Hidan wasn’t surprised by the technique, had been expecting it in fact, and he simply stared and smirked at the younger. The immortal made no move to get out of the way, instead allowing the jutsu to capture him. It wouldn’t have been hard to avoid it, and he probably could have worn the shinobi out by doing so, but allowing himself to get caught would hopefully catch Shikamaru off guard. Once the jutsu finished Hidan was sure to make things more interesting between them.

As he felt the control of his muscles slip he shot one last smirk at the younger shinobi and decided to wait for the jutsu to end.

   “I can’t do anything while you have control…unless you force me to.”

He replied with a condescending tone, an almost sneer marring his expression.

   “So…what are you going to do now that we have what…five minutes to talk? Surely you’re not going to just stand there silently until you can’t hold the jutsu any longer.”

    He was right and Shikamaru absolutely hated it.  Now that he’d trapped Hidan with the shadows, there was nothing left to do but wait for the inevitable. The young shinobi kicks himself internally for not completely thinking this plan through; he hadn’t even realised what hand signs were being made—all he’d known was that he did not want Hidan to come any closer. He had reacted purely out of instinct. 

    Now he’d messed up.  He had messed up big time. The moment the jutsu wore off...

    Oh well. There was nothing he could do now.

    “....”

    Hidan was right again, though. Having momentarily halted the zealots advances, he would simply stand there and do absolutely nothing. He wasn’t going to try and strategically work himself away from the danger, no, Shikamaru was perfectly content to stand there—before the enemy—and do nothing for the next five or so minutes.

    Why? Because he didn’t particularly care anymore. Not really.

It’s pleasing to know someone else is reading them and enjoying my portrayal. Also, yeah, I get that a lot. Shikamaru is one of my oldest muses (right up there with Sasori and Orihara Izaya from Durarara!!) and, I guess, since I’ve been writing him for so long it’s easy to shift into his personality? 👠 - What was my muse’s last serious relationship like?

Hoo-boy. The last time I wrote anything shippy was MOONS ago. But it was with a former-friends Sakura (oddly enough). It was probably one of my favourite ships that I’d written with this person. At first it didn’t really sit well with me, given that the canon pairings had just been revealed and whatnot, but over time it grew on me. I still ship it to this day. Now, as for the ship itself; it was a pleasing mixture of angst, feels, and NSFW. And also tons of fluff. We’ve all had that one pairing we absolutely adore writing, and it’s only made that much better if there’s multiple genres thrown into the mix, right? Honestly, I think that was the second-most serious relationship this muse has been in. Suns before this, I wrote a bit of shippy stuff with a fantastic Ino (as well as an Asuma years ago but we don’t talk about that), and it was a pretty serious thing as well; although that’s a story for another time.

Ah, yes, this question. Well, given that I haven’t written this character into very many sexual encounters in moons, I’ll just have to go with the last time I can remember writing smut with him. I do believe, in that thread, he was 18. So, to answer this question headcanon: eighteen.

Shikamaru isn’t really the romantic type. He’s actually pretty awkward when it comes to things pertaining to love and whatnot. However, that doesn’t mean he won’t do small things for his partner to show his love for them. He’ll cook for them, give massages to work out their stress, he’ll buy them things they like and surprise them with it, buy them flowers, etcetera. Small, seemingly insignificant things like that.

Tumblr’s violating your privacy by default again

Hey guys, a quick note. Tumblr just added a ‘feature’ that shows if you’re online or not. The only place I see it is in the messenger, though it might be elsewhere. It’s showing a friend as online even though they just have a tumblr tab open that they haven’t looked at in hours. It also shows how long ago they were active. I don’t know how it interacts with the app.

I have a few problems with this:

I personally don’t like the feeling of being stalked

People could actually stalk you

Person A could get mad at Person B because it said Person B was online but they weren’t (and thus didn’t respond) - or just wasn’t up to talking

Person X could message Person Y and get anxious when person Y doesn’t respond, since it says they’re online

I found the place to turn it off in account settings. There’s a section called “Availability” where you can toggle off the functionality.

    Shogi seemed to become more than just a game, neither nin taking the opportunity to strike the first move but it seemed the game was more of a metaphor; the impending fight. They hadn’t considered or thought through tactics to make the first move…    Knowing Asuma as a train smoker he’d become accustomed to the following cloud of smoke that followed the traditional nicotine stick. Kakashi’s gaze did not move from Shikamaru’s even when the piece was moved, he wasn’t so interested in the game as much as the Akatsuki members who followed.

  The silence seemed to shatter, the copy-nin had previously experienced his own encounter with a paired team of the malicious, hunting cult. Their missing-nin status sometimes outweighed the need of knowledge as many of the rogue’s who joined the cult are well-known but not for the best of reasons; so he could only assume the worst and possibly be relieved when it wasn’t as bad as he expected. But it surprised him that the information on Kakuzu was scarce, also being called the calm reminded the copy-nin of the ‘calm before the storm’. A great Ninja watches and learns before biding their time; meaning Kakuzu was the brains of the operation and also the smarter and presumably stronger of the two.                      “I’ve never heard of a curse-technique that doesn’t relate to sealing..                  Then again the power to believe in something is a strong ability also.”   “But ritualism just means that something more than human is involved so there’s no point in targeting the source of the ‘curse’. Immortality, that’s what was gathered? I think dismemberment is the right way to go about his ability; if you can’t kill him just incapacitate being able to do.. Anything. Although Akatsuki might go looking for missing members as it’s known they replace previous ones with new ones as Orochimaru is an ex-member, I’d suggest somewhere either remote or guarded for Hidan’s parts though…                                                                                 Have anywhere in mind?”       Trying to dodge the conversation of the attacks before Asuma’s death and instead focusing entirely on the two seemed to be better for their battle strategy, although the silvered shinobi felt uneasy as to going blindly into battle with the one named Kakuzu; No shadow of a doubt he’d barely even used an inch of Chakra during that day and the groups abilities seemed ridiculously overpowering. “Sorry to ask when you’ve made it clear, was there anything Kakuzu did that might indicate any of his abilities?                            Even if they weren’t an attack?”

  Understanding the basics of a curse-technique, as well as ritualism, was something he would have thought every shinobi—Chunin and higher—would have known. And he did! It was just having to recollect such memories and information directly connected to his mentor’s murder was causing his normally intelligent and serene mind to scatter and shatter with the horror those two men could induce. Even so, he’s shifting through potential areas they could lure Hidan to in order to take him out. 

  It doesn’t take long for a singular area to burst into his minds eye. Dense forests, guarded by silent, ever-watchful animals... Imperceptibly, those cold hues of his move to look off to the left—staring directly at the dense treeline of his clan’s forest. Yes. That was the perfect spot. They could create a pit—one that could be easily blown open with a multitude of paper-bombs, and later sealed shut with a cave-in caused by another paper-bomb—that could become that psychopathic sadist’s grave. 

  Shikamaru could plainly see it in his head. The trap he would lay above the hidden pit, after subduing Hidan with his Shadow Imitation and forcing him to become separated from his partner, the way the explosion would thoroughly dismember him—turning his body into several dozen pieces....

      Envisioning such a thing sends a thrill through him. He wanted that man to suffer. He wanted him to waste away in that hole for all of eternity. He—

                    “My clan’s forest. I could lure him there and take him out.”

  The young Nara slowly turns his gaze away from the gently swaying treeline, looking across the board at the silver-haired Jonin. Those words were so, so calm, revealing none of the ice-cold, albeit sadistic intent that rose up within him like some dark, noxious cloud. 

  It was exhilarating to feel such things, even if it stemmed from the intense desire to snuff out the man who had taken away his most cherished person in the world.

                    “Oddly enough he looked to be made of some kind of string. Sort of like a rag-doll... And... it might not help, but I think he’s immortal as well. Perhaps not in the way Hidan is but I think it’s in a more unorthodox way. Stealing hearts or something like that. He’s not in the Bingo Book is he? If he is maybe.... Maybe that could give us some inkling to his abilities aside from Immortality.”

“Oh?” Sakura wasn’t all that surprised to hear about the blond’s act of rebellion. Naruto had a terrible habit of rifling himself up just to shoot himself in the foot. She had no doubt that he was steadily working towards becoming Hokage, but he was terrible at studying and staying focused… and she knew it wouldn’t be long before he had to seek out Shikamaru to regain his help.

“Pfft. Nothing changes… So stubborn…” she chuckled, shaking her head. “He’s likely going to end up confusing himself. His poor concentration will slow him down without you around to keep him focused,” she predicted, remembering how Naruto was during their academy days. He had gotten better… but old habits died hard, as they say. And he had always been better at handling things on the battlefield rather than those in the classroom. “He’ll see reason eventually… but in the meantime, I say enjoy the break,“ she joked, smirking slightly. "You deserve it."

Pausing at his next question, Sakura frowned in surprise. She had been doing her best to appear normal, but she supposed if anyone could see through that it was Shikamaru. Or maybe she hadn’t been hiding it as well as she’d thought. Crossing her arms she sighed, the corner of her lips curling up slightly as her gaze fell to the ground. "I’ve been banned from the hospital and clinic for the day,” she explained with a hum. “They’ve all turned against me.” She felt a bit like a captain who had been forced out of her own ship.

Of course, Sakura knew that everyone was just trying to help… but with nothing left to do, all Sakura could do was think. And… if she were really honest with herself, a good portion of why she had kept herself so busy was because she hadn’t wanted to give her mind time to do just that.—because then her mind always wandered back to Sasuke. Where was he? Was he safe? She didn’t even know where she stood with him, but these questions couldn’t help but swirl around in her head.

Which was why she needed to stay busy. Not that it was the only reason, though, of course. A lot of work was being put into the clinic and with this absence, she’d have to play a bit of catch up tomorrow to stay on top of schedule. (Granted it was a schedule she set for herself, but still).

Looking back up at Shikamaru, her smile widened just a bit. “So, have anything planned for your freedom today?”

    Somehow Shikamaru finds he isn’t surprised temporary banishment from the Clinic was Sakura’s reason for looking so downtrodden. The woman was turning into a workaholic. He has no clue how she manages to stay on her feet as long as she does—of course, it makes sense. As far as he knew she wasn’t struggling under the weight of becoming the next leader of her Clan—assuming the Haruno’s were even a clan like the Nara’s, Yamanaka’s, or Akamichi. He doubts it. 

    Dealing with Naruto, trying to figure out what he wanted to have with Temari (if anything at all), handling the anxiety that came with inheriting an entire clan of shinobi, and acting as a surrogate father figure for Mirai was causing Shikamaru to grow up much quicker than he would have personally liked. 

    He’s surprised the amounting stress hasn’t created an ulcer or two. 

    Being around friends—even just one—certainly made these things looming over him easier to handle. Just being around Sakura’s serene, albeit bubbly personality was already lifting his spirits from the dreary dread they had been in for the last few months or so. Even so, some of the light seems to fade from those intelligent obsidian hues. At home it was just himself and his mother, who had, since his father’s passing, had become much more reclusive and withdrawn. Sometimes it worried him. All he did was worry beneath the mask of harsh tones and dripping sarcasm. 

        “Me?”

    Her question startled him. It’s been a while since anyone had asked him about any plans he might, or might not, have had. 

        “Well... Today is Mirai’s eleventh birthday and I was going to attend it... Give her her father’s chakra blades,” there’s a considering pause wherein Shikamaru cocks his head at the medic-shinobi at his side. A wan smile spreads into existence. 

        “Do you want to come with me?”

      extending her hand towards the board, she began to pick the shogi pieces & rearrange them into the correct order —– or as well as she could remember it, anyway. this game proved to be quite an interesting one, in the end ( even if she lost this match ). in any case, she had to admit she was a little skeptical at first but—– now she was even considering to start practicing.

       “i swear—– sometimes i’m convinced that there is an old man’s soul stuck on you, shikamaru.” a slight shake of the head & playfulness tugged at the corner of her lips. it was her first time hearing that story & sakura was actually very glad he spontaneously decided to share this with her. it was an important memory, after all, wasn’t it? she knew how much his team treasured their sensei & couldn’t even begin to wonder how painful it must be for them to deal with his absence. a daily struggle. even now, after so long.

       but this wasn’t a topic she wished to dwell further on. no need to open wounds of the past.

       “& i’m glad to know you’re aware of that.” she slipped the confidence mask back on &worked hard to suppress the urge to giggle at his words. but despite her wishes, she couldn’t stop the faint pink colouring dusting her cheeks. no matter how confident she always tried to pose as, praises like that never failed to make her feel somewhat shy. being acknowledged for her abilities ( especially coming from someone as strong & skilled as him ) always made her feel proud & happy about herself.

       “so—– do you want to play another round or do you rather go for some tea instead?”

      It wasn’t the first time someone had told him they thought the spirit of an old man resided within his youthful self. Each time he heard such things spill from someone else’s mouth, he couldn’t help but smile. For as long as Shikamaru could remember he had liked to take things slow and paced in a relatively unhurried manner. There was no reason to rush into life, after all. 

      Rushing through life only created unnecessary stress and problems.

      For a moment, he sits there, completely and utterly still, silently relishing in the faint breeze as it drifted through the shaded porch area he’d lead Sakura to upon hearing she would play a game or two with him. It was spring—– nearing summer—– and he had plans to spend the vast majority of that time basking in the sunlight. 

      “Heh.”

      The sound of amusement is made as Sakura’s boasting fills the space between the two skilled shinobi. He hadn’t really thought of the woman across the board would be so... easy to fluster. Part of him wanted to admit it was something to be enjoyed—– flustering someone he’d known for the better part of his life. Obsidian hues focus in on her then, noting the light dusting of pink across fair cheeks. How cute...

      “Tea sounds fine to me, honestly. We can come back to this later if you have the time to stick around.”
