there's a lot of things i love about gentlebeard. but i think what i love the most is how they're completely and unapologetically themselves, right from the get go. one of the first things stede does, after knowing ed all of five minutes, is invite him into a space that he's very proud of and excited about. and what does ed do? he immediately takes interest in it, validating the joy stede was feeling. similarly, ed never has to put up any walls when he's around stede. he's vulnerable with him; he tells him about his father, which i doubt he's told many people, he opens up about trauma and he cries. he's not worried about his reputation as 'blackbeard' around stede, because he knows he doesn't have to be. and this, THIS is what makes them so special in my eyes. they fell in love with each other, flaws, odd habits and all. they fell in love with the true versions of the other. ed fell in love with ALL of stede and stede fell in love with ALL of ed. it's a whole, beautiful, captivating kind of love, which is why it hurt ed all the more when he was abandoned.

i genuinely can't wait to see the way they handle the blackbonnet reunion in season 2. there's so many ways they could take it. i like to imagine a moment of utter stillness and shock when they finally find each other.. but then again imagine a rage filled sword fight, or a screaming fight, or a complete disregard – a silent moment between the two before ed turns away without a word..
there are just so many POSSIBILITIES OH GODDD I CAN'T WAIT

So people have already talked about how Stede’s “what does it feel like to be in love” montage doesn’t include one of the most explicitly romantic moments of the series, the moonlight scene. But you know what else is not in there? Anything from episode 9. Not just, y’know, their actual kiss, but all those moments that to us read as grand romantic gestures. Ed signing the Act of Grace. Ed confessing to the murder of some dude he’s never heard of in the hope of sparing Stede. The wedding veil blindfold moment. Ed stepping in front of a literal firing squad to protect Stede.
I do not think that Stede has parsed at all that Ed did all those things out of love. To us the answer to his question on the beach–“How are you taking this so well?”–is obvious: because Ed has been wanting to drop the Blackbeard persona for years, yes, but also because I’m with you. But I think the whole thing is so tangled up with guilt for Stede that he can’t even begin to think of it that way, even by the end of episode 10. It’s still something he did to Ed, dragging him into Stede’s own mess with the Badmintons, costing Ed his freedom, his reputation, even his beard! He agrees with Chauncey that he’s brought history’s greatest pirate to ruin. That’s why he leaves! And even after he’s figured out, oh, I’m in love with Ed, I still don’t think it’s hit him that Ed did all those things because Ed is in love with him.
