Lookee what I found!
So Deja View, the blog run by Disney animator Andrea Deja (who is awesome and a font of knowledge on everything Disney) unearthed a bunch of concept art from “The Black Cauldron” a while back, and I’m just now discovering them.  Now, I’m far from a fan of the movie, being a “Prydain Chronicles” purist who grew up with the books and hated to see them hamstrung so badly by Disney.  However, the animation nut in me does think these drawings are pretty interesting in and of themselves, even if they don’t scream the characters.

The High King by Lloyd Alexander
1969 Newbery Medal Winner
Adapted by ArtsROC Academy (2015)
From Rochester, NY
Judges’ Remarks: Such an elaborate, high-production value Lego stop motion! And not just a technical achievement with the stop-motion Legos and the lip-synching: those are some hilarious voice performances too, totally capturing the spirit of the books, with the give-and-take between Taran and Eilonwy in full force (“who knew a sword would reign supreme?” “i did, that’s why i got it!” “I was a lousy pig-keeper!” “assistant!”) and all the other characters too, like your surfer-dude Fflewdur Fflam (“especially with his "we should just make a band!” exclamation and all the other characters’ fun comments). That was ambitious and awesome how the movie summed up not just THE HIGH KING, but the entire Chronicles of Prydain in one movie! I liked how the movie changed the style for the moment where he finds the magical sword, and the chase scenes and battle scenes and the initial mustering scene – all of it was packed with detail. The “Day the Music Died” song was aptly chosen and expertly rewritten for the occasion! Wonderful job.

With the recent announcement that Disney is working on a series of Prydain feature films, I thought it would be a good time to share this poster concept for a personal project I’ve been working on a little at a time over the years. Disney hasn’t invited me to work on the films yet, so please share this post if you believe they should: http://jkunzart.com/2016/03/22/an-open-letter-to-sam-dickerman/

@starlinginthesky made me realize that I hadn’t posted pictures of all of my Chronicles of Prydain Bracelets. There are ones for Taran of Caer Dalben, Eilonwy of the Redgold Hair and the Sea People of Llyr, my personal favorite character and bard, Fflewddur Fflam, and a matched pair for Gurgi with his favorite saying, since I haven’t quite gotten around to making a specific one for him yet (I just got the proper beads for that!)
Most people recognize the names as characters from Disney’s “The Black Cauldron” but I will put in my two cents worth here and say the books are 10,000% better. I like the movie, but I like it as another universe. XD
(Go read the books, you won’t regret it!)

yet long afterward, when all had passed away into distant memory, there were many who wondered whether King Taran, Queen Eilonwy, and their companions had indeed walked the earth, or whether they had been no more than dreams in a tale set down to beguile children. and, in time, only the bards knew the truth of it.

I L-O-V-E this!
Princesses being unimpressed with Assistant Pig Keepers, the series.
In the Book of Three, Taran tries to convince Eilonwy to give him the big, mysterious sword they found whilst escaping Achren’s dungeons. Unsuccessfully.
