Sometimes you just need to let them hate themselves, and wallow in their own self-pity. It’s better if they don’t bring you down too.

Heavenly Tides | Leylines and Cows
Karel lets go of a deep sigh when the sound of a cowbell rings throughout the field. He looks up to see Pip approach, leading a cow with a makeshift bridle.
“Please tell me you didn’t just steal a cow.”
“I’ve found it in a field,” Pip says, grinning. The cow offers only a meek cry in denial.
Karel shakes his head before turning to Seo, who stands in the centre of the field. The green is flat and stretches out into the distance. Only the worn-down fences struggling to stay afloat amidst the tall grasses suggest that the field has ever been used for human activity.
“Do we really need a stolen cow to find the leylines?” says Karel. “I thought nimfs would be able to just… magic their way towards them.”
Seo makes a sharp turn towards him. Her eyes burn and her usually gentle smile is all but gone.
“You know very well why I can’t right now,” she says. After staring at Karel for just long enough that he turns away by himself she beckons to Pip to bring the cow over to her.
“Besides,” she continues, “how do you think your ancestors decided where to build their church?”
Karel’s now tired eyes turn from the cow—who managed to bend down far enough to reach the grass and was chewing contently—back to Seo.
With a quick tug Seo takes off the bridle and stands back, tucking the rope underneath her belt.
“All right, off you go.”
Seo slowly paces backwards until she is standing next to Karel, beckoning Pip to join them. The three of them cast their eyes to the cow, who seems unfazed by the sudden spotlight cast upon her. She slowly makes her way down the stands of grass, and whenever she needs to exert any effort to reach for lower grasses she simply turns to another brush.
Pip opens his mouth to speak but Seo jerks up her hand to silence him.
“We just have to wait for the leylines to vibrate,” she whispers. Karel and Pip share a confused glance but then something, somewhere in the distance, something so frail that none of the troupe could feel it, calls out. And like clockwork the cow decides she isn’t interested in this specific patch of grass anymore and slowly makes her way towards the western side of the field.
