community fridge at sanford, nyc
Posted by @girlwithadoge on tiktok, I was able to come across the knowledge that there was a new community fridge in Flushing, located 136-23 Sanford Avenue Flushing NY 11355. This community fridge is decorated with many flowers and Doraemon and as @girlwithadoge says “take what you need, and give what you can.”
I especially loved when she stated that the community fridge is a reminder that there is still love even when you are overwhelmed in hate.
So if you are ever in need of food or plan to donate some food, there is a community fridge located at Sanford, Flushing.
The link to @girlwithadoge ‘s video on the community fridge: https://www.tiktok.com/@girlwithadoge/video/6962703012020194565?lang=en&is_copy_url=1&is_from_webapp=v1
I hope that everyone is well on this day and to remember that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel, no matter how dark or long this tunnel may seem! ( ^∀^)

recent hate crime attack in chinatown
The photo above shows Alexander Wright, who as of June 1st has been arrested for randomly attacking a 55 year old Asian elderly in Chinatown, NYC.
In the video linked Alexander Wright can be seen swinging at the unnamed Asian elderly lady who was just walking down Bayard Street: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/asian-woman-55-knocked-out-unprovoked-attack-nyc-s-chinatown-n1269192.
Right after he swung at the lady, the lady faints right away falling onto the ground, many people automatically go up to the lady to see if she is ok. Wright escaped to another block before he was apprehended by police. While police have stated that they will not disclose the victims name, it has been stated that she was taken to the New York-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital.
The gradual increase in anti-Asian hate crimes is very concerning and we hope that with the bill now signed, the amount of hate crimes will decrease.
While there is no specific GoFundMe for this victim, you can always donate to Support the AAPI’s GoFundMe linked here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-aapi-community-fund.
This GoFundMe is directed towards helping the AAPI community and their mission statement is “We must amplify AAPI voices and find ways to uplift, empower, and protect the AAPI community.”

in support of xiao zhen xie
On March 17th, 76 year old Xiao Zhen Xie was randomly attacked by Steven Jenkins on Market Street, San Francisco. Jenkins is also suspected of assaulting another elderly Asian earlier that day.
Zhen Xie can be seen on video here after the attack stating that Jenkins had bullied her: https://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2021/03/17/elderly-asian-woman-beats-up-man-attacking-her-in-san-francisco/
Zhen Xie suffered numerous injuries which can be seen as she holds a ice pack to her bleeding face after the EMT’s arrival. In recovery, Zhen Xie states that she’s “very traumatized, very scared, and this eye is still bleeding. The right eye still cannot see anything and still bleeding and we have something to absorb the bleeding.”
There has been a 150% increase in anti-Asian hate crimes since March of last year year, statistics from forum Stop AAPI Hate shows that there have been over 3800 cases of anti-Asian hate crimes reported, meaning there could’ve been many more cases which were simply not reported.
Zhen Xie’s grandson John Chen has created a GoFundMe in order to help pay for hospital bills required.
The GoFundMe is linked here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/2b8zh292uo
John Chen gives us a bit more insight on Zhen Xie’s situation shedding light on the fact that she is a cancer survivor and has had diabetes for over 10 years. An update on the GoFundMe on April 16th has showed that Zhen Xie has almost completely recovered and is extremely grateful for the donations which has surpassed $1 million. Zhen Xie and her family have stated that all donations besides the amount used to help with her hospital bills will be donated back towards the Asian community in order to combat the racism they face. To Zhen Xie we want to say thank you for being so strong and thank you for the donations! We hope you are now fully recovered!

in support of vilma kari
On March 28th, 65 year old Vilma Kari was brutally attacked while walking to church at Midtown Manhattan by Brandon Elliot who was on parole for murdering his mother in 2002. The random attack happened outside of a luxury apartment building where two doormen watched as Elliot repeatedly kicked Kari’s head and stomach. While the doormen remained unmoving, a good samaritan across the street screamed at Elliot until he walked away. However, after Elliot walked away the doormen did not react to help Kari and instead closed the apartment doors on Kari.
Kari was hospitalized with many severe injuries, including a fractured pelvis. She is now recovering and states “I feel I just have to accept and be open...even though that fear is in my heart. But if we let fear overcome all these things, then nothing will happen. We have to rise above fear and be stronger than that--be stronger than fear.”
Kari’s wise words have brought a sense of unity to the Asian community and we hope that her recovery is going well!
Kari’s daughter Liz has created a GoFundMe linked here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-and-support-we-are-with-you-vilma-kari
The GoFundMe will not only help to pay for Kari’s hospital bills, but it will also go towards other victims and organizations to help further raise awareness to the AAPI community.

covid-19 hate crime bill passed
In an attempt to lower Asian hate crimes the House of Representatives passed the bill “Covid-19 Hate Crimes Act”, with 364 votes for the bill and 62 against(all 62 were Republicans.) Biden shows his stance on the rise of Asian hate crimes with this tweet
“Hate has no place in America--and I look forward to making that clear this afternoon by signing the Covid-19 Hate Crimes Act into law.”
The bill passed is aimed to help “and expedite review of potential COVID-19 related hate crimes and incidents reported at the federal, state or local level. It was also direct the Justice Department and Health and Human Services to work with community-based organizations to issue guidance raising awareness of hate crimes during the pandemic, and would require the attorney general to issue guidance to work with the state and local law enforcement agencies to establish online reporting of them”(https://abc7.com/covid-19-hate-crimes-act-summary-covid-crime-bill-asian-american-aapi-attacks/10667521/).
In summary the passing of this bill is aimed to help combat against rise in Asian hates by holding individuals accountable against crimes motivated by racial reasons.
Hopefully with the passing of this bill the rise in Asian hate crimes will slowly plateau and decrease.
-Have a wonderful day ( ^∀^)
