it any wonder he can’t see me that way, when he already has someone so skilled, and funny, and charming, and radiant, and beautiful… Would I even be worth the notice of a girl like her, if I weren’t her queen?
Hunter: “A gem among gems. I’m proud to call her one of my partners. Get one glimpse of her and you’ll understand why.” Lately she requests more and more of my time, and is irritable when I refuse to be derelict in my duties. I understand I can only expect so much rationality from her, but I have little patience for anything that could risk the Queen’s safety. Combined with some comments she’s made in the past… Has she been having dissident thoughts? Perhaps I need to keep a tighter grip on her.
Maya: “Loud, obnoxious, and entirely too promiscuous. The less said about her, the better.” She’s the poster child for a broader, worrying trend among our forces; the tendency towards hedonism and self-indulgence. I must speak to the Queen once again about the crude things she’s permitted to say in council meetings. Morale be damned, I will not have us making ludicrous mistakes because my simpleton peers were too amused by jokes about genitalia to engage what passes for gray matter in their cavernous skulls.
Pierce: “Is she crass and smart-mouthed? Yes. Is she impulsive and getting herself into trouble? Always. Is she a major pain in my ass? Absolutely. But damn it all if she’s not my best friend anyway. I’ll go to hell and back with her, and I’ll even listen to her ramble about whatever mortal nonsense she’s excited for this week.” She’s one of a kind, and Hunter doesn’t deserve her. I don’t think she realizes that I only pretend to miss her innuendos. I hope she doesn’t, anyway. What would she do if she knew just how attractive I find her? It might ruin our friendship, and our bond is the only thing that keeps me going some days. Better to play the fool and save the pining for Maya, where at least I have nothing to lose.

From my notes for The Tomb of Time, a Percy Jackson crossover AU
I jot down a lot of random things in my planning docs, and I thought my readers might find some of them interesting. I’ll be queuing up a few different posts for these. Be warned that some are much more relevant (and coherent) than others, lol.
Next, me having fun with cryptic nonsense in the style of Stormlight Archive.
Snippets of Doomsaying (From the notebook of Harrowhark Nonagesimus, daughter of Hades)
Received the words “The blood of eons opens the Locked Tomb, and the end swiftly follows.” Obviously prophetic in nature. The words stick in my mind; cannot ignore this. Haven’t the slightest inkling of what it could mean; no myth I know of refers to “the blood of eons,” or “the Locked Tomb.” Need to look elsewhere for answers.
Such a cataclysmic portent should invariably be associated with a Great Prophecy. The Oracle has given none since the Prophecy of Seven two decades ago, but signs were gleaned of that specific prophecy well before its ordaining; it led our forebears to design the plans for the Argo II. Perhaps the same may be true of this prediction.
I must make contact with prophetic spirits, be they old Oracles or common soothsayers, whoever I can find. It will be difficult and taxing; my spirit summoning is not nearly up to Nico’s standard. This may be an opportune time to test a few of those Titanic sigils from my necronomicon. Will record the spirits’ words once I get the circle working.
Update: As it turns out, much of what a millenia-dead Oracle has to say is utter nonsense. Am recording everything in another notebook, will filter out the coherent snippets and collect them here.
“I see the sun bleeding in an ash-choked sky. I see great monoliths shattered, buried in hills of gray. I see a broken girl wandering the ruins, screaming a lament for none to hear.”
“The tyrant becomes his father. Kinship cast aside for ancient grudges, he rings the death knell of all beneath him.”
“The weave narrows, the end inescapable. Merciful Fates, must this be our doom? Can none escape your wills?”
“One has three, the other has two. They wield power not even immortals can fully grasp. They will doom us. They may save us.”
“Blood loosens the seals, shards that must never be. The king’s weapons, wayward and broken. The dead lord’s hubris, slumbering and joyful.”
“Do you hear the heart, hammering beyond the bulwark? It whispers lies in mighty ears, bends forlorn minds. It finds freedom through the twisted door.”
“Condemned innocence, desperate sin. She who seeks to sunder the heavens. I know why you do what you do, and I cannot hate you for it. Your salvation lies on the other side of destruction.”
“The throne of souls falls to the heir’s alliance. A chance to reconcile, to survive the coming fire. Stand united, for the final end comes…”
“I forsake my duty for the good of all. I turn on the one who trusted me. My hands are no longer my own, and with them I lay gods low. Forgive me, my love, as I tarnish your kind soul.”
Addendum: Not enough here to make any conclusions, beyond some disaster being predicted. Some of the phrasing strikes me as odd; could “the dead lord” be interpreted as “lord of the dead?” Must look at revising my translation theorems before my next attempt at this.

Interesting idea! Let’s see here…
Frieda’s is simple and well cared for, with a few basic productivity apps. She’ll claim it’s for management purposes, but what she really loves is photographing plants. 90% of her storage is pictures of flowers.
Hunter barely had his for a day before it was completely FUBAR. The average phone wasn’t made to withstand his massive yaoi hands.
Maya’s is exclusively used for keeping in contact with people. The only customization she did was to make her wallpaper completely blank. She’s never opened the app store.
Pierce primarily uses hers for workout music. It’s a bit scuffed up from being dropped during late runs. Her favorite app is the one that lets you see the names of night sky objects and constellations. She regularly laments the fact that its camera can’t do proper astrophotography.
Siren thinks the brand mascot is adorable. She has so many shitty mobile games downloaded. When she isn’t playing those (and spending way too much on microtransactions) she’s watching YouTube, mainly videos about cute sea creatures. Her one gripe is that they have yet to make a fully waterproof model that she can take swimming.
This was fun! Definitely a new way to think about the blorbos. Would be interested to see what @the-green-divine and @the-sword-lesbian might do for their own blorbos
OC Phone Game
I got tagged by @chronurgy and this is a fun one!! I'm gonna tag everyone reading this because I think everyone should play because I cackled to myself the whole time but specifically I do want to see a few durge phones lmfao so @elinorbard @flamemittens hit me with Ta'av and Elegy and Morgayne
NOW WITH THE ACTUAL LINK TO THE PIC CREW BECAUSE I'M A DUMBASS LMFAO
Kass' phone. Pretty in pink! But, hang on, why does it look like she's in the nautiloid pod? Does she not have any reception to call for help?
Rhyme! Why is her screen cracked and why is the background shattering like ice? Don't worry about it :)
And then there's Carmela, ever the sensible paladin. Clear phone cover to protect, a good religious hymn playing, wired headphones which are better for the environment and makes sure she doesn't interrupt anyone else. Practically perfect in every way
