Good You Can Do (AUS version)
It’s important at times like this that we don’t let our most vulnerable slip through the cracks - whether it be of the virus, or of the consequences (income and job losses, etc.). So I am compiling a list of charities that will be helping people who are vulnerable to COVID-19 and its impacts. I encourage people to add! (*note: this list is Australia focused, but I don’t mind if you add others - please be clear about where your charity operates if specific)
I know not everyone is in a position to give right now, but those of us that are will be critical to empowering some of these charities (and the people they help) to deal with this crisis. Please give if you can spare, and/or share.
-
GENERAL / MISC
Ozharvest - Australia’s leading food rescue organisation, they frequently work with supermarkets etc. to ensure edible food gets to people who need to eat. They have many branches throughout the country. You can donate money or food, or organise food drives here.
Foodbank Australia - Another food rescue organisation specialising (but not exclusively for) disaster relief eg. the recent bushfires. They have many branches throughout the country. You can volunteer, or donate money or food or services here.
Youth Off the Streets - is a non-denominational charity (Christian origin) that helps homeless youth and youth at risk in NSW with branches also in Brisbane and Melbourne. They offer accommodation and educational assistance as well as running Food Van, distributing hot meals to homeless people in need. You can purchase items from their shop, volunteer, or donate here.
The Kindness Factory - This organisation focuses on sharing and encouraging small acts of kindness and faith in humanity. They have launched a “Cart Buddies” program to help people who are self-isolating or otherwise at risk from COVID-19 be paired up with healthy people who are able and willing to shop for them. To sign up as a helper OR a helpee (they are looking for both!) email [email protected] with your name, post code and suburb.
-

when i watch old movies i’m constantly surprised by how much acting has improved. not that the acting in the classics is bad, it’s just often kind of artificial? it’s acting-y. it’s like stage acting.
it took some decades for the arts of acting and filmmaking to catch up to the potential that was in movies all along; stuff like microexpressions and silences and eyes, oh man people are SO much better at acting with their eyes than they were in the 40′s, or even the 70′s.
the performances we take for granted in adventure movies and comedies now would’ve blown the critics’ socks off in the days of ‘casablanca’.

You know it’d be really great, speaking as an event photographer, if there wasn’t a global pandemic causing events and conferences to be cancelled…

I feel like that’s exactly why they’re there - to bully kids; to ensure that they are in a position of power and authority over a group of vulnerable people. So, they can get away with psychologically abusing them.
whats the deal with people with low-empathy levels going into high-empathy career paths? like being an elementary education major is not easy…. i cant imagine how some people choose to go through all these classes, all the reading, exams, student teaching… just so they can be mean to kids. like why are you here???????????

I didn’t know that the word was a slur until I saw this post. Now I do, so I won’t use it anymore.  It’s not hard to do.
Wondering how the word gypsy is a racial slur? Why are you referring to it as the G word when it literally means a free spirited traveller. What is so offensive about that?
Tumblr media
Let me tell you a story, ignorant one.
Once upon a time, there were a group of people migrating from northern India and Pakistan after the invasion “of the Persian Muslims who have since settled in Trukey, all of Europe, and the Americas These people are called the Rromani.” (x)
Once the pale bird feces people of Europe came into contact with the Rromani, they believed them to hail from Egypt, thus calling them Gypsies.
Now about what disgusting white people like you have been trying to turn this racial slur into. There is nothing about being a free spirited traveller if you’re called such a word. What is up with white people romanticizing everything to make it seem all nice and rainbows for them?
“They were not nomadic by choice. They moved around because they had to… they were persecuted everywhere they went, and still are, to this day. They were persecuted alongside the Jews in the Holocaust – the Roma & Sinti”. They were forced to have this sort of nomadic lifestyle because “no country wanted them there”. (x)
Let’s not forget these lovely things Rromani people did and still go through because of who they are:
“Forced sterilization (yes, it is still happening)
Eviction
Harassment (by law enforcement as well as civilians)
Fingerprinting (this is happening in Italy right now – all Romani people are being fingerprinted, simply because our race is considered ‘criminal’)
Concentration camps
Starvation
Exclusion from public schools and welfare programs
Bombings (it is not uncommon in places like the Czech Republic for people to throw molotov cocktails into the windows of Romani homes)” (x)
“First and foremost: THE WORD “GYPSY” IS AN ETHNIC SLUR. It is a pejorative. It is an exonym that is hurtful and offensive. You need to accept this, period.
We are NOT your halloween costume. We are NOT your flowy skirt. We are NOT your fashion sense. We are NOT your wanderlust. We are NOT ‘boho.’
Gypsy is not fashion. Gypsy is not traveling. Gypsy is not a headband or a costume, or boho, or a long skirt.
Gypsy is a hurtful ethnic slur used to refer to the Romani people.
We cannot seem to emphasize this enough to people. This word is a slur. It was created to be a slur. Its meaning does not change. It will always be a slur. It will always be offensive.
‘The word is not yours. It’s ours. We can use it as we see fit. You cannot.’ - biggadjeworld
We are a real people, with traditions, culture, and colorful heritage that spans centuries.” (x)
The “x”s in the post refer to sources you can click on and educate yourself with. On those pages, there are more links to become familiar to this slur and the Rromani people.
Also, don’t forget to stop by thisisnotromani!

Oh boy if you’re mad about the US separating children from their parents, putting people in camps, and having a zero tolerance policy towards asylum seekers that has led to deliberate extensive cruelty as a futile deterrent wait until you hear about Australia.

Hey everyone, so I guess Drump is coming to Minnesota for the first time since the election and is having a rally in Duluth.
Now, I’m not sure if you’ve seen the post, but there was a Norwegian movement where, when a hate speaker was coming to town, they reserved EVERY ticket and didn’t show up–so I thought, why not do the same?
You can only reserve 2 tickets and you need a phone # you can get texts from because you have to confirm by clicking a link, BUT it’s free and if you have a few minutes and you want to fuck with our so-called “President”, please join me in “attending” what is sure to be an….interestingly-attended rally.

Caught a glimpse of ‘Back Together’ or some shit on Channel 7 with a girl asking why her ex-BF gave her $10 000 for a boob job as an unsolicited ‘gift’. As if you didn’t take the money and then dump his ass while telling him it’s because he needs a penis enlargement
