Gabriel's "Omnic Rights" Speech

I literally cannot stress how important it is that Gabriel is the one sympathizing or being understanding towards Omnics, a “minority” that he himself DIRECTLY fought against and defeated in wartime. This is REALLY BIG for his character and shows a depth that I think many fans knew he had/was capable of but had little to no canon to stand on. Now that he has this, it’s great proof that him and his later persona of Reaper are not “mindless hate monsters/machines” but individuals fully capable of agency, emotional reasoning, critical insight, and empathy. The fact that Gabriel is aware and implied to be supportive of a group - however extreme - that is fighting to claim their rights and stand their group is an indication that Blizzard is moving his character in a good direction.

I feel pretty firm in saying that “Reaper” is likely Chaotic Good-Neutral with hard views on himself, Overwatch/Blackwatch, “the conspiracy,” and the ability to believe that sometimes “the ends do justify the means.” This makes fan theories that Infiltration Reaper is “in on the plan” much more likely, and provides set up for a possible redemption arc Soon™ (Blizzard Soon).

( this is a really good explanation! i completely agree with what you’ve said here, especially the point about villains generally having a warped sense of good. everyone’s the hero of their own story, as the saying goes.

to me, the most INTERESTING part of exploring characters of questionable morals is how they justify their actions and behaviors to themselves. i like digging into their heads and coming to understand their perspective, even if it’s deeply flawed. real neat stuff. )

Yes! That psychological stuff, its fascinating. Seeing an angle outside of what you are told by the ‘hero’ is always interesting because its another perspective, and to be able to sympathize with a character so demonized in a story. Ugh I am weak to it! I’ve had characters where I would rather the villain succeed than the hero. There are so many deep villains, and that saying right there, the ‘everyone’s the hero of their own story’ is what fuels that.

It helps that, for the most part, humanity has strong morals. We want to do good, we want people to be safe and we don’t like when bad things happen at the hands of another person or even nature. We want to help. So being faced with a character that feels so similar but is willing to do anything to do something they believe in is just. Wow, its something new. When a writer goes in depth about a villain, I am an immediate fan, bro. ]]
