Day 2 and i’m soooooo hungry. Hungry before, during, and after dinner. Couldn't fit salad dressing in the budget so I went with hot sauce instead. #SNAPChallenge #StLMetroMarket #hunger #4DollarsAday #FoodDesert #StL #HotSauceSalad

I’m not a big math guy, but this seems impossible for those living on average Missouri SNAP benefits --$4 a day--. #SNAPChallenge #StLMetroMarket #4DollarsaDay #StL #FoodDesert

Today is the first day of my #snapchallenge. For the next 30 days, I can only bike/walk/or take the bus to the grocery store, I can’t spend more than $120 on groceries for the month ( or $4/day), and I can only purchase healthy food so, no microwaveable burritos. There’s also a long list of things I can’t buy: alcohol (I don’t drink), cigarettes (I don’t smoke), fast food/takeout (😡), and no prepared foods from the grocery store. I will be pricing out every meal and using the #stlmetromarket social media accounts for my food diary.
I can only eat what I buy and cook during challenge so, no office parties, no vending machines, no @starbucks, and no using food (or even condiments) I already had. The good thing is that food and money can rollover from week to week. I live 4 blocks from a grocery store so, walking is no problem. This budget is going to take some getting used to, though. $30 didn’t go very far here, so I think maybe, I’ll try a different store next week. To learn more about food access issues and how you can support my work to bring healthy, affordable food to St. Louis area food deserts, go to stlmetromarket.com, follow us on Twitter @stlmetromarket, and take the #snapchallenge for yourself. Use the #4dollarsaday and @ us your 7 day food diary and you’ll receive a badge.
