So……lets begin

You hold your ukulele (from now on I’ll shorten it to uke :) ) with you left hand, with your thumb on the round back of the neck (the bit that sticks out). On the body where the uke curls in then out again (makes an s shape looking at it when the neck it pointing towards the celing) is placed just about where your right nipple is. Just whatever feels comfortable. On a guitar it would look silly holding the guitar this high but on a uke it’s fine :)

So….strings and frets….

The uke (as you can see) has four strings. These are called g,C,E,A with the strings going down towards the floor in that order. The strings are often just called the first,second, third and fourth, with the first being closest to the floor and the fourth closest to your chin. I’m sorry if this bit’s a bit bland but it’s needed, it’ll soon be the fun stuff don’t worry :)

Now; look at your uke. See those metal lines running across the neck? With the dots? They’re called “frets”. They go in numerical order from one through twelve and twelve is closest to the hole in your uke :) you put your fingers between the lines depending on what note you want to play. Simple!!

So…tuning…..

A properly tuned uke can make your music sound SSSSOOO much better it’s unreal.

Start with tuning the third string to a c if you have a piano or just any not that sounds good and the strings not too tight or loose. You can change the pitch of the string by (gently!!!) twisting the pegs at the top.

Once you’ve got a comfortable pitch then play the fourth fret of the thrid string. Not too hard though as you’ll play the wrong note. The pitch of that note is what you want your second to be :)

The fifth fret second is the pitch you want for the first string

The second fret of the fourth string should have the same pitch as the first string

Right…..tuning done…….now into the PROPER FUN STUFF!!
