my favorite genre of fictional character is like "i am terrifying to almost everyone, i'm very good at killing, i can endure anything, i've become exceptionally good at playing into my reputation, and if you try to give me positive social interaction i will react with confusion and cower in a corner like an abused animal. and i may try to shoot you. but there is also a chance i may imprint on you like a feral dog receiving its first loving touch! good luck."

I'm only a few episodes into enterprise and so far my biggest problem is the show seems to want to present archer as this cool and charming guy that's showing the stuck up t'pol how to have fun and experience things the human way, but they're not doing a good job of actually making him likeable. Archer, and by extension most of the crew, seem like these annoying jag offs that are being way too cavalier about their missions. I agree with t'pol, maybe you shouldn't rush into a situation where you don't have all the facts. Maybe you shouldn't assume every alien uses human custom and traditions. Maybe you shouldn't disregard safety procedures that are in place for a reason
#star trek enterprise let's gooooo#everyone of these characters is flawed and it's on purpose#only my queen t'pol is right (always)#joking she does have her issues too#i love these toddlers in space#star trek enterprise

The funniest bit about Spock running off to join Starfleet as a "fuck you dad" moment is that there's no way Starfleet was happy about it either. Spock's family is extremely important, T'Pau wields massive influence, Sarek is the Ambassador, ect.
So Starfleet is in this horrible position where they can't say no to this extremely competent and well-connected Vulcan joining up, but it also causes a massive diplomatic headache because his whole family resents it. And then if anything were to happen to him? Major diplomatic incident.
Good thing he's level headed and never throws himself headlong into needless danger---what's that? He's completely unhinged? Oh, well, nevertheless

I know the moral and ethical dilemma in ENT S3 E10 Similitude is "wouldn't it be fucked up to make a clone of someone that only lives for 15 days so you can harvest their tissue" but what is ACTUALLY upsetting to me is imagining your entire workplace witnessing you as a child and teenager without you knowing. Imagine you're Trip and you wake up after being in a coma and everyone knows your childhood quirks and teenage bad behavior. Your boss has seen you as a baby. Your younger self professed to having feelings for your work crush before you could. How are you ever going to recover from that?

guys... what if the games look the way they look because of In-ho...? what if the players back then had much less equal footing, and it was wild west from the moment they stepped into the room because back then, the games were rigged and some players got intel or even weapons from the guards? what if In-ho went in as the Front Man because he wanted to make games fair? he probably didn't have the childlike optimism of Gi-hun to think he could end the games (in one way or the other, they have been going on for hundreds of years anyway) but he wanted the players to have equal resources, a fair chance to win. that's why he's so set on having the consent form and no outside help provided for anyone and a possibility to vote?

as a feminist i thought tpol's pon farr episode was poorly written and oversexualized her for the male gaze. however as a homosexual i thought tpol sweaty and moaning and crying on the floor was pretty good

I am thinking about fan fiction writers, but anyone who writes any kind of fiction can answer. (As far as I’m aware, non-fiction is usually written in the past tense - but if I’m wrong do let me know!)
If you like, explain why in the tags!
When I was young I gathered that all serious works of fiction were written in the past tense (past tense third person to be precise) so that is what i did when I started writing. However my mind was blown by the power and immediacy of Margaret Atwood writing in the present tense so I started to experiment with it myself, and now i strongly favour it. I get the impression that past is still the most commonly used, but I’m prepared to be surprised!
Please share!
#i'd love to be able to write fics in past tense but English wins with me everytime#maybe because my style is convoluted enough for the present tense#i also don't really get a and the#somebody teach me English please
