how to earn more a's: tips from an honors student
abs-studies:
Grades certainly aren’t the most important thing in the world. However, if you want to improve yours and don’t know how, here are some tips that have worked for me!
Be ready to conquer.
The class might seem impossible at first glance.
Don’t let that defeat you!
Go in with the attitude that says “I am going to do well in this class.”
Having some confidence will be a lot more effective grade-wise than going through each week thinking “I don’t care what happens. I just need a C to pass.”
Don’t take no for an answer. Personally, I go into class thinking “I am going to get an A in this class and that’s that.”
Spoiler: it usually works pretty well
In class:
Go to class.
I can’t stress this enough.
Unless you have a good excuse not to, GO. It is so much easier to work on material at home if you’ve heard it in class.
Take notes during lectures and participate in discussions!
You could ask someone to share their notes with you (and please do this if you have to miss a day!), but the act of writing concepts down and actively listening throughout the class will help when it comes to studying for tests later.
Do ALL the assignments.
That 5 point outline you have to fill out? Do it. The concept-quiz to be done online before your next class? Do it.
These points will add up. Even if it seems like busy work… do it.
If nothing else, it will add a few points to your grade, which if you want to think about it this way, will make up for an error on a test.
Build good relationships with your instructor. Don’t be afraid to ask them questions, or share your concerns about your grade, if you have any!
This will really let them know that you’re trying and that you care about learning and how you do.
Recently I spoke with my bio professor about how I felt behind in my class. She gave me some words of encouragement, and now I’m getting the highest grade in the class.
Studying:
Learn from your mistakes. If a study tactic doesn’t work or a test goes wrong, try to think about what you could have done to make the next one go better.
Finding study skills that work for you is a process of trial and error, so don’t be afraid to change what you’re doing and try something else.
Maybe making flashcards or mind maps or outlines won’t work for you, and that’s okay!
Set study goals!

Remember that improving your grades will take hard work. High GPA’s are earned, not given out, and it may take some time to find out what works for you. I believe in you! If you have any questions, feel free to send it my way.
