Sugisaki Hana Translations
100 posts
***DISCLAIMER*** I’m still studying Japanese so if there’s a mistake in my translation, please correct me! Also, there are times when it's difficult to find an English equivalent to a Japanese phrase (or it’ll have multiple interpretations) so I may translate it in a way that would just cover the gist of it. Finally, some reconstructing of the original sentence structures (as in it’s original place in the paragraph) is necessary and will be done in order to make it more understandable in English.

VOGUE Girl of the Month: Sugisaki Hana (2021.06.30)
Tumblr media
On her ideal type of man:
"I am attracted to people who like to talk. So it'd be better if we had similar sensibilities or common interests. I'm usually an indoor person, watching movies and cooking at home, so I'd be happy with someone who doesn't mind spending time at home."
On romance:
"If I really like that person, I would tell him. I'd feel embarrassed, but I won't hesitate. I'm the type of person who wants to honestly express my feelings with my own mouth.
It's not that I want to be in love all the time, but when I fall in love, the usual scenery looks different and my everyday life feels richer just by thinking about my partner while shopping, so I want to cherish the time I spend in that state.
My ideal relationship is a calm one where both parties respect each other. However, the love stories that I remember are often intense and disturbing. Experiences that makes me very sad, hurt, or angry inevitably remain vivid in my mind."
On acting:
"I try to avoid intense emotions in my daily life as much as possible. But with my current job, there were times when I needed to dig it up myself. When I encounter such feelings, I usually tell myself 'I won't forget this feeling,' and write it in my diary. There were some emotions that I didn't understand while I was playing the role, but now I can only after experiencing them for myself. I think the acting profession, where all your experiences are put to good use, is both really mysterious and interesting."
Tumblr media
On fashion:
"I still wear a lot of Comme des Garçons, and more of Maison Margiela recently. I tend to choose black clothes because I felt like bright colors didn't suit me, but I was recently reminded of the appeal of black which can look completely different depending on the material and the way the light hits it. I've been wearing more clothes of various colors compared to before too."
On music:
"I generally like J-rock, and often listen to Andymori and Kaneko Ayano whose lyrics I find appealing. I've also been recently listening to music that I knew existed but had never listened to before, such as Fishmans and Yura Yura Teikoku."
On her day-off:
"Basically, I'm lazy but like to eat, so I cook a lot. I have a personal rule which is to not care about how much time I spend doing what I like. I feel that cooking satisfies my 'creative urge,' so I think the time I spend cooking is also a way to relax."
On books:
"I read magazines and cookbooks, but my latest recommendation is a book by Kudo Rain called, 'Watashi wo koufuku ni shinai hou ga ii' (You better not make me hungry). It's a collection of essay that describes daily events and feelings through food. I think her writing is honest, lovely, and wonderful. Her essay collection, 'Singing Ghost' is also very good. She's my favorite author."
On acting challenges:
"I'm not skillful at all. Even now, there are certain things I'm not good at expressing, but after doing 'Ochoyan,' I've been able to calmly explore the reasons why I can't do them. I used to get depressed and feel regret then would try do my best again after awhile, but I'm trying to stop being depressed in the first place. Focusing instead on how I can solve it, I gradually feel like I'm getting better at overcoming them."
On seizing opportunities:
"Even if you're unsure whether it's doable or not, you have to be confident in yourself and say 'I can do it.' For me, negative feelings rarely produce positive outcomes. That's why I think it's important to believe in one's self. Although it's difficult to balance both, it's also not good to be overly-confident and stop listening to the voices around you. I think it's just as important to doubt and ask yourself, 'Is this really alright?'"
As an actress 10 years from now:
"To be honest, aside from me looking forward to the people and different kinds of works I will encounter from here on, I don't really have much of a vision for the future. I hope I can continue to take on challenges while having fun."

Hiiii how are you? Thank you so much for your hard work! I really appreciate it! Anywho, I was just wondering... Are you going to continue translating Hana and Oryo's Flower Tokyo radio show? (Especially for Hana's 10 Q&A and the their conversations after that) I'm not trying to pressure you or anything, I'm simply just wondering because I'm so looking forward to it 😂 hehe
Hey there! Sorry for the late response, I've been busy with real life stuff. It's gonna take awhile, but I am planning on finishing the radio show translation for sure. I'll try to release the next part by next week! Please look forward to it~ Thank you for your patience!

MORE September 2020 issue: Yoshizawa Ryo x Sugisaki Hana
“Aokute, Itakute, Moroi” is the live-action adaptation of Sumino Yoru’s best-selling novel, a suspense story about a college student taking revenge while brandishing justice after being robbed of his companion and place. Yoshizawa Ryo and Sugisaki Hana will be co-starring since “BLEACH,” as double leads.
Yoshizawa: I played Kaede who is miserable, creepy, and while he doesn’t look bad from the outside, he is a boy with a narrow vision who thinks he is doing the right thing. I’ve had a lot of quirky roles before, but I’ve never challenged a role that people might hate until now, so I was looking forward to it (laughs).
Sugisaki: I’ve also had many opportunities to perform roles with a heavy burden up until now, and there were times when I’d wonder if those roles influenced my own personality to become dark. When I was in highschool, I was always acting alone, sullen and afraid to get involved with people. But as I get older, the roles I’m encountering are getting brighter little by little. I have a feeling that I’m also gradually changing. Because of my current self, I thought I wanted to play the role of Akiyoshi, who is bright enough to be dazzling.
Akiyoshi who can actively communicate with people, and Kaede who keeps his distance. Which type are you two now?
Yoshizawa: I’m completely Kaede.
Sugisaki: (laughs) I kinda understand. As for me, I keep some distance with strangers, but I also really want to talk with people who like to talk. Shooting this film with Yoshizawa-san, just like Akiyoshi and Kaede in the story, it felt like our distance had gradually decreased.
Yoshizawa: Well, that’s thanks to Hana-chan’s personality. You exude the aura of a really nice person so there was a sense of security. I’m shy, but I’m also the type to want to get along with other people, so I wanted to become like Hana-chan.
Hana: I’m happy (blush).
You acted out a college student’s springtime of youth, but what kind of youth did you two want to experience?
Yoshizawa: I wanted to form a loose band. Practice adequately then show off in front of all the students only during the school festival, something like that (laughs).
Sugisaki: Someone who excites the crowd!
Yoshizawa: I’ll be in charge of vocals. I want to stand out the most after all.
Sugisaki: If we team up together, I’m in charge of percussion ok.
Yoshizawa: No, you have to sing there! Let’s go with double vocals!
Sugisaki: No no, it’s better if I’m in the back~ (laughs).
Yoshizawa: What should the band name be?
Sugisaki: Then...... “Oryo and Ohana”?
Yoshizawa: That’s good (laughs). Let’s do it!
