She rose to become an internationally beloved singer, dancer, actor, and comedienne. She was an anti-war activist and member of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, who gained the wrath of President Johnson and was harassed for years by the FBI. A vocal advocate of LGBT rights. Asked about her following from and affinity for the gay community, she said, "We're all rejected people, we know what it is to be refused, we know what it is to be oppressed, depressed, and then, accused, and I am very much cognizant of that feeling. A very #HappyBirthday to one of my biggest early influences and an icon of #OperaHistory and #BlackHistory. 92 years old and still a diva to the core, Leontyne Price is and will always be an absolute legend. Known as the first #AfricanAmerican #primadonna of the @metopera, her debut at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York in January, 1961, was as Leonora in Il Trovatore. The standing ovation lasted 42 minutes!!!!Quickly becoming a leading soprano there, Leontyne Price made the Met her primary base until her retirement in 1985. She was the fifth black singer in the Met’s opera company, and the first to really achieve stardom there.
