None Of The Crows Will Die

I know many of us are afraid that when we get SoC 3, a Crow has to die. And many people think it's Kaz but just like a post @quillsthrills made, Killing Kaz is Killing Hope. (Sorry for the tag but you made a valuable point!!)

And I've also seen another or multiple posts about how Leigh can't kill off any of the Crows because how is she going to defend killing off a disabled boy with severe PTSD, a girl who also has severe PTSD and survived sex trafficking, a boy who has ADHD and is recovering from a gambling addiction, a boy who has dyslexia and had an abusive father, and a plus sized girl recovering from a drug addiction. (I don't know who posted this but please take the credit, I just typed this from my memory and understanding.)

And the reason Matthias died was because Leigh planned it from the start. She knew he was going to die, and his death was relevant to his character arc.

And I don't know if Leigh secretly plans to kill another one of the Crows but she can't justify killing any of the remaining 5 crows. And their deaths contribute nothing to their character development.

I also stumbled into this quote that I highlighted from my copy of Six of Crows.

The first day trekking was like a cleansing—little talk, the white hush of the north welcoming Matthias back without judgement. He'd expected more complaints, but even Wylan had simply put his head down and walked. They're all survivors, Matthias understood. They adapt.

This was during their trek through Fjerda, going to the Ice Court.

And maybe I'm not contributing any new points but I would just like to point out that the Crows are survivors, even Matthias said so. He wasn't including himself and I don't know if that's because he still didn't like associating himself with the rest of the Crows or if this was possible foreshadowing, which will be a stretch, but Kaz, Inej, Jesper, Wylan, and Nina are all survivors.

They represent and stand for all the people who've gone through the experiences they've had, which although are extreme to the average person, we still resonate with. And killing any of them wouldn't send a good message.

Leigh can't kill Kaz because he stands for the people who are surviving and living in spite of whatever challenges they face.

Leigh can't kill Inej because she stands for the people who are healing and have found purpose in the lives they live.

Leigh can't kill Jesper because he stands for the people who are learning from their mistakes and trying to do better.

Leigh can't kill Wylan because he stands for the people who have found peace and prosperity despite their upbringing and let go of the ones who hurt them.

Leigh can't kill Nina because she stands for the people who have faced an incredible loss and doing their best to move on and live life to the fullest.

These aren't the only reasons and just reflect my interpretation of the characters but I really believe Leigh can't give these characters tragic endings because they all deserve happy, hopeful ones.

To lovely humans who were excluded from invitations, left behind when they tied their shoes, forced to walk in the grass when the sidewalk was full, spoken over when you tried to contribute, whispered about or laughed at, given side-eye when you tried to fit in…. you are so worthy of love.

god, but I love tumblr. I have whole days where I have to be a Responsible Grown Up With a Job ™ and then I come on here and I’m all THERE ARE MY PEOPLE as we froth and chortle gleefully over our Blorbos and communicate in phrases that are impenetrable to outsiders and examine tiny (1m 31s) snippets of actors we adore with the kind of attention to detail that forensic examiners WISH they could sustain. Keep it up, my lovely friends. I salute you.

The crows' personalities as explained by birth order/family composition:

Nina and Inej (only child, grew up with lots of other kids): generally easygoing, often in possession of the braincell, good with adults, strong sense of right and wrong that primarily governs what they do but they will apply it to other people's actions too.

Jesper and Wylan (only child, grew up alone with complicated parental relationships): chill but in an anxious way, people pleaser trying not to be one, no set moral code beyond a vague sense of what's not okay to do.

Matthias (oldest sibling, dead family): feels personally responsible for every single thing that happens in his vicinity ever, extremely highstrung, has no chill (stressed), clear moral code based on an external value system.

Kaz (youngest sibling, dead family): feels zero responsibility for other people's actions, choses extreme measures the second something goes wrong, has no chill (high-energy), clear moral code that's solely based on internal judgement.

If there is a Six Of Crows 3. I want Kanej to just hang out.

I want to see Kanej laugh together, to see Kaz light up for once because for Saint’s sake his wraith has returned.

Kaz brushing her shoulder with his to make sure she’s real, to feel the water rising but knowing she won’t drown.

To maybe have a Rewrite The Stars style scene where they are dancing together, but not touching.

A Suli dance maybe, with Inej teaching Kaz the steps, arms out, watching each other as they twist and turn.

Maybe as the big ‘touch scene’ as we’ve had in each of the books so far (cheek touch, the hand holding, the bandage scene), maybe there is a hug. A hug where Kaz tucks his face into her shoulder and she puts one arm around his back. So small to others but so huge for them.

To see that they could be more than Dirtyhands and The Wraith. The King Of The Barrel and The Scourge Of The Sea.

To just be them. And for that to be enough.
