generally you shouldn't write run-on sentences because they get confusing and it doesn't give the reader a break. that doesn't apply to me though my run-on sentences are fun and understandable and they have a rhythm to it that makes you want to keep reading

one of the best and also worst things about working a physical labor focused job is that my head is pretty much completely free and empty to think about other things. those things are usually a. my blorbo b. blorbo torture. thats where the worst part of it all comes in: i build up like whole paragraphs of text in my head but there's never any time to sit down and write it all out. and by the time i come home 12 hours later its like. the idea is still there but that perfect sentence that sounded so good? nah yeah that thing is Gone dude. so i just kinda. keep thinking the same thought just to try and remember what was it that i wanted to write.

Was thinking about how Mouthwashing deliberately uses its retro-futurism aesthetic to highlight the nihilism inherent to its setting. I love reto-futurism, I love seeing flying cars that still play cassette tapes, but usually that is couched in amused hindsight. Look how they thought the future would look, isn't that charming?

In Mouthwashing, we see a flavor of retro-futurism that is explicitly hostile. Ship navigational screens that are monochrome. Passwords for essential functions hidden behind UV scanners. Food dispensers require flipping through a recipe book to use. When you have to cut back some of the fire foam, you don't get some high tech laser or saw, you get a classic fireman's axe. The message that the crew is being laid off is delivered by fax machine. There's not even any tech that allows you to communicate with someone on the other side of the ship, all the conversations have to happen person to person. There is next to no technology that eases the burden of the crew. It is a future where innovation is nakedly obsessed with serving corporate interests at the expense of all others.

This becomes increasingly apparent when you think about the eponymous cargo of the Tulpar. Yes, the game is quick to point out the absurdity of a spaceship loaded with nothing but mouthwash. But that acknowledgement actually buries the greater absurdity: that this is a universe where interplanetary travel is possible, and we are still bottling mouthwash with single-use plastics.

Holy shit your fic (No alarms and no surprises) is scary good and I’m screaming over it, I can’t sit still I keep thinking and thinking about it. It’s consuming me (it’s also keeping my fixation on mouthwashing alive, mostly it’s really doing a lot to keep my mind on mouthwashing) Like how are you so good at writing I swear it’s way too good. My gut genuinely twists and clenches while reading certain parts, and the whirl wind of emotions I go through reading it is agghhhhhhh hopeful, anger, sadness fear disgust so many emotions running through my body at once I simply cant keep still.The visuals are gorgeous and they way you write the characters feels so real like real people but the characters themselves at the same time. It’s all so genuine and human it amazes- baffles- me. All in all you write so eloquently.

also id like to say I have 600 visits on your fic (im going insane- probably , most likely, or I already am) I could’ve commented this on Ao3 tbh but does it matter really? Idk- also sorry if this is poorly written 😅

especially happy to hear that the characters are still themselves bc it is kind of an out there scenario so i was uhhh actually really worried about that. but so far the feedback was really positive!

although the fact that the writing comes off as vivid also makes me very happy. no alarms is currently the largest fic ive ever written and also probably the only work of this size that i managed to update consistently. here's hoping it will continue this way! probably will, i still have more ideas for it. i really like the way my writing style is shaping up so im really really grateful to all the people that have left comments saying how much they like it as well! ahhh sweet sweet validation
